Thomas Guilfoyle "Nicked a Bit" at Dead Man's Hill. "Lieut. Thomas S. Guilfoyle, 2257 West Van Buren street, slightly wounded," reads a message on this morning's casualty list. Yesterday a reporter for THE TRIBUNE, on information bent, rang the bell at the home of the wounded officer. "I would like to get some information and a picture of Lieut. Guilfoyle, who was wounded," he told the motherly looking woman who answered his summons. "Oh, just a minute," she answered, and, turning from the door, called, "Tom, some one to see you." And Tom came to the door. It was the wounded lieutenant, home on leave. He got home at the same time the official notification of the injury was received. Modesty prevented him giving either the picture or the information other than that he was attached to the One Hundred and Thirtyfirst infantry and has been "nicked a bit" at Dead Man's hill. "Divinely Protected." "You know, mother, I have been divinely protected, I have learned with St. Paul that his faith did not prevent the serpent fastening itself to his hand, but it did prevent St. Paul's being poisoned." This message, written Oct. 29, arrived at the home of Lieut. Leonard M. Rice, 3001 Washington boulevard, at the same time the message from the government announcing he had been wounded, degree undetermined. Lieut. Rice was a member of the Three Hundred and Fifty-third infantry. He was acting judge advocate of the regiment at the time he went over. Before enlisting he was city attorney of Jefferson City, Mo., and later employed by the Chicago Title and Trust company. He won his commission at Camp Funston, Kas. Death Ends Welcome Plans. Preparations for a joyous family celebration to welcome home Private Ruben Fleshan of the One Hundred and Thirty-first infantry came to an abrupt close yesterday when Chicago relatives received word of his death in action on Nov. 10. He had been gassed and wounded early in July in the first action of the regiment. On Nov. 8 the family received word that he was about to enter the line for the second time. He lived with his sister at 5751 Winthrop avenue. Lieut. Frank E. Frisbie of 5710 Washington boulevard, another member of Col. Joe Sanborn's One Hundred and Thirty-first infantry, is reported severly wounded. He has been a member of the regiment, formerly the First Illinois, for seventeen years, and saw service on the Mexican border in 1916. He was wounded at Dead Man's hill. He lived with his mother. Sergt. Rudolph Domke of Chicago, master signal electrician, died of pneumonia at Ellington field, Houston, Tex. He had been ill for eight days. Before being taken ill Domke passed his examination for first lieutenant and was to have received his commission the last of this month. Wounded Hero Home. Private George E. Anderson of the Three Hundred and Fourteenth engineers was wounded by shrapnel north of Verdun when he was reconstructing a section of the road in that sector. He arrived home on the steamship Mauri yesterday. Previous to being wounded Anderson had been cited for bravery for capturing a German machine gun without firing a shot in the St. Mihiel engagements. He lived with a brother at 5619 Emerald avenue. Private Otto Warner, a member of the Twenty-fifth infantry, died of disease. He was an upholsterer before entering the army, in June, 1918. He lived at 2041 Osgood street. Word has been received that Private Joe Rubino of 740 West Ohio street has been wounded severely in action. He entered the service May 1, 1918. Memorial services will be held in St. Paul's church, Sunday at 2:15 p.m., for Clarence Priebe, a member of the One Hundred and Twenty- second infantry, who was killed in action. Liberty Loan Flyer Killed. Lieut. Alvin W. Splane, assisted in the last Liberty loan compaign in Chicago, by flying around the city and dropping literature. He was killed in an accident near West Point, Miss., yesterday, Lieut. Splane was 20 years old and a son of W. W. Splane, an oil man of Oil City, Pa. He was a graduate of Cornell university. Private Robert H. Stonesifer, a former employe in THE TRIBUNE, was wounded severely in action. He enlisted in the regular army immediately after war was declared, and was assigned to the Fifteenth Field artillery. He is a son of Robert N. Stonesifer of 2701 North Central Park avenue. He was 18 years old when he enlisted. - Reported on December 19, 1918, Chicago Tribune. |
