of Suicide by poisoning.
(Eleanor Dumont; A petite French Lady, famous and respected by the
Miners of Bodie, Virginia City and various other Mining Camps. A
gambler by profession, she lost her stake in Bodie and committed
suicide.
From the Bodie Standard News, Oct. 9, 1880, a report of the incident
was carried. "Last Monday, the dead body of a woman was found
about 2 miles south of Bodie on the road leading to Bridgeport.
The body was identified as that of Madam Dumont, familiarly known
as "Madam Mustache" in almost every mining camp from Utah and
Idaho to California. She was a French woman, very quiet and
inoffensive, but with a very strong propensity for gambling. Her
favorite game was "21" which she has dealt for many years. With

Her body was dug up by Dr. Blackwood for the purpose of dissecting
the body -- her skull came into the possession of Dr, Jones.
When Dr. Blackwood finished his work, he had 2 men dump a box
containing the remains, into the Ajax mine shaft. However, a miner
at the Bodie mine saw the incident and he and several others
investigated, and made the gruesome discovery.
At the hearing Dr. Blackwood testified he knew nothing about the
reamins; he "jumped" town and was never overtaken.
