Elizabeth Link
Elizabeth Link, 82, of Camden, died Monday, Jan. 3, at Heartland of Eaton.
Born March 29, 1917, she was the daughter of Benjamin R. and Gladys Macy (Poe) Wood. She owned and operated Cherokee Campgrounds in Barbau, Mich., for 15 years. She married Frederick M.E. Link on Oct. 27, 1934, in Hamilton, and he preceded her in death.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Aaron, Robert, Paul and Jerald Wood; and one sister, Eva Wells.
Survivors include two sons, William Link of Camden and Fredrick Wayne (Joyce) Link of Barbau, Mich.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin and Benny Wood, both of Florida; and two sisters, Jewel Pabst and Charlotte Mehling, both of Hamilton.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 7, at R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Greg Jackson officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.

Marilyn J. Baughman
Marilyn Jean Baughman, 72, of West Alexandria, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Heartland of Eaton.
She was born Aug. 17, 1927, in Preble County and was a lifelong resident of Lanier Township. She was a retired factory worker and had worked at McCall's Printing Co. for 17 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Enterprise.
Survivors include her mother, Lela (Campbell) Baughman; a brother, Gary (Evalena) Baughman of New Lebanon; a sister-in-law, Joan Baughman of Belle Glade, Fla.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Baughman, in 1966; and a brother, Wayne Baughman, in 1968.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 8, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Enterprise, with the Rev. Randy Rau officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Helen M. Fields
Helen Marie Fields, 65, of New Paris, died Wednesday night, Dec. 29, 1999, at the Dayton Heart Hospital.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Barksdale of Dayton; and a cousin, Janet McBee of Phillipsburg.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Fairmount Cemetery, Camden. American Cremation Services, Dayton, is in charge of arrangements.
Margaret C. Meier
Margaret C. Meier, 94, of 1409 Williams Pkwy., Eaton, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Greenbriar Nursing Center.
A native and lifelong resident of Preble County, she was born May 30, 1905, the daughter of the late Thomas and Cora (Hines) Markey. She was a bookkeeper, clerk and medical assistant, and had been employed by Flory Coal & Ice Company, Miller's Coal & Supply Company, Campbell's Drug Store, Rodefeld's and Dr. Clayton.
Mrs. Meier was a member of Visitation Catholic Church, vice president of the Eaton Business and Profession Women's Club, St. Ann's Sodality, Home Garden Club, Preble County Extension, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, American Legion Auxiliary, and was active in organizing the Preble County Senior Citizens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brien M. Meier, on Sept. 17, 1987; an infant sister, Grace Markey; and three grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Tom Hoskins of Eaton; a granddaughter and her husband, Heidi and Randy Flory; a grandson and his wife, Thomas and Robin Hoskins; three great-grandchildren; nieces and cousins.
A memorial Mass was held Saturday, Jan. 8, at Visitation Catholic Church, with Father J. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.

Edward J. Horack
Edward J. Horack, 79, of Eaton-Lewisburg Road, Lewisburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Southern Hills Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
Born Sept. 24, 1920, in Delia, Kan., he was the son of Ignatius and Veronica (Hejtmanek) Horack, who came to America from Czechoslovakia. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from McCall's in Dayton after 37 years of service.
He was a faithful member of the Lewisburg Church of God for 26 years, where he was Sunday school superintendent, and held many offices and duties at the church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lula K. (Brewer) Horack, in 1989; a sister, Rose Horak; and a brother, Rudy Horak.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth E. and Jacqueline Horack of Antioch, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Velma J. Pitts and Jeraldine Hutchison, both of Dayton; two brothers, Al Horack of Bakersfield, Calif., and Bennie Horak of Delia, Kan.; three sisters, Irene Collet of Washington, Emily Dodge of Delia, Kan., and Ester Weiner of Rossville, Kan.; two grandchildren, Blake Horack and Brandy Artz; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 8, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Linda Evans and the Rev. James Hazelwood officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.
Elba L. Long
Elba L. Long, 81, of Eaton, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 6, at Governor Harris Homestead after an extended illness.
Born Feb. 24, 1918, in Wisemantown, Ky., she was the daughter of Ernest J. and Edna (Williams) Reynolds. She retired from Leland Electric in Dayton and moved to Eaton in 1992. She had attended the United Christian Center in Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Long, in 1978; a daughter, Naida June Sampson, in 1986; three brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include three brothers, Ernest C. Reynolds of Eaton, Ezra T. Reynolds of Horton, Kan., and W. Elrige Reynolds of New Madison; two sisters, Evelyn Collins of Eaton and Edith Bailey of Middletown; and a grandson, Noah Jesse Sampson of Eaton.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 10, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with Sister Doris Swartz officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.

