Irene A. Miertl
Irene A. Miertl, 85, of 626 Erin Drive, Oxford, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, in Oxford after a brief illness. She had lived in Spring Hill, Fla., for 25 years and in Oxford for the past three years.
Born Nov. 5, 1913, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of the late William and Anne (Waterson) Exelby. She was a member of the Oxford Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a daughter, Marianne Nystedt of Eaton; a son, Donn Miertl of Glasgow, Ky.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Miertl, in 1979; and a brother, Byron Exelby.
Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 27, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Jim Condrey officiating. There was no public calling. Burial was in Spring Hill, Fla.

Howard C. Clinard
Howard C. "Wessel" Clinard, 80, of Eaton Pike, West Alexandria, died Friday morning, Feb. 26, at Grandview Hospital in Dayton after a short illness.
Born June 3, 1918, in Dover, Tenn., he was the son of Roy E. and Florence (Howard) Clinard. During World War II, he worked with the CCC. He retired after 33 years of service with General Motors, and was owner/operator of Howard's Auto Sales and Wrecking of West Alexandria.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh and Bracy Clinard; and two sisters, Robbie Whitesell and Ann Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia (Howerton) Clinard; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy E. and Vicky Clinard Sr. of Eaton, Wayne and Peggy Clinard of West Alexandria and Michael Clinard of Dayton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and James Williams of Minford, Ohio, Angie and Thomas Howard of West Alexandria.
Also surviving are brothers, Roger Clinard and William Clinard, both of Dayton, and Richard Clinard of Clarksville, Tenn.; a sister, Ruth Adams of Marietta; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, March 1, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Debbie Williams officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Vera I. Conrad
Vera I. Conrad, 66, of Eaton, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
A native and lifelong resident of Eaton, she was born April 9, 1932. She was a member of the Church of Christ, 725 U.S. 35 West, Eaton.
Survivors include a son, Douglas W. Conrad of Celina, formerly of Eaton; two grandsons, Joshua Conrad and Jacob Conrad; one great-grandson; three sisters, Virginia Koontz and Flora Burrows, both of Eaton, and Lorene Henderson of New Lebanon; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon E. Conrad, on Feb. 20, 1981; a sister, Glenna Moistner; and three brothers, Charlie Horn, Larry Horn and Harry Horn.
Funeral services were Monday, March 1, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Richard Boroff officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.

Gladys R. Eley
Gladys R. Eley, 100, formerly of Eaton, died Thursday, Feb. 25, at St. Tammany General Hospital in Covington, La.
Born March 20, 1898, in Eaton, she was the daughter of John F. and Clare (Mikesell) Randall. She was a 1916 graduate of Eaton High School. Mrs. Eley had lived in the New Orleans, La., area for over 70 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin W. Eley, in 1968; and a son, Charles E. Eley.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Edwin W. Eley II and Marion K. Simoneaux; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Tuesday, March 2, at Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton, with Philip Johnson officiating. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of local arrangements.
C. Shelton Thompson Sr.
C. Shelton "Doc" Thompson Sr., 95, of Hamilton, died Friday, Feb. 26, at Garden Manor Nursing Home in Middletown. He was a former Eaton resident.
Born Feb. 26, 1904 in Manchester, Ohio, he was the son of the late Eugene E. and Clara Mabel (Smith) Thompson. He retired in 1969 as a supervisor from NCR Corporation, Dayton.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Marjorie A.B. Thompson of Arcanum; stepdaughters, Doris Zehler of Hamilton and Loretta Wilson of Lincoln, Mass.; four grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Allen of West Union, Ohio; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Chlorine (Baldwin) Thompson, in 1937; his second wife, Zelma (Sample) Thompson, in 1990 after 53 years of marriage; a son, C. Shelton Thompson Jr.; a stepdaughter, Helen Jenkins; and sisters, Helen Sullivan and Betsy King.
Funeral services were Monday, March 1, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Dr. Marjorie A.B. Thompson, the Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Maxedon Jr. and H. James Zehler officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.

