Helen Shaw Avery
Helen Shaw Avery, 67, of Cuyahoga Falls, died of cancer Friday, July 18, 1998r.
Born Oct. 23, 1930 in Wilkinsburg, Pa., she had lived in the Akron area the past 32 years.
Mrs. Avery was a volunteer for the Akron Civic Theater for the past six years.
Survivors include her son, Nicholas (Deborah) Avery of Haverhill, Mass.; daughter, Elise (Charlie) Avery of Garrettsville; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Portage Trail Village, 45 Cathedral Lane, Cuyahoga Falls. Cremation has taken place and the ashes will be scattered in Pennsylvania.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron 44333.

Stephen Rapovy
Stephen T. Rapovy, 78, of Newton-Bailey Road, Warren, died Monday, July 20, 1998 at his home.
Born Nov. 1, 1919, in Youngstown, he was the son of Frank and Tekla Rapovy.
Mr. Rapovy retired from the U.S. Postal Service of Youngstown and Boardman in 1985 after 35 years of service.
He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Newton Falls. He enjoyed electronics and was an antique collector.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Mark (Jennie) Sharp of Warren, with whom he resided.; two grandchildren; brothers, John of Austintown and Pete of Youngstown.; and sisters, Mary Pazlisen of Austintown and Ann Loychik of Warren.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Borowski Funeral Home, Newton Falls. where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Newton Falls.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, 737 Ridge Road, Newton Falls.

Dominick Sullivan
Dominick Joseph Sullivan, the infant son of Patrick L. and Catherine M. (Polumbo) Sullivan, died Sunday, July 19, 1998 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his sister, Angela Marie Sullivan; grandparents, Linda Sullivan of Streetsboro, Robert and Elaine Sullivan of Ravenna; Mrs. and Mrs. Peter (Bonnie) Polumbo of Rootstown; and great-grandparents, Betty Lee of Streetsboro, Bob and Connie Sullivan of Frankfort, and Dorothy Kenward of Ravenna.
There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at Homeland Cemetery of Rootstown, with the Rev. Steve Chapman officiating. Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, is handling arrangments.

Ernest Guarneri
Ernest "Anthony" Guarneri, 56, of Kent, died Sunday, July 19, 1998.
Born Nov.r 15, 1941, in Bronyx, N.Y., he was the son of Salvatore and Lucy (Dilillo) Guarneri.
Survivors include his brothers, Joseph and Sal of Portage County; and his sister Rose of N.Y.
There will be no services. Arrangements were handled by the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Pamela Pierce
A memorial service for Pamela Taylor Pierce, a former Kent resident, will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, in the sanctuary of the United Methodist Church of Kent. A reception for family and friends will follow immediately after the service in Pierson Hall.
Mrs. Pierce, 42, died of cancer July 2, 1998 at her home in Anchorage, Alaska.

Agnes Eiben
MANTUA TOWNSHIP - Agnes Eiben died Monday, July 20, 1998, at Heather Knoll Nursing Home in Tallmadge.
Services will be announced by Green's Funral Home in Mantua.

Clifford Ballentine
Clifford Ballentine of Mantua Township died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Maplewood Care Center in Streetsboro.
Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

Walter Evanoff
Former Streetsboro resident Walter J. "Butch" Evanoff, 45, of Cleveland, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at his home.
Born Nov. 25, 1952 in Cleveland, he was the son of Walter and Sophie (Hulin) Evanoff. Formerly of Streetsboro, he had lived in Cleveland for 20 years.
Mr. Evanoff worked at the Ford Motor Co.
Survivors include his son, John of Ravenna; one grandchild; and sisters, Fran Motz of Streetsboro and Pat Voisinet of Cleveland.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro with the Rev. Frederick Slaven officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel.

