Alice M. Markus
Alice M. Markus, 90, of Eaton, formerly of Farmersville, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 11, at Governor Harris Homestead following a lengthy illness.
Born July 23, 1909, in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Albert and Rose Belle (Bruner) Schultz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard H. Markus, in 1954; and a son, Jack Markus, in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Billie Izor of New Lebanon; a daughter-in-law, June Markus Spurlock of Germantown; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Friday, Jan. 14, at Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria. Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Emergency Squad, or to Hospice of Dayton/Middletown.

Floyd L. Short
Floyd L. Short, 55, of 13168 Olive Branch Road, Hagerstown, Ind., died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 11, at his home.
Born April 23, 1944, in Eaton, he was the son of Floyd and Daisy (Sandlin) Short. He had lived in Richmond and Centerville before moving to the Hagerstown area in 1993. Mr. Short was a retired employee of the Richmond Street Department.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Short; one daughter, Janita McClain of Milton, Ind.; three sons, Larry Short of Economy, Ind., J.L. Short of Milton, Ind., and Edward Short of Springfield; eight grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters, Marie McDermitt of Richmond, Ind., Bonnie Phillips of Brooksville, Fla., and Elaine Morris of West Alexandria; four brothers, Bruce Sandlin and Jeff Sandlin, both of New Hope, Melvin Sandlin of Eaton and Steve Sandlin of Richmond, Ind.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 15, at Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown, Ind., with the Rev. Don McKinney officiating. Cremation followed.
Memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind., or to the Alzheimer's Association.

Phyllis J. Bottorff
Phyllis J. Bottorff, 71, of Xenia, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 10, at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia.
Born Dec. 13, 1928, in Dayton, she was the daughter of John Warren and Priscilla (Adams) Jennings. She was a member of Faith Community United Methodist Church; a 50-year member of Aldora Chapter #262, Order of the Eastern Star; National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters, Inc.; and Decorative Artists Guild of Southwestern Ohio.
Survivors include her husband, Neil E. Bottorff, whom she married Aug. 28, 1950; a son and his fiancee, Thomas N. Bottorff of Xenia and Jozette Hale; a sister, Mary Lou Block of Eaton; and a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. John and Patricia Jennings of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 14, at Neeld Funeral Home, Xenia, with the Rev. Robert Warner officiating. Eastern Star services were conducted Thursday evening during visitation. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Gardens.

Rosemary Cornett
Rosemary Cornett, 69, of West Spring Street, Eaton, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 11, at Grandview Hospital in Dayton after an extended illness.
Born April 5, 1930, in Madison County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Riley P. and Viola M. (Sheets) Pitsinger. She was a 1948 graduate of Eaton High School and a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Eaton.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Adolphus Gibson, in 1973.
Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Gale Cornett; a sister, Rhuie I. Curtis of Camden; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Janet Gallant of Eaton.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 14, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. The VFW Auxiliary conducted services during visitation on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Fund-Preble County Unit.

Rev. Harold R. Garland
The Rev. Harold R. Garland, 84, of Dayton, died Tuesday, Jan. 4.
Born Aug. 29, 1915, in West Virginia, he was the son of Boyd and Carrie Garland, and grew up in the Cumberland, Md., area. "Brother G" was a retired minister in the Southern Baptist Church, having pastored churches in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia and Ohio. In Ohio, he pastored in Eaton, Hamilton, Carlisle and Dayton, and was pastor of the First Brethren Church of West Alexandria for many years. His ministerial degrees were from such places as Moody Bible Institute.
He drove a school bus for West Alexandria, Lakota Schools in Hamilton and Jones Mills, Pa. He had also been the Preble County Building Inspector in Eaton and a security guard at Miami University in Middletown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mildred M. Garland; four daughters and sons-in-law, Gail Fudge of Union, Ohio, Rita Garland, Carol and Andy Andrews, all of Dayton, Karen and Meredith Goldie of Carlisle, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sheryl Garland of Rapid City, S.D.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Virginia Shank of Cumberland, Md., and Marcella Mock of Anderson, Ind.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 14, at North Dayton Baptist Church, with Pastors Randy Chestnut, Don McMurry, Ron Murrill and Pete Fee officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery near West Alexandria. George C. Martin Funeral Home, Northridge Chapel, Dayton, was in charge of arrangements.

