Maynard M. Salem
Maynard M. (Moady) Salem, 91, of Akron, died Feb. 19, 1998.
Maynard had lived in Akron since 1920, and retired from Salem Potato Chip Co. in 1976. Moady was an avid golfer and bowler, and a veteran of World War II.
Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth; son, Sam Reynolds; daughter, Judith Kelly; great-grandson, Aaron Wilkinson; and brothers and sisters, he is survived by children and spouses, Ruth (Gene) Midcap, Mary Susan (Richard) Bartek, Claudia (David) Burdge; brothers, Bill (Laura) Salem, all of Akron, Lee (Carolyn) Salem of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Sophie Salem; son-in-law, Harvey Kelly, both of Akron; daughter-in-law, Betty Reynolds; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Sarlson, 98, passed away Feb. 16, 1998.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Morris Louis, and is survived by her loving sons, Irwin David and Stanford; grandchildren, Margaret Chesler, Mark Sarlson, and Katherine Sarlson; and three great-grandsons.

She was a lifetime resident of the area, and a member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.

Neda D. Serves, (Novak), 74, passed away Feb. 22, 1998 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Akron, she was a graduate of West High School, and enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with her friends at the Shady Hollow Country Club and was an avid sports fan.
She was a loving and devoted wife to husband, Sam, with whom she spent 49 wonderful years; was a loving mother to daughters, Sandra (Daniel) Burrell of California, Susan Serves, and Sharon (Jeffrey) Mraz. She cherished her time as a grandmother with Kyle, Joshua, Emily and Chad. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Tula; nieces, Bobbie Wolfe and Paula Thompson; and nephew, Doug Basford.

BARBERTON -- Elizabeth Sest, 96, died Feb. 25, 1998, at Pleasantview Health Care Center.
She was born in Middletown, Pa., and resided for the last 28 years in Barberton. She attended St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Barberton.
Preceded in death by husband, Anthony; daughter, Lucille Stock; one grandson; and son-in-law, Paul Dozmati, she is survived by son, Vernon L. Brown of Barberton; daughter, Evelyn Dozmati of Norton; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Ann (Guinan) Sheldon died Feb. 16, 1998, after a brief illness.
Born in Connecticut, she took her nurse's training at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford and moved to Ohio 29 years ago. A member of St. Hilary Catholic Church, the Akron Woman's City Club, and the Fairlawn Garden Club, she worked at the Village at St. Edward in Fairlawn.
She leaves her husband, Warren Robert; children, Robert of Chicago, William of San Francisco, Paul of New York, John (Beth) of Copley, Elizabeth Ann (Paul) Testa of Clinton; grandchildren, Jeremy and Ryan Sheldon.

Ganel Eileen (Crozier) Shimp
Ganel Eileen (Crozier) Shimp, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 26, 1998, at Akron City Hospital, from complications of the flu.
She was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Akron, and attended the Springfield High School Class of 1938. Mrs. Shimp lived in Akron from 1938 until 1954, moving to Ellet in 1955. She was a member of the Evangel Temple, worked at Montgomery Ward and D.P.W. Co., and was a housewife.
Preceded in death by infant son, Richard Glenn Crozier; first husband, Robert Glenn Crozier Sr.; parents, Wayne and Clara Carpenter; and sister, Kathryn Wright, she is survived by loving husband, Ralph J. WADSWORTH -- Grace K. Shoup, 82, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, following a period of illness.
Mrs. Shoup was born in Orrville and resided in Wadsworth since 1937, where she was a member of the First Mennonite Church, Women Mission Service, and Church Women United. She was also a cook and delivery person for Meals on Wheels, and a Red Cross volunteer.
In addition to her husband, Ira, Mrs. Shoup is survived by children, Ruth (Larry) Yarman of Wadsworth, Larry (Verla) of Northville, Mich., Lois (Reikki) Benham of Lima, Kenneth (Jan) of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Donald (Mary) of Doylestown, Pamela (Jeffry) Huebner of Schaumburg, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Mary Esther Schmid of Orrville. She was preceded in death by parents; and brother, Walter Schmid.

Rev. Dolphis A. Sloan, Jr., 32, went home to be with the Lord, February 14, 1998, at Akron General Medical Center after a short illness.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he had lived in this community since 1983. He was employed by A. Schulman as a chemical engineer for the past 10 years and served as Pastor of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, Cleveland, Ohio, for two years.
He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Debra Vinson Sloan; daughter, Amber; son, Andrew, all of Akron; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dolphis Sloan, Sr.; sisters, Wilhelmina Reese, all of Oakwood Village, Ohio, Dwan (Benjamin) Davis, and Diane (Charles) Rhynes, all of Akron; grandparents, Luberta Sloan of Warrensville Heights, Ohio and Wilhelmenia Stowe of Cleveland, Ohio; father and mother-in-law, Elder and Mrs. Lawrence Vinson of Akron; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

JoAnn Smith, 68, went home to be with the Lord, after a good fight.
She was born in Akron and married her childhood sweetheart, Jim Smith. JoAnn was always there for everyone who ask for help, and will be missed very much.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 1986 and her daughter, Helen in 1982. She is survived by sons, James R., Michael L. (Edith); daughters, Candace Sue Smith, Nancy L. JoDee (Donald) Leap. She will be greatly missed by all her 28 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She had many special friends, they know who they are.

Mrs. Smith was born in England and had lived in Akron most of her life. She was a homemaker.

Walter Stephens, 64, departed from this earthly life to his heavenly home on Feb. 17, 1998, at Bath Manor.
Born in Evergreen, Ala., he had lived as a respected member of the Akron community for 48 years. He was retired from Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., was a member of United Baptist Church, and an honorably discharged United States Army veteran. He was also a member of U.R.W. Local 5, Phoenix Lodge 112, Bezebel Consistory 15, and Al Kaf Temple 109.

Mary Helen Stoneking, 81, formerly of Silver Oaks, and a Kent resident for over 40 years, died Monday at Hutton II in Salem.
She was born April 14, 1916, in Glenville, W. Va., to Okey W. and Gertrude (Jackson) Gochenour. She enjoyed being with her family, poetry, gardening, sewing, and collecting antiques. She was also an avid supporter of Kent Hot Stove Baseball.
Survivors include her sons, Charles (Virginia) of Winter Haven, Fla., Michael (Helen) of Akron; daughters, Marie (Ford) Smith of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Betty (Blair) Cruise of Ravenna, JoAnne (John) Popa of Salem; 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings Stoneking, in 1976; and by brothers, Wayne Gochenour, Charles Gochenour, James Gochenour; sisters, Betty Darrin and Lucille Earney; one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

Born in Augusta, Ga., she had lived in this community over 70 years. She was a member of First Apostolic Faith Church.
She is survived by daughter, Mildred Skipper; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Reynolds Meriweather of Akron; special niece, attorney LaVonne Meriweather; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Idabelle (Torchie) Sullivan (nee Harris), 90, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998.
She was a lifetime area resident, and retired from Social Security.
Preceded in death by husband, Gerald; and nephew, Richard Harris, she is survived by grandnephews, Jeff, Scott, Todd Harris of California, and Mark Harris of Wisconsin; also many cousins and friends.