Dorothy Toth
MANTUA - Dorothy E. Toth, 81, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at her home after a long illness.
Born March 8, 1917 in Akron, she was the daughter of Henry and Clara (Elliott) Barnett. She had been a Mantua resident since 1957.
Mrs. Toth retired in 1982 from Mantaline Corp., where she had been a cost accountant since 1965.
An avid reader and an animal lover, she also enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her son, Ralph E. (Ann) Dumont, Jr. of Mentor; daughters, Dorothy C. Kobus of Houston, Texas, Laura L. (Harvey Dean) McGarry of Allentown, Pa.; and Nancy C. Dumont of Mantua, with whom she shared her home; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, John Barnett of Coeburn, Va.; and sister, Karolyn Miller of Mantua. Her first husband, Ralph E. Dumont, died in 1961. Her second husband, Frank A. Toth, died in 1967. Four brothers and one sister also died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Will Stackhouse officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua.

George Wallace
MANTUA - George F. Wallace, Sr., 65, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born March 24, 1933 in Cleveland, he was the son of Fred and Blanche (Smith) Wallace. He had lived in the Mantua-Streetsboro area for 15 years.
Mr. Wallace was a maintenance worker. He retired from Collins, Rimer & Gordon architectural firm in Cleveland.
He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Streetsboro.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, to whom he was married 18 years; three sons; four daughters; four stepchildren; one sister; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One brother and one sister died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall in Streetsboro. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel.

Maxine Darrah
STOW - Maxene Dell Darrah, 87, of Kent Road, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Hospice Care Center in Copley.
Born May 15, 1911 in West Mansfield, she was the daughter of Richard P. and Gertrude (McCulloch) Moore. A Stow resident since 1969, she was a graduate of Kent State High School and Kent State University.
Mrs. Darrah and her husband, Russell, co-founded Mac Allied Tools Corporation (Matco) in September 1946.
She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Thenus and Twin Lakes Country Club. She was a friend and benefactor to Akron City Hospital, Rockynol, Akron Zoological Park, Hospice Care Center and other organizations benefiting children and the elderly.
Survivors include her nieces, Vivian (William) Fellows of Mentor; Helen (Richard) Thomas of Glencoe, Ill. and Elizabeth Gombert of Cuyahoga Falls. Her husband, Russell D., died March 17, 1969. Her brother, Frank Moore, and sister, Margaret Miller, died previously.
Visitation will will be held from 1 p.m. until services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent, with the Rev. Donald Engle officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Drive, Akron, 44333.

Melva Bowen
GARRETTSVILLE - Melva M. Bowen, 87, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a brief illness.
Born March 29, 1911, in Lafayette, she was the daughter of Melvin and Bessie (Sheldon) Halliwill. She had lived in Garrettsville since 1941.
Mrs. Bowen was a homemaker. She worked for several years in the office of Baxter Fuel Co.
She was a member of Garrettsville United Methodist Church, where she served as financial secretary and taught Sunday School in the 1950's. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, Paul, whom she married Feb. 8, 1930; sons, Dr. Richard R. of Grand Island, Neb., and Thomas K. of Westerville; daughters, Phyllis Ann Bailey of Lordstown, Jean E. Poole of Seattle, Wash., and Barbara E. Wilkie of Akron; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene of Wellington; and sister, Jeanette Lancial of Berkley, Mich. Her sisters, Miriam Lute and Dorothy Steffee, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 5:30 p.m., and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Garrettsville.

Donald Smith
HIRAM - Donald C. Smith, 61, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after an apparent heart attack.
Born Feb. 22, 1937 in The Congo, Africa, he was the son of Everton and Elizabeth (Baker) Smith. He was a life resident of Hiram.
Mr. Smith was a warehouse worker at Warren Tool Group in Garrettsville from 1982 until he retired in 1995.
Active in the Hiram area for most of his life, was a member of Hiram Christian Church and served as scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop No. 61 of the church for more than 12 years. He also was a former Little League baseball coach. He was a member of the Hiram Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.
He was a trustee and treasurer of the Ohio Museum of Transportation, a historical society of mass transit including buses and trolleys.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Krueger); sons, Richard (Kim) of Kent, Donald W. (Jennifer) of DeSoto, Iowa, and David (Brenda) of Hiram; daughters, Sherrie Iannaggi of Hiram, Diane (Alan) Fox of Solon and Rebecca Smith of Hiram; 21 grandchildren; brothers, Bryce of Holden, Maine, and Lyle of Naperville, Ill.; and sister, Shirley Vance of Filer, Idaho.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Robert Bowen officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Hiram.
Memorials may be made to the Ohio Museum of Transportation, P.O. Box 771230, Lakewood, Ohio 44107-0051 or to the Hiram Christian Church.

