Raleigh Fugate
Raleigh "Dale" Fugate, 66, of Medway, Ohio, formerly of Dayton, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 20, at his home.
Born Jan. 1, 1933, in Napfor, Ky., he was the son of the late Henry and Flaura (Tharpe) Fugate. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, having served as a tank commander with the 72nd Tank Battalion, 3rd Armored Division. He was a member of both the VFW and AmVets.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl, Paul, Henry, Charles and Billy Ray Fugate.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann (Hobbs) Fugate, whom he married July 2, 1955; a daughter, Gail Hall of Riverside, Ohio; grandchildren, Lisa Castor, Sherry Hall and David Hall, all of Riverside; great-grandchildren, Teia and Christopher Castor; brothers, Grover Fugate of Florida, Herman Fugate of New Lebanon, Hubert Lee Fugate of Eaton and Robert Fugate of Chicago, Ill.; sisters, Mozella Cripps of Eaton, Dora McKenzie of Kentucky and Irene Webb of Brookville; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 24, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Pastor Paul Straub officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Bertha Phelps
Bertha Phelps, 96, formerly of West Second Street, West Alexandria, died Thursday, July 22, at Heartland of Eaton.
Born Sept. 26, 1902, she was the daughter of Joshua and Vinnie (Dies) Phelps. She was a former member of the United Church of Christ in Farmersville.
Survivors include a brother, Forrest Phelps of New Lebanon; a sister, Ethel Lynch of Kettering; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Phelps and Roy Phelps.
Funeral services were Friday, July 23, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Lowell Spencer officiating. Burial was in Twin Valley Cemetery on Enterprise Road, West Alexandria.
Dale Peters
Dale Peters, 73, of U.S. 35 East, West Alexandria, died Tuesday, July 20, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born July 8, 1926, in New Lebanon, he was the son of Delbert and Leona (Bacon) Peters. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a lifelong farmer and had retired from General Motors after 28 years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ingomar; King Hiram Lodge #88, F&AM; and James E. Ryan Post #322.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Peters; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Rita Peters of Safety Harbor, Fla.; grandchildren, Cody and Tiffany Peters; nephew, Bill and Karen Bliss of West Alexandria; great-nieces, Melinda McLean and Melissa Cobb; and nephew, Tom Bliss; a sister-in-law, Evadean Coffroad of Dayton; and cousins.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 24, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ingomar, with the Rev. Terri Peterson officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery near West Alexandria. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements. Masonic services were conducted Friday evening at the funeral home.

Olivia R. Bales
Olivia R. "Bobbie" Bales, 80, of New Lebanon, died Friday afternoon, July 23.
Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Levy, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Hallie S. and Clemma B. (White) Trimble. She retired in 1982 from Inland-Division of GM, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star-Brookville Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter M. Bales, on Aug. 3, 1996; brothers, Hallie S. "Red" Trimble Jr. and Allen Trimble; sisters, Anna L. Trimble and Louise Bowers.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Sharon Smith, Bob and Marie Bales, all of New Lebanon, Doug and Vicki Bales of Brookville; daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Harold Shell of Farmersville, Pam Bales, Debbie and Joe Johnson, all of Farmersville; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret E. Riley of Springfield and Pauline Corriell of Lakeland, Fla.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 27, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Pastor James Whorton officiating. Entombment was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria. Eastern Star services were conducted Monday evening at the funeral home.

Donald Silver
Donald "Jack" Silver, 58, of Springboro, formerly of Eaton, died Saturday, July 24, at Sycamore Medical Center in Miamisburg after a sudden illness.
Born Nov. 29, 1940, in Eaton, he was the son of the late Maurice C. Sr. and Betty L. (Cottrell) Silver.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Maury C. Silver, in 1998.
Survivors include brothers, Michael Silver of Eaton, Gary Silver of Springboro and Danny Silver of Orange Park, Fla.; and a sister, Penny Silver of Eaton.
Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, 220 E. Main St. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Georgianna Singer
Georgianna Singer, 87, of Lewisburg, died Saturday, July 24, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 10, 1911, in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Hallie Amanda (Cloyd) Singer. She was a graduate of Lewisburg High School and Miami University in 1923. She retired in 1973 after 40 years as a school teacher in public education, with 12 years at Lewisburg schools and 28 years at Jane Adams Elementary School in Dayton.
She attended Memorial United Methodist Church, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the Lewisburg Book Club, a life member of the Preble County Retired Teachers Association and the Lewisburg Historical Society.
Survivors include first cousins, Donald Singer of San Mateo, Calif., Lewis Singer of Lodi, Calif., and Carolyn Ball of Alta Loma, Calif.; and numerous other cousins.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 27, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Jon Thomas officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.

