Laura Andrews, 84
Services will be held Thursday for Laura (Cain) Andrews, 84, of Southington, formerly of Garrettsville, who died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren after several months of failing health.
Born Jan. 11, 1916, in Hamilton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Henry and Della (Tickle) Cain.
Mrs. Andrews was employed for 19 years at Polson Rubber in Garrettsville.
She was an avid baker and enjoyed crafts and ballroom dancing.
Survivors include her son, Howard (Rena) of Freedom; daughter, Grace (William) Long of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, James "Bud" Cain, John Cain, Clyde Cain, Robert Cain and Harold Cain, all of Freedom, Edgar "Pete" Cain of Ravenna, Lloyd Cain of Nelson and Don McCort of Arizona; and sister, Josie Underhill of Albuquerque, N.M. Her husband, Raymond "Andy" Andrews, whom she married Nov. 14, 1933, died Dec. 6, 1983. A brother, Raymond "Sonny" Cain, and sisters, Rose Dean and Mildred Vandrasec, also died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. The Rev. Fred Bell will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Garrettsville.
Pearl Gardner, 79
GARRETTSVILLE - Pearl E. Gardner, 79, of North Street, died at home Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, of cancer.
Born Jan. 8, 1921 in Brittain, she was the daughter of Chancey D. and Hattie (Haights) Dickerhoof. Formerly of Wayland, she moved to Garrettsville eight years ago.
Mrs. Gardner retired in 1986 after 11 years as a cook at Southeast Schools. She was active at the Garretthouse in Garrettsville organizing activities and taxiing. She enjoyed ceramics and many other hobbies.
Survivors include her son, Richard of Garrettsville; daughters, Donna (Donald) Craver of Garrettsville, Luella Bika of Akron, Barbara (Earl) Quinn of Wayland and Judy (Jay) Sprague of Warren; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Donald Dickerhoof of Ravenna. Her husband, Joseph O. Gardner, whom she married Aug. 14, 1937, died Dec. 24, 1979. Her brothers, Glenn and Robert; and sister, Dorothy Sheppard, died previously.

Eileen Gavit, 73
MANTUA - Eileen M. Gavit, 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born July 20, 1926, in Maple Heights, she was the daughter of Russell and Elizabeth (Gruber) Raker. She had been a Mantua resident since 1946.
Mrs. Gavit worked 14 years at Lakeside Nursing Home in Mantua as a nurses' aide. She retired in 1991 from Technicare in Solon where she was an assembler.
Mrs. Gavit was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua.
Survivors include her son, Joe, (Carolyn) of Mantua; daughters, Lois (Chuck) Eisele of Shalersville, Marie (Michael) Bucher of Ashville, N.C., and Barb Hoffman of Solon; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. and brothers, John (Kay) Raker of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Bill (Sally) Raker of Medina. Her husband, Louis J., died in 1959. A son, Louis Jr., daughter, Frances, and brother, Fred, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua, with the Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.

Walter Ames Jr., 76
Walter Ames Jr., 76, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000 at his home.
Born Feb. 28, 1923 in Langville, Pa., he was the son of Walter J. Sr. and Ethel (Doverspike) Ames. A Ravenna resident since 1956, he spent his youth in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Ames was a lumberman, traveling extensively through the U.S. and Canada to locate the species of trees necessary for special architectural millwork and industrial use.
He had been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ravenna since 1956, serving on various committees over the years.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1947.
He was raised a Master Mason in Unity Masonic Lodge No. 12 in Ravenna on March 2, 1959. He served as worshipful master in 1967, exalted in Tyrian Chapter No. 91; greeted in Akron Council No. 80; knighted in Akron Commandry No. 25; D.D.G.M. of the 25th District from 1970 through 1972; member of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 46; appointed grand representative to the Grand Lodge of Italy; member of R.O.S.; member R.O.J. No. 80; ambassador of Tadmor Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S.; received the Degree of Scottish Rite Masonry, Valley of Canton in 1959; received the Meritorious Service Award, Valley of Canton, which was presented by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale in 1970; was created a Sovereign Grand Inspector General 33rd Degree, member of the Supreme Council A.A.S.R on Sept. 26, 1973 in Detroit.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine F. (Caylor), whom he married in August 1947; son, Jerry W.; daughter, Susan L. Kunkel of St. Marys, Pa.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Kurtis Krebs, 9
Kurtis Dean Krebs, 9, of Fredericksburg, Ohio, who had relatives in the Portage area, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, after a long battle with neuroblastoma cancer.
Born Aug. 11, 1990 in Cleveland, he was the son of Kenneth R. and Sherry B. Glenn Krebs.
Kurtis was a student in the TriWay School District at Franklin Elementary School. He was a member of the Junior Ohio Holstein Association.
Survivors include his parents, Kenneth R. and Sherry B. (Glenn) of Fredericksburg; sister, Kassandra Rae, at home; grandparents, Dean and Carolyn Glenn of Butler Township, and Ray and Linda Krebs of Streetsboro; and great-grandmother, Irene Lawrence of Ashland.

