Thelma Pauline Lemon
ROOTSTOWN - Thelma Pauline Lemon, 100, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at her home.
Born Dec. 10, 1899 in Little Creek, Ohio, she was the daughter of Buford and Mary (Wilson) Richardson. She had lived in Brady Lake for 46 years before moving to Rootstown in 1985.
Mrs. Lemon was a homemaker. She had taught at an elementary school in Piney Fork, Ohio.
She was a member of Lake Brady United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School.
She attended Kent State Normal School.
Survivors include her sons, John (Inez) of Ravenna, Jay Jr. (Helen) of Rootstown and Alan of Brady Lake; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and brother, Paul of Delaware, Ohio. Her husband, Jay Sr., died May 4, 1957, and her son, Robert, died in 1999. Her sister, Muriel McCue, and brothers, Desmond and Harold, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel (www.legacy.com), where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Edward Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Ralph L. Shuman
Ralph L. Shuman, 84, of Ravenna, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at his home.
Born March 12, 1916 in Barnesville, Ohio, he was the son of Roy and Julia (DeLong) Shuman. He moved to Ravenna in 1976 from Lorain.
Mr. Shuman retired from the Cleveland Graffite Bronze Company, where he was a mechanical engineer.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ravenna
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his son, Donald (Nancy) of California; daughters, Mrs. Earl (Sue) Starnes of Perry and Mrs. Bud (Julie) Minor of Aurora; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Dale and Denver, and sisters, Loretta and Louise. His wife, Helen, died in June 1998.
Calling hours will be held from 1 p.m. until services at 3 p.m. Thursday at Wood Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. The Rev. Tom Poremba will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.
Patricia Sargiovanni
MANTUA - Patricia Sargiovanni, 64, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto, Canada, following an unexpected illness.
Born Dec. 23, 1935, in Crucible, Pa., she was the daughter of Stephen and Anna (Kmetz) Havanas. Formerly of Pa., she was a Mantua resident since 1957.
Mrs. Sargiovanni was a homemaker.
She was member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua, where she was a former president of the St. Joseph's Home and School Organization and was active for many years with the St. Joseph's Ox Roast Fair. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband James Sr., whom she married Aug. 14, 1954; sons James (Teresa) Jr. and Dino (Christina); daughters Dorinda (Thomas) Sterpka and Gina (Joseph) Fischione, all of Mantua; five grandchildren; brother Frank (Julie) Havanas of Morgantown, W. Va.; sister Dorothy (Morrie) Otchis of Culver City, Calif. Three brothers and four sisters died previously.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where prayer services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua, with Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.
Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to St. Joseph's School Trust Fund in her name.
Kathryn E. Van Horn
ROOTSTOWN - Kathryn E. Van Horn, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at her home following a period of declining health.
Born July 25, 1923, in Woodsfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of George and Dortha (Vickers) Stephens.
Mrs. Van Horn was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Heritage Church of God in Brady Lake.
Survivors include her sons, Harold (Julie) of Kent, Merle of Rootstown and Charles of Streetsboro; daughters, Dorothy (Roby) Belcher of Rootstown, Thelma of Gainesville, Fla., Norma (Jay) LeMasters of Kent and Sherri (Lee) Smith of Kent; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and sister, Ruth Kyser of Akron. Her husband, William, died in 1977. A son, William, died in 1979. Her daughter, Carol, died in 1949 and her daughter, Mildred, died in 1981.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. C.T. Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
Ray D. Gerber
Ray D. Gerber, 70, of San Mateo, Fla., died Aug. 29, 2000, at his home.
Born May 11, 1931, in Ravenna, he was the son of William and Alice M. Gerber. He was a Ravenna High School graduate.
Mr. Gerber served four years in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen, to whom he was married 44 years; son, Bruce; daughter, Kim Melton; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. His sister, Jean Sanderson, died previously.
Graveside services were held Aug. 31 at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Garden in Clearwater, Fla., handled arrangements.
James McDowell, 71
STREETSBORO - James W. McDowell, 71, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Aug. 29, 1929 in Uniontown, Pa., he was the son of Harry and Donna McDowell. He had lived in Cleveland before moving to Streetsboro two years ago.
Mr. McDowell retired from Ohio Crankshaft in Cleveland, where he was a millwright.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Survivors include his sons, Ronald of Chagrin Falls and Robert of Shalersville; three grandchildren; brothers, Clyde and Thomas, both of Uniontown, Pa.; and sisters, Betty Rotze and Mabel Brownfield, both of Uniontown, Pa.
Visitation will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Homes, Streetsboro Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro.

George H. Stonestreet
George H. Stonestreet, 71, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000 at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna.
Born Nov. 7, 1928 in Cuyahoga Falls, he was the son of Purl and Rosealtha (Groomes) Stonestreet. He had lived in Ravenna for 43 years.
Mr. Stonestreet was a tool and die welder. He retired in 1998 from the Chrysler Stamping Plant in Twinsburg after 40 years of service.
He was a life member of the Ravenna Elks No. 1076, an active member of the Ravenna Balloon-A-Fair committee and a member of the Tree City Campers. He was an avid bowler and golfer and was one of the leading round track motorcycle riders in the state of Ohio.
He served in the Ohio National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Ann (Jacks), to whom he was married 47 years; sons, William (Deryl) of Palmer, Alaska and Gary of Warren; daughter, Tari (John) Lyon of Miami, Fla.; stepdaughters, Diana Anderson Allensworth of Ravenna and Sheri Anderson (David) Kemble of Maryland; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Robert of Ravenna; and sisters, June (Ken) Neff of Ravenna, Carolyn of Kent and Eileen of Florida. His brothers, Bill and Jack, died previously.