Betty J. Ketron
Betty Jean Ketron, 67, of New Paris, died Saturday, Jan. 15, at Grandview Hospital in Dayton.
She was born April 18, 1932, in Chattanooga, Tenn. She had worked at Phillips Recording Company in Richmond, Ind., for 20 years, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in New Paris.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara J. Ketron, in 1992; a son, Charles E. Ketron, in 1999; and grandchildren, Brenda Ketron and Michael Springer.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Robert Lee Ketron; a son, William L. Ketron of Albany, Ind.; daughters, Belinda Shockney of Fountain City, Ind., and Patty A. Springer of Eldorado; a sister, Charlotte Green of Cincinnati; a brother, Sonny Bloom of Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Maggie A. Ketron of New Paris; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the First Baptist Church, New Paris, with the Rev. Reggie Osborne officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris. Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Ray Glander
Ray Glander, 85, of Eaton, died Sunday, Jan. 16, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born Nov. 14, 1914, in Preble County, he was the son of Benjamin and Susan (Ozias) Glander. He was a U.S. Army veteran; a member of Salem Lutheran Church in West Alexandria; James E. Ryan Post #322 American Legion; and King Hiram Lodge #88, F&AM.
He is survived by cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, W. Charlene Glander, in 1996; a brother, Ralph Glander; and a sister, Rhina Ginn.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Daniel Snider officiating. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Lutheran Church.

Robert M. Broderick
Robert M. Broderick, 73, of Eaton, died Sunday, Jan. 16, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton
Born Jan. 3, 1927, in Miami, Fla., he was the son of the late William Corton and Iva Elizabeth (Bell) Broderick. He had lived in the Eaton area for the past 30 years. Mr. Broderick received his B.S. degree in 1949 from the Chicago Institute of Technology, and retired in 1986 from Raytheon Company in Dayton after 35 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; a 28-year member and past board member of the Eaton Country Club; was awarded Man of the Year 1972-73 from the Dayton Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Lydia G. (Geyer) Broderick; daughters and sons-in-law, Laura J. Hall of Eaton, Linda and Barry Ashley, Janet and Tracy Vandermark, all of Cincinnati; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and JoAnn Broderick of Pennsylvania, Mike and Julie Broderick, and David Broderick, all of Cincinnati.
Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Evelyn P. Geyer of Eaton; 16 grandchildren, Laura, Jaymee, Elizabeth, Matt, Connie, Chrisy, Stephanie, Eric, Tim, Bryan, Jason, Jessica, Jennifer, Matthew, Zachary and Amanda; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, 220 E. Main St.

Earl Brandly
Earl Brandly, 80, of Yost Road, Eaton, died Monday morning, Jan. 17, at Heartland of Eaton after a brief illness.
Born Nov. 26, 1919, in Butler County, he was the son of Henry W. and Elsie D. (Burkhardt) Brandly. He was a 1938 graduate of Dixon High School, retired from Parker Hannifin Corp. in Eaton in 1982, and was a retired farmer. Mr. Brandly was a member of the Eaton Church of the Brethren.
He was preceded in death by a son, R. Kent Brandly, in 1988; and a brother, Raymond Brandly, in 1997.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Maxine (Brubaker) Brandly; a son, Dale Brandly of Tipp City; a daughter, Delores Marker of West Alexandria; a sister, Marie B. Flora of Eaton; four grandchildren, Sharon Manning, Karen Shore, Wesley Marker and Kellee Marker; and two great-grandchildren, Lacey Crabtree and Simon Shore.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Eaton Church of the Brethren, 1407 N. Barron St., Eaton, with the Rev. Greg Hyre officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, 220 E. Main St., Eaton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Church of the Brethren.

