April 6, 1949 - July 29, 1999 Wendy Sue Hauss of Annapolis, Md., died Thursday, July 29, 1999, of advanced breast cancer. She was 50. Wendy Sue Hauss was born April 6, 1949, in Oak Park, Ill., to Harry John Johnston and Anne Marie Glasgow Johnston. She married Karl Hauss in 1970 in Boulder. She lived in Boulder and Hygiene, and moved to Annapolis in 1989. Mrs. Hauss enjoyed her daughter's Georgetown Lacrosse Team. Survivors include her husband of Annapolis; two daughters Vanessa and Margaux Hauss, both of Annapolis; her mother of Arlington Heights; one brother, Ken Johnston of Oklahoma City, Okla., and one sister, Laurie Johnston-Aronson of Boulder. She was preceded in death by her father. A memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Leonard's Crane Hollow Farm, west of Hygiene. Angela Michelle "Mikki" Locascio of Boulder died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, in Vail from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. She was 15. She was born Feb. 14, 1984, in Bellevue, Wash., to Michael Locascio and Cynthia Chatto Locascio. She was a student at Fairview High School. She had lived in Boulder for eight years, moving from Redmond, Wash. Survivors include her father of Redmond; her mother of Boulder; her step-mother, Kelli Locascio of Redmond and three brothers, Matthew, Tony and Daniel Locascio, all of Redmond. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crist Mortuary Chapel, 34th Street and Diagonal Highway in Boulder, with the Rev. David Frees of the Boulder First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Jessie Lucille "Jackie" Ribble of Boulder died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, in Boulder Manor Care. She was 82. She was born Aug. 24, 1916, in Lyons to Lawrence Peterson and Anna Andrews Peterson. She married Keith Ribble on May 18, 1935, in Boulder. He died in 1973. Mrs. Ribble was a waitress at Ma's and Pa's Cafe and at Foothills Restaurant in Lyons for several years. She worked for Ball Brothers as an electronic assembler from 1961 until she retired in 1979. She moved to Denver briefly, then moved back to Lyons in 1950. She moved to Boulder in 1996. She enjoyed her family and attending her grandchildren's sporting and school activities. Survivors include two sons, Robert Ribble and Jerry Ribble, both of Lyons; one daughter, Arden Kayne of Longmont; one sister, Wilma Vaughn of Longmont; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Memorial services were held. Interment was in the Lyons cemetery icon. Edna Jean Spurgeon of Boulder died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at home. She was 73. She was born July 10, 1926, in Ione, Wash., to Maude Perry Hayes and Charles Hayes. She married Stanley Spurgeon on Sept. 18, 1945, in Kalispell, Mont. He died in 1988. She operated a hair salon in the former Boulder Memorial Hospital, worked in an adult day-care center and was an admissions clerk and switchboard operator at Boulder Community Hospital, retiring in 1991. She volunteered at Boulder Community Hospital and the Boulder police annex on the Downtown Mall. Mrs. Spurgeon moved to Boulder from Estes Park in 1967. Survivors include a brother, Robert Hayes of LaClede, Idaho; a sister, Shirley Spurgeon of Beaverton, Ore.; a stepsister, Marquetta Ladwig of Clarkston, Wash.; and her three adopted sons, Butch Howard of Longmont, Wayne Van Slyke of Estes Park and Larry Van Slyke of Moab, Utah. She was preceded in death by two sons, David Spurgeon and Donny Spurgeon. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today at Mountain View Memorial Park, 3016 Kalmia Ave., Boulder. Winifred Lucas Heard of Boulder died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Boulder Manor Health Care Center. She was 88. She was born Jan. 4, 1911, in Malvern, Ark., to Ida Hess Lucas. Her parents were divorced. Mrs. Heard was a secretary, retired from the Texas Veterans Affairs Department in Lubbock. She was divorced. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian churches in Malvern and Newport, Ark. She trained as a classical pianist and often performed as a guest pianist or organist in churches in Newport, Morrilton, Ark., and Des Arc, Ark. She played background music in silent movie theaters as a teenager. Later, she was a pianist in a Malvern jazz band. She moved to the Boulder area in 1993. Survivors include two sons, Joe Heard of Boulder and Bill Heard of San Pedro, Calif.; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Chautauqua Community House, 900 Baseline Road, Boulder. Vickie Jensen died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at her Boulder home. She was 56. She was born March 14, 1943, in Salt Lake City, to Merlin Coe and Marjorie Petrelli Coe. She married Bliss Jensen on June 13, 1963, in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Jensen was a homemaker. She moved to Boulder in 1972 from Morristown, N.J. Survivors include her husband of Boulder; two daughters, Jennifer Millican and Jacalyn Jensen, both of Littleton; a brother, Bob Coe of Salt Lake City; and a granddaughter. Lena Rivers Parker of Boulder died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Frazier Meadows Care Center in Boulder. She was 85. She was born Aug. 24, 1913, in Ellaville, Ga., to Ernest Fowler and Thulia Layfield Fowler. She married Rufus Parker on Dec. 21, 1936. He died in 1974. Mrs. Parker moved from Columbus, Ga., to Colorado in 1995. She graduated from Montezuma High School in Montezuma, Ga. She worked as a sales clerk for Sears for 21 years before retiring in 1975. Mrs. Parker was a member of the Oates Avenue Baptist Church in Columbus for more than 50 years, teaching Sunday school, working with the food bank and serving as the treasurer for a number of years. She was a member of the Sears Retiree Association. Survivors include three daughters, Joy Weldon of Cheyenne, Wyo., Judith Sorg of Broomfield and Diane Freitag of Parkland, Wash.; a brother, George Fowler of Montezuma; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eian Fowler and Ernest Fowler; and a sister, Jenny Price. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Howe Mortuary in Longmont. James E. Conlin

James E. Conlin of Gold Hill died of a heart attack Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, in Sweetwater, Colo. He was 63. He was born March 24, 1936, in Detroit to Earl Conlin and Annette Fansler Conlin. He married Sharon Moreland on April 3, 1959, in Farmington, Mich. Mr. Conlin first came to Boulder in 1955. In 1959, after he had completed degrees at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University Business School, he moved back to Boulder. He served in the Army from 1961 to 1963. He worked for the University of Colorado Housing Office and also managed the CU summer conference series. He left CU in 1973, traveled around the world and lived in New Zealand. Upon his return to Boulder in 1977, he renovated houses and opened the Lickskillet Cafe in Gold Hill. He closed the cafe and made it into a private residence. He was an avid car fan, mountain bike rider and world traveler. He founded and organized the annual Gold Hill Tour de Rump bike and treasure hunt race. Survivors include his wife of Gold Hill; two sons, Dr. Steve Conlin of Sweetwater and David Conlin of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Mackenzie Conlin of Newport, R.I.; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Horsfal, one-half mile up Sunshine Canyon Road east of Gold Hill. Leo W. Cabell

Leo W. Cabell of Boulder died in an accident Aug. 8, 1999, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was 74. He was born March 27, 1925, in Hampton, Va., to Leo Cabell Sr. and Edith Eken Cabell. He served on the faculty of the University Libraries at the University of Colorado from September 1966 to September 1990, retiring as associate director of libraries and assistant professor emeritus. He also served on the library staff at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., before coming to Boulder in 1966. Mr. Cabell graduated from Princeton University in 1947, returning to Rutgers University to earn a master's degree in library science in 1963. During World War II, he was a paratrooper with the 17th Airborne Division, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded and lost a leg. He enjoyed skiing, hiking and scuba diving. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling. Survivors include a cousin, Edith Doran of Medford, N.J. No services are planned. Cremation has occurred. James Matzen

James Matzen of Louisville died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, in Louisville. He was 87. He was born Nov. 28, 1911, in Naples, Italy, to Luigi Matzen and Maria Rosa Vaia Matzen. He married Cele Madoff in September 1966 in New York City. Mr. Matzen was a security guard at the Rockefeller Center in New York City. He was also a barber in New York City. He moved to Boulder County on July 23, 1999. He was a shipbuilder and in the Army Reserves during WWII. He was a violinist. Survivors include his wife of Louisville; and two sons, Edward Matzen of Dallas and John Matzen of New York City. Private services were held. Avalon Funeral Home of Boulder handled arrangements.

