Howard Shearer Jr.
Howard E. Shearer Jr., 83, of Salem, a former Kent resident, died Sunday at Alliance Community Hospital after a long illness.
Born June 15, 1914 in Clearfield, Pa., he was the son of Howard Sr. and Margaret (Metzler) Shearer. He came to Salem from Kent in 1946.
Mr. Shearer was superintendent of Grandview Cemetery in Salem for 20 years until he retired in 1979. He also was a service manager at Parker Chevrolet in Salem.
He was a 50-year member of Salem City Masonic Lodge No. 698, serving as past master and past secretary; past high priest of Salem Chapter No. 94; past illustrious master of Omega Council No. 44; past commander of the Salem Commandry No. 42; and a member of the Ohio Grand Council Order of High Priesthood; The Order of the Silver Trowel; 32nd Degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Youngstown; Shannon Council No. 28 Knight Masons of Akron; Killarney Council No. 76; Knights Masons of Salem; Ohio Priory No. 18; Knights of the York Cross of Honor; Salem Chapter No. 334 Order of the Eastern Star; and an honorary member of Perry Masonic Lodge No. 185.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem.
Survivors include his wife, Miriam (Miller), whom he married Nov. 30, 1935; sons, Howard E. III of Delaware, Ohio, and James of Dayton, Nevada; daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Suzanne) Smith of Salem; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Margaret Minter of Gettysburg, Pa. A brother, a sister and a great-grandson died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Arbaugh Pearce Greenisen Funeral Home, 1617 E. State St., Salem, where a Masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in Salem.

Emma Snyder
Emma L. Snyder, 95, of 2869 Canal St., Newton Falls, died Saturday at Ridgecrest Care Center in Warren.
Born Aug. 18, 1902 in Spencerville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Stewart D. and Elizabeth J. (Masters) Roberts. She had lived in Newton Falls since 1928.
Mrs. Snyder was a member of First Christian Church of Newton Falls, where she was a member of the choir for more than 40 years. She was was a former member of Newton Falls Garden Club and the Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include her son, Harold R. of Newton Falls; daughter, Mrs. Robert (Shirley Jean) Frantz of Dunwoody, Ga.; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. Her husband, Harold H., died in 1992. Two brothers and two sisters died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church of Newton Falls. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery.
Basil Wilson
BRIMFIELD - Basil E. Wilson, 67, died Friday.
Born Sept. 21, 1930 in St. Mary's, W.Va., he moved to the area in 1973.
Mr. Wilson retired as a maintenance worker at McIntire Chevrolet in Akron in 1993 after 20 years of service.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea.
Survivors include his sisters, Maxine McIntyre of Brimfield and Barbara Abrams of Redlands, Calif.; and brother, Hugh of Lakeland, Fla. His brothers, Jack and Donald, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hennessy-Bagnoli Funeral Home in Tallmadge, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Paul Staat officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Brimfield.
Lillian Peachock
Lillian Peachock, 84, of Youngstown, the mother of Phillip Peachock of Kent, died Jan. 26 in her home.
Mrs. Peachock was a homemaker.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Youngstown, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Holy Name Guild and the Third Order of St. Francis.
In addition to her son in Kent, survivors include her sons, Frank and Thaddeus, both of Youngstown; daughters, Delores, Mary Ann Chacon, Florence Tirabassi and Ann Siciliano, all of the Youngstown area; 26 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Phillip, died July 9, 1961.
Services were held Jan. 28. Arrangements were handled by Rossi Brothers Funeral Home in Youngstown.
Norman Phillips
STREETSBORO - Norman D. Phillips, 70, died Sunday at Wade Park Veterans Administration Hospital in Cleveland.
Born Feb. 26, 1927 in Cleveland, he was the son of Louis N. and Mary Margaret (Davis) Phillips. He had been a Streetsboro resident for most of his life.
Mr. Phillips was a retired crane operator for Operating Engineers Local No. 18 in Cleveland.
He was a member of Streetsboro Veterans of Foreign Wars, Streetsboro American Legion and the Streetsboro Eagles. He also was member of Lionheart Masonic Lodge No. 673 in Cleveland.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his sons, Michael P. and Anthony, both of Streetsboro; daughter, Sheri of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren; and brother, Charles of Euclid. His brother, Eugene., died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Streetsboro. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.
Michael Quimby
Michael B. Quimby, 33, of Elizabeth Drive, Warren, died Sunday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Lordstown.
Born Sept. 29, 1964 in Warren, he was the son of Joseph R. and Irene (Eckenrode) Quimby.
Mr. Quimby was an operator for Taylor Steel Inc. in Lordstown.
He was inducted into the Lordstown Fire Department April 18, 1988. He held previous captain and lieutenant positions on the department, and on June 19, 1995, he became the assistant fire chief. He held a basic EMT card. He was an inspector for Lordstown Village and held the position of fire investigator. He also was the fire department's engineer and a member of the water rescue team.
In addition to his parents of Lordstown, survivors include his brothers, Joseph of Lake Mountain, Ohio, and Jason and Mark, both of Lordstown.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Lordstown Cemetery.
Peter Augusta
Peter Augusta, 75, of Park Avenue, Newton Falls, died Monday at his home.
Born June 28, 1924 in Penowa, Pa., he was the son of Michael and Esther Augusta.
Mr. Augusta retired from Thomas Steel Inc. in Lordstown, where he was a carpenter.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls. He was a past grand knight and fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 3350.
He served two terms on Newton Falls City Council and was a volunteer fireman.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his sons, David and Pete, both of Newton Falls, and Dennis of Lordstown; and six grandchildren. His wife, Helen Rita (Dugic), whom he married in 1946, died in 1988. Five brothers and two sisters also died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Newton Falls.

