Herman E. Dalton
Herman E. "Brownie" Dalton, of Eaton, died Friday, Nov. 19, at his home after an extended illness.
Born in Hillsville, Va., he was the son of the late Lee and Artie Missie (Jennings) Dalton. He was raised in Lavern, Minn., and his family moved to Preble County when he was 10 years old. At the age of 17, he began working at the Hiestand Lumber Company Sawmill. He managed and operated the mill from 1954 until it closed in the early 1960s.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Dalton and Pearl Showalter, both in 1988; his twin brother, Sherman J. Dalton, in 1995; and three nephews, Ronald Showalter, Gary Showalter and Leroy Dalton.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Thelma I. (Price) Dalton; daughters and son-in-law, Carole E. and Dennis N. Boomershine of West Alexandria, and Marlene M. Frantz of Eaton; a sister-in-law, Laura Dalton of Eaton; a special nephew, John S. Dalton of Eaton; five grandchildren, Gregory L. (Barbara) Winn, Kelly E. (David) Montgomery, Tracy L. Campbell, all of Eaton, Stephen D. (Amy) Winn of Brookville, and Cynthia E. (Douglas) Miller of West Alexandria; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 22, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Greg A. Hyre officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Emergency Squad, or to any Hospice Unit.
Mary E. Henderson
Mary E. Henderson, 88, of East Somers Street, Eaton, died Monday, Nov. 22, at her home.
Born Dec. 13, 1910, in Richmond, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Margaret (Broaddus) Moberly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Henderson, in 1975; sisters, Inez Covington and Nell Juett; a brother, William T. Moberly; and great-grandson, James Thomas Strausbaugh.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Thelma L. and James Strausbaugh of Kettering; sisters, Norma Sims of Arizona and Margaret King of Kansas; brothers, Charles Moberly of Illinois and Wesley Gene Reynolds of Arizona; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 27, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Alice A. Hopper
Alice A. Hopper, 77, of New Paris, formerly of Newport, Ky., died Tuesday morning, Nov. 23, at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Eaton.
She was born June 12, 1922, in Kenton County, Ky. Prior to moving to New Paris in 1990, she retired from the Lakeside Nursing Home in Ft. Thomas, Ky.
Survivors include a son, Leslie "Mike" Hopper of New Paris; daughters, Shirley Franklin of Richmond, Ind., Mary A. Smith and husband Roger of New Paris; grandchildren, Melissa Hopper of Corbin, Ky., Patty Beckett of Eaton, Josh Smith and Jennifer Smith, both of New Paris, Mark Hawkins and Mary Hawkins, both of Richmond, Ind.
Also surviving are step-grandchildren, Jason Smith and Kelly Smith, both of Richmond, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Graydon Smith of Richmond, Ind., Dave Beckett of Eaton, Cody Smith and Shane Smith, both of Eaton; sisters, Edith Brewer of Richmond, Ind., and Brenda Bishop of Covington, Ky.
Graveside services were Friday, Nov. 26, at Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria. Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.
Charles R. Ratliff
Charles Raymond Ratliff, 72, of Beverly Hills, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 22, in Harrison, Ariz.
Born Feb. 14, 1927, in Trenton, he was the son of Everett and Esther (Frisby) Ratliff. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Frances (Nelson) Ratliff; three sons, Dean of Georgia, Ronald of Washington and David of Montana; three stepchildren, Larry Nelson of Kansas City, Randy Nelson and Susan (Kenneth) Nichols of Harrison, Ariz.; one brother, James E. Ratliff of West Alexandria; and one sister, Shirley Ratliff of Cincinnati.
A private burial was scheduled.
Judith A. Howell
Judith Ann Howell, 64, of Lewisburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, at her home.
Born Oct. 5, 1935, in Dayton, she was the daughter of the late Harold A. and Mary L. (Bennett) Reck.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Robert L. Howell; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra G. and V.L. French of Latham, Ohio, Marcia A. and Keith Wilson, Allison M. and Daniel Owen, all of Lewisburg; a son, Loren G. Howell of Lewisburg; sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Marvin Treadway of Odessa, Texas; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 27, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Bryan Rea officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewisburg Emergency Unit.
Hope E. Estep
Hope E. Estep, 4-month-old daughter of Rick and Sheri Estep of U.S. 40, Lewisburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Children's Medical Center in Dayton after an extended illness.
She was born July 8 in Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, William McCracken Jr., in 1982.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her maternal grandmother, Betty McCracken of Shepherdsville, Ky.; paternal grandparents, Clinton and Jean Estep of Somerset, Ky.; paternal great-grandmother, Gertie Estep of Somerset, Ky.; two sisters, Candice C. Estep and Amy C. Estep, both of Lewisburg.