Logan John Campana of Butte, Mont., and formerly of Lafayette died Friday Aug. 13, 1999, in Butte. He was 23. He was born Dec. 8, 1975, in Butte, to Harry Campana and Kate Stone Campana. Mr. Campana had worked at Fresh Produce in Boulder. He lived in Lafayette from 1996 to April 1999. He graduated from Butte High School in 1994. He competed on the Mission Viejo Nadadores Swim Team in California from 1989 to 1990. In 1992, he coached children's swimming in Japan. He enjoyed traveling. Survivors include his parents of Lafayette; a sister, Saskya Campana of Lafayette; and his grandparents, Bernard and Vera Stone of Broomfield. Audrey Mae Paul of Lafayette died of natural causes Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, in Louisville. She was 78. She was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Donald Thomas and Mary A. Johnson Thomas. She married Robert Paul on Nov. 3, 1943, in Buffalo. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Paul was a postal worker, a secretary to the Boulder County Commissioners from 1965 to 1968 and worked in the Boulder County Clerk's office from 1968 to 1971. She moved to Boulder County in 1964. A 1938 graduate from Lafayette High School in Buffalo, she graduated from Taphagen School of Fashion in New York in 1941. She received a bachelor's degree in fine art and sociology from the University of Colorado 1974. Mrs. Paul enjoyed doing calligraphy. She volunteered at St. Louis Catholic Church, the Caring Pregnancy Center and Avista Hospital from 1995 to 1998. She received an award for 1000 hours of volunteer work. Survivors include a daughter, Claudia Beauprez of Lafayette; three sons, Greg Paul of Basalt, Jeffrey Paul of Belleville, Ill., and Clifford Paul of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Barbara J. Johnson of Broomfield died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Centura Health-Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville of pancreatic cancer. She was 71. She was born Sept. 4, 1927, in Laramie, Wyo., to Alexander Dobby and Winifred Knadler Dobby. She married N. Gordon Johnson in 1949, in Denver. He died in January 1998. She attended North High School and Barnes Business School in Denver. She worked at Montgomery Wards in the late 1940s and was a homemaker after her marriage. Mrs. Johnson frequently served as an election judge in Jefferson County, was a volunteer librarian at Juchem Elementary in the 1960s and was a volunteer for several charitable organizations including the Broomfield Lionettes and the American Cancer Society. Later, she was the primary care giver for her daughter, Joy Gay, who has multiple sclerosis. She enjoyed traveling. Survivors include two daughters, Joy Gay of Broomfield, and Jere Mock of Lafayette; and two sisters, Waneta Vine of Morrison and Georgina Spencer of Laramie. She married Ira Boyle on July 4, 1931, in Franklin, Ind. Mrs. Boyle was a clerk for the Interstate Commerce Commission. She was a member of the Montgomery Hills Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. She moved to Boulder in April 1990 from Fort Myers, Fla. Survivors include her husband of Boulder; a son, Don Boyle of Boulder; a brother, Boyce McDaniel of Ithaca, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. No services are planned. Raymond F. Manes of Boulder died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at the Hospice of Boulder County Care Center in Louisville. He was 82. He was born Nov. 8, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Angelo Manes and Frances Bruno Manes. He married Edna Marie Holland on June 13, 1942, in Long Island, N.Y. Mr. Manes was part owner of a doll factory. He moved to Boulder in 1958, and worked as a clerk at the Boulder post office from 1958 to 1982. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1942 to November 1945, and was a sergeant in Normandy, France. He was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Boulder. Survivors include his wife of Boulder; a daughter, Marie Schulzinger of Boulder; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Francine Manes, and two brothers, Gennaro Manes and Vincent Manes. She was born June 30, 1928, in Neunkirchen, Germany, to Fritz Lichtenstein and Irma Schloss Lichtenstein. She married Robert Haines in 1961, in Chicago. Mrs. Haines was a homemaker. She moved to Boulder from Illinois in 1961. Survivors include her husband of Boulder; two sons, Barry Haines of Dover, N.J., and Bruce Haines of San Jose, Calif.; and three grandsons. Vern V. Offerle of Boulder died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, of cancer in Boulder. He was 80. He was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Meeker to Lawrence Offerle and Bertha Rainey Offerle. He married Hermime Stadtman on Sept. 12, 1936, in Glenwood Springs. Mr. Offerle was an electrical contractor. He was a World War II veteran. He enjoyed music, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of