ELIZABETH E. HERING (nee Koening), of Kearny, died Friday, Sept. 13,
2002. She was 77.
Born in Hoboken, she lived in New York before moving to Kearny in 1986.
She was a homemaker. She died in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny.
She was a member of the Calvary Methodist Church of Kearny and its
Women's Association. She served as the Women's Association secretary.
Predeceased by her husband Irwin, she is survived by a son, Stephen
Hering and his wife, Liz, of Kearny ; two grandsons, Patrick Hering
and Ryden Cohen; and many loving nieces and nephews, grandnieces and
grandnephews.
Memorial services will be held at the Edward T. Reid Home for
Funerals, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m.
Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to the Calvary Methodist Church, Kearny.
MARGARET POLO (Shepherd) (nee Leavy), of Kearny, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002. She was 71. Born in Maspeth, N.Y., she lived in Queens before moving to Kearny 50 years ago. She was a cashier with A&P supermarkets in Kearny and Nutley for many years before retiring seven years ago. She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Anthony's Church. Wife of Charles Polo and the late Charles Shepherd; mother of Charles L. Shepherd, Catherine D. Shepherd and James T. Shepherd and his wife, Joan; stepmother of Charles T. Polo and his wife, Susan; grandmother of Danielle Gartz, Carolyn and Michael Niedzenski and Delia and James Shepherd; step-grandmother of Michele and Samantha Polo; great-grandmother of the late Emma Lynn Gartz; niece of the late Brother Benedict James Ginnane, F.S.C. and cousin of Joan Fealey. GEORGE PLASKOW, of Kearny, died on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002. He was 73. Born in New York City, he lived in Rutherford before moving to Kearny. He was a photographer for Bambergers/Macy's, Newark, before retiring in 1995. Husband of Marion (nee Levy) of Wood-Ridge; father of David (Stephanie) of Montclair ; brother of Sonya (Ross) Valentiane of Long Island. Funeral services were conducted by the Kohler Funeral Home, 280 Hackensack St., Wood-Ridge. Cremation was at East Ridgelawn Crematory. CHARLES ROTHFUSS, of Harrison, died on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002. He was 48. Born in Kearny, he lived in Harrison. He died in University Hospital in Newark. Survived by daughters, Tina Varano and Dana Rothfuss; sisters, Harriot Gillings, Florence Smillie, Ruth Ann Stoia, Alice Wojciechowski; his brothers, William, Raymond and Russell Rothfuss and three grandchildren. STEINIS, of Willow Spring, N.C., died on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002. He was 55. He was the owner of Framer's Market and Gallery in Chapel Hill and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Surviving are his wife, Mary Anne Duffy Steinis; daughter, Samantha Gallacher of Kearny; grandsons, Matthew J. Gilmore and Ryan Patrick Gallacher; father, Julian G. TOOHEY (nee Jennings), of Kearny, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002. She was 77. Born in New York City, she moved to Kearny 35 years ago. She died in the Milford Manor in West Milford. She was a financial clerk for American Can Company in Jersey City for 35 years before retiring 15 years ago. Wife of the late William. Mother of Joseph E., James J. and Peter W. Toohey. Sister of the late Thomas Jennings. She is survived by seven grandchildren and four nieces and nephews on the Jennings side along with their families. Born in Macara Loja, Ecuador, he moved to the U.S., settling in Harrison in 1993 and residing there for eight years. He was employed as a window washer for ABN Co. in New York City for three weeks. He was a member of the Macara Club, Newark. Beloved husband of Elda Soto (nee Giron). Loving father of Jose Fabian Soto. Cherished son of Mario Soto and Elvira Cumbicos. Born in Carteret, she lived in Harrison for the past 50 years. She died at Community Medical Center, Toms River. She was a 1945 graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Trenton. She was a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital and St. Michael's Hospital, Newark and Bell Telephone, Newark, for 10 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Rosary Society and choir member of Holy Cross Church, Harrison. She was also an officer of Parents of Educationally Handicapped Children of Harrison, past treasurer of Mt. Carmel Guild, taught CDD classes at St. Anthony's Church, East Newark and was a founding member of Pathways to Independence, Kearny. Beloved wife of Edward M. He died at West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. He graduated from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1969 with a Bachelor's Degree in history. He worked as a computer programmer with the A.D.P. Company in Roseland for many years. