Donna E. Hensel
Donna E. Hensel, 77, of 565 Swisher Mill Road, West Manchester, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born June 15, 1919, in East Claridon, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George and Grace (Burton) Armstrong, and had lived in Preble County since 1941. She was a member of the West Manchester United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin K. Hensel; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Karen Hensel of West Manchester; a grandson, Keith Hensel; two granddaughters, Karolyn Lee and Kathy Shelley; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Lowell Armstrong of Waterford, Mich.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 6, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Michael Chapel, West Manchester, with the Rev. Craig H. Smith officiating. Burial was in Wares Chapel Cemetery, West Manchester.
Elizabeth J. Arthur
Elizabeth Jane Arthur, 85, of 290 Prairie Ave., Wilmington, died Thursday morning, Jan. 2, 1997, at Clinton Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 15, 1911, at New Paris, she was the daughter of Clarence Patterson and Rena (Haverfield) Barr. She and her husband had lived at Lees Creek before moving to Wilmington, where they had lived for 25 years. She had attended Miami-Jacobs Business College, worked as a legal secretary in Dayton prior to her retirement, and was also a tutor-trainer for adult new readers.
Mrs. Arthur was a member of First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ, Wilmington; an active member of the Clinton County Quilting Association; and a former president of Church Women United.
Survivors include her husband, William E. Arthur, whom she married July 30, 1938; sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Arthur of Cincinnati, Roger and Leslie Arthur of Chadds Ford, Pa.; one sister, Eleanor Elliott of Kettering; grandchildren, Theodore Arthur of Washington, D.C., Thomas Arthur, Mary Jean Arthur, James Arthur, Christina Arthur and Andrew Arthur, all of Chadds Ford, Pa.; one great-grandchild, Owen Arthur; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Hilbert Barr; and a sister, Mildred Burton.
Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, Wilmington, is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Motko
Joseph Motko, 65, of Eaton, formerly of Tipp City, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
He was retired from Chrysler after 30 years of service, and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Gloria (Coppock) Motko; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and David Morrison of Georgia, and Carla and Ken Dearth of West Alexandria; five grandchildren, Ben and Katie Morrison, Kelly, Kendra and Casey Dearth; one sister, Margaret Reasor of Vandalia; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Virginia Motko of New Carlisle, Steve and Doris Motko of Beavercreek.
Mr. Motko was preceded in death by his parents, Johann and Rose Motko; and three sisters, Elizabeth Boyse, Mary Miller and Rose La Chance.
Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Larry Tyner officiating. Burial was in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Gilbert-Fellers Funeral Home, Brookville, was in charge of arrangements.

Corliss R. Cooper
Corliss R. Cooper, 70, of Eaton, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, at Middletown Regional Hospital in Middletown.
Born June 30, 1926, in Montgomery, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Millard B. and Minnie Lee (Rawlins) Sr., and had lived in Preble County since 1971. She was a member of the New Paris Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Dickson B. Cooper, died July 1, 1985.
Survivors include one son, Emmett D. Cooper of Cincinnati; one daughter, Mary E. Clark of Eaton; four grandchildren; two brothers, Millard B. Reynolds Jr. of Macon, Ga., and Dr. Bibb G. Reynolds of Kingston, Ga.; two sisters, Edna M. Wilkie and Betty Jo Fewell, both of Pittsview, Ala.; nieces and nephews, aunts; and cousins.
A brother, James E. Reynolds; and a sister, Juanita Reynolds, are also deceased.
Private graveside services were held at the convenience of the family, with Dr. William P. Anderson officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Philip Dawkins
Philip Dawkins, 72, of Marty Lane, West Alexandria, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born Jan. 24, 1924, in Dayton, he was the son of George and Genivieve (Tuthill) Dawkins. He was a graduate of Jackson High School and retired from Harrison Radiator in 1985 after 40 years' employment. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS Alwin.
Mr. Dawkins was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ; King Hiram Lodge #88, F&AM, where he had served as past master; and James E. Ryan Post #322 American Legion. He had also been a past member of the Order of Eastern Star.
He was preceded in death by his wife, D. Maxine Dawkins, in 1986.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Max and Becky Dawkins of Shalimar, Fla., Raymond and Debra Dawkins of Gillette, Wyo., and Richard and Penny Dawkins of West Alexandria; one daughter, Phyllis Dawkins of Troy; nine grandchildren; his mother, Genevieve Dawkins of Eaton; and a special friend, Sandy Schiml of Eaton.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 6, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Dr. James Altenbaumer officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria.

