Masayoshi Takaoka, 77, judo teacher
WAIMEA, Hawaii - Waimea’s Masayoshi Takaoka, a youth mentor credited with helping to bring back Hawaii’snative koa trees, died at his home Thursday night. He was 77.
“Masa,” as he was known to generations of South Kohala residents, taught judo to hundreds of Big Island youngsters and worked as a cowboy for Parker Ranch and the Shipman Pu‘u ‘O‘o Ranch before he became the nurseryman with a green thumb at the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Forestry Division.
He helped launch the state’s tree nursery in Waimea in 1961, producing more than a million koa and other native tree seedlings.
Takaoka was perhaps best known for wearing his signature papale lauhala, pandanus hats featuring a feather lei, said Patti Cook of Waimea
“He mentored many in judo, golf and forestry,” said Patricia Bergin, a friend and former Big Island superintendent of schools.
Funeral services are pending at the Kamuela Hongwanji Mission.