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Grace Council, Harrison, where he was a Fourth Degree Knight. He was also a member of the Color Corps with the Monsignor Doane Assembly, also of Harrison. He was an active member of St. Stephen's R.C. Church, Kearny, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and sang in the church choir. Loving husband of 23 years to Nancy Lee (nee Merritt); beloved father of Robert, Michael and Lindsay Evers; dear brother of Evelyn Rouski and Walter Drevelus; son-in-law of Donald and Mary Jane Merritt. COLUMBIA BIBBO PETROLLE, of Essex Fells, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002. She was 84. Born in Newark, she lived in the Ironbound section for 66 years before moving to Florham Park. She lived in Florham Park before moving to Essex Fells in 1986. She died in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. She was a N.J. licensed funeral director, license #1626, who owned and operated the Bibbo Funeral Home on Ferry Street in Newark for 40 years. The funeral home was founded by her father, Nicholas Bibbo, in 1880. She also owned and operated the Bibbo-Huelsenbeck Funeral Home on South Orange Avenue, Newark, for 15 years before retiring in 1983. She did her undergraduate work at Douglas College in New Brunswick. She was a graduate of Renuuard Training School for Mortuary Science in New York City. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Roseland, the Rosary Society of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Newark and the St. Mary's Guild in Newark. She was also a member of the Essex Union and West Hudson Funeral Directors Association and the N.J. State Funeral Directors Association. She was very active along with her late husband Anthony (founder and proprietor of Wear for Weather in Newark) in various civic and political clubs in the Ironbound section of Newark. Beloved wife of the late Harry Daly; loving sister of Sam Cardea, Grace Lombardo, Mary Caruso and the late Natale Cardea; cherished aunt of eight nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews and three great-great nieces and nephews. Born in Schuylkill Haven, Pa., she lived in Kearny for 50 years before moving to South Whitehall, Pa. eight years ago. She died at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, Pa. She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America, past president of West Hudson Hospital Women's Auxiliary in Kearny and served as a volunteer at the hospital for 42 years. She was a Red Cross volunteer and a member of the Arlington Women's Club, Kearny. For over 20 years, she was a board member and a volunteer nurse at the Inter-County Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Clinic in Kearny. For many years, she was a volunteer at the West Hudson/South Bergen Boys Club in Kearny which was founded by her late husband. Predeceased by her husband, Dr. J. Lawrence Gillespie, she is survived by her daughters, Priscilla E. Nagy and Patricia A. Gillespie. Also surviving is a grandson. ANTOINETTE BELFIORE O'ROURKE, of Harrison, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002. She was 88. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in Harrison most of her life. She died at home. Predeceased by her husband, Elmer in 1996, she is survived by her daughter, Mauren Liles of Alvin, Texas; three sisters, Mildred Minella of East Rutherford, Frances Belfiore also of East Rutherford and Anna Graziano of Belleville; one brother Louis Belfiore of Calif. and a granddaughter. Born in Newark, she lived in East Newark before moving to Kearny 42 years ago. She died at West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. Wife of the late George; mother of Kevin Santos and Denise Munro; sister of Betty Blue, Gracy Coyler and Bob Smith. Also surviving are her grandchildren Denise, Lauren and Kristin Rose. NEIL R. SICILIANO, of Wood-Ridge, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002. He was 65. Born in Kearny, he lived in Wood-Ridge for 38 years. He died at Hackensack University Medical Center. He was the owner of Siciliano Consulting Engineers, Wood-Ridge since 1977, he worked on numerous projects in New Jersey and New York and most recently on a building at Carnegie Hall and at the Museum of American Folk Art, both in New York City. The firm was recognized for excellence in the construction of the latter structure. Prior to forming the consutling company, he was owner and president of Com-Det, Inc., a reinforced concrete specialist in Wood-Ridge. In the 1960s, he worked for U.S. Steel as supervisor and engineering and sales for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He graduated from The Citadel Military College in South Carolina with a degree in civil engineering. An Air Force veteran, he was a first lieutenant with the 839th Civil Engineering Squadron from 1959 to 1962. He was a ember of the N.J. Society of Professional Engineers, the American Concrete Institute and the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institutes. A former zoning board member in Wood-Ridge, he belonged to the Lions Club