Funeral services were Sunday, Nov. 28, at Memorial United Methodist Church, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Jon Thomas and the Rev. Michael Pratt officiating. Graveside services were Monday, Nov. 29, at Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg. Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Joe Smith
Joe Smith, 94, of Camden, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Born Sept. 20, 1905, in Leslie County, Ky., he was the son of the late Frank and Amanda (Simpson) Smith. He was an operator at Champion Paper for 32 years before retiring in 1970, and was also a farmer. Mr. Smith was a member of the Somerville Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Stella Smith; two daughters, Marjorie (Dewey) Minton and Fern (Bob) Brannon, of Hamilton; three stepchildren, James (Loretta) Roberts of Camden, Juanita Frazze of Chantally, Va., and Sue Leib of Dayton; a brother, Shellie Smith of Camden; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha; four brothers, Barney, James, Omas and Miller Smith; and three sisters, Dora Brock, Dallie Morgan and Ellen Smith.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 27, at R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, Camden, with Roley Parker officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.
Myron D. Arnett
Myron D. Arnett, 69, of New Paris, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind., after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 17, 1930, in Richmond, Ind., he was the son of Lester R. and Nellie R. (Upton) Arnett. He was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson Township High School. Mr. Arnett was owner/operator of Arnett's Masonry Contracting at New Paris, retiring in 1995 after 46 years of service. He was the masonry contractor for the Annie Oakley Memorial in Greenville.
He was a 48-year member of the New Paris Kiwanis Club, serving as president for four terms; was awarded the most prestigious award in Kiwanis, the Hixson Award in March for being a devoted member, promoting youth programs and raising financial help for youths in the New Paris area.
Mr. Arnett was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of New Paris, and served four years on the Building Board. He was president of the New Paris Chamber of Commerce for two terms; president of the Cedar Springs Medical Development Corp. which brought Dr. Jeung Ahn to New Paris; and served on the Board of Public Affairs in the late 1950s.
He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Lavonne Arnett, in 1942; and an infant brother, in 1928.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, June Mae (Keller) Arnett; two sons and daughter-in-law, Michael J. Arnett, Gregory A. and Sheryl Arnett of New Paris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Candace J. and Charley Dunham of New Paris, Kristi M. and Kevin Roush of Nashville, Ind.; mother, Nellie R. Arnett of New Paris.
Also surviving are sisters and brother-in-law, Janet I. and Stanley Arthur of New Paris, and Janice E. Miller of Greenfield, Ind.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert E. and Barbara Arnett, M. James and Lee Arnett of New Paris; L. Duane and Merry Arnett of Carol Stream, Ill.
Other survivors are 10 grandchildren, Michael J. Arnett, Amy Charles, April Arnett, Holli Yount, Chad Dunham, Eric Arnett, Ben Arnett, Dave Arnett, Zachary Roush and Austin Roush; two great-grandchildren, Shaylie Wilson and Carly Charles; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were Sunday, Nov. 28, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Gary L. Green officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.

Norman K. Miller
Norman K. Miller, 68, of Trotwood, died Sunday, Nov. 28, at Hospice of Dayton following a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 30, 1930, in Balkan, Ky., he was the son of the late Dave and Blanche (Ramsey) Miller. He retired in 1991 from Borden Incorporated of Dayton, and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was the past secretary/treasurer for the Evarts, Ky., Lions Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hubert Miller; and a sister, Louise Turpin.
Survivors include his wife, Claudine (Barton) Miller, whom he married on May 31, 1953; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna J. and Bill Crawford of New Lebanon; a son, Kenny G. Miller of Trotwood; grandchildren, Cara (Eric) Gearhart, Erin Crawford, Bonnie Kay Miller and Brandon Miller; great-grandson, Zachary Alan Miller; sisters, Alice Osborne, Lila Baxter Kules and Betty Brittian, all of Lexington, Ky., and Phyllis Erhart of Atlanta, Ga.
Funeral services were Tuesday night, Nov. 30, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Garden Chapel, West Alexandria. Private interment services will be Wednesday morning, Dec. 1, at Preble Memory Gardens.
Jake Morris
Jake Morris, infant son of Wesley Scott Morris and Catherine Kaye Weist of Middletown, died Friday, Nov. 26, at Middletown Regional Hospital in Middletown.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents, Paula Lowe and Rick Morris of Middletown; maternal grandparents, Gail and Clemmie Weist of Middletown; paternal great-grandparents, Martha Oakley, and Troy and Orpha Morris of Middletown; maternal great-grandmother, Cora Baker of Middletown.
Other survivors include uncles, Aaron Morris of Middletown, Terry Weist of Trenton and Joseph Weist of Terre Haute, Ind.; aunts, Shelly Morris, Kimberly Weist and Elizabeth Weist, all of Middletown, and Sondra Weist of Mason.
He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandfather, Leonard Oakley; and maternal great-grandparents, Daily Swartz Sr., and Louis and Blanche Weist.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Stephen Cable officiating. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery. Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, Middletown, is in charge of arrangements.
Retta M. Gray
Retta M. Gray, 88, of Fairborn, formerly of Preble County, died Sunday evening, Nov. 28, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Born Oct. 15, 1911, in Cookeville, Tenn., she was the daughter of Henry and Emma (Madewell) Lee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert B. Gray, in 1981; five brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne L. Grant of Eldorado and Don A. Grant of Bellevue, Wash.; a daughter, Wilma Aldrich of Fairborn; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, 220 E. Main St. Burial will be held in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria.
