Bendix C. Halverson
Bendix C. Halverson, 82, of Rock Rapids, formerly of Sioux Rapids, died Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Rock Rapids. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. George Clausen officiating. Also, there was a service at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids with Dean Maiden officiating. Burial was in Lone Tree Cemeteryin Sioux Rapids. Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids was in charge of arrangements.
Bendix Halverson was born at Linn Grove to Bennie and Rena (Hanson) Halverson on April 26, 1921. He attended Highview Consolidated School until his family moved to a farm near Sioux Rapids, where he graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in 1940. After working in a creamery at Lakefield, Minn., he enlisted in the Navy Air Force.
In August 1945, he married Margaret Brown and they farmed in the Sioux Rapids area for a short period of time. The couple moved to Minneapolis where he studied at the Lutheran Bible Institute. They returned to the Sioux Rapids area to farm, and lived on the Hanson family farm until moving to a home in Sioux Rapids in 1981. Margaret passed away in April 1989.
In June 1992, Bendix married Evelyn Dykhouse of Rock Rapids, and for the next 10 years they shared homes in Sioux Rapids and Rock Rapids. They made Rock Rapids their permanent home in 2002.
Family, faith, and community were the priorities in Bendix’s life, and he contributed his talents and energies in many ways. He took part in Sunday school, choir, Luther League, and served on various groups in the churches of which he was a member. He served as a school board member, director on the board of First National Bank in Rembrandt, and was a 50 year member of the Legion Post in Sioux Rapids. The quartet he and several brothers formed entertained at many community and church functions, and he enjoyed leading sing-alongs on the many bus trips he took during his retirement years.
Bendix is survived by wife Evelyn of Rock Rapids; sons Lee (Ginny) Halverson of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Boyd (Norma) Halverson of Laurens; daughters Faith (Gabriel) Blaskovich of Lohrville and Karen (Greg) Moehl of Orlando, Fla; stepson Dana (LaDawn) Dykhouse of Sioux Falls, SD, stepdaughter Dalyce (Michael) Sellers of Belgrade, Mont.; brothers Junior and Norman Halverson of Sioux Rapids; sisters Nellie Sundblad of Sioux Rapids and Helen Andersen of Modesto, Cal.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, and brothers Donald, Honroe, Virgil and Emmett.
Bendix enjoyed a close connection with nature, and was a careful steward of the soil during the years he farmed. He treasured his family and friends and will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Kathryn Deal
Kathryn Kay Deal was born in Lincoln, Neb., on May 22, 1916. She entered God’s kingdom when she passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Atkinson, Neb., on November 11, 2003. She was baptized at the age of three weeks at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atkinson. At the age of seven, her parents moved to a farm near Atkinson, and she received her education in the Atkinson schools. At the age of nineteen, she moved to Iowa, where she remained until 1970. At that time she and her husband, Bob Deal, moved to O’Neill to be near her aging parents, Ralph and Lelia Ries of Atkinson.
Kay was active in the O’Neill community as coordinator of Meals on Wheels for Christ Lutheran Church for many years, and she helped deliver the first meals in O’Neill on April 30, 1973. She also served on the board of the Emergency Family Services and was a member of the Christ Lutheran Ladies’ Aid, the community prayer chain, the Golden Rod Garden Club, and a birthday club. In earlier years, she visited shut-ins and conducted a Bible study group. She lived for her church activities, family and friends and all of God’s animals.
Kay is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Grace Berg of Sartell, Minn.; a daughter, Merridee Matson of Carrollton, Tex.; three grandchildren, Kim Hoghaug, of Sartell, Minn., Ann Marie Babb and husband Eric of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Matthew Matson and wife Laura of Dallas, Tex.; great-grandchildren Paige Hoghaug and Tanner Babb; stepdaughter and husband Dawn and Bill Anderson of Astor, Fla. and their two children, Misty McCain and Billy Anderson and families. She leaves many additional friends and relatives in the area.
Preceding her in death were husband Robert Deal, parents Ralph and Lelia Ries, grandson David Berg, and step-grandson Larry Anderson.
Funeral services were held on November 14, 2003 at Christ Lutheran Church in O’Neill. Burial was in Ida Grove Cemetery.
Shirley Johnson
Shirley A. Johnson passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center at the age of 69. Funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta on Friday, November 28, 2003 with Barker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta.
Shirley A. Huseman was born on September 17, 1934 to Louis and Ella (Oatman) Huseman in the Hanover area of Buena Vista County.
Shirley was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover. She attended St. John Parochial School and graduated from Alta High School in 1952.
Shirley was united in marriage to Carrol L. Johnson on December 13, 1953 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover. She and Carrol joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta later that year, where she was active in the church and a faithful member. They resided on the home farm until April 2003 and moved into the town of Alta.
Shirley found great enjoyment in her church, spending time with her grandchildren, quilting, sewing, flowers and genealogy. She did some of her genealogy research in a month-long visit to Germany in 2001. Shirley had a great love for her family. She and Carrol celebrated their 50 years together with a family gathering in Monticello in June of this year. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons; and three brothers.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Carrol, of Alta; two daughters, Jorja Schofield and her husband Vern on Wintersville, Ohio, and Jodi Sanow and her husband Greg of Owasso, Okla.; two sons, Bruce Johnson and his fiance Kelli Hosch of Monticello and Gary Johnson and his wife Jo of Reinbeck; 15 grandchildren: Melanie and Valerie Schofield of Ohio, Casey, Aubrey, and Kate of Monticello, Jamie Dennis of Cedar Falls, Jennifer, Hannah, and Bailee Johnson of Reinbeck, Nathan Sanow of Florida, Laura, Danielle, and Brianna Sanow of Oklahoma, and Kelle and Eric Bartels of Marion; one great-grandson, Dominick Bartels; one sister, Maurine Hutton of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, Kent Huseman of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother-in-law; several sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Victor A. Durán
Victor A. Durán, age 32, of Storm Lake, died on Friday, April 2, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, after suffering a fall at work.
Funeral mass for Mr. Durán was held Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Father Eriberto Da Costa officiating. Burial was in Storm Lake Cemeteryunder the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.
Dan Offenburger
Dan Offenburger, 68, of Shenandoah died Thursday night, April 8, 2004, in an Omaha hospital. A wake will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. at Hackett Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah, with the funeral Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. He had suffered a heart attack while golfing March 26, 2004 and never regained consciousness.
Offenburger, who was retired, taught and coached at Fonda OLGC and later was athletic director at Creighton University in Omaha before becoming economic development director for Shenandoah.

