Mary T. Jackson
Mary Toler Jackson, 85, of Camden, died Thursday, Sept. 16, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Born Nov. 11, 1913, in Xenia, she was the daughter of the late Francis H. and Esta (Toler) Jackson.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, John Francis, Thomas Leslie Lee, Byron Atherly, James Anderson, Charles William and Hutton Eli Jackson; and three sisters, Rachel Cathern Keehner, Esta May Richardson and Bessie Belle Clark.
Survivors include a daughter, Glenna C. Howard of West Manchester; three grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Kathryn Kiracofe
Kathryn Kiracofe, 92, of Bridgewater, Va., died Monday, Sept. 13.
Born Feb. 16, 1907, in Gratis, she was one of 11 children of James and Vinnie (Eby) Kiracofe. She graduated from Manchester College and Bethany Bible Seminary. She was a missionary in India for 35 years. Much of her life was devoted to adult education and literacy programs in the village communities of Gujarat state.
She moved to Bridgewater Retirement Community after retiring in 1973. At the age of 81, she completed and published the book, "A Dream -- A Reality, Memories of 35 Years in India." Church Women United recognized her with the "Valiant Woman of the Year" award in 1994. She was a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include four sisters, Elizabeth Wampler of Bridgewater, Va., Winifred Loser of Greenville, Martha Nipp of New Castle, Ind., and Lois Gene Holland of Eaton; a sister-in-law, Rose Kiracofe of Eaton; and two brothers-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and two brothers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bridgewater Retirement Home, Bridgewater, Va.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at the Gratis Church of the Brethren.
George H. Swain
George H. Swain, 90, of 4178 Eaton-Gettysburg Road, Eaton, died Friday, Sept. 17, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born June 24, 1909 in Eaton, he was the son of the late John R. and Ollie (Tellis) Swain. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was a Washington Township trustee for 19 years.
Survivors include his wife, Leota (Wilson) Swain whom he married Aug. 17, 1929; son, John E. Swain of Eaton; daughter, Patricia A. Kelley of Eaton; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Swain.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Mound Hill Union Cemetery with the Rev. Lisa C. Ellison officiating. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.

Fred A. Tobias
Fred A. Tobias, 76, of Eaton, died Friday morning, Sept. 17, at Grandview Hospital in Dayton.
Born June 18, 1923 in Dayton, he was the son of late Lester and Susie (Brock) Tobias. He retired from the Parker-Hannifin Co. in Eaton and was a member of the Church of Christ in Eaton. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Posts of Eaton, the American Legion Crawford Post in Illinois, the Bolivar Masonic Lodge of Eaton and Antioch Shrine of Dayton.
Survivors include his wife, Nelda M. (Woodyard) Tobias, whom he married May 2, 1947; daughters and sons-in-law Jacque and Don Craig of Eaton, and Micki and Jim Graves of Summerville, S.C.; grandchildren Mark Boomershine and wife Redah, Mike Boomershine, Marty Boomershine, Naomi Caldwell and Jessica Cortte; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 20, at the Barnes Funeral Home -- Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, 3377 U.S. 35, West Alexandria.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Church of Christ. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Leona F. Maddox
Leona Francis Maddox, 79, West Elkton, died Friday, Sept. 17, at her residence.
Born Dec. 17, 1919, in Fleming County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late C.M. and Mary Belle Parker. She had lived in the Preble County area since 1949. She worked at Dayton Flexible Products in Eaton and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Maddox in 1978; two granddaughters, Gail Lynn Smith and Cheryl Brandenburg; and great-granddaughter Elena Parker McDaniel.
Survivors include a son, Darrell P. Maddox of Camden; two daughters, W. June Smith and husband Richard of West Elkton, and Mary Brandenburg and husband Charles of Middletown; nine grandchildren, Dedra Marie McDaniel, Denise Michelle Hubbard, Dina Markita Maddox, Dennis Elwood Huston, Mark Allen Smith, Michael Wayne Smith, Craig Eliot Brandenburg, Charla Elizabeth Lanier and Chris Eliot Brandenburg; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Joseph Baker-Stevens Funeral Home in Middletown with Dr. Roger Green, Dr. Howard Sears and the Rev. John Ward officiating. Burial was in Fairmound Cemetery, West Elkton.

Matilda E. Jurgens
Matilda E. Jurgens, 92, formerly of New Paris, died Friday, Sept. 17, at Heritage House of Richmond, Ind. where she has resided since April 5, 1994.
Born July 7, 1907, in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Elizabeth (Westendorf) Weiss. She retired in 1972 from Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.; was past president of the PTA of Jefferson Township Schools; member of YMI Auxiliary of Richmond, New Paris Triple L Club, Preble County Democrat Club; past member of Pleasant Hill Community Club; Wayne County Women's Bowling Association; St. Ann's Sodality and St. John's Catholic Church in New Paris.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin C. Jurgens in 1974; a daughter, Deborah Copenhefer in 1987; a grandson and a great grandson; and nine brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Donna Jurgens of New Paris; daughters and son-in-law, Lois J. Mendenhall of Venice, Fla., and Janice A. and Bill Dargie of Richmond, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A prayer service was held Monday, Sept. 20, at the Barnes Funeral Home, 109 W. Main St., New Paris, followed by the Funeral Mass in St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery in New Paris.