BRIMFIELD - Olga Geisinger, 88, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.
She was the daughter of Peter and Maria Kolesar and had lived for many years in the Brimfield area.
Survivors include her sons, Jerome Sr. and Dennis; daughter, Gwendolyn Begin; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Carl Kolesar; and sister, Esther Reinker. Her husband, Wilbur, died previously.

Justine Coddington, 70
Justine M. Coddington, 70, of 619 Ophelia Rd., Newton Falls, died Monday Jan. 24 at St. Josephs Hospital in Warren.
Born July 10, 1929 in Warren, she was the daughter of John and Josephine (Frankie) Ronyak. She had lived in the area for 55 years.
Mrs. Coddington was a Catholic, a leader of the Campfire, and was on the Trumbull County Board of Elections.
She graduated from the Newton Falls school system and attended Warren Business College. She enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her son, Wilbur E. Jr. of Newton Falls; daughters, Marcia (Richard) Post of Hartford, Monica (Ernest) Lewis of Newton Falls, Laura (Dennis) Holko of Mecca; sisters, Patricia Thompson of Warren, Margaret Spletzer of Newton Falls; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, Wilbur E., whom she married Feb. 23 1949, died April 9, 1995, and her brother, Johnny Ronyak died Jan. 3, 2000.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday.

Hilda Knight, 90
Former Ravenna resident Hilda E. Knight, 90, of 3128 Niles, Cortland N.E., Bazetta Township, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at her home.
Born Oct. 2, 1909 in Jewell, she was the daughter of Martin and Ella (Bensing) Brobst. Formerly of Naples, Fla., and Ravenna, she moved to Cortland in 1972. She was a 1927 graduate of Cortland High School.
Mrs. Knight was a homemaker.
She a member of Episcopal churches in Ravenna and Naples, Fla., and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Ravenna. She was a founding member of the Fine Arts Guild in Ravenna and active with Rainbow Girls in Ravenna.
An accomplished seamstress, she enjoyed needlepoint and oil painting.
Survivors include her husband, Richard "Dick," whom she married Aug. 4, 1972; son, William Morton of Naples, Fla.; daughter, Kay (Pete) Morton Davies of Vista, Calif.; stepsons, W. Rea Knight of Hiram and Richard C. Knight of Fort White, Fla.; stepdaughter, Lorraine McGuire of Columbus; 14 grandchildren; and sister, Zeola (Paul) Retterer of Dunedin, Fla. Her first husband, William Morton, whom she married Jan. 4, 1941, died in 1969. Eight brothers and eight sisters died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cortland United Methodist Church. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Home in Cortland. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.

Fred Kline, 79
Fred C. Kline, 79, of Kent, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Jan. 28, 1920 in Kent, he was the son of Lester and Ethel (Potts) Kline.
Mr. Kline had been a foreman with U.S. Concrete Pipe in Diamond.
A World War II veteran, he served stateside with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose.
Survivors include his sons, Fred E. of Landen, Ohio, and Charles of Newton Falls; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Earl of Mexico; and sisters, Bertha Phillips of Brimfield, Irene Neading of Stow, Frances Stone of Chardon, Rita Condit of Granbury, Texas, Louise Williamson of Akron and Lucille Buchanan of Hudson. His wife, Leona, died in 1990. His brothers, Leonard and Glen; and sister, Marie, died previously.

Elva Young, 88
Elva D. Young, 88, of Ravenna Township, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Oct. 27, 1911, in Tennessee she was the daughter of Thomas and Etola (Huddleston) Dillon. She had been a Portage County resident since 1969.
Mrs. Young retired as a blueprint supervisor at Addressagraph-Multigraph of Cleveland.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Ravenna, a charter member of the Streetsboro Kiwanis Club, a member of the Federated Democratic Women's Club, and had served on the Portage County Democratic Central Committee.
Survivors include her daughter, Glenda Enders of Ravenna Township; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Truman Dillon of Missouri; and sisters, Nell Pendergrass of Michigan, and Neva Ballenger of Akron. Her husband, Charles, died in 1975. Three sisters and two brothers died previously.

Edna Harris, 88
Former Ravenna resident Edna A. Harris, 88, of Warren, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Community Skilled Nursing Home in Warren.
Born April 18, 1911 in Ft. Wayne, Ind., she was the daughter of Sam and Millie (Goliver) Gorham. Formerly of Ravenna, she had lived in Warren for the last six months.
Mrs. Harris was a homemaker.
She belonged to the Ravenna Moose Lodge No. 1234.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth M. Robbins Sr. of Warren; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Alvie Harris, two brothers and two sisters died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and fro 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Private burial will take place.