Boulder; four sons, Jack Offerle of Wyoming, Herb Offerle of Aurora, Ron Offerle of Glenwood Springs and Ted Offerle of Coal Creek; a daughter, Linda Gelger of Moscow, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Anne C. Szczurek of Boulder and Cicero, Ill., died Aug. 20, 1999, of a stroke at Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, Ill. She was 72. She was born Feb. 5, 1927, in Chicago to Anthony Potaniec and Antonette Janeczak Potaniec. She married Eugene "Happy" Szczurek on Jan. 24, 1948, in Chicago. Mrs. Szczurek was a homemaker. She belonged to Blue Army, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Casimar's Catholic War Veterans women's auxiliary, Polish National Alliance, St. Mary of Czestochowa Mother's Club and St. Mary Rosary Confraternity. She was active in Golden West Retirement Community, Boulder civic activities, cooking, reading, shopping and volunteering with Colorado Business and Professional Women Foundation. She graduated from St. Ann's High School in Chicago and was president of the senior class. She had lived in Boulder part time since 1989. Survivors include her husband of Cicero; three daughters, Theresa Szczurek of Boulder, Janice Stachyra of Hillside, Ill., and Joyce Szczurek of Cicero; a son, Thomas Szczurek of Cleveland; a sister, Rose Koziol of Necedah, Wis.; and eight grandchildren. Ruthanna McCoy Evans of Duarte, Calif., formerly of Boulder, died on Aug. 20, 1999, in Duarte. She was 90. She was born June 27, 1909, in Denver, to Frederick Eames and Florence Watson Eames. She married Abram A. McCoy in 1932 in Boulder. He died in 1961. She married the Rev. Ralph D. Evans in 1964 in Boulder. He died in 1996. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mortar Board for scholastic achievement and of Kappa Kappa Gamma while attending the University of Colorado where she also lettered in basketball. She was active in Boulder's First Presbyterian Church and as Cub Scout leader. She lived in Boulder until the early 1990s. Survivors include a son, Michael A. McCoy of Imperial Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Ann McCoy of New York; two stepsons, David Evans of Sherman Oaks, Calif., and James Evans of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif., and a stepdaughter, Judith Greulich of Lakewood. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Green Mountain Cemetery icon, 20th and Baseline, Boulder. Arrangements are being handled by Darrell Howe Mortuary of Lafayette.

Mary Ruth Chaney of Longmont died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in Longmont United Hospital. She was 95. She was born Aug. 15, 1904, in Winchester, Ill., to Clarence McDonald and Lenora Ewing McDonald. She married Russell W. Chaney on Nov. 16, 1924, on the McDonald farm in Winchester, Ill. He died in 1975. She attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill. Mrs. Chaney moved to Longmont in November 1980 from Florissant, Mo. She was devoted to promoting constitutional government and honesty and moral values in government. She organized and promoted a patriotic organization in Longmont from 1993 to 1995 called The Citizens of the Republic. She was a devoted member of Richmond Heights Presbyterian Church in Missouri, Salem Church of Florissant, Mo., and Christ Congregational Church of Longmont. She is survived by her two daughters, Jean Davis of Longmont and Alice Krugman of Boulder; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Congregational Church, 1240 Francis St. in Longmont. The Rev. Ed Zimmerman of the church will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St. in Longmont. Family will be present to greet friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Interment icon will be in Foothills Gardens of Memory in Longmont. Aaron G. Rothmann
Feb. 11, 1978 - Sept. 1, 1999
Aaron G. Rothmann of Boulder died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Boulder County. He was 21. He was born Feb. 11, 1978, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Terrence Rothmann and Sandra Van Landschoot. He moved to Boulder in May 1998 from Wausau, Wis. He was enrolled in the Ford Asset Management Program through Front Range Community College and employed at Landmark Lincoln/Mercury in Lakewood. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Sandra and Michael Van Landschoot; father and stepmother, Terry and Karla Rothmann of Plover, Wis.; grandparents, Gordon and Joyce Rothmann of Eagle River, Wis.; three stepbrothers, Joseph Van Landschoot of Longmont and Ben and Chris Bouchet of Plover, Wis.; six stepsisters, Sally Brown of Aurora, Jane Woods of Boulder, Katherine Zuetell of Lafayette, Patricia Van Landschoot of Superior, Wis., Ann Van Landschoot of Boulder; and Jessica Bouchette of Plover, Wis. Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Crist Mortuary Chapel, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder. Services also will be held in Wausau, at a later date.

