Phillip E. Matheny
Phillip E. Matheny, 35, of Eaton, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, Dec. 8.
He was born June 19, 1964, in Dayton.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna (Hall) Matheny, on Jan. 25, 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy S. (Bettker) Matheny, whom he married Aug. 7, 1995; stepchildren, Crystal, Levi, Brian and Tabitha Grubb, all at home, and Nicki Warmouth of West Alexandria; father, Jesse Paul Matheny of Eaton; brother and sister-in-law, David L. and Patty Matheny of Huber Heights; sister and brother-in-law, LaVerne and Raymond Tompkins of Eaton; nephews and niece, Scott, Sean and Heather; brothers-in-law, Tom Bettker of Eaton, Ted Bettker of Tennessee, Raymond Bettker of Cincinnati and Frank Humphrey of Miamisburg; and father-in-law, Ted Bettker of Eaton.
Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 11, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Pastor Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

Pauline V. Cira
Pauline V. Cira, 85, of Lima, died Monday, Dec. 6, at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 3, 1914, in Piqua, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Ethel (Owens) Paradore. She was retired from Elder Beerman as a department manager, and had been employed at the Leader Store in Lima. Mrs. Cira was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph R. Cira, whom she married Aug. 3, 1937; one son, Robert J. (Nancy) Cira of Eaton; one daughter, Joyce (Larry) Hatley of Lima; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister, Dorothy Steward of Lima.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Paradore; and a sister, Lucille Cira.
Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Dec. 10, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Lima, with the Rev. Keith McCormack officiating. Burial was in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima. Hogenkamp Rousculp Funeral Home, Lima, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rita's Hospice, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Scott J. Stowe
Scott Joseph Stowe, 28, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Middletown Hospital in Middletown.
He was the son of Joan (Woosley) Stowe, deceased, and Donald Stowe, and was a long-term resident of Doty House/Abilities First Foundation in Middletown.
Survivors include a brother, Jesse R. Stowe of Delaware, Ohio; and his grandparents.
Memorial services were held Friday, Dec. 10, at Doty House, Middletown. Unglesby-Anderson Funeral Home, Franklin, was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Thomas E. Schamaun
Thomas E. Schamaun, O.D., 78, of Eaton, died Saturday evening, Dec. 11, at Dayton Heart Hospital in Dayton.
Born Feb. 10, 1921, in Bazine, Kan., he was the son of the late John and Ruby Blyler (Anderson) Schamaun. Dr. Schamaun was a 1939 graduate of Dighton (Kan.) High School, a graduate of the University of Kansas and Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1948. He was a doctor of optometry from 1949-1983 and was the first "eye doctor" in the Eaton area.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; a former member of American Legion Post #215, Eaton; a former member of the Eaton Lions Club, 1951-1982; a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Eaton; a former member of Bolivar Lodge #82, F&AM, Eaton; a member of the American Optometry Association; former vice president of Eaton Loan & Home Aid Company and served six years on the board; a member of the Eaton Country Club where he served as secretary and treasurer, and worked on the Tree Committee.
Dr. Schamaun built bluebird houses for the Blue Bird Trail in the Eaton area, and was a member of the Audubon Society.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Patricia R. (Painter) Schamaun; sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory T., D.O., and Victoria Schamaun of Greenville, Rodrick T. and Sharon Schamaun of Fairfield; daughters and son-in-law, Linda R. and Merle Struble of San Antonio, Texas, and Nannette S. Moreland of Fruitland Park, Fla.; brothers, Perry Schamaun of Las Vegas, Nev., and Wayne Schamaun of Oakland, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 120 N. Maple St., Eaton, with the Rev. Thomas H. Maxedon Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton, with military graveside honors.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, 220 E. Main St., and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Richard Settles Sr.
Richard Settles Sr., 81, of Aukerman Creek Road, Eaton, died Saturday, Dec. 11, at his home.
Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Madison County, Ky., he was the son of Molly Robinson. Mr. Settles was a U.S. Navy veteran, and retired from Dayton Walther Corp. in 1987 after 35 years.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Settles of Eaton; three sons, Richard Settles Jr. of Germantown, Ronald Settles of Tennessee and Roy Settles of Kentucky; two daughters, Patricia Byrd and Sandra Suggs, both of Eaton; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Virgil Settles of Berea, Ky.; five half brothers, Earl Robinson and James Robinson, both of Germantown, Willie Robinson of West Carrollton, Vernon Robinson and Vincent Robinson, both of Kentucky; two half sisters, Elva Lamb and Lillie Robinson, both of Kentucky.
Graveside services were Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Gratis, was in charge of arrangements.
Eunice J. Barker
Eunice J. Barker, 66, of Eaton, died Sunday morning, Dec. 12, following a brief illness.
Born Nov. 30, 1933, in New Paris, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret (Booher) Smith.
She married Clifford W. Barker on Sept. 21, 1952, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1997.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Rita Barker of Beavercreek, Robert and Donna Barker of Hamilton; grandchildren, Samantha, Shaun, Robert, Michael, Brett and Clifford Barker; brothers, Gilbert Smith of Lynn, Ind., and Ralph Smith of New Madison; and a sister, Grace Hahn of Arcanum.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, 3377 U.S. 35, between West Alexandria and Eaton, with the Rev. Fred Hill officiating. Burial will be in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