Lelia M. Elliott
Lelia Mae "Pokie" Elliott, 66, of Engle Road, West Alexandria, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born April 25, 1930, in Green Hall, Ky., she was the daughter of Jesse and Emily (Sexton) Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Elliott, in 1970.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Lee and Larry Wilson, Jeanne Lynn and Jim Wilson, Jayme Webb, Jennifer Lou and Daryl Mooney, all of Arlington, Texas, and Jo Ann and Jerry Juday of New Paris; two sisters, Pauline Powell and Margaret Combs, both of West Alexandria; a brother, Jesse Anderson of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Victoria Elliott, in 1949; a grandson, Jesse M. Reynolds, in 1972; and a brother, Orville Anderson, in 1996.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with Pastor Wesley Brubaker officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.

Wilbur L. Cail
Wilbur L. Cail, 87, of 116 Hutton St., New Paris, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997, at Heartland of Eaton.
Born April 25, 1909, in Washington Township, Preble County, he was the son of Harry Clifford and Mary Catharine (Koontz) Cail. He retired in 1977 from Ahaus in Richmond, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn R. Cail, in 1977.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara J. Hobbs and Nancy E. Petry, both of New Paris, Betty E. Weatherly of Alva, Fla., and Elma Singleton of Hamilton; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph H. Cail, in 1936; grandson, Stephen D. Hobbs, in 1989; great-granddaughter, Jessica Baker, in 1989; brothers, William Paul Cail, in 1971, and James Robert Cail; and a sister, Ruth F. Storer, who also died Saturday.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan 8, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, 109 W. Main St., with the Rev. Don Boyer officiating. Burial will be in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.

Ruth F. Storer
Ruth F. Storer, 75, of 3026 Miller-Williams Road, Eaton, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
A native and lifelong resident of Eaton, she was born June 5, 1921, the daughter of the late Harry C. and Gracie H. (Begoon) Cail. She was a member of the Eaton United Church of Christ, Rebekah Lodge #144 of Eaton and was a former 4-H advisor for 16 years.
Survivors include he husband, Hugh E. Storer; two daughters, Nancy Newland of Wapakoneta and Anne Storer of Cincinnati; a son and daughter-in-law, Hugh R. and Therese Storer of Norwalk; four granddaughters, Ashley Newland, Sarah Newland, Meagan Storer and Jessica Storer; a sister, Elma Singleton of Hamilton; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers Robert Cail and Paul Cail. Another brother, Wilbur Cail of New Paris, also died Saturday.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Eaton United Church of Christ, with the Rev. James W. Whitley officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.

John R. Hickle
John R. Hickle, 65, of U.S. 40 East, Lewisburg, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, at his home.
Born April 3, 1931, in Maysville, Ky., he was the son of Carl and Margaret (Howell) Hickle. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and had retired from Dayton Walther in 1984 after 28 years. He was a member of the Lewisburg Promenaders.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Shirley Hickle; two sons, Wade Hickle of West Carrollton and Jeff Hickle of Eaton; one daughter, Teresa Freeman of Arcanum; five grandchildren; four sisters, Edna Myers of Manchester, Ky., Peggy O'Cull of Maysville, Ky., Brenda Tyree of West Virginia and Ann Curtis of Indiana; four brothers, Carl Hickle Jr. of Farmersville, William Douglas Hickle and Henry Hickle, both of Indiana, and Jimmy Hickle of Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Nellie Hamilton and Betty Hedges.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 13, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Mike Millum officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
William E. Purnhagen
William E. Purnhagen, 93, of Engle Road, West Alexandria, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, at Canterbury Care Center in New Lebanon.
Born April 27, 1903, in Preble County, he was the son of John and Elizabeth (Roselius) Purnhagen. Mr. Purnhagen retired from Harrison Radiator. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, West Alexandria.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, in 1982; a sister, Catherine Holman; and two brothers, Clarence Purnhagen and Fred Purnhagen.
Survivors include a niece and nephew.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 11, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. J. Herman Bassler officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