LeRoy S. Skiles
LeRoy S. Skiles, 99, formerly of Lewisburg and Verona, died Saturday evening, Feb. 27, at Englewood Manor Nursing Home in Englewood.
Born Aug. 18, 1899, in Preble County, he was the son of William and Viola (Huff) Skiles. He was a cabinet maker and carpenter, and had worked for Northmont Schools in Englewood.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delpha L. Skiles, in 1989; brothers, John S. Skiles, Minor E. Skiles and Charles Skiles; and sisters, Irene Wicker and Hester Good.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, 411 N. Commerce St., Lewisburg, with the Rev. Michael McDonald officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Irene M. Driskell
Irene M. Driskell, 79, of Eaton-Lewisburg Road, Eaton, died Saturday, Feb. 27, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born March 7, 1919, in Phillipsburg, she was the daughter of Herschel and Helen (Wellbaum) Waggoner. She retired from NCR Corporation in 1974.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Driskell, in 1986; a son, Charles George; and a brother, Ralph Waggoner.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Diane George of West Alexandria; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Everett Waggoner of Eaton.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 2, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, followed by burial in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton.
Earl Jordan
Earl Jordan, 85, of Aukerman Street, Eaton, died Sunday, Feb. 28, at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Eaton.
Born July 20, 1913, in Preble County, he was the son of Orion and Mary O. (Shellenbarger) Jordan. Mr. Jordan was a farmer most of his life, and retired from General Motors in 1980 after 39 1/2 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Salem Lutheran Church, West Alexandria.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1998.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Sharon Jordan of Eaton; three daughters, Mary Kelly of Eaton, Lillian (Ray) Moore of West Milton and Earla (Tom) Donaldson of West Alexandria; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Jesse Jordan of Circleville; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Jordan, Roy Jordan and Edward Jordan; two sisters, Ruth Waller and Lillian Jordan; and a grandson, Timothy Kelly.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 4, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. J. Herman Bassler and the Rev. Daniel Snider officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Rev. Elgin L. Green
The Rev. Elgin L. Green, 86, formerly of Camden, died Tuesday, March 9, at the home of his daughter in Oklahoma.
He was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Richland, Okla. He had been pastor of Grace Brethren Church in Camden for 17 years. He was active in the Christian Service Brigade in Allegan, Mich., since 1952.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine; and six children, Barbara Michael of Hawaii, Dora Melone of California, Mary Duffner of Michigan, Lois Aikman of Oklahoma, Elgin L. Green Jr. of Virginia and John Green of Washington.
Gilbert Croucher
Gilbert "Gib" Croucher, 64, of Camden, died Tuesday, March 16, at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton.
Born Feb. 15, 1935, in Hamilton, he was the son of William and Anna (Northern) Croucher. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1962, and was employed at Square D until his retirement in 1977. He was a 4-H advisor in the Preble County area for 24 years and loved horses.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Thelma (Wolfe) Croucher, whom he married July 25, 1953, in Brookville, Ind.; one son, Michael (Debbie) Croucher of Camden; one daughter, Kimberly (Thomas) Whiteaker of Camden; four grandchildren, Jodi (Rusty) Worley, Melissa Croucher, Ashley and Christopher Whiteaker; one great-grandchild, Jordan Worley; one brother, John (Sue) Croucher of Hamilton; four sisters, Ida Nash and Mary Wilkerson, both of Hamilton, Mattie Stang of Seven Mile and Grace (Ray) Harp of Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ira Croucher; and a sister, Effie Still.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 20, at R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Willard Baker officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.
James A. Maxel
James A. Maxel, 52, of Delaware Crossing, Eaton, died Friday morning, March 19, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind., after an extended illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1946, in Richmond, Ind., he was the son of Ervin C. and Norma J. (Brown) Maxel. He was a 1964 graduate of Eaton High School. Mr. Maxel served with the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1967, and with the Ohio National Guard and Reserve. He had worked for Richmond State Hospital over 10 years and was currently employed at Green Acres of Richmond, Ind. He attended the United Church of Christ in Eaton.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry L. Maxel, in 1944; and a sister, Diane K. Maxel, in 1947.
Survivors include his mother, Norma J. Maxel of Eaton; two sons and daughter-in-law, Troy S. and Sherri Maxel of Springfield, and Todd S. Maxel of Eaton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheri L. and Rodney Reynolds of New Paris; five grandchildren, Thomas, Tyler and Tanner Maxel, Michaela and Megan Reynolds; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were Monday, March 22, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. James W. Whitley officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery near West Alexandria.
