William McCandless
STOW - Services will be held Thursday for William "Bill" R. (Sylvester) McCandless, 74, of Crestdale Drive, who died Sunday at Akron City Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1922 in Butler, Pa., he was reared in Brady Lake.
Mr. McCandless worked for a total of 44 years at Lamson & Sessions Co., Zimmer Manufacturing and RB&W Corp. He was a machinist by trade and plant superintendent with Lamson and Sessions Co.. He also was the plant manager at Zimmer Manufacturing in Michigan, and R&D Tool Designer with RB&W Corp.
Prior to his civilian work, he worked in munitions with the 397th Bomb Squadron in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. McCandless was a member of the Kent Elks and Holy Family Church of Stow. He also was an avid bowler in Stow Sunshiners League.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred E. (Hall), to whom he was married 54 years; sons, William (Lynn) Jr. of Kent, Michael E. of Akron, and Andrew J. of Tallmadge; daughters, Mrs. Terry (Marcella) Griffin Sr. of Munroe Falls, and Theresa of Rootstown; and four grandchildren. His stepfather, Andrew Sylvester, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Church in Stow, with the Rev. Edward Szabo officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
Gary Kelley
Services will be held today for former Kent resident Gary Lynn Kelley, 57, of Hazleton, Pa., who died Sunday at his home.
Born Sept. 13, 1940 in Burdine, Ky., he was the son of Thomas and Gertrude (Crabtree) Kelley. He had lived in Kent for 35 years until moving to Auburndale, Fla. in 1973. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1996.
Mr. Kelley was a self-employed sheet metal fabricator.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Linda (Hunt); son, Gary L. II of Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Kristina Penney of Brandon, Fla., Laura Dunlevy of Lakeland, Fla. and Colleen Griffin of Dawsonville, Ga.; five grandchildren; and brother, Harold Lane of Winter Haven, Fla. His sister, Barbara Williams, and brothers, Muncie and Dallas "Dean," died previously.
Calling hours will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. today at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
Florence Shafer
Florence H. Shafer, 105, formerly of Morrison Avenue in Newton Falls, died Monday at Laurie-Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls.
Born Feb. 27, 1892, in Elmore, Ohio, she was a 1909 graduate of Woodville High School. She attended Ohio Northern University and Kent State University.
She moved to Trumbull County in 1920 and was a teacher for Warren city schools and Warren Township schools for about 60 years.
She was an 84-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Emmanual Lutheran Church in Warren.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading.
Survivors include her son, Burton C. of Kinsman; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, Lelander D., died in 1926. Her sons, Franklin and Norman Lee; brothers, Burt Houtmer and Harmon Houtmer; and sisters, Myra Hudson and Al Purkey, died previously.
Visitation will be held from10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Borowski and Sons Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.
Sandy Mae Brown
Sandy Mae Brown, 57, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Stow and Kent, died Saturday.
Born Aug. 3, 1940 in Brimfield, she was the daughter of Rudolph and Bessie (Michael) Cable. She had lived in Colorado Springs since 1990.
Mrs. Brown was employed as community resource liaison for HeadStart of Colorado Springs.
She was a former member of The Chapel in Akron.
Survivors include her son, Jim, to whom she was married for 35 years; daughters, Lisa (Scott) Stephens of Akron and Heather (Doug) Smith of Lake Worth, Fla.; two grandchildren; father, Rudolph Cable of Kent; brother, Michael (Donna) Cable of Hudson; and sister, Zama (Bob) Kauffman of Astor, Fla.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Redmon Funeral Home in Stow, where the Rev. Knute Larson and the Rev. Bud Maynard will officiate at services at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Gerald Thrasher Sr.
A graveside service will be held Saturday for Gerald R. Thrasher Sr., 79, of Henderson, N.C., who died Sept. 4 after a long illness.
Born Dec. 24, 1917 in Cleveland, he was the son of Jacob S. and Nellie P. (Hsmer) Thrasher. He was a former Parkman resident.
Mr. Thrasher was employed in insurance management for more than 40 years.
He attended Middleburg Baptist Church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Trenchard) of Anderson, N.C.; son, Gerald R. Jr. of Silver Spring, Md.; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Overlook Cemetery in Parkman, with the Rev. Gerald Sanders officiating. Local arrangements were made by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville.
Gary Kelley
Former Kent resident Gary Lynn Kelley, 57, of Hazleton, Pa. died Sunday at his home.

Frank Bennett
STOW - Frank F. Bennett, 65, died Monday after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 31, 1931 in Akron, he was the son of Theophlious E. and Myrtle M. (Winkelman) Bennett.
Mr. Bennett retired from Ford Motor Co., Walton Hills Stamping Plant in 1977 after 10 years of service.
He also served in the U.S. Army in the 1950s in South Korea and Panama.
Survivors include his son, Frank A.; foster daughter, Deana; six grandchildren; and brothers Wilson of Akron and Clinton (Bertha) of Stow. His sister, Emma Fulton, and brother, Robert, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Terry Lodico officiating. Burial will be in Homeland Cemetery in Rootstown.