Margie Peck, age 76, of Alta, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Lowell Hansen
Lowell W. Hansen, age 84, of rural Alta, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids. A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove with Pastor Russ Westbrook and Reverend Doctor Robert Krause officiating. Burial was at Barnes Township Cemeteryin Linn Grove. Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids was in charge of arrangements.
Lowell Wayne Hansen was born the son of Albert and Amy (Van Cleve) Hansen on December 28, 1919, in Alta. He attended school in rural Alta and graduated from Highview High School in 1937. After graduation, Lowell farmed in the rural Alta area.

Sylvia Swanson
Sylvia E. Swanson, age 96, of Albert City, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Pleasant View Home in Albert City. A funeral service was held Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City with Reverend David Bernhardt officiating. Burial was at Fairfield Township Cemetery. Sylvia Elizabeth (Benna) Swanson was born to Axel and Esther Benna on September 9, 1907, at their home near Albert City. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Albert City. She attended country school until it was time for high school which she attended in Albert City, and graduated from there in 1925. After graduation, she worked in Minneapolis as a housemaid for some time, and later she worked as a cook in the Lutheran Children’s Home in Andover, Ill. After that she worked as a waitress and a baker in a café in Albert City.
Grace Jane Friedman
Grace Jane Friedman, 6-day-old daughter of Matt and Cindy Friedman, died Saturday, May 29 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications at birth. Services were held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church by Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Burial was at Mount Calvary Cemeteryin Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her parents; grandparent, Chuck and Mary Kay Friedman of Cedar Rapids and Rex and Darlene Shearer of Storm Lake; great-grandparents, Ann Negro and Emmett Friedman, both of Cedar Rapids, Catherine Hamman of Kingsley and many aunts and uncles.
Tyler Turnquist
Tyler Jonathan Turnquist was born on May 28, 2004 to Jon and Carrie (Sieger) Turnquist in Storm Lake.
Tyler was a precious little boy who was loved by his family and friends. He especially loved getting hugs and kisses from his big sister, Brittany, and his parents. Tyler also had a fond affection for his grandparents and six girl cousins.