Mary E. Kitchel
Mary Emily Kitchel, 91, formerly of 7393 Ohio 122 West, Eaton, died Monday, Jan. 17, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born April 12, 1908, in Richmond, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Wallace B. and Mabel C. (Reid) Simmons, and had lived in Preble County all her life. She was a 1926 graduate of Jackson High School. Mrs. Kitchel attended Campbellstown United Church of Christ, and was the last living charter member of the Preble County DAR.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. William Kitchel, on Sept. 20, 1992.
Survivors include daughters, Julia Statzer Smith of New Paris and Carolyn Kitchel Cabaniss of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Eaton, with the Rev. Richard E. Van Tine and Lillian M. Gillespie officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Ind. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Lester S. Baer
Lester S. Baer, 81, of Fairfield, Ohio, formerly of Eaton, died Monday, Jan. 17.
He was a retired truck driver from Refiners Transport and had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 165, a past commander of Post 377, a Teamster and a Kentucky Colonel.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Eileen Baer; children, Christina Shroyer of Mason, J.T. Wilson of Dayton, William Baer of Tucson, Ariz., and Brenda Jones of Crossville, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Wasson.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 21, at Hodapp Funeral Home, West Chester, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, or to the American Heart Association.

H. Willard Cox
H. Willard Cox, 94, of Eaton, died Monday, Jan. 17, at Heartland of Eaton.
Born Jan. 2, 1906, in Jackson Township (Preble County), he was the son of the late Horace D. and Helen E. (Moore) Cox. He was a 1924 graduate of Jackson High School and attended DePaul University. He was a retired Jackson Township farm owner and operator. Mr. Cox was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific area, where he was wounded on June 8, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of Campbellstown United Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Cox; sisters, Ruth L. Davidson and D. Catherine Barber.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, W. Marie (Frame) Cox; sons, Joseph A. Cox of Cincinnati, John W. Cox of Caddo, Texas; five grandsons; and five great-grandsons.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Campbellstown United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Lillian Gillespie officiating. Burial was in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Ind., at the convenience of the family. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Brandly
Ernest Brandly, 80, formerly of College Corner, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Grandview Hospital in Dayton after a short illness. He had lived in Hamilton prior to moving to College Corner, and had been a resident of Heartland of Eaton since October.
Born July 10, 1919, in Preble County, he was the son of Roy E. and Mary G. (VanAusdall) Brandley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a farmer.
Survivors include two brothers, Elden Brandley of Boston, Ind., and Darrell Brandly of Columbus; and a sister, Lela Brandly of Vandalia.
Graveside services were Monday, Jan. 24, at College Corner Cemetery, College Corner, Ind., with the Rev. Ken Barton officiating. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

George J. Steele Jr.
George J. Steele Jr., 79, of New Paris, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Heartland of Eaton.
Born Oct. 5, 1920, in West Manchester, he was the son of the late George W. Sr. and Bessie (Hefelfinger) Steele. He retired in 1985 after 20 years at Fireproof Door in Liberty, Ind., and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Albert; and brothers, Robert, Garland and Merlin F. Steele.
Survivors include a brother, Kenneth Steele of New Paris; a special niece, Barbara J. (Jerry) Westbrook of New Paris; special nephews, Donald E. Steele of New Paris, David L. (Susan) Steele of Eaton and James A. (Robin) Steele of West Manchester; several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 21, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Reggie Osborne officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris, with military honors by the Preble County Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Northwest Emergency Squad.

Glenna L. Barnheiser
Glenna L. Barnheiser, 92, formerly of Lewisburg, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 19, at North Western Medical Center in Chicago, Ill., after an extended illness.
Born July 9, 1907, in Darke County, she was the daughter of Harry E. and Susie (Weaver) Leiter. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church; and Ideal Chapter #293, Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Barnheiser, in 1984.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce L. and Julia Barnheiser of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kent and Ruth Barnheiser of Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 22, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.

Carolyn L. Corwin
Carolyn L. Corwin, 52, of Troy, died Thursday morning, Jan. 20, at Hospice of Dayton.
She was born Dec. 1, 1947, in Richmond, Ind., and was a graduate of Jackson High School in Preble County. Mrs. Corwin was employed with Copeland Corp., Sidney.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Corwin.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kelly Oberg of Troy; her mother, Mildred Louise (Butler) Corwin of Eaton; a grandson, Christian Oberg; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Pat Corwin of Centerville, Ind., Tom and Sharon Corwin of Eaton.
Funeral services were Sunday, Jan. 23, at Baird Funeral Home, Troy, with the Rev. Jeffery W. Blair officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
