Carol Wilgus
Carol Carpenter Wilgus, 47, of 400 Hillcrest Ave, Findlay, OH., died at 6:51 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at her residence. She died of complications related to multiple sclerosis. She was born April 23, 1923 1954, in Chicago, IL to William W. and Dorothy S. (Jacobs) Carpenter. She married Anthony J. Wilgus on August 27, 1977, and he survives. Also surviving are her mother, of Hinsdale, IL; two daughters, Taryn C. Wilgus of Stanford, CA., Amanda C. Wilgus of Bloomington, IN; three brothers, David W. Carpenter of Chicago, IL., Donald L. Carpenter of Adrian, MI., Douglas J. Carpenter of Buffalo Grove, IL. She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Stephen G. Carpenter. Mrs. Wilgus was a social worker, and she worked in the fields of child welfare and gerontology. She graduated as valedictorian from Hinsdale Central High School in 1972. She received her B.A. in psychology from Stanford University in 1976 and her Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 1978. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Blanchard Valley. She also volunteered for Findlay City Schools and the Open Arms Council on Domestic Violence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the College First Church of God, in Findlay, OH., with G. Richard Kern officiating. Visitation will be held from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Kirkpatrick - Behnke Funeral Home, Findlay, OH. Memorials may be made to the National M.S. Society, the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, or the Unitarian Universalist Church of Blanchard Valley.

Mrs. William (Dora-Lee) Barron Beard, age 88, of Beach City, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2002 following a period of declining health. She was born at Beach City, the daughter of the late William H. and Frances Shetler Kanagy and was a life resident of Beach City. She retired in 1976 from Fairless Local Schools, as secretary at the Beach City Elementary. A member of United Methodist Church and Legion Auxiliary both of Beach City. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Barron in 1971. Surviving are her husband, William E. Beard, whom she married December 21, 1973, of the residence; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Daniel (Lucinda) Altstaetter of Ada, OH, Mrs. James (Belinda) Code of Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Johnnie Whalen of Strasburg, John (Butch) and Susan Beard of Bolivar; one sister, Mary Jean Kanagy of Millersburg; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be held Monday, January 14, 2002 at 11 a.m. in Lantzer Funeral Home, Beach City, with Rev. Jeff Coggins officiating. Interment will be made in South Lawn Cemetery, Beach City. Earl J. Starcher
Loved by all who knew him, Earl J. Jim Starcher, age 67, of North Canton, died in his home January 10, 2002. A retired truck driver and member of Local #348; he was employed with Reynolds Trucking, Uniontown Top Soil, and Gross Redi-Mix. A US Army Veteran, he was a graduate of Hartville High School where he was a three sport letterman and continued on to play football for the Army. An avid bowler, he achieved his goal of a perfect 300 game, and was a member of the Tuesday North Canton Merchant's League, the Friday North Canton Senior Elks League and the Senior Travel League. He also was a member of the North Canton Eagles, Aerie #2223 and the North Canton Elks, #2029. In addition to his loving mother, Lillian J. (Wright) Starcher, he is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lieselotte Lilo Oberst Starcher; daughter and son-in-law, Gabriela and David Simon; daughter, Kathy Ann Myers, all of North Canton; sister and brother-in-law, Lilly Mae and Bill Wright of Springfield, OH; grandsons, T.J. and Michael D. Simon and Christopher D. Myers who were the light of his life; also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by his father, Earl E. Starcher; sister, Sandra Sue Tanksley. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Karlo Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Cain officiating. Interment will be in St. Jacob's Cemetery. Elaine B. Woods
Elaine B. Woods, age 73, departed her earthly life to meet her personal Saviour, Jesus Christ, January 10, 2002. Elaine blessed the lives of others with her caring and giving spirit. She loved to collect seashells and to work crafts of many types. Her greatest love being her grandchildren next to confirming the Lord Jesus as her Saviour. Preceded in death by her husband, Dick and brother, Gerald Wenker. She is survived by daughter, Barbara Memer; son, Richard (Cindy) Woods; grandchildren, Mark, Christie, Stacy and Jeff Memer, Ryan, Aaron and Megan Woods; sister, June Trettel; several nieces and nephews; and loving friends. Memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Monday, January 14, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the New Beginning Nazarene Church, 5640 Portage St. NW, N. Canton, OH 44720. (330-494-2375). Gladys M. Lyons
Gladys M. Lyons, age 78 of Canton died Wednesday afternoon in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born December 3, 1923 in North Industry, OH to the late Albert and Eva Hechtel. She was a graduate of McKinley High School and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by her husband, David Lyons, one brother, Albert Hechtel and one sister, Laura Sue Murphy. Survivors include her son, Daniel Lyons of Coshocton, OH and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Jim Surbey of North Canton, Donna and Elmer (Sparky) Porter of Maryland and Wilma Purney of Oregon. There are numerous nieces and nephews also surviving. Memorial services will be conducted Monday at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2705 6th St., SW with Rev. Stanley Wallace officiating, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church for the purchase of Children's Books.
