Former Mantua resident Florence (Dolly) Marth (nee Kerrigan), 71, of Winter Haven, Fla., died May 8, 2001.
She was the daughter of Edward and Florence (Lesmer) Kerrigan.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; sons, Peter, Thomas, James and Joseph; and one granddaughter. Sisters, Dorothy, Grace, Eileen and Margie, died previously.
A memorial mass will be held at 6 p.m. July 12 at St. Ignatius Church, 10205 Lorain Ave., Cleveland.
Memorials may be made to the building renovation fund at St. Ignatius Church.
Daniel C. Ash Sr., 57
GARRETTSVILLE - Memorial services for Daniel C. "Hillbilly" Ash Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. July 14 at Freedom Congregational Church on S.R. 88 with Pastor John Ryan officiating.
Mr. Ash died Thursday, June 28, 2001, in West Union, W.Va.
Born Jan. 21, 1944, in Ashley, Doddridge County, W.Va., he was the son of Claude and Audra (Underwood) Ash.
Mr. Ash was a retired construction worker.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of the Windham Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Garrettsville. He was an avid hunter and gun collector.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella Ann (Hinzman) of Garrettsville; sons, James Travis and Arnold J., both of Garrettsville and Daniel C. Jr. (Karen) of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; daughters, Tavia Marlene Ash of Garrettsville, Audra Burdick of Leavittsburg and Tammy (Tommy) Morris of Graceville, Fla.; sister, Betsy June (Bernard) Virtue of Dover; and brother, Samuel G. (Suzie) Ash of Nevada. His parents and a brother, Randall Ash, died previously.
Burial was held Monday in Ashley Underwood Cemetery.
John G. Spinks, 69
John G. "Big John" Spinks, 69, of Akron, died Friday, July 6, 2001, after a long illness.
Born in Webster Springs, W. Va., he was the son of John and Maggie Spinks. He had lived in the Akron area for 48 years.
Mr. Spinks was the plant engineer for Eclat/RCA Rubber Co. for 43 years, retiring Feb. 22, 1995.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he earned the Purple Heart.
He was a member of Mount Akra Masonic Lodge No. 680.
He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter.
Survivors include his wife, Jane, to whom he was married 50 years; sons, Steven G. (Joyce) and Johnny W., both of Akron; daughters, Taryn Sue Spinks and Deborah D. "Pete" Silvers, both of Akron; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Hanna and Esther O'Dell, both of West Va.; and friend, Michael Strawser.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 11 a.m. ujntil services at noon Tuesday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Akron, with the Rev. Henry Sedlacek officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park in Akron.
Eleanor C. Reed, 85
SHALERSVILLE - Eleanor C. Reed, 85, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna.
Born July 6, 1915, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Adolph and Marie (Petershefsky) Koula. She had lived in Lake County before moving to Shalersville 11 years ago.
Mrs. Reed was a surgical assistant at Euclid General Hospital.
She was a member of Willoughby United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star in Mayfield Heights.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Marie (Bruce) Smith of Shalersville; three grandchildren; brother, Albert Koula of California; and sisters, Mildred Reynolds of Fairview Park and Elsie Mirtallo of California. Her husband, Leslie G., died in 1982.
There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 27 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, with the Rev. Vernon White officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.
Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church in Ravenna.
Ann G. Watkins, 80
Ann G. Watkins, 80, of Kent, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Essex Healthcare of Tallmadge.
Born Aug. 5, 1920, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary (Haas) Vogel.
Mrs. Watkins was a secretary, clerk and teaching assistant for the Kent City Schools. She previously worked at Lamb Electric Co. in Kent.
Survivors include her husband, George, to whom she was married 52 years; son, Dave of Kent; daughter, Diane (Ken) Riffle of Uniontown; two grandchildren; and sister, Patricia Waldeck of Kent. One brother and three sisters died previously.
Private services will be held Monday. Arrangements are being handled by Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent.