Helen M. Rurode
Helen M. Rurode, 82, of McCabe Street, Eaton, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 7, at Franciscan Medical Center in Dayton.
Born Aug. 5, 1917, in Preble County, she was the daughter of James F. and Elsie Mae (Brower) Sullivan. She was a graduate of Monroe High School, a member of Visitation Catholic Church and St. Ann's Sodality.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl J. Rurode, in 1994; and a stepdaughter, Bette Jean Cooper, in 1988.
Survivors include a son, James A. Rurode of Eaton; a daughter, Sandra E. Schiml of West Alexandria; a sister, D. Lucille Landis of West Alexandria; a special friend, Howard D. Hall.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, Patricia Ann Webb, Ann Marie Kern, Teresa Suzanne Shannon and Laura Kay Olsen; six great-grandchildren; Maria Suzanne Kern, Marlee Ann Kern, Wendell Schiml Webb, Brittany Marie Olsen, Lindsey Nicole Olsen and Nicolas Olsen; five step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Visitation Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas J. Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Herman York
Herman York, 86, of Gratis-Enterprise Road, West Alexandria, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 7, at Middletown Hospital.
Born July 19, 1913, in Ashland, Ky., he was the son of Clarence and Margaret (Lewis) York. He retired from Armco Steel in 1976 after 28 years, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Gratis United Methodist Church and the Gratis Odd Fellows Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Evelyn York; a son, John (Lora) York of Gratis; a daughter, Pat Izor of Farmersville; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a twin brother, Hubert York of Ashland, Ky.; and a sister, Helen Ruth Jobe of Ashland, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, Charles Izor.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 10, at Gratis United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ted Cano officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis.

Myrtle L. Shumaker
Myrtle L. Shumaker, 85, of Eaton, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Eaton.
Born June 17, 1914, in Moorsville, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Bertha (Davis) Wrightsman. She had lived most of her life in Preble County, except for 16 years when she lived in Minster, Ohio. She retired from Inland Manufacturing, Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen H. Shumaker, on Dec. 19, 1989; brothers, Leonard and Loran Wrightsman; and a half brother, Frank Frame.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Lutz of Eaton; a granddaughter, Marty Jo Hayes; a grandson, Donnie Lutz; two great-grandchildren; a half brother, William Frame of Mt. Olive, Ky.; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

Ruby Covington
Ruby Covington, 83, of New Lebanon, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at Kettering Memorial Hospital in Kettering.
Born Feb. 7, 1916, in Scott County, Ky., she was the daughter of Rufus and Stella Wasson. She retired from New Lebanon schools in 1976 where she had worked as a cashier in the cafeteria. Mrs. Covington was still working for Dixie High School, where she has sold admission tickets to football and basketball games since 1965. She also worked as a housekeeper.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 1964; her parents; and two brothers, Ralph Wasson and Joe Wasson.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Jack tobias of Eaton, Debbie and Ron Miller of New Lebanon; five grandchildren, Todd "Chris" Tobias of Billings, Mont., Tadd Tobias of San Francisco, Calif., Barbie Dooley of Verona, Shawn Miller and Tracie (Jed) Deneski, all of New Lebanon; four great-grandchildren, Chris Dooley, Cody Dooley, Cory Dooley, all of Verona, and Madison Deneski of New Lebanon; two sisters, Lottie Wiley of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Gladys Sherer of Fairfield, Fla.; nieces and nephews; and many extended family members.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria.