Mary McClurg Huegerich, age 65, of Fonda, died Monday, November 29, 2004 at University Hospital in Omaha after a brief fight with cancer.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda, with Father Thomas Hart as celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemeteryat Fonda under the direction of Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda.
Lois Frykberg
Lois H. Frykberg, the daughter of Henry C. and Mabel Nelson Anderson, was bon March 16, 1917 in Albert City. Her childhood years were spent in Albert City, where she received her education, graduating from Albert City High School. Following high school, Lois attended Buena Vista College for one year.
Lois married Mauritz Frykberg on Feb. 9, 1938 in Albert City. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Albert City area until 1940 when they moved to Boulder, Colo. In 1953, Lois and Mauritz purchased a retail variety store in Dows, which they operated until 1975. They resided in Storm Lake from 1979-1991, when they moved to Spencer. Lois was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. She enjoyed handiwork, golfing and bowling. During their retirement years Lois and Mauritz especially enjoyed RV traveling and camping. Lois resided at Riverview Terrace in Spencer for several years before moving to St. Luke Lutheran Home in October 2004.
Katelyn Duff
Katelyn Lindsay Duff was born on Dec. 4, 1990 in Miami Beach, Fla. to Edward Duff and Rhonda Harrington. She moved to Storm Lake soon after her birth. At age two, she moved to Faith, Hope and Charity in Storm Lake.
Katelyn enjoyed spending time with her grandma.

Ronald Challman
Ronald Francis Challman, a former resident of the Storm Lake area, died on September 24, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Ron was born on May 11, 1929 in Sioux City to the late Donald F. and Nelle (Murphy) Challman, who farmed in several locations in the area. After their retirement, they made their home in Storm Lake. Ron attended schools in Ida County and graduated from Schaller High School in 1947 and Creighton University in 1951.

She received her primary education in the Alta schools, graduating from Alta High School. Vira went on to attend Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and West Suburban Oak Park College in Chicago, Ill.

Betty was the daughter of Solomon and Helen (Major) Silverberg and was born on November 30, 1923 in Sioux City. She grew up in Elk Point, S.D. and Storm Lake and graduated from Storm Lake High School. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and a master’s from the University of Nebraska.

Stanley Haahr, founder of MetaBank, Storm Lake land developer, charter Lake Creek Country Club member, Buena Vista University benefactor, and former Alta High School teacher, passed away March 2 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. He was 89.

Helen Starr, age 97, of Storm Lake, died Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Methodist Manor.

Arlene Nordine
Arlene Nordine, age 93, of Albert City, died Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Pleasant View Home.
Arlene Ingeborg Sofia (Forsberg) Nordine was born on September 27, 1911, to Carl and Alphild (Anderson) Forsberg and went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 26, 2005. Arlene lived in or near Albert City all of her life.
Quintus Koth
Quintus John Henry Koth was born July 14, 1928 in Ida County, the son of Carl and Anna (Keilers) Koth. He passed away at his home in Hayward, Calif. on Saturday evening, Februay 19, 2005 at 76. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Quintus grew up on farms in the Alta community and graduated from Alta Consolidated School with the class of 1946. He attended Iowa State College where he joined the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp and was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy at graduation ceremonies in June 1950. Quintus was also awarded a bachelor of science degree in industrial economics.