Ronald K. Cox, 29
SHALERSVILLE - Ronald K. Cox, 29, died Thursday July 5, 2001.
Born September 25, 1971 in Ravenna, he was the son of George and Anna (Frayer) Cox.
Survivors include his mother Anna, of Shalersville; twin brother, Robert of Mantua; brothers, James (Stephanie) of Hiram and Daniel of Ravenna; sister, Anne (Pete) Dunlap of Shalersville; grandmother Elizabeth Frayer of Shalersville. His father, George, died in 1984.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. services Monday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Beck officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.
Charlotte V. Kukla, 69
Charlotte V. Kukla, 69, of West Farmington, the mother of Edward Kukla of Windham, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at her home.
Born May 23, 1932, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Hans and Gertrude (Chesboro) Bartz. She lived in the area for seven years.
Mrs. Kukla was a homemaker.
In addition to her son, survivors include her daughters, Lorry (Richard) Satterlee of W. Farmington and Lynn (David) Ihrig of Southington; stepson,John Krevas of Englewood, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. until services at 1 p.m. today at Russell Funeral Service, 275 E. Main St., West Farmington, with the Rev. Harry Winca officiating. Cremation will take place.
Donald W. Shayler
CHARLESTOWN Donald W. Shayler, 81, a World War II veteran who was present during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and was also present when the Japanese signed the peace treaty, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at his home.
Born Aug. 1, 1919, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of Arthur and Olga (Borg) Shayler. He had lived in Charlestown for more than 50 years.
Mr. Shayler was employed with the Ohio Department of Transportation, Division 4, in Ravenna until he retired. He worked in building maintenance.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the armed forces throughout the entire war.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth A. (Delin); son, Bill (Sharon) Shayler of Charlestown; daughter Linda (Joe) Beutler of Charlestown; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Raymond, died previously.
Private services were held for the family Thursday. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery. Wood-Kortright Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel handled arrangements.
Frances G. Hasman
Frances G. Hashman, 87, of Ravenna died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at her home.
Born Aug. 13, 1913, in Scott County, Ind., she was the daughter of James and Rebecca (Barriger) Jenkins. She had lived in Ravenna since 1953.
Mrs. Hashman was retired from her job at Nylon Mold in Garrettsville where she was a press operator.
Survivors include her son, James Glidewell of Cypress, Texas; granddaughters, Robin Cain of Edinburg and Tami Baldridge of Windham; and four great-grandchildren. Her sister, Linda Greene, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Bruce Chouinard officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.
Sue K. Brueggeman
STOW - Sue K. (Sadye) Brueggeman, 87, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001.
Born in Barberton, she was the daughter of Kosta and Anna Dulian. She reared her family in Akron. She also lived in Lake Park, Fla., in later years.
She was a Life Master bridge player and had volunteered at Akron General Medical Center for many years.
Survivors include her daughters, Sue (James) Usner of Kent, Ann (Gene) Fiocca of Akron and Joyce (Jack) Jaqua of Prosperity, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Husband, Elmer C., grandson, Jon Usner, and sister, Lynn Snyder, died previously.
Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church of Kent, followed by services at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Kent Pierce and the Rev. Eugene Brueggemann officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Redmon Funeral Home in Stow.

Jack Richard Bounds
Former Kent resident Jack Richard Bounds, 69, of Corry, Pa., died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Corry Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 30, 1931, in Kent, he was the son of William and Gladys (Meloy) Bounds. He was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent.
Mr. Bounds first was employed by Miller Excavating in Kent and then as a fireman for the Erie Railroad. From 1960 through 1965, he worked in the Civil Service in California. He moved back to Ohio in 1966 and moved to Corry in 1975, continuing his work in the Civil Service as an inspector. He retired in 1990.
Heserved in the U.S. Marines from 1951 through 1955, including two tours of duty on the front lines during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine, whom he married March 5, 1957; sons, Kirk (Leigh) of Tracy, Calif., Kelly of Corry and Kent (Virginia) of Hillsboro, Ore.; daughters-in-law, Joni Bundas of Corry and Tina Bounds of Suisun, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A son, Kevin, and brother, Ralph, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday.

Charlotte V. Kukla, 69, of West Farmington, the mother of Edward Kukla of Windham, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at her home.

George W. Snyder
George W. Snyder, 79, of Mineral Ridge died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in an auto accident.
Born July 23, 1921, in Alliance, he was the son of Charles and Maraca (Cope) Snyder.
Mr. Snyder was a supervisor for Ohio Edison for 35 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Merrimac in the Pacific Fleet.
He was a 1939 Alliance High School graduate. He an avid auto racing fan and he loved to travel and read.
Survivors include daughters Linda Tripodi-Sandoval of Las Vegas, Nev. and Barbara Snyder of Ravenna; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and his fiancee Jessie Brotherton of Mineral Ridge. His wife, Sally M. (Walters) whom he married Feb. 16, 1946, died Jan. 7, 1999. A brother William Snyder also died previously.

