Joseph T. Freedman
Joseph T. "Joe" Freedman, 83, of North Commerce Street, Lewisburg, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 13, at Heartland of Eaton, where he had been a resident for two months.
Born Aug. 21, 1916, in Catlettsburg, Ky., he was the son of Julius and Lena (Fish) Freedman. He was a 1934 graduate of Ashland (Ky.) High School. He was a former U.S. Army Air Corps major, serving during World War II with the 303rd Bomb Group, and was stationed in England for three and a half years.
In 1945, Mr. Freedman purchased the Frey Department Store in Lewisburg, which became known as Freedman's Department Store. The store closed in 1993.
He was an active Lewisburg civic leader, serving 20 years on the Preble County Children's Services Board; Lewisburg School Board for eight years; Preble County and Lewisburg Historical Societies; past secretary of the Lewisburg Volunteer Firemen's Dependent Fund Board.
Mr. Freedman had also served as past commander of American Legion Post #213 in Lewisburg; was a member of the DAV of Lewisburg; Ohio State Patrol Auxiliary for 20 years; was past director of Peoples Banking Co. of Lewisburg and Verona; past chairman of the board of First National Bank of Southwestern Ohio, Lewisburg and Verona branches.
He was also a member of the Lewisburg Chamber of Commerce; Masonic Lodge for 50 years; B'nai B'rith Lodge of Ashland, Ohio; Temple of Israel of Dayton; and was an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sylvia Levine, in 1999, and Rosemary Cohen, in 1975; and a grandson, Matthew Tilton, in 1980.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, May "Jill" (Noble) Freedman, whom in married in England; sons and daughter-in-law, Vaughn Freedman of Lewisburg, Richard and Teri Freedman of Gilroy, Calif.; a daughter, Susan Golshani of Pleasant City, Ohio; a brother, Harold Freedman of Ashland, Ky.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Chris Tilton, Heather Grace, Misty Grant, Marnie Paterson, Dana Schwab, Greg Freedman, Lindsay Freedman and Robby Freedman; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Sunday, Oct. 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lewisburg, with the Rev. James Lehman and Dr. Bruce Fetter officiating. Full military honors were provided by the Preble County Honor Guard. Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Ancil Fields
Ancil "Bud" Fields, 68, of 2861 Liberty St., Radcliff, Ky., died Monday, Oct. 11, at the VA Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
Born Oct. 6, 1931, in Breathitt County, Ky., he was the son of Joseph and Sinda (Spencer) Fields. He was a 1952 graduate of Eaton High School, and was a command sergeant major in the U.S. Army, retiring after 30 years of service. He then worked for the U.S. Civil Service for 11 years. Mr. Fields was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, and was a member of Grand Lodge of Masons, F&AM of West Point, Ky.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jennifer Fields; his parents; sisters, Naomi Uhrig and Ida Mae Johnson; and half sisters, Mary Ellen Fultz and Nannie Gabbard.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Marjorie (Hockett) Fields; four sons, Jeffrey Fields of Rineyville, Ky., Jonathan Fields of Yuba City, Calif., Jerrold Fields of Radcliff, Ky., and Jack Fields of Columbia, Tenn.; two daughters, Janna Martinez of Columbus, Ga., and Jayne Stewart of Louisville, Ky.
Also surviving are a brother, Liberty Fields of Wabash, Ind.; a sister, Bertha Ebersole of Eldorado; a half sister, Sinda Spencer of Eaton; 13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family. The Family Funeral Care, Louisville, Ky., was in charge of arrangements. Arrangements were announced by Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the Animal Shelter-Humane Society.
Roy E. Williams
Roy E. Williams, 89, of Eaton, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Eaton.
Born Sept. 11, 1910, in Preble County, he was the son of Lester and Dora (Creech) Williams. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and had farmed in the Preble County area. He was employed as a truck driver by Camden Ready Mix until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elinor (Spitler) Williams, whom he married July 2, 1952, in Camden; and a great-granddaughter, Angela Chaney.
Survivors include a daughter, Dixie Shepherd of Eaton; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 15, at R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, Camden. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.
Richard T. Cottle
Richard T. Cottle, 39, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Carlisle and Pitsburg, Ohio, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 7, at his home.
He was born Jan. 25, 1960, in Middletown. Mr. Cottle worked for the Circus-Circus Motel/Casino in Las Vegas. He had served in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents, June (Ramey) and Walter Clark of Lewisburg, Richard M. and Barbara Cottle of North Ft. Myers, Fla.; children, Helen Cottle of Columbus, Ryan Tracy Cottle and Chad Cottle, both of Kentucky; a sister, Toni Lynn Long of Pitsburg, Ohio.
Also surviving are his maternal grandmother, Lois Pennwell of Miamisburg; stepbrothers, Walter Clark Jr. of Germantown and Mike Wall of Rock Hill, S.C.; stepsisters, Sheila Weidel of West Carrollton and Pam Withrow of Carlisle; an aunt, Freda Ferrell of Middletown; and uncles, Jack Ramey of Miamisburg and James Kirby Ramey of Waynesville.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Lewisburg Missionary Baptist Church, Lewisburg, with Pastor George Pennington officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria. Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.