Betty R. Canan Knight
Betty R. Canan Knight, 67, of Ocala, Fla., the mother of two Portage County residents, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, after a long illness.
Born April 13, 1933, in Clarksburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Roy and Sarah (Robinson) Barker.
Mrs. Knight was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Rexel "Rex" D. of Ocala; son Donald Canan of Garrettsville; daughter, Judy (Russ) Pushwal of Garrettsville; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and brother, Everett Barker of Niles. Her first husband, Lewis "Lou" W. Canan, died Jan. 5, 1986. Her brothers Harry, Boyd, Clifford and Floyd, and sister, Sally Robinson, died previously.

Patricia J. Nevin
Patricia J. Nevin, 58, of Ravenna, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, after a long illness.
Born April 24, 1942 in Grantsville, W.Va., she was the daughter of Clifford and Elah (Kirby) Gibson.
Mrs. Nevin was an inspector for Bedford Anodizing Co.
Survivors include her husband, Dale of Ravenna; son, Randy of Ravenna; daughters, Tammy (Bill) Rogers of Atwater and Margie (Tom) Daniels of Kent; three grandchildren; brothers, Harold Gibson of Bristolville, Dwayne Gibson of Champion and Gerald Gibson and Larry Gibson, both of Ravenna; and sister, Bonnie Facemire of Cuyahoga Falls.

Harvis M. Cheatum
Harvis M. Cheatum, 82, of Sterling, Va., died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000.
Born in Alabama, he lived in Lauderdale and Franklin County, Ala., and in Twinsburg before moving to Virginia.
Mr. Cheatum was a die cast operator with IT&T Lester.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his sons, Charles (Rose Walkins) of Streetsboro and Thomas of Florence, Ala.; daughters, Linda (Ken) Dyer of Virginia and Susan (Dan) Reusel of Ravenna; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Verneal Taylor and Lucille Taylor, both of Cleveland. His wife, Ruby (Retherford), died previously.
Graveside services were held at Mount Olive Cemetery near Waterloo, Ala. Arrangements were made by Elkins Funeral Home in Florence, Ala.
Elsie Margaret McFarland
Elsie Margaret McFarland, 84, of 4500 S.R. 82 NW, Braceville, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000 in Marietta.
Born June 27, 1916 in Wynona, she was the daughter of Charles Edward and Elizabeth Mae (Norman) Whinery. She had lived in Braceville most of her life.
Mrs. McFarland earned a teaching degree from Kent State University and was a teacher in the Windham, Garrettsville and Braceville School Districts for more than 40 years.
She was a member of the Braceville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Stan of Marietta, Fred of Braceville and Charles of Campellsburg, Ky.; a daughter, Doris (Thomas) Davis of Athens; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Clifford Whinery of Salem; and a sister, Dorothy (Russell) Doyle of Alliance. Her husband, George E., whom she married June 15, 1939, died Sept. 2, 1988.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Braceville United Methodist Church.
Frank A. Wince
EDINBURG - Frank A. Wince, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Aug. 8, 1920 in Uniontown, he was the son of Louis and Lydia (Matyus) Wince.
Mr. Wince retired from General Electric in Ravenna.
He was a master drill sergeant with the Airborne Rangers during World War II.
Survivors include his son, Thomas (Francine) of Bath; daughter, Rebecca (James) Willoughby of Atwater; two grandchildren; brother, James (Delores); and sisters, Rose (Joseph) Nemeth, Elizabeth Wince and Margaret Choban.

Dale E. Gillespie
Dale E. Gillespie, 80, of 24 Jay St., Newton Falls, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital of a heart attack.
Born March 26, 1920 in Newton Falls, he was the son of Paul and Ica (Stout) Gillespie. He was a lifetime Newton Falls resident.
Mr. Gillespie was a heater helper at Republic Steel in Warren until he retired in 1982. He also was an antique dealer, buying and selling as a hobby.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his sons, Roger of Canfield, David M. of Columbus; daughters, Carol Shrader of Brookfield and Julia Burr of Clinton, Miss.; and 12 grandchildren. His sister, Eva Kinel, died June 17, 1995.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery.

Dewey L. Logan
Dewey L. Logan, 71, of 1902 Lovers Lane N.W., Warren, died of complications from open heart surgery Monday, Sept. 11, 2000 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
Born Feb. 10, 1929, in Warren, he was the son of Arthur Dewey and Treva Mae (Swartz) Logan. He was a lifetime area resident.
Mr. Logan was a millwright for LTV Steel Corp. for 42 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a peace time U.S. Army veteran.
He enjoyed flea markets, NASCAR racing, stock car racing, go-kart racing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his son, Arthur D. of Newton Falls; daughter, Virginia "Jenny" Chagnot of Leavittsburg; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sisters, Francis Jewell and Winifred "Winnie" Trivanovich, both of Newton Falls. A sister, Doris Logan, died previously.

Former Streetsboro resident Martha (Marty) Blue, 43, of Clearwater, Fla., died Sept. 6.
Survivors include husband, David Blue; father, Buddy Sheppard of Tenn.; mother, Judy of Akron; brothers, Burt and Buddy Sheppard; and sisters, Debbie and Ruth.
