DOUGHTON Mr. Walter Dickey “Dick” Doughton, age 83, of 2154 Hwy. 21S. Sparta, NC, died Friday morning, January 30, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was born February 26, 1920, in Alleghany County to Marvin and Pocahontas Reeves Doughton. He spent most of his life dairy farming and beef cattle farming. He is survived by his wife, Ella Edwards Doughton of the home; three children and spouses, Richard L. and Jane Doughton of Sparta; Susan and Mack Murphy of Sparta; Joseph E. and Kathy Doughton of Memphis, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Stacey Doughton of Boone, Jason D. Evans of Oxfordshire, England, Patrick Evans of Raleigh and Justin Doughton of Memphis; two nephews, Joe Tilley and Marvin Myers; a niece, Linda Sue Dalton; a brother-in-law, John Myers of Laurel Springs; and a step-grandson, Mackey Murphy. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The Reverend Stephen Ray and the Elder Don Richardson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the Sparta United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 697, Sparta, NC 28675.

BLOODWORTH Mr. Alexander Medford Bloodworth, Jr., age 91, of Sparta, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born April 28, 1912, in Rocky Point, NC, to Alexander and Annie Johnston Bloodworth. He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Duncan Bloodworth of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Alexander Medford Bloodworth, III of Durham, and Edwin and Laura Bloodworth of Sparta; two daughters, Dorothy Bloodworth Gilbert of Durham, and Gretchen Bloodworth Woodward of Woodstock, Georgia; one brother, Jesse Wilson Bloodworth of Rocky Point; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will gather at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

CRESSMAN Mr. Elwood C. Cressman, age 94, of 398 Mt. Zion Church Rd., Sparta, died Monday evening, January 26, 2004, at his home. His wife, Ava Hall Cressman, preceded him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Ruth C. Zitnick of Columbia, South Carolina; a son, Elwood C. Cressman, Jr., of Quakertown, Pennsylvania; a brother, George W. Cressman of Orlando, Florida; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The Piney Creek Masonic Lodge #432 will conduct Masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.

GRIZZELL Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Peggy Grizzell, age 72, passed away January 25, 2004, at her home in Sparta, NC, after a prolonged illness. Peggy is survived by her husband of 39 years, Emmett Grizzell. She is also survived by her son, Steve Grizzell and his wife Lynn Ann of Elkin, NC; daughters, Patricia Bennett and husband Charles of Prescott, AZ, Libby Villari and husband Matt Barnes of Fort Worth, TX, Donna Kubela and husband Brad of Valley Center, CA., and Cheryl Nevarez and her husband Richard of Camarillo, Ca. She is also survived by brothers Charles and Bob Walters; grandchildren Tim Bennett, Lyn Villari, Brandon; Aaron and Amanda Kubela; Jessica Stevens and Jason Bennett; Laureen and Jarrod Grizzell; and Tim and Andy True; and eight great grandchildren. Peggy was born February 19, 1931, in State Road, NC, to the late Bill Walters and Margaret Combs Walters. Peggy moved to California with her children in 1961 where she worked for the Lockheed Aircraft Corp. for fifteen years. She loved California and especially loved their beach home in Mexico, but North Carolina was home. Peggy and Emmett retired to Sparta, NC, in 1990 where they have enjoyed the quiet pace of life. Peggy may be remembered as the author of the Elkin High School song, which she wrote in 1947 while she was a student and cheerleader. The family would like to acknowledge our love and appreciation for her special care givers, Judy Waddell and Rita Moxley, who were a great blessing in Peggy’s life for the past two years. Services will be conducted by Pastor Phil Edwards at the New Covenant Church, Ennice, NC on Hwy. 18 North, Thursday, January 29th at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends beginning at noon at the Church. Interment will follow in the New Covenant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Grizzell family requests that donations be made to New Covenant Church, Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 43, Ennice, NC, 28623. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Grizzell family.