Keith Tam Gibbs
Sept. 27, 1936 - Aug. 30, 1999
Keith Tam Gibbs of Boulder died Aug. 30, 1999, in Boulder. He was 62. He was born Sept. 27, 1936, in Seattle to Tam Gibbs and Betty Kuhns Gibbs. He was divorced. Mr. Gibbs was a self-employed desktop publisher in Boulder. He moved to Boulder in 1969 from California. He graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with a degree in English literature. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He had an interest in Chinese philosophies. He liked East Indian music and played the tabla-drums. Survivors include his former wife, Judith Rhodes of Paradise, Calif.; a son, USAF Capt. Oscar K. Gibbs of Ramstein Air Base, Germany; a daughter, Thoebe Hamilton of Rohnert Park, Calif.; two brothers, Scott Gibbs of Silt, Colo., and Kit Gibbs of Seattle; a sister, Betsy Wootten of Felton, Calif.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Boulder Masonic Lodge, 2205 Broadway, Boulder, with Jean Scott, chaplain of the Hospice of Boulder County, officiating. Margaret Ruth Black
Nov. 30, 1918 - Sept. 8, 1999
Margaret Ruth Black of Boulder died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in Boulder. She was 80. She was born Nov. 30, 1918, in Ardmore, Mo., to Homer Dille and Mary Graves Dille. She married Richard Black on Oct. 1, 1938. They divorced in 1969. Mrs. Black worked for the University of Colorado's food service for 13 years before retiring in 1979. She moved from Missouri to Lafayette in 1938 and to Boulder two years later. She was active in the Boulder Senior Center, was a member of the Boulder Unity Church for 18 years and served as an officer with the Canyon Point Association board for many years. Survivors include two sons, Tom Black of Denver and Tim Black of Boulder; two daughters, Bonnie Robb of San Diego and Victoria Kelly of Boulder; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Boulder Unity Church, 2855 Folsom St., Boulder. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Special Transit, 4880 Pearl St., Boulder 80301. Howe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Lee J. Hendry
Jan. 12, 1914 - Sept. 7, 1999
Lee J. Hendry of Boulder died of cancer on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at Good Samaritan Health Center in Boulder. She was 85. She was born Jan. 12, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Richard Liberty and Nettie Cohen Liberty. She married John S. Hendry on Oct. 2, 1937. He died in 1954. Mrs. Hendry was a homemaker, writer, poet, personal manager and office manager. In later life, she acted in dinner theaters, soap operas and TV commercials. She volunteered at the Boulder Public Library for three years, and she started the Scrabble club at the Boulder Senior Center. She lived in Boulder since 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Kanach of Boulder; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne Hendry; and a son, John Hendry. Services will be held in Plainfield, N.J., in October. Contributions may be made to the Paralyzed Vets, 1101 Syracuse, Denver 80220. Avalon Funeral Home of Lafayette is in charge of arrangements.

ELAINE I. MYERS
Dec. 10, 1936 - Sept. 10, 1999
Elaine I. Myers of Longmont died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Longmont United Hospital. She was 62. She was born Dec. 10, 1936, in Thief River Falls, Minn., to John Berquist and Blanch Favrow Berquist. She married John Heger in 1955 in Casselton, N.D. He died. She married Austin Myers in 1977. He died in 1997. Mrs. Myers worked for Avon in sales and later joined Mr. Myers as a long-haul truck driver. The past few years she worked for Kmart stores in Broomfield and Longmont. She moved to Broomfield in 1986 from Sterling, Ill., and to Longmont in 1990. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint and genealogy. Survivors include four sons, David Stallmo of Boulder, Byron Myers of Rock Falls, Ill., Mark Myers of Sterling, Ill. and Allen Myers of Oregon, Ill.; a daughter, Myrna Myers-Moore of Rochelle, Ill.; two brothers, William Berquist of Madill, Okla., and Donald Berquist of Virginia, Minn.; a sister, June Meide of Mountain View, Idaho; a grandson and nine step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Annabelle Olson. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Howe Mortuary Chapel, 439 Coffman St. in Longmont, with Deacon Bill Lee of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be in Green Mountain cemeteryof Boulder. Contributions may be made to the Hope Cancer Center or Meals on Wheels, in care of Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, Colo. 80501.