Edith B. Langevin
Edith B. Langevin, 95, of Eaton, formerly of New Miami, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 11, at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Eaton.
Born April 16, 1904, at Brookville, she was the daughter of the late Anson Edward and Amanda (Brown) Walker. She retired from Champion Paper Company in Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Langevin, in 1974; brothers, Harry Walker, in 1909, and Wilbert J. "Midge" Walker, in 1973; sisters, Elizabeth Bayliss, in 1965, and Kathryn Bacon, in 1998.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur W. "Bud" and Maxine Walker of Eaton; a sister, Helen M. Lawton of Dayton; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Edith M. Wates
Edith M. Wates, 88, of Somerville, died Monday, Dec. 13, at Westover Retirement Community in Hamilton.
Born May 5, 1911, in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Suman) Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Wates, whom she married April 4, 1931; a brother, Roy Thomas; and a sister, Ruby Russelo.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Paul Hill, Shirley and Robert Andrews, Sandra and Carl Palechek, all of Hamilton, Donna R. and Kenneth Parks of Darrtown; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, 249 N. Main St., Camden. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at Somerville United Methodist Church in Somerville, with the Rev. George Witmer and the Rev. John H.H. Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Fairmound Cemetery, West Elkton.

Dorothy J. Guethlen
Dorothy Jane Guethlen, 56, died Thursday, Dec. 9, at Brookhaven Nursing Center in Brookville.
She was a student in the Vandalia-Butler school system for 12 years.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John D. Guethlen, in 1983; and grandmother, Gertrude Heenan, in 1999.
Survivors include her parents, John F. and Donna Guethlen of Lake Lakengren, Eaton; a sister, Susan and husband David Seitz of Beavercreek; a nephew, Craig and wife Lisa Seitz of Englewood and their children, Sara and David; two nieces, Amy and husband David Pennetti and their daughter, Katie of Cincinnati and Jennifer Seitz of Cincinnati; aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. James Gravitt and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Guethlen.
Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 13, at Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia, with the Rev. Ronald Hajarian officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Myrtle L. Holmes
Myrtle Loretta Holmes, 87, of 736 Vermont Ave., Portsmouth, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 2, at her home after a short illness.
Born Oct. 16, 1912, in Eaton, she was the daughter of Clarence L. and Pearl Viola Mae (Thomas) Hartrum. She was a 1932 graduate of Eaton High School.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Wendell Holmes.
Survivors include 11 sons; four daughters; two stepsons; 55 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara (Hartrum) Noble of Tacoma, Wash.; and a brother, Marion T. Hartrum of Dayton.
A memorial service was held in Chesapeake, Va.
