Violet Scott, ex-curator, of Academy Arts Center, dies
SCOTT: Well-known as an innovative artistic educator and curator
Violet Adkins Scott, the first curator of the Academy Arts Center with the Honolulu Academy of Arts, died Aug. 4. She was 80.
Scott was born in Deerlodge, Tenn., on Feb. 25, 1920. She received her bachelor of fine arts degree from Indiana University in 1944, and received a master’s in fine arts from State University of Iowa in 1947.
Scott worked as a high school art teacher in Richmond, Ind., and as an art instructor at Hanahau‘oli School. She was an assistant professor of art at Austin State College in Texas and an instructor of art history at the University of Hawai‘i.
She also worked as a designer for Lanakila crafts in 1956, before starting her career as an instructor of Western art, director and curator of education for the Academy Arts Center. She is credited with helping move the academy to its Linekona site.
Scott was well-known as an innovative artistic educator and curator. She expanded the academy’s programs for disabled children. She also helped implement family art programs for parents and their children in the summertime.
Scott retired from the academy in 1992.
She was a member of various organizations, including the Soroptimists International Club of Honolulu, National Association of Women Artists, the National and Hawai‘i Associations for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Pacific Association for Community and Technology, the Hawai‘i Music Association, the Hawai‘i Stitchery and Fibre Arts Guild.
She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Goodwin; five brothers: Turner, Ray, Andrew, Homer and Thomas Adkins; three sisters, Wilma McClain, Verna Mae Medley, Vida Slonaker; two grandchildren, and caregiver Charito Lajola.
The burial will be in September in Indiana. Arrangements by Leeward Funeral Home.