HOWELL Mr. Joe Neal Howell, 92, of 1235 Bledsoe Creek Rd., Sparta, died Saturday morning, January 24, 2004, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Ammie Howell, at 2172 Pine Swamp Rd., in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Caudill Howell. Besides Neal and Ammie, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Ben Bottomley of Sparta; a brother, Willie B. Howell of Sparta; two sisters, Lizzie Fairchild of West Jefferson and Clyde Poole of Rutherford College, NC; and three grandchildren, Cynthia Dixon, Sherill Bottomley and Matthew Howell. Four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 26th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Union Cemetery at Whitehead. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. BRYANT Mrs. Grace Roberts Bryant, age 79, of 1684 Mahogany Rock Road, Sparta, died Sunday morning, January 18, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Namon Monroe Bryant. She is survived by six daughters, Wanda Huff of Hillsville, Deloris Jean Lewis of Sparta, Laura Sarah Wagoner and husband Albert of Ennice, Mary Lyons and husband Charles of Shady Valley, Tennessee, Nancy Bryant Perry of Glade Valley, and Marie Mullis and husband Roger of Sparta; four sons, Denny Worrell of Martinsville, Va., Junior Bryant and wife Bernice of Glade Valley, Bill Bryant of the home, and John Wayne Bryant of Asheville; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a special granddaughter, April Greer and spouse, Paul of Mouth of Wilson, Va; special niece, Shirley Collins of Ennice; and a special nephew, Larry Willard of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, January 21st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m Wednesday afternoon at the Newman Cemetery at Woodlawn, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

SPARKS Mr. Arvel G. Sparks, age 87, of 35 Sparks Wood Lane, Sparta, died Saturday evening, January 17, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Jean Sparks. He was born in Alleghany County, March 14, 1916, to Joe and Francis Crouse Sparks. He was retired from DOT. He is survived by his wife, Pauline LaRue Sparks of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Larry Williams of Lenoir, and Edith and Rev. Jerry Roten of Sparta; a son, Richard Sparks of Sparta; four grandchildren, J.D. Roten, Joyce Lineberry and Michael Farmer, all of Sparta and Eric Benge of Lenoir; and six great-grandchildren, Brandi and Blake Farmer, Felicia and Amber Lineberry and Chase and Mackenzie Benge. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 20th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Zion Cemetery. The Revs. Hobert Dowell, Jerry Roten and Jerry Smith will officiate.The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.The family request, any memorials be made to Pauline, to help on funeral expenses.

KELLY Mr. David Lee Kelly, 63, of 2839 Pine Swamp Rd., Sparta, died Friday morning, January 16, 2004, at his home. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery William Kelly. He was born in Forsyth County, April 10, 1940, to the late Calvin Anderson Kelly and Cora Willard Kelly. He was a retired barber and was of the Baptist faith, and had lived in Alleghany County for the past six years. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Richmond Kelly of the home; two daughters, Penny Kelly Pettitt of West field, NC and Donna Kelly Idol of Kernersville; two sons, Randall Lee Kelly and Michael Kelly, both of Sparta; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Morris of Lewisville and Betty Russell of Winston-Salem. Funeral services w ill be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18 at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreci ated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. CROUSE Mr. Grady William Crouse, age 71, of 617 Hudson Rd., Sparta, NC, died Wednesday evening, January 14, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Shepherd Crouse of the home; a son, Gary Roger Crouse of Sparta; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Ann and Douglas Byrd of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother, Bertha Benge Crouse of Sparta; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Opal Crouse, Elmer and Wilma Crouse, and Harold and Patricia Crouse, all of Sparta; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Eula and Pete Brown of Piney Creek, Stella and Dwayne Love, Opal and Charlie Brinegar and Thelma Nixon, all of Sparta; and his special friend and co-worker, Jerry Wayne Saddler and family. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17 at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Pine Swamp Union Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