Cheryl L. Pemberton
Cheryl L. Pemberton, 52, of West Alexandria, died Sunday morning, Sept. 19, at her home following a lengthy ill.
Born Aug. 22, 1947, in Hamilton, she was the daughter of William and Frances (Blanton) Pollard. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses -- Eaton North Congregation, and was a voluntary Bible worker for 26 years.
Survivors include her husband, Luther A. Pemberton, whom she married Nov. 23, 1963; daughter Patty Combs of Eaton; sons Doug Pemberton and Darrell Pemberton both of Eaton; five grandchildren; mother, Frances Ireland of Eaton; brothers, Tony Vicena of Camden, Terry Vicena of Quincy, and Ralph Ireland of Celebration, Fla.; sisters, Karen Heidemann of Azle, Texas and Barbie Owen of Dispatanta, Va.; nine nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 229 Wayne Trace Road, Eaton, with Brother Mark Hoffman officiating.
Private burial services for the family will be held Wednesday morning, Sept. 22, at Preble Memory Gardens. Barnes Funeral Home -- Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, are in charge of arrangements.
Amber L. Hodge
Amber L. Hodge, 24, of New Lebanon, died Sunday morning, Sept. 19, as the result of an automobile accident.
Born June 23, 1975 in Dayton, she was the daughter of Rickey E. and Cathy (Allen) Hodge. She was the operations manager at the Alco Department Store in New Lebanon and had attended the Dayton Christian Center.
Survivors include her parents, Cathy and Joe Harris of New Carlisle, and Rickey and Karen Hodge of Laura; sister, Mandy Harris of Dayton; brothers, Joe Harris of Charleston, S.C., Chris Harris of Raleigh, N.C., Zach Hodge and Lee Hodge of Laura; maternal grandparents J.L. and Gladys Allen of Tennessee; paternal grandmothers, Martha Hodge of West Milton and Wanda Harris of Dayton; fiance Mark Toops of New Lebanon; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Barnes Funeral Home -- Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, 3377 U.S. 35, West Alexandria with Pastor Doris Swartz officiating. Burial will be in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

Judy K. Walters
Judy K. Walters, 55, of Rossburg, died Monday, Sept. 20, at Wayne Hospital.
Born Nov. 11, 1943, in Celina, the daughter of John and Pauline (Poppe) Koons of Celina and the late Francis Christian, she was preceded in death by her son, Mark Barnes.
Walters was a retired school teacher, teaching in the St. Henry School system for 4 years and the Ansonia School system for 32 years. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Greenville and the Darke County Democratic Women.
She is survived by her husband, Tony Walters; daughters and sons-in-law, Brian and Lora Brandon, Arcanum; Bobby and Amy Dalton, Smyrna, Tenn.; step children: Terri Pollack, Columbus; Tim and Mindy Walters, Ansonia; Tony A. Walters, Winchester, Ind.; Susan and Dan Denlinger of Eaton; grandchildren: Joshua, Zachary and Madison Brandon; Haley and Brittany Dalton; step grandchildren: Alyssa and Corey Pollack; Lana and Reese Walters; Jordan Walters; Samantha and Victoria Denlinger; one sister, Mrs. Jeffery (Debra) Tuneberg of Celina and one sister-in-law, Mrs. John (Karen) Burkett of Greenville.
Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Chuck Boomhower and Rev. Edward Battiste officiating. Burial will follow in St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at the Oliver Funeral Home, 1000 N. Broadway, Greenville.

Lewis H. Ellis
Lewis H. Ellis, 88, formerly of Wesler Road in New Paris, died Monday, Sept. 20, at Mecklenberg Healthcare Center in Charlotte, N.C., following a brief illness.
Born on Feb. 7, 1911, in Richmond, Ind., he was the son of Lewis H. and Anna I. (DeArmond) Ellis. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran and retired as a Major.
Ellis was a member of Masonic Blue Lodge at New Castle, Ind., S.W.A.C.; Scottish Rite Valley at Indianapolis, Ind.; Manetho Shrine #15 of Richmond, Ind. and Indiana and New Paris United Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by wife, Martha E. Ellis; sister Laura Blackburn; and brothers, John, Harry, Robert and Paul Ellis.
Survivors include a son, Lewis H. Ellis III of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Rhea Hutson of Knightstown, Ind. and a brother, Clarence Ellis of Indianapolis.
Graveside services are to be held Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m., at Springlawn Cemetery in New Paris, with Rev. Gilmer Smith officiating.