Thomas L. Wynne
Thomas L. Wynne, 82, of Eaton, died Thursday, Oct. 14, at his home.
Born May 30, 1917, in Pocasset, Okla., he was the son of Robert P. and Elizabeth (Boydston) Wynne. Formerly of Texas, he had lived in Preble County since 1961. Mr. Wynne retired in 1977 from Withrow Motor Sales in Eaton. He was a member of the Trail Riders Cycle Club; Woodmen of the World; and the First Presbyterian Church in Eaton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola A. (Laughter) Wynne, in 1998; a daughter, Ann Planck, in 1996; grandsons, James Darrell and Stephen Thomas Wynne, in 1984; sisters, Bess Harris, Beulah Atkisson and Elsie VanVliet; and brothers, Will Wynne and Infant Wynne.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Hunt of Eaton, Mary Wynne of Seattle, Wash., Marjorie and Woodrow Grinstead of Tacoma, Wash., Julie and Warren Hoel of Lillington, N.C.; a son, Robert S. Wynne of Eaton; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends was held at the family residence, 1870 Eaton-Lewisburg Road, on Sunday, Oct. 17. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

W. Amel Owen
W. Amel Owen, 85, formerly of Eaton and Preble County, died Thursday, Oct. 14, at Maria Joseph Home in Dayton after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell M. Owen, in 1969; a nephew, Ronald D. Owen, in 1975; and a sister-in-law, Mary G. Owen, in 1995.
He is survived by a nephew, Roger Owen of Eaton.
Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were announced by Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel.

Earsie M. MacElwee
Earsie May MacElwee, 86, died Friday, Oct. 15, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born March 18, 1913, in Berea, Ky., she was the daughter of William and Ora (Gabbard) Flinchum. She married Thomas MacElwee on Oct. 21, 1967, in Maryland, and he preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Mable Bindwall; one brother, Luther Flinchum; and one sister, Gladys Hayes.
Survivors include two children, Boyd Bowman of West Alexandria, and Alberta Deaton of Beattyville, Ky.; 28 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Flinchum of Watertown, N.Y.; and one sister, Opal Howard of Eaton.
Graveside services were Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Dayton National Cemetery, Dayton, with the Rev. Doug Bottles officiating. R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, Camden, was in charge of arrangements.
Neva V. Stiver
Neva V. Stiver, 86, of Germantown, died Thursday, Oct. 7, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident Aug. 22.
Born April 25, 1913, near West Alexandria, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Mamie H. (Mikesell) Gardner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter B. Stiver; a brother, Paul Gardner; and a sister, Treva Lipscomb.
Survivors include three sons, Eugene "Sonny" Stiver, Don Ray Stiver, both of Germantown, and Danny Joe Stiver of West Carrollton; a daughter, Martha Ann Hewitt of Germantown; two sisters, Esther Boyd of Germantown and Betty Jo Goad of West Alexandria; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 11, at Arpp & Root Funeral Home, Germantown, with Pastor Wesley Stiver officiating. Burial was in Twin Valley Cemetery.
Dr. Mary K. Helz
Dr. Mary Stradley (Krise) Helz, 95, died Sunday, Oct. 10, at Waverly, Ohio.
Born April 13, 1904, she was the daughter of Will A. and May (Stradley) Krise. A 1922 graduate of Lewisburg High School, she received her undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, and graduate degrees from Ohio State University and the University of Pittsburgh.
She had been on the medical staff at Penn State University; State College, Pa.; and had been chief of staff at the medical facility at Waverly, Ohio. She was the founder of the Family Planning Clinic of Pike County.
From the honorary Scientific Society, Sigma Chi (OSU), she received an award in 1932 for medical research. She was the first woman to have full membership in the Sigma Chi Medical Society. She received the very coveted Heard Award, and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Society. On the campus of OSU is Stradley Hall, given by a member of her extended family.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Helz of Longmont, Colo.; three grandchildren, Janet Morrell and Diane Englirth, both of Longmont, Colo., and Glen Morrell of the U.S. Army.
Her body was given to Ohio State University Medical school for research.
Stanley L. Stump
Stanley L. Stump of Olathe, Kan., died Thursday, Oct. 14.
The son of Junior M. and Betty June Stump, he was born and reared on Preble-Darke County Line Road. He graduated from Twin Valley North High School in 1968. He moved to Kansas 25 years ago, and worked for Sprint Telephone.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother, Betty June Stump of Preble-Darke County Line Road; his wife, Susan; children, Douglas and Stacy; grandchildren, Michael, Hanna and Emily of Olathe, Kan.; sisters, Sandy, Cindy and Cheryl; and a brother, Steve Stump.
Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 18, in Olathe, Kan.
