Martha Elaine Luoto
REPUBLIC -- Martha Elaine Luoto, age 87, of 121 Hemlock Street, Republic, passed away Monday, December 24, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, Washington, DC; and Claire Luoto, Edina, MN. In addition, she leaves a sister-in-law, Lillian Hecht of Palm Desert, CA, her nieces, nephews and several cousins in Finland.
Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home of Ishpeming, MI, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2001 from 10:00-12:00 noon EST at the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Congregation Church, Negaunee, MI located 2.8 miles S.E. on Co. Rd. 492 from intersection US Hwy 41 and Maas St. (by Crown Motors-Chevrolet), with funeral services to follow at 12:00 noon, Mr. Mike Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Republic Twp. Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dave Johnson, Lee Ann Luoto, Derwin Hendrickson, Butch Schinderle, Jill Luoto and Claire Luoto.
Memorial considerations may be directed to a scholarship fund at the Republic- Michigamme High School.
Albert E. Brown
NEWBERRY -- Albert E. Brown, a lifelong area resident, died on December 25, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.
Visitation will be held at Beaulieu Funeral Home on Friday, December 28, 2001 from 1:00pm until the time of services. Services will be held at the Beaulieu Funeral Home on Friday at 3:00pm with Rev. David Buhman of the Bethel Community Church officiating.
Interment will be at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
Carl H. Rintala
NEGAUNEE -- Carl H. Rintala, 73, 134 E. Case St., Negaunee died with his family at his side at 1:10 PM on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had been a patient for 3 years.
Carl was born Feb. 6, 1928 in Orr, MN to Charles & Lydia (Hooveri) Rintala, moved to Palmer as a child, and was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1946. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. His working career was spent in the grocery business. He was the manager of Paul's IGA Supermarket and also the manager of the Negaunee IGA for the Carpenter Cook Company for 10 years. He then purchased the Negaunee IGA Foodliner in 1970 and owned & operated it for 14 years. A dedicated firefighter, Carl served for 10 years in the Palmer Fire Dept. He served 29 years in the Negaunee Fire Department and was the Fire Chief from 1981 until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Marquette County Firemens Association, having served as president & secretary. He served as a director of the Fire Science Advisory Board at N.M.U.
Mr. Rintala was a member of Immanual Lutheran Church, Negaunee, the Negaunee Elks Club, the Negaunee Eagles Club, the Ishpeming American Legion and 40&8.
Carl was dedicated to his community and was a former member & past president of both the Negaunee Business and Professional Association and the Negaunee Retail Association. He was a former member o the Negaunee Lions Club, the Negaunee Planning Commission and Negaunee Appeal Board. In 1965 he served on the Negaunee Centennial Executive Committee and was the Heritage Day Chairman. He served on the Bell Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for 21 years and had acted as chairman & secretary of that board.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Arlene D. (Strohl), his daughter Carlene (Larry) Carli, Neenah, WI, 2 grandsons; Trevor & Jared Carli, 1 nephew, 2 nieces, several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Walter, and a sister Mayme Claus.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday at the Koskey Funeral Home, Rev. David L. Echelbarger, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Members of the Negaunee Fire Dept. will act as honorary pallbearers.
Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 1-3 PM on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund in Carl's memory.
Carl's family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Heron and staff at the Jacobetti Home for the kindness & compassion shown while caring for Carl the past 3 years.
Edythe Vuk
L'ANSE -- Edythe Vuk, 77, of L'Anse, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at Bayside Village, L'Anse, following a lengthy illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Saturday, December 29, 2001 from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L'Anse. Father Greg Heikkala will be the celebrant. The family will receive friends Friday, December 28, 2001 from 6 until 8pm at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, and 1 hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday. Parish prayers will be offered at 7pm on Friday in the funeral home Chapel. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Francis B. Penberthy
NEGAUNEE -- Francis B. Penberthy, 80, a longtime Negaunee resident, died on Sunday, December 23, 2001 at the Richmond Residential Center where he had resided since 1997.
Mr. Penberthy was born December 8, 1921 in Ely, MN and moved to Negaunee as an infant. He was a lifelong Negaunee resident. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, having served under General Patton in Europe. He worked as a police officer for the City of Negaunee for several years and also worked for CCI at various properties, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Penberthy was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church.
Surviving are 1 son, Gary (Debra) Penberthy and 1 daughter, Marcia Berry, both of Appleton, WI; 2 sisters, Ruth "Elaine" Behrens of Ishpeming and Gloria (John) VanGraber of Burlington, VT; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lenore (Mattson) in 1969.