Ben Chaykowski, 88
MANTUA - Ben Chaykowski, 88, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at his home after a long illness.
Born Dec. 7, 1912, in Cleveland, he was the son of Stanley and Frances (Siorek) Chaykowski. He was a Mantua resident for 50 years.
Mr. Chaykowski was a tool and die maker at Efficient Tool and Dye in Independence until he retired in 1978. For many years, he also farmed in the Mantua area.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua and the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed bowling, hunting and the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Marie (Fiala), whom he married July 24, 1937; sons, Bernard (Jacquelyn) of Mantua; Robert of Aurora and Chris (Denise) of Mantua; daughter, Lois Ann (Robert) Pfeiffer of Medina; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Stella Earlywine of Naples, Fla. and Virginia Cowan of Cleveland. His brother, Michael; and sister, Jennie, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where prayer services will be at 9:15 a.m. Friday. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua, with the Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.

Daniel Andrika, 81
Daniel Andrika, 81, of Newton Falls, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Laurie Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls.
Born Sept. 8, 1919, in Woodlawn, Pa., he was the son of Tom and Marie (Vercerria) Andrika. A life resident of Newton Falls, he was a 1938 graduate of Newton Falls High School.
Mr. Andrika was employed as a millwright at Rockwell International for 27 years.
A U.S. Army of World War II, he served in Northern France, Rhineland, Germany and Central Europe. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 236.
He was a member of Newton Falls United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, bicycling and bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl (Mulac), whom he married Oct. 25, 1940; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His daughter, Sandra E. Keefner; and brother, John, died previously.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls, where services will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery.
William Merrill Gressard
William Merrill Gressard, 85, who was known throughout Ohio as an avid outdoorsman and conservationist, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at his home on Ravenna Road in Franklin Township.
Mr. Gressard shared his experiences with Record-Courier readers for about 30 years as outdoor editor and "Rod and Gun" columnist, starting in the mid-1960s.
Born July 30, 1915 in Kent, he was the son of Charles F. and Margaret M. (Merrill) Gressard. He was a descendant of the Haymakers, the first settlers in Kent.
Mr. Gressard loved the outdoors. He raised stock fish at Trail Lake fish and game management area in the two lakes on his 180-acre Franklin Township farm, which he had operated since 1950. He made and sold special fish bait, provided local restaurants with filleted bluegills and raised Christmas trees.
"He was really dedicated to the outdoors an real knowledgeable about the outdoors, particularly fishing," said R-C Editor Emeritus Loris Troyer, who met Gressard while the two were students at Kent State University. "He was just an all-around outdoorsman."
He received numerous honors for his work in the field of natural resources, including being named Ohio "Wildlife Conservationist of the Year" in 1967. Several years before, he had conducted a one-man campaign to stop pollution of the Cuyahoga River by the city of Akron. He won the fight when corrective sludge basins were constructed at Lake Rockwell.
In 1972, he was named to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Recreation and Resources Commission, a position to which he was reappointed in 1974 and 1979. He served as chairman of the commission. He was honored by ODNR for his conservation efforts in 1982.
A man of many interests, he also bred and sold basset hounds, and constructed and operated the Tower Short Course, a par three golf course on S.R. 59 between Kent and Ravenna.
An outstanding golfer, he was a 15-time golf champion at Twin Lakes Country Club between 1937 and 1975 and won the Portage County amateur golf title numerous times. He and three other men won the Ohio Conference Golf Championship with the Kent State University golf team during his college years.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in Torpedo Squadron 29 aboard the aircraft carrier, Cabot. He was awarded a Fleet Admiral's Commendation, a Purple Heart, a Presidential Citation, and Pacific and Philippine ribbons with four battle stars.
He was a member of United Church of Christ of Kent, Twin Lakes Country Club, the Outdoor Writers Association and Ducks Unlimited. He was a past president of the Outdoor Writers of Ohio.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret (Fageol); sons, William (Cheri), Robert and Richard, all of Kent; daughter, Gwen of Kent; and brothers, C. Frederick (Betty) Gressard of Kent and John P. (Esther) Gressard of Santa Ana, California. His daughter, Merrilyn, died in 1944.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ of Kent, with the Rev. Roger Knight officiating.