Vivian J. Swartout, 74, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000.
Born Aug. 5, 1925, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Vincent and Josephine (Malozzi) DeLano.
Mrs. Swartout was a former employee of the Cherrys Steak House of Ravenna.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. She was an avid card player and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed an occasional day at the races or a trip to Las Vegas.
Survivors include her sons, Michael (Lisa) of Ravenna and Ralph (Tamara) of Rootstown; daughter, Susan Taugner of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; mother, Josephine DeLano of Ravenna; brothers, Mickey DeLano of Texas and Vince (Linda) DeLano of Edinburg; and sisters, Angela (James) Nagella of Ravenna and Margaret (Edwin) Stewart of Oklahoma. Her husband, George died Jan. 16, 2000. Her daughter, Deborah Ann also died previously.

Dr. M. Thomas Jones, 63
Dr. M. Thomas Jones, 63, vice provost and dean for research and graduate studies at Kent State University, died of cancer Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at his home in Hudson.
Dr. Jones had served in his post at KSU since 1995. He came to KSU from the University of Houston, where he had been an administrator and faculty member for three years. He also had served on the faculty of the University of Missouri-St. Louis for 22 years.
A St. Louis native, he earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis in 1961. He published more than 100 scholarly articles and other publications dealing with chemical physics, physical chemistry and synthetic metals.
"Tom served Kent State University with a commitment to excellence and teamwork as vice provost and dean for research and graduate studies," said KSU President Carol Cartwright. "He was a good University citizen, strongly supporting our mission and values. Those of us who worked closely with him were inspired by his positive attitude and the courageous way he faced his battle with cancer."
Walter Adams, interim vice provost and dean for research and graduate studies, said Dr. Jones "was an extremely well-informed, sensitive and thoughtful academic leader as well as an accomplished scientist. It was a pleasure to work with him, and I learned much from him."
Survivors include his wife, Pat; son, Jonathan of St. Louis; daughter, Jennifer of Redwood City, Calif.; sister, Janice Green, of Springfield, Va.; and parents, Thomas and Margaret Jones of Mexico, Mo.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service at KSU will be scheduled.
John Whalen, 89
John Joseph Whalen, 89, of Silver Oaks Drive, Kent, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Kent Center in Kent.
Born July 21, 1910 in Tuscarora, Pa., he was the son of James Patrick and Mary (Dougherty) Whalen.
Mr. Whalen worked for the Davey Tree Expert Co. in Kent from 1946 until he retired in1975. He also worked as paymaster at the Ravenna Arsenal during World War II and worked for seven years as a teacher for the Blythe Township School System in Pennsylvania before moving to Ohio.
He graduated from Villanova University in 1932 and Penn State University in 1933. He and his wife married and moved to Ohio in 1941.
He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent and Knights of Columbus Council No. 1411.
Survivors include his wife, Frances (Carroll); son John J. (Charlotte) of Cincinnati; one grandchild; and sister, Mary Burns of Newton Falls. His son, James C., died in 1984. His sisters, Rose Neill and Anna Valentine, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where Knights of Columbus services will be held at 6:45 p.m. Friday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Church in Kent. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Hazel Petrey, 79
Hazel B. Petrey, 79, of Ravenna died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 27, 1920 in Hinton, W. Va., she was the daughter of Granville M. and Lula Caroline (Wickline) Wykle.
Mrs. Petrey was a nursing assistant at the Hattie Larlham Foundation and the Portage County Nursing Home.
She was a member of Peck Road Baptist Church.
She enjoyed making crafts and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her sons, John E. Young of Arlington, Va., Fred D. Young and Clinton D. Young, both of Atwater, Arnold R. Young of Ravenna; daughters, Linda C. Adkins of Ravenna, Geneva C. Basel of Freedom, and Betty L. Adkins of Hinton, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert Petrey; son, Arthur Young; daughter, Shirley Ann Young; granddaughter, Lisa Ann Adkins; and several brothers and sisters died previously.

Faye Stacy, 81
Faye Stacy, 81, of Akron, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at her daughter's home in Brimfield.
Born in Denver, Ky., she was the daughter of Monroe and Bessie (Rice) Sublett. She moved to Akron in 1940 and lived there for 15 years until moving to Edinburg for 26 years. Upon her retirement she lived in Naples, Fla. for 14 years and moved back to Akron four years ago.
Survivors include her son, Douglas of Akron; daughters, Wanda (Larry) Hamrick of Tallmadge and Glenda (Bill) Fritz of Brimfield; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Mattison Sublett of Akron, and Chester Sublett and James Sublett, both of Kentucky; and sister, Phyllis Vincent of Akron. Her husband, Perry; brother, Donald; sister, Ethel Legg; and infant sisters, Josephine and Iona, died previously.