William F. Marquis
William F. Marquis, retired army captain, died Monday, Jan. 10, at his home in El Paso, Texas.
He was the son of Margaret and Ted Marquis, who owned Marquis Pharmacy in West Alexandria many years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Jean (Crouse) Marquis; daughters, Cathy and Debra; a son, William; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Burial will be at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
Esther A. Penland
Esther A. Penland, 86, formerly of South Washington Street, New Paris, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at Governor Harris Homestead in Eaton after an extended illness.
Born April 17, 1913, in Crafton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Orville Benton and Holly Edith (Reid) King. She was a 1931 graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and a 1935 graduate of Miami University.
Mrs. Penland retired in 1979 after 20 years as a fifth grade teacher in the New Paris school district. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in New Paris, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild; was a former member of the Tuesday Club and the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearl L. Penland, in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky P. Carlson of Asheville, N.C.; and a grandson, Adam Carlson of Canon City, Colo.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, 109 W. Main St., with the Rev. Michael Evans officiating. Burial will be in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.

Fred Scherbauer
Fred "Mike" Scherbauer, 84, of New Paris, died Sunday, Jan. 9, at his home.
Born Sept. 30, 1915, in Dayton, he was the son of the late John and Louise (Dorchal) Scherbauer. He was a 40-year bar owner/operator in Dayton; was an inspector for the Montgomery County Engineer's Office; a a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; a member of St. John's Catholic Church in New Paris; Knights of Columbus; and was a member of the Democrat Party.
He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Betty N. (Neikamp) Scherbauer; a son and daughter-in-law, Fred "Bill" and Christa Scherbauer of Dayton; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and George Wehner of Wilmington, Sue and David B. Marshall of New Paris; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at St. John's Catholic Church, North Spring Street, New Paris, with the Rev. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial will be in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris. The family will receive friends from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, 109 W. Main St.

Joseph L. Lowman
Joseph L. Lowman, 79, of Eaton, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born June 9, 1920, in Preble County, he was the son of the late Robert A. and Lillie Edith (Everding) Lowman. He was a 1938 graduate of Eaton High School, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He retired in 1975 as a senior designer at Frigidaire-GM in Dayton after 35 years of service.
Mr. Lowman was a member of VFW Post #8066; Destroyer Escort Sailors Association; Eaton Church of the Visitation; past Grand Knight, former District Deputy and member of the Knights of Columbus; TOM Club of Dayton; and Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Marie (Buckley) Lowman, in 1999; and two brothers, Raymond O. Lowman, in 1954, and Ralph E. Lowman, in 1965.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce G. and Dawn E. Lowman of Huber Heights, John R. and Carolyn M. Lowman, James R. and Rebecca A. Lowman, all of Eaton, Michael J. and Kimberley A. Lowman of Vandalia.
Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Steven T. and Sharon T. Lowman, John W. (Michelle) Lowman, Timothy A. Lowman, Lori M. Lowman, Christina Ann Marie (Brian) Baker, Theresa A. (Darrin) Kisling, James W. Lowman, Michele L. (Phillip) Frech, Amy J. (Aaron) Rike, Natasha L. (David) Baker, Michael J. Lowman II, Nathan C. Lowman.
Also, two step-grandchildren, Jeff L. and Christina R. Fisher; nine great-grandchildren, Dustin Lowman, Justin, Jarrod Craig and Ashlee Baker, Scottie Williams, Victoria Lowman, Caleb A. Kisling, Austin and Shelby Frech; two step-great-grandchildren, Chelsea Frech and Jessica Kisling; and six nieces.
Funeral Mass was Monday, Jan. 17, at the Church of the Visitation, Eaton, with the Rev. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. A Rosary service was conducted Sunday evening at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel following visitation.

Mary E. Marion
Mary Elizabeth (Landis) Marion, 77, of Farmersville, died Monday, Jan. 10.
Born April 13, 1922, in Montgomery County, she was the daughter of Charles T. and Emma (Bowser) Landis. She was a retired cook with the New Lebanon Board of Education.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gene Marion; and twin great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jennifer Morton.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Floyd E. Marion Sr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Cathy Marion of Eaton, Raymond J. and Carol Marion of Covington, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jason and wife Steffanie, Matthew and wife Rachel, Mileah, Brandon and wife Stephanie, Mike and Michelle.
Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Austin, Jacob and Samantha; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Bill Fogle of New Lebanon, Shirley and Paul McDonald of Farmersville; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Maxine Landis of Englewood; nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Lynn Thornton.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 14, at Rogers Funeral Home, New Lebanon, followed by burial in Eversole Cemetery.