PERRY Mr. Hugh Brooks Perry, age 80, of 400 S. Independence Ave., Independence, Va., and formerly of Alleghany County, died Wednesday evening, January 14, 2004, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam L. and Annie Brooks Perry; an infant daughter and son at birth; two brothers, Doughton and Guy Perry; and a daughter-in-law, Norma Perry. He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Beverly Perry of Atlantic Beach, NC, Dennie and Ann Perry of Ennice, Reggie and Cindy Perry of Mt. Airy, and Allen and Kathy Perry of Jacksonville, Florida; one daughter and son-in-law, Lou Ann and Freddie Roberts of State Road; a sister, Lucille Edwards of Sparta; a sister-in-law, Emolene Perry of Sparta; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 17, at New Covenant Church with Burial in the Brooks Family Cemetery off Chestnut Grove Church Road. STOKER Mr. Click D. Stoker, age 83, of 160 Logans Way, Sparta, died Saturday morning, January 10, 2004, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Loraine Matthews Stoker of the home; his daughter, Lucille Stoker of Sparta; two sons, Joe Stoker and wife Brenda of Sparta, and Gray Stoker and friend Delia Moxley of Glade Valley; eight grandchildren, Misty Stoker Jones, April Stoker, Alicia Stoker, Diane Warden, Penny Garvey, Scott Stoker, Eric Blevins and Chrissy Thompson; four great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Junior Higgins of Ennice; a sister-in-law, Doris Stoker of Sparta; and his mother-in-law, Nora Matthews, Havre de Grace, Md. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 12 at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. GAMBILL Mr. Oscar Gambill, Jr., age 88, of 985 Golf Course Rd., Sparta, died Friday morning, January 9, 2004, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. His first wife, Eva Weaver Gambill, and four sisters, Letha G. Osborne, Cora Lee Shores, Gena Sue Hughes and Eula Mae Parker preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Truitt Gambill of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Grady and Carol Gambill of Piney Creek; a grandson and wife, Greg and Paula Gambill of Hickory; a granddaughter and husband, Lynn and Jeff Marcin of Durham; and a great-granddaughter, Allison Suzanne Gambill. LYONS Mr. Ivan Huston Lyons, age 85, of 191 Foggy Mountain Road, Glade Valley, died Monday morning, January 5, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Alfojean Johnson Lyons of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Edna and Hobert Aaron Dowell of Glade Valley; a son, Russell Lyons of the home; two grandchildren, James A. Dowell of Great Falls, Montana and Stephanie Dowell of Raleigh; and a sister, Irene Wright of Glade Valley; a brother, and Orville Lyons of Churchville, Maryland. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 8th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Rich Hill Cemetery. MOUNT Mr. Howard Mount, Jr., age 90, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, NC, died Friday morning, January 2, 2004, at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sparta. His wife, Mary Ruth Guse Mount, preceded him in death. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Dale Mount of Piney Creek; three grandchildren, Twyla Kennedy of Piney Creek, Kimberly Reeves of Sparta, and Kenneth Mount, Jr., of Laurel Springs; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carrie Chamberlin and Gladys Waln of Bassett, Virginia; five sisters-in-law, Molly Podolak, Peggy Latham, Alfreda Kelly and Ruth Guse of Burlington, New Jersey and Lydie Guse of Red Bank, New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. Howard was retired from Agway and served as Dog Warden 45 years for Chesterfield, Bordentown, Mansfield and North Hanover Townships. He was best known as "Mounty". Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 6th at the Page Funeral Home in Burlington, New Jersey, with Burial in the Odd Fellow Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home in Burlington, New Jersey. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Mount Family.

WOOTEN Mrs. Minnie Rhodes Wooten, age 94, of 245 Independence, Rd., Sparta, died Friday morning, January 2, 2004, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She was the widow of Arthur James Wooten. She is survived by two sisters, Hazel Thompson and Stella Thompson, both of Kingsport, Tennessee; a brother, Lonnie Rhodes of Piney Flats, Tennessee; 15 nieces; 15 nephews; and a special friend, Cindy Bush of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 5th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Elk Creek Cemetery near Sparta. The family will gather at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

HUNT Mrs. Viola Marie "Sally" Hunt, age 51, of 2016 Fox Ridge Rd., Sparta, died Thursday morning, January 1, 2004, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Hunt of the home; four sons, Donnie Hunt and wife Gennia, Randy Hunt and wife Renee, and Jason Hunt and wife Hope and Tracy Hunt, all of Sparta; her granddaughter, Kendra Hunt of Sparta; her mother, Bessie Roland of West Jefferson; two sisters, Janet Bright of Asheville, and Ruth Maines of Topeka, Kansas; and four brothers, Jim Dollar of West Jefferson, Henry Dollar of Lansing, and Dale and John Dollar, both of Claremont, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3rd. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
