George Keglovic
George Keglovic, 77, of Montville Township, died early Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, one day short of his 78th birthday, at his home after a long battle with emphysema.
He was a lifelong resident of Northeast Ohio and was born and raised in Orange. He left in 1943 for the Army. After basic training at Camp Perry, he spent the next 18 months at various stateside posts before finally boarding a ship for the European front shortly before Thanksgiving 1944. Mr. Keglovic was a member of the 263rd Regiment of the 66th Infantry Division, the Black Panthers. The division was in England throughout December, awaiting orders to go to the front. The call came when Germany attacked in the Battle of the Bulge.
The 66th was slated to go straight to the 3rd Army's front lines when the troops arrived in France, but about a third of them never made it across the English Channel. A German U-boat torpedoed the troopship SS Leopoldville, killing a major portion of two regiments. As a result, Keglovic's regiment was then assigned to blockade duty outside Brest, a channel port held by the Nazis. After the German troops finally surrendered Brest, his unit was assigned to garrison duty in Austria.
Following the war, Mr. Keglovic worked as a quartermaster and courier. It was during one of the courier missions that he had his closest brush with death. After attending a celebration for some friends going back to the United States, he was to take a train across Austria on a courier run. Since it was to be a long trip, he decided to sleep in the mail car. As the train went through the Soviet occupation zone, it was machine-gunned by Soviet troops and a number of Allied soldiers sitting in the passenger cars were killed or wounded.
By the time he was discharged in April 1946, he had advanced to the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. He also received the American and European Theater ribbons, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge and Rifle Marksman's Badge.
Two months after discharge, he married his pre-war sweetheart, Anne Zimsek. He later worked for Continental Can Co. and Stone Container Corp., which took over Continental. He also worked at Sears, Roebuck & Co.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Thomas) Burnett and their son, Ryan, all of Medina; sister, Alice; and brothers, Charles and Leo.