in Hasbrouck Heights and the Knights of Columbus as an honorary member. Surviving are his wife, Irene; a son, Steven Neil; a daughter, Susan Zottarelli; his father, Salvatore Siciliano; a sister, Marion Steen and three grandchildren. STEVEN, of Wadsworth, OH, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002. She was 89. Born in Kearny, she lived in Toms River before moving to Wadsworth, OH. She died at Golden League Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wadsworth, Ohio. She was retired from the American Hardware Mutual Insurance Co. She was a charter member of Ocean County Evangelical Free Church of Lakehurst. He was 83. Born in Detroit, Mich., he lived in Poland before moving to Kearny 50 years ago. He died at West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He interpreted Russian, German and Polish for New York district courts prior to serving four years in the Army and then served in the Medical Corps. He owned Joe's Liquor and Deli in Kearny for 26 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of Flew Gliders in Poland, American Legion Post 99, founding member and trustee of the Polish Cultural Foundation in Clark, trustee of Kingsland Bank in East Newark and the Senior Men's Club of Kearny. He graduated from the St. Sigmund College in Bialystok, Poland. Husband of Valerie (nee Guladwinski); father of Celeste, Dr. Justine Szkudlarek, John, Joseph, Thomas and the late Zita; brother of Stanley, Kazimierz, Jennie Suleski and Tessie Babinski; grandfather of seven grandchildren, Emily, Kim, Catherine, Julia, Alexis, Kara and Deanna. She was a real estate broker and owner of the Lauron Agency in Belleville for 20 years before retiring in 1985. She was past president of the Board of Realtors of Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Nutley and Belleville. She was also a member of Glen Ridge Country Club. Survived by her son, Ronald D. He was the owner/operator of Muzzi's Lounge, East Newark, for four years, retiring in 1971. Prior to that, he was a bartender in various restaurants and lounges in Harrison and Kearny. He was Private First Class in the Army during World War II, receiving the following citations and medals: three Purple Hearts, wounded in action, with First and Second Oak Leaf Clusters; three Bronze Star Medals for valor and heroism in ground combat with Letter and First and Second Oak Leaf Clusters; the Presidential Unit Emblem; Distinguished Service Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge; Army of Occupation Medal with German clasp and four stars and Belgian Fourragere. One of his Bronze Stars was awarded for heroic achievement Nov. 26, 1944, near Frenzerberg, Germany. The citation stated disregarding intense enemy fire, advanced 200 yards to the flank, killing three snipers and wiping out a machine gun crew. His courageous action enabled his platoon to continue to advance and reflects high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces. He received First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star Medal for exemplary conduct in ground combat against the armed enemy on or about Aug. 9, 1944 in the European Theater of Operations. The Purple Hearts were for receiving wounds while in Gressnich, Kretzhaus and Mossbach, Germany. He was a member of American Legion Post 282, Harrison; V.F.W. Sgt. Born in Newark, he lived in East Newark for most of his life before moving to Bayville 20 years ago. He died in Valley Hospital, Ridgewood. He was a truck driver for Pabst Brewery in Newark where he worked for 35 years before his retirement in 1983.He was a parishioner of Holy Cross R.C. Church in Harrison. He served in the Army during World War II and was a participant as a heavy machine gunner with the Battles of Ardennes and Rhineland. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He talked about his war experiences in technicolor using items he brought back and kept in a box. He would entertain those around him by bringing them out one at a time with vivid recollections and explain their significance in his war experience. At one juncture in his career as a soldier he had an appendix attack on the battlefield in France. The medics moved him across the channel to England where they operated on him. While he was in the hospital, many of his fellow soldiers were killed by a German offensive. Surviving are two sons William J. Murphy and his wife Joann of Wayne and Dennis R. Murphy and his wife Linda of Ocean Gate; two daughters Patricia Gocklin of Kearny and Mary Bonanno and her husband James of Bayville; twelve grandchildren, Scott and Alyson Murphy, Tracey Rizzi, Jill Santana, Linda, Frank and Brian Gocklin, Dennis, Darlene and John Murphy, Maxwell Bonanno; nine great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Alexandra Rizzi, Ryan and Dylan Murphy, Jordyn and Brandan Lau, Brian Jr., Scott and Hannah Gocklin. Wounded at Dunkirk, he survived the sinking of two merchant ships on which he served during World War II.