Vera Weber
BRIMFIELD - Vera C. Weber, 96, a Brimfield resident for 69 years, died Monday at Akron City Hospital.
Mrs. Weber worked at McCrory's in Kent.
She was a member of Tallmadge Alliance Church and cared for many of her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, Rodney of Payson, Ariz.; daughters, Mrs. George (Betty) Bailey of Parma, and Mrs. Jim (Sandra) Meloy of Phoenix, Ariz.; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two-great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 14 at Tallmadge Alliance Church.

Betty Ferrara
Betty Claire Ferrara, 77, of Tallmadge, died Monday at Akron City Hospital.
Born April 21, 1920, in Ashland, she was the daughter of Sam and Margaret (Hettinger) Fink.
Mrs. Ferrara was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Tallmadge.
Survivors include her husband, Siv, to whom she was married for 57 years; daughters, Mrs. Bob (Kay Lynn) Tafini of Munroe Falls, Sylvia Lee Ferrara of Diamond Back, Calif., and Mrs. Joe (Marty) Staud of Roswell, Ga.; ; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Joe Fink of Sterling, Ill.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Tallmadge, with the Rev. John Hengle officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent is handling arrangements.

John L. Jones
John L. Jones, 54, of Ravenna, died Saturday at Robinson Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Nov. 11, 1943, in Fayetteville, W.Va., the son of Charles and Cloia (Woolwine) Jones.
Mr. Jones had worked as a press operator for the Teledyne-Monarch Company in Hartville.
He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ravenna.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Sue (Wolford); mother Cloia Jones of Sprague, W.Va.; brothers Charles of Rootstown and Calvin of Oakhill, W.Va.; sisters Cordelia Oberholtzer of Kent, Frances Martin of Ravenna and Gloria Bostick of Sprague, W.Va. His father and sister Loretta Ross died previously.

