Stanley N. Garfinkel
Stanley N. Garfinkel of Cleveland, who concluded more than 30 years of service on the Kent State University faculty as an adjunct professor at the Shannon Rogers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising, died Monday at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
A noted historian who had written and produced texts and documentaries on subjects from architecture to Native Americans, Mr. Garfinkel's work as producer and writer of the fashion documentary, "Completely Dior," propelled him into the fashion spotlight, where he remained for more than a decade.
His Dior video, based largely on oral histories with people who knew Dior well, included interviews with Stanley Marcus of Neiman-Marcus and actress Olivia DeHavilland, who reminisced about the days she went to Dior's fashion house in Paris to buy her dresses.
He retired from KSU last year after more than 30 years of service. He started at KSU's Geauga Campus in 1963 as an associate professor of history. He served as an adjunct professor on the Kent campus for six years.
He received an Emmy nomination for his "Shannon Rogers for Jerry Silverman" video that continues to be used at KSU to document for students the role of the school's namesakes and benefactors.
"Stanley's life is the legacy and the memories he created that will linger for generations to come," said Elizabeth Rhodes, director of the Shannon Rogers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising.
"Not only was he a wonderful, full human being, but he made a significant impact on fashion history because of the value he placed on integrity in his scholarly pursuit of excellence...Because Stanley always searched for the truth with an uncompromising pursuit of quality, he leaves a unique legacy of scholarship to Kent and to the world."
His archives, after the publication of his book on Dior by the KSU Press, are expected to be available for study at KSU's June F. Mohler Fashion Library.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Temple Emanu El in University Heights.