Honoring his wishes, there will be no services at this time. A graveside service will be held at the Negaunee Cemetery in the spring and will be announced by the Koskey Funeral Home.
Helen C. Cox
ISHPEMING Helen C. Cox, age 76, of 1865 Southwood Dr., was called to be with her Lord on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 29, 2001 at the Good News Assembly of God Church. Friends may call from 11:00am until the time of services on Saturday at the church.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Lillian M. Raish
MARQUETTE -- Lillian M. Raish, 85, of 1055 Lake Street, Marquette, died Thursday morning, December 27, 2001 at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home.
Louis D. Weiland
MARQUETTE -- Louis D. Weiland, 76, of 227 Kawbawgam Road, Marquette, died Tuesday evening, December 25, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Weiland was born on January 3, 1925 in Marquette Township to the late John and Ruth (Zerbel) Weiland. He was a graduate of Northern OH and Richard Walker of Leslie, MI; one sister, Esther (Randolph) Kivisto of Marquette. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, his former wife, Dona LaPorte of Escanaba, as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents was his second wife, Marion Weiland; brothers, Daniel, John, Alvin, Frank and Edwin Weiland; sisters, Alice and Helen Weiland; and one grandson, Zachary Daniel St. Vincent.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11am in St. Louis the King Catholic Church with the Rev. Guy Thoren officiating. Interment will take place in the Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 8pm at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home where a parish prayer service will be conducted at 5pm. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral mass.
Pallbearers will be Bruce St. Vincent, Bill St. Vincent, Ron Towns, John Walter LaPine, James McCrum, Jason LaPine, Nathan St. Vincent and John LaPine, Jr.
Helen C. Cox
ISHPEMING – Helen C. Cox, age 76 of 1865 Southwood Dr. was called to be with her Lord on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming following a brief illness.
Helen was born September 26, 1925 in Ishpeming to the late Carl and Sophie (Jarvi) Larson. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1943 at National Mine High School and received her Nursing Degree from the Cook Co. School of Nursing in Chicago, IL. She married Lloyd Cox on October 4, 1947. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the Bell Memorial Hospital and later at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp., retiring in 1990. Following retirement she enjoyed traveling, visiting the Holy Land, Scandinavia & Jamaica and an Amtrak tour of the South & West United States.
Helen was a member of the Good News Assembly of God Church for 48 years. She was active in the Church Choir, Sunday School activities where she had served as Secretary/ Treasurer, the Missions Board at Good News and as Bible Camp Nurse. Helen was an avid Westwood Patriot Basketball fan.
Survivors include 2 daughters- Susan (Roy) Ruohomaki of Iron Mountain and Sharon Morcom of Ishpeming; 2 sons- Victor (Carol) Cox and Fred (Lynn) Cox both of Ishpeming; 2 sisters- June Tasson and Evelyn Corkin both of Ishpeming; 2 brothers- Kenneth (Betty) Larson of Ishpeming and Raymond (Pena) Larson of Gladwin; 11 grandchildren- Todd (Kerri) Ruohomaki, Lisa (Jason) Brown, Teri (Jon) Koski, Jeff (Tristan) Palomaki, Cherie (Brian Johnson) Morcom, Annette Syrjala, Michelle Morcom, Michael Cox, Christine Cox, Amy (Greg) Fernea, and Kevin Cox; 4 great grandchildren- Jamin, Janelle and Jakob Ruohomaki and Brittany Brown; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons-in-law- Keith Palomaki and Bill Morcom Jr., and a brother-in-law Michael Tasson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 29, 2001 at the Good News Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Bill Chappel to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call from 11:00 AM until the time of services on Saturday at the Church. Pallbearers will be Helen’s grandsons.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the Good News Assembly of God Church.
Funeral arrangement are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Carl Edward Anderson
ISHPEMING -- Carl Edward Anderson, 70, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming. He had been in ill health the last several months.
Born August 9, 1931 in Ishpeming the son of John and Mayme (Maki) Anderson. He attended Republic Schools and served with U.S. Army as a medic during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Erickson Potato Farm, Kroon Forest Products and for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company at the Cliffs Shaft Mine. Mr. Anderson was a member of the American Legion Post #114 and was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed walking in the woods doing amateur prospecting.
He is survived by 2 brothers, Clayton Anderson of Humboldt and Clyde Anderson of National Mine, several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Clarence Anderson.
Funeral services will held 11 AM Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at the Racine Funeral Chapel in Ishpeming with Rev. Michael Carriere to officiate, there will be no visitation. Burial will be in the Humboldt Cemetery.