Sadie M. Drotar
ROOTSTOWN - Sadie M. Drotar, 81, died Sunday.
She was born July 2, 1916 in Deerfield.
Mrs. Drotar was a homemaker. She had volunteered for the American Red Cross.
Survivors include her sons, Paul (Theresa) of Rootstown and Bill (Trina) of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Mrs. Dale (Alice) Green of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband, Paul, died in 1980.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.
Anthony Mangeri
GARRETTSVILLE - Anthony F. Mangeri, 77, died Saturday in Geauga Regional Hospital in Chardon.
Born April 4, 1920 in Cleveland, he was the son of Luigi Maugeri and Jennie Ruvolo.
Mr. Mangeri was a business owner.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was injured in England during the war.
Survivors include his sons, Louis A. (Sharleen) and Anthony R. (Gail); daughter, Yolanda (Michael) Maschek of Hiram; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Louis Maugeri and Louis Ruvolo; and sister, Josephine Cimino. His wife, Helen J. (Mocarski), died three months ago. A sister, Yolanda Lazzaro, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Ferfolia Funeral Home, 356 W. Aurora Road (S.R. 82), Sagamore Hills, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Entombment will be in All Saints Mausoleum in Northfield.

Susan E. Earnest
ATWATER - Susan Eileen Earnest, 52, died Sunday at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring.
Born Dec. 2, 1944 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Glen Warren and Elva Geneva (Baylor) Earnest. She had lived in the area most of her life.
She was employed as a staff nurse at Alliance Community Hospital and later worked as the nursing supervisor for Family Medical Center in Alliance until she retired in 1992.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Randolph.
Survivors include her sons, Gregory W. of Chicago, Ill. and Aaron A. of Sebring; four grandchildren; father and step-mother, Glen and Janet Earnest of Atwater; grandmother, Isabelle Eberly of Atwater; sister, Bonnie Anderson of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; and stepsister, Sue Hill of Alliance. Her mother, Elva, died in 1973.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial servcie will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Randolph, with the Rev. Donald Feicht officiating. Burial will be in Atwater Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home in Alliance.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Church, Atwater United Methodist Church, the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Alliance Red Cross.
Agnes Neff
Agnes E. Neff, 93, formerly of West River Boulevard, Newton Falls, died Sunday at the Glenview Manor Nursing Home in Mineral Ridge.
Born Aug. 20, 1904 in Monaca, Pa., she was the daughter of William and Kathryn (Dorn) Eberhardt.
Mrs. Neff was a Lutheran. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.
Survivors include her brother, Kenneth of Youngstown; and sister, Wilhelmina Biss of Cleveland. Her husband, Emil, whom she married in 1931, died in 1978. Her brothers, Frank and William, and a sister, Marie Formichella, also died previously.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association.
William T. Frazier
William T. Frazier, 68, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center in Akron.
Born April 12, 1929 in Pulaski County, Va., he was the son of Walter and Sarah (Quesenberry) Frazier.
Mr. Frazier was retired from Education Equipment Corp.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; sons, William T. Jr. (Diana) of Ravenna and John P. (Toni) of Mantua; daughters, Deborah L. of Kent and Mrs. Mark (Ginny) Moore of Tallmadge; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother, Sarah of Max Meadows, Va.; and sister, Bonnie (Carson) Arnold of Max Meadows, Va.
Cremation has taken place. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Kent Masonic Temple, where a memorial service will take place at 5:30 p.m. Arrangements were made by the Cremation Society of Ohio.

Carmalee Browning
Former Kent resident Carmalee Browning, 60, of Bucyrus, died Friday at home.
Born March 4, 1937 in Durbin, W.Va., she was the daughter of Rex B. and Sylva A. (Ash) Kincaid. A 1955 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, she moved to Bucyrus in the late 1950s.
Mrs. Browning was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Michael of North Robinson, and Keith of Bucyrus; daughters, Sandra Lopez of Fremont, and Karen Blair of Pioneer; stepdaughter, Jean Jordan of Shelby; stepsons, Jack L. of Shelby, and Robert of Mansfield; nine grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth "Sonny" of Colorado; and sister, Betty "Nuet" Sutton of Colorado. Her husband, Jack E., whom she married in October 1959, died Oct. 11, 1996.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Gilbert Perdue officiating. Burial will be in Oceola Cemetery.
Harold Webb
HIRAM - Harold E. Webb, 77, died Friday at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a period of failing health.
Born April 15, 1920 in Ravenna, he was the son of Loyd W. and Hattie (Right) Webb. He lived in the Ravenna area until moving to Hiram in 1980.
Mr. Webb taught at the Kent State University School, College of Education, training and supervising student teachers. He retired in 1978 as an emeritus professor of education. After retiring, he was employed as an observer and evaluator of student teachers at KSU for several years.
He was a member of Unity Masonic Lodge No. 12 of Ravenna and was associated with the Portage County Board of Elections for many years. He was a member of the North East Ohio Education Association.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a graduate of Hiram College.
Survivors include his daughter, Michelle (Walter) Chenchik of Hiram; one grandchild; and sister, Mona Jean Bergold of West Salem, Ohio. His wife, Jean, died in 1990.
There will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will be held at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, with the Rev. Robert Bowen officiating. A private family burial will follow.