Helen E. Kuemerle
Helen E. Kuemerle, age 84, of Stow, died Jan. 9, 2002. Born in Canton, she had lived in Stow since 1946 and retired from the Stow Schools as a cafeteria worker. Mrs. Kuemerle was also a member of Stow Alliance Fellowship since 1963. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, John F.; daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Curtis Gunter of Stow; granddaughters, Sheila Marie and Kaila Sheree Gunter; sister, Betty Jane Weingard of Salem; 13 foster children; many nieces. Pastor John Cervone will conduct service Monday at 11 a.m. at Stow Alliance Fellowship, 4460 Stow Rd., where friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial in Stow Cemetery. Patricia O. McKimie, age 66, of North Canton, passed away at her home Thursday morning. Born in Johnstown, PA, she is the daughter of the late Wellington and Olga Allison. Graduate of McKinley High School, Class of '54 and member of Zion Lutheran Church of North Canton. Survived by her husband, Ronald D. McKimie, to whom she was married 47 years; her children and their spouses, Frank and Charlotte McKimie, Kathy and Joe Hale, Shawn McKimie; sister and brother-in-law, Dorcas and Richard Hoover; brother and sister-in-law, Wellington and Peggy Allison. Rita M. Lindsay
Rita M. Lindsay, age 95, of 5438 Market Ave. North, Canton, OH., died Friday, January 11, 2002, in Aultman Hospital. Born July 2, 1906, in Sebring, OH., daughter of the late Robert Mauer and Anna Carson. She managed the former Ash Hat Shop in Salem, and formerly worked at Jean Frocks in Salem. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Salem since 1936; member of Church Women United, the Alta Peterson Circle of the church; and Business Professional Women in Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974, James Lindsay, who she married in 1926. Survived by daughter, Phyllis A. Kuhns of Canton, OH; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 14, 2002, at 11 a.m., in the Stark Memorial Chapel, Salem, OH., with Chaplain Paul Rudy officiating. Ruth A. (Rothacher) Carper
Ruth A. (Rothacher) Carper, age 91 formerly of Canton, OH and more recently residing in Elyria, OH passed away Wednesday evening in the Center Ridge Nursing Home in North Ridgeville, OH following an extended illness. Born in Canton on April 25, 1910 she was the daughter of the late, William and Olive Cobb. She was retired as Parish Visitor for the Dueber United Methodist Church, retiring in 1985 after 25 years of service. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Canton. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters, along with her first husband, George A. Rothacher who passed away in 1976 and her second husband, Warren P. Carper who passed away in 1996. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, George and Marian Rothacher of Mansfield, OH and her daughter, Laura Laser of Elyria, OH; one step-daughter, Janet Terry of Massillon, OH and one step-son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lynn Carper of Farmdale, OH. There are six grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Wanda Olmutz
Wanda Maddy Snyder Olmutz, age 91, formerly of Canton, died Sunday afternoon after a short illness. Mrs. Olmutz was born in Marion County, Iowa, attended Iowa State Teachers College, and retired from American Electric Power. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Olmutz and son, John L. Snyder. She is survived by daughter, Sandra Laurenson (James) of Sagamore Hills; stepdaughter, Laurie Leach (John) of Cape Coral, FL; grandsons, Del Snyder of Kailua, HI and Gregory Paul Thatcher of Lexington; granddaughter, Amy Thatcher-Benza (Robert); stepgrandson, John Paul Leach of Canfield; and great-grandchildren, Shawn Snyder, Victoria and Micah Benza and Kayla, Nolan and Gregory Thatcher. She will be fondly remembered for her zest for living and caring. Weston J. Heiks
Weston J. Heiks, call sign K8YLK, age 83, of Minvera, passed away suddenly Wednesday afternoon in Pelzer, SC. Born in Orrville, OH, a son of the late Chauncey and Magdelena Troyer Heiks, he was a life resident of the Canton area, residing the last six years in Minerva. Mr. Heiks was a 1936 graduate of Louisville High School and was a member of Disabled American Veterans St. Mihiel Chapter 6. He retired in 1980 from the Hoover Co., after 15 years service, in the maintenance department. He previously worked as a motorcycle mechanic at Earl Appleby Harley-Davidson. Mr. Heiks was an avid amateur radio operation since 1936, having been a member of the Carroll County and Stark County Amateur Radio Clubs. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pauline Heiks, on Feb. 4, 1968; a daughter, Bonnie Heiks-Warner; and a sister, Ruby Kahler. Survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Lois Heiks, of Pelzer, SC, and Barry and Susan Heiks of Minerva; and seven grandchildren, Noel, Adam, Bryan, Nathaniel, Graig, Joshua and Megan. Services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Formet-Clevenger Gordon Funeral Home with Rev. Manley C. Pierce officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Willie H. Jackson
Willie H. Jackson, age 60, departed this life on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, following a very courageous battle with cancer. Willie was born on June 23, 1941, in Demopolis, AL. He was a retired supervisor of the Timken Co., working 40 years. Preceded in death by his father, Willie Jackson Sr.; uncle, Harrison Evans; mother, Sophia Haywood. He attended South Market Grade School, graduated from McKinley High School in 1959, also attended Kent State University/
Stark Campus. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. He was in the Air Force, Crew Chief, repairing missiles, Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH, Chanute Air Force Base in Rantool. IL. He was a 33 degree Mason, Past Worshipful Master, Hiram Abiff Lodge #72, Golgotha Commandery #36, St. Luke Chapter #33, RAM, Bezaleel Consistory #15, Alkas Temple #109. He enjoyed classic automobiles, landscaping, boating, coin collecting, hunting and gun collecting. Willie leaves to cherish his precious memories his loving and devoted wife, Betty Jackson; sons, Michael (Corrennia) Jackson, Gregory (Erica) Jackson, Jeffery Freeman; stepdaughter, Charisse Ray of Atlanta, GA; stepfather, King Haywood Sr.; father-in-law, Rev. John Wynne Sr.; mother-in-law, Leola J. Wynne; sisters, Bertha Hill of Far-Rockaway, NY, Dorothy Ann Cooper; sister-in-law, Lorraine B.