Harry Miner
Harry L. Miner, 78, of Ravenna died Sunday, June 28, 1998 at Robinson Memorial Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Walter Rorar
ELLET - Walter Anthony Rorar, infant son of Michael and Jennifer (Sethman) Rorar, died Friday, June 26, 1998.
Survivors include grandparents, Walter and Marion Rorar of Ellet, and Donna Russell of Kent; great-grandparents Alice Peterhanson and John Gultier; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road in Akron. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Cemetery, 100 E. Waterloo Road in Akron, with the Rev. Pete Colletti officiating.

Alice Prisby
Alice Prisby, 97, of Ravenna, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren after a short illness.
Born Oct. 20, 1900 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Oliver and Isabelle (Proctor) Fullum. She was a life resident of Ravenna.
Mrs. Prisby was a homemaker. She enjoyed singing and collecting family history.
Survivors include her sons, Warren E. of Ravenna and Richard D. of Warren; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. Her husband, Wiley, died in 1969. Her sons, Eugene, Alvin and John; daughter, Geraldine; grandchildren, Tina and Chris; brothers, Delbert, Ernest, Winford, Orin, Harold, Floyd and Herman Fullum; and sisters, Mable Mason and Jessie Clemens, died previously.
Visitation will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. John Brown officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

Helen Layne
WINDHAM - Helen D. Layne, 82, died Friday, June 26, 1998 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren after a brief illness.
Born June 9, 1916 in Caldwell, Ohio, she was the daughter of Andrew and Ann Dremack.
Mrs. Layne was a homemaker and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 674 of Windham.
She is survived by her son, Larry Fogle of Newton Falls; daughter, Judy Russell of Garrettsville; a grandson; and sister, Ann Kular of Akron. Her husband, Roy E. Layne, whom she married in 1967, died June 27, 1993.
Calling hours will be held Monday one hour before the noon service at the Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville with the Rev. Matt Darrin officiating. Burial will be in Windham Township Cemetery.

Jackie Loudin
ATWATER - Jackie Loudin, 67, who volunteered in a number of Atwater community organizations, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, following a three and a half year battle with ovarian cancer.
Born Jan. 28, 1931, she was a longtime Atwater resident.
Mrs. Loudin was a member of Atwater United Methodist Church and also was involved in community service efforts through the Salvation Army, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Lions Club, Community Emergency Food Cupboard, Change Hunger County Food Coalition and T.O.P.S. She also was active in Waterloo school and athletic organizations and Atwater community government activities.
She was an ardent believer in the need for a better environment and worked with her husband, Kyle, to promote responsible use of land and resources.
Mrs. Loudin's interest in helping find a cure for cancer prompted her to donate her body to the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine for medical research.
Survivors include her husband, Kyle, to whom she was married for more than 50 years; son, Michael (Sheila); daughters, Patricia Loudin (John Thomas), Kylia (Michael) Jones and Pamela White; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; mother, Vivian Martz; sister, Sandy (Arvil) Conley; and sister-in-law, Gloria (Orville) Hillyer.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 25 at Atwater United Methodist Church.

Henry Sarrocco
Ravenna native Henry R. Sarrocco, 84, of Summerville, S.C., died Friday, June 26, 1998 at a hospital in South Carolina.
Born March 2, 1914 in Ravenna, he was a son of Frank and Dina (DiCola) Sarrocco.
Mr. Sarrocco graduated from Ohio schools and was a retired driver for the A.C. Williams Co.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was an interpreter for the Italian prisoners. He was an honorary member of the Summerville Fire Department, a member of the Eagles, a member of the Italian American Society, and the first "Wall of Honor" recipient at Northfield Harness Race Track. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Summerville and a former member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Morgan) of Summerville; son William F. of Moorpark, Calif.; daughter Dine S. Turocy of Summerville; four grandchildren; and sister Jeanne Brooks of North Canton.
Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the James A. Dyal Funeral Home in Summerville. Services will be held 9 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial will be in White Church Cemetery in South Carolina.
Memorials may be made to the St. John's Catholic Church organ fund.