Robert C. Gardner
Robert C. Gardner, 76, formerly of Orchard Street, West Manchester, died Saturday, July 24, at Gade Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born Feb. 4, 1923, in Preble County, he was the son of John and Alice (Borgwardt) Gardner. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, and retired from Brookbank Chevrolet in Richmond, Ind., after 18 years.
Survivors include a son, Alton Gardner of Eaton; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, John Gardner Jr. of Eaton and William Gardner of West Alexandria; a sister, Helen Titcombe of Eaton; a stepdaughter, Juanita Craycraft of Eaton; nieces and nephews; and close friends, Joe and Glenna Martin of Greenville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irttie Marie Gardner, in 1987.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 27, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. David Ireton officiating. Burial was in Monroe Cemetery.
Marvin McGriff
Marvin McGriff, 81, of West Manchester, died Sunday, July 25, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind., after a sudden illness.
Born July 20, 1918, in Darke County, he was the son of the late Blair Burdette and Shearl B. (Poppaw) McGriff, and had lived in West Manchester most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a retired carpenter.
Mr. McGriff was past commander of American Legion Post #665, West Manchester; past Preble County American Legion commander; past member of VFW Post #4161, Arcanum; past member of AmVets #726, Eldorado; and a present member of American Legion Post #245, New Madison.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verena G. (Grauman) McGriff, on July 3, 1987; two brothers, Burdette "Mac" McGriff and Deo "Doc" McGriff.
Survivors include a son, Terry McGriff of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Melanie Bright of Tucson, Ariz., and Sandra Scheerens of Medina, Ohio; granddaughter, Megan Bright; brother, Belford P. McGriff of Greenville; a sister, Darlene Sinck of Eaton; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were Tuesday, July 27, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Castine Cemetery.

Darrel L. Buckingham
Darrel L. "Tony" Buckingham, 69, of Centerville, Ohio, died Sunday, July 25.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran. After retiring as a residential contractor, he pursued his interest in farming. He was a member of Parents Without Partners for over 20 years and participated in the Senior Olympics for 10 years. He was an avid volleyball player all his life.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Gibson; and two brothers, Emerson and Dale Buckingham.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Jim Stuart; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Liz Buckingham of Idaho; four grandchildren, Ashley, Josh, Kathryn and Jimmy; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Marceil and Jay Gibson of Florida; two brothers and sister-in-law, Lowell Buckingham, Bob and Nancy Buckingham; and a sister-in-law, Jane Buckingham.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road, Centerville.

Virginia M. Faris
Virginia M. Faris, 84, of Morning Sun, died early Tuesday morning, July 27, at Oxford View Nursing Center.
Born Nov. 13, 1914, in Miamitown, Ohio, she was the daughter of Harry and Phyllis (Baughman) Kupfer. On Oct. 21, 1938, she married Wilson Faris in Miamitown, and shortly after they moved to the Morning Sun area.
In 1968, Mrs. Faris became the first employee of Hueston Woods Lodge, where she worked as a banquet supervisor for 28 years. She was a longtime member of the Morning Sun United Presbyterian Church, and was a recent active member of the Senior Citizens of Oxford.
In addition to her husband, Wilson, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Earl George; a grandson and his wife, Kurt and Shelly George; and two great-children, Mandy and Steven.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 29, at Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, 101 W. Church St., Oxford. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral services.

John W. Alvey Sr.
John W. Alvey Sr., 90, of 1928 U.S. 127 North, Eaton, died Thursday, Aug. 5.
Born Nov. 17, 1909, in Cottage Grove, Ind., he was the son of Clifford and Icie (Cory) Alvey, and had lived in the Richmond and Preble County areas all his life. He retired from Avco where he worked as a toolmaker for 33 years. Mr. Alvey was a member of the Moose and Eagles lodges.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Letha Alvey; two sons, John Alvey Jr. and Phillip Alvey, both of Richmond, Ind.; six daughters, Esther Mock and Edna Pittman, both of Winchester, Ind., Carolyn Schwab, Bonnie Kenworthy, Ruth Hasket and Phyllis Hildebrand, all of Richmond, Ind.
Also surviving are two stepdaughters, Eunice Kompinski of Sylva, N.C., and Gladys Sinks of Eaton; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Maxine Stanton and Pearl Gulley, both of Liberty, Ind., and Mary Martha Shepler of Hagerstown, Ind.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Alvey, Eugene Alvey and Hershel Alvey; and two sisters, Irene Nash and Charlotte Watkins.
Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 9, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Chapel, Richmond, Ind., followed by burial in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond.