Anna Mae King
Anna Mae King, 89, formerly of North Mantua Street in Kent, died Saturday at Kent Quality Care Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 6, 1908, in New Brighton, Pa., the daughter of Nicholas and Eliza (Morrison) Lane. She was a member of the Kent Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include her twin sister, Mary E. Lane of Beaver Falls, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Harold King; brothers Forest, Raymond, Edward, Howard, Dale, Almond and James Lane; and sisters Lois Lane and Myrtle Reiter died previously.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kent Church of the Nazarene, the Rev. James Trippett officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Helen Gates
Helen Gates, 87, of Ravenna, died Saturday at Altercare of Ravenna.
She was born June 10, 1910, in Danville, Ill., the daughter of Albert and Henrietta (Matrisch) Fischer. A former Akron resident, she had lived in Ravenna since 1995.
Mrs. Gates was a homemaker.
Survivors include her stepdaughter, Sharon Stewart of Cuyahoga Falls; brothers Fred Fischer of New York and Herman Fischer of Ravenna; sisters Louise Marks of Ravenna and Dorothy Barry of New York. Her husband, Ray, died previously.
Calling hours will be held 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. A private service will be held. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

Ralph Shrewsbury
Ralph V. Shrewsbury, 70, of Ravenna died Monday.

Anna Freiberg
MANTUA - Anna S. Freiberg, 83, died Monday at Briarfield in Cortland.

Jane Pauli
Jane Pauli, 48, a Ravenna native, died Jan. 24 in Wheatland, Wyo., after a brief illness.
Born August 5, 1949, she was the daughter of Robert and Ruby Lower. She had lived in Wyoming for18 years after moving from Brimfield.
Survivors include her husband, Sam; son, John Kaczynski of Euclid; daughter, Mrs. Shawn (Michelle) Owens of Akron; one grandchild; mother, Ruby Lower of Kent; and sisters, Mrs. John (Janet) Ruggieri of Kent and Mrs. Todd (Joanne) Strickler of Minnesota. Her father and sister, Mrs. Gene (Judy) Nickerson, died previously.
Services will be held Thursday at Platte Funeral Home in Wheatland, Wyo.
Marie Kline
A memorial service will be held Thursday for Marie A. Kline, 97, of South DePeyster Street, Kent, who died Jan. 9 at Altercare of Ravenna.
Born March 24, 1900 in Brimfield, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (May) Kline.
Miss Kline retired from Ametek-Lamb Electric after 33 years of service. She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent.
Survivors include 17 nieces and nephews. Her brothers, Roy and John, and sisters, Bessie Knapp and Esther Bauer, died previously.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Church in Kent. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna. Arrangements were handled by Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent.

Dennis Goff
Dennis S. Goff, 42, of Ravenna, died suddenly Sunday.
Born April 23, 1955 in Ravenna, he was the son of Clifford and Helen (Capisita) Goff.
Mr. Goff worked in maintenance and security at the Hattie Larlham Foundation in Shalersville for 12 1/2 years. He also delivered the rural route of the Record-Courier in Mantua.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Davis) to whom he was married for 22 years; son, Dennis (Sheila) of Ravenna; daughter, Mrs. Jason (Amy) Miller of Ravenna; two grandchildren; mother, Helen of Freedom; brothers, Clifford and Jeff, both of Freedom; and sisters, Diane Shaffer of Freedom, Linda Brown of Windham and Sandy Mauer of Freedom.

Larry Beatty Jr.
Larry "Dave" Beatty Jr., 37, of Parkman, died Sunday at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a sudden illness.
Born July 31, 1961 in Ravenna, he was the son of Larry D. and Martha (Keaner) Beatty. Formerly of Garrettsville, he had lived in Parkman for the past year.
Mr. Beatty worked as a machine operator for Harder Construction Co. in Chardon and assisted his brother, Dan, in his ceramic tile installation business.
He was a member of The Church in Troy. He was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Bruno), whom he married June 24, 1989; daughters, Michelle and Ashley, both at home; parents Larry D. and Martha Beatty of West Palm Beach, Fla.; brothers, Dan of Garrettsville and Jimmie of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and sister, Pam Beatty of Niles.
