Russell L. Wermer
Russell L. Wermer, 83, a resident of the Eaton area for the past 13 years, died Thursday, Jan. 20, at Reid Hospital, Richmond, Ind.
Born Sept. 8, 1916, in Lima, he was the son of the late Gustave and Dulcie May (Harden) Wermer. He retired in 1978 after 41 years in management at the A&P Grocery in Van Wert and Lima, Ohio, and Angola, Ind.
Mr. Wermer was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; a 54-year member of American Legion, Isaac Post #178 at Van Wert; 1968 post commander; 40 & 8 Past Chapeau; a member of Sugar Valley United Methodist Church and was active in the church choir; and was active with youth baseball in Van Wert, Ohio, and Angola, Ind., for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Sharon Louise and Teresa Ann Wermer, in 1968.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Thelma May (Hoghe) Wermer; a daughter and son-in-law, Lucinda Faye and Robert Coveney of Eaton; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Lowell and Amy Wermer of Medina; brothers, Glenn Wermer of Van Wert and Clarence Wermer of Bremerton, Wash.; five grandchildren, Scarlet and Andrew Coveney, Shannon Wermer, Tyler Coveney and Lauryn Wermer.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 22, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Ken Barton officiating. Graveside services and burial followed in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, with full military honors by the Van Wert Post of the American Legion.

Mary E. Marion
Mary Elizabeth (Landis) Marion, 77, of Farmersville, died Monday, Jan. 10.
Born April 13, 1922, in Montgomery County, she was the daughter of Charles T. and Emma (Bowser) Landis. She was a retired cook with the New Lebanon Board of Education.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gene Marion; and twin great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jennifer Marion.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Floyd E. Marion Sr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Cathy Marion of Eaton, Raymond J. and Carol Marion of Covington, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jason and wife Steffanie, Matthew and wife Rachel, Mileah, Brandon and wife Stephanie, Mike and Michelle.
Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Austin, Jacob and Samantha; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Bill Fogle of New Lebanon, Shirley and Paul McDonald of Farmersville; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Maxine Landis of Englewood; nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Lynn Thornton.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 14, at Rogers Funeral Home, New Lebanon, followed by burial in Eversole Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Women's Work Organization at the Eversole Church of the Brethren, where she was a member.
Frances G. Macher
Frances G. Macher, 80, of West Alexandria, formerly of Dayton, died Thursday, Jan. 20, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Born Nov. 9, 1919, in New York, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Carmen and Frances (Macaluce) Misuraca. She moved to the Dayton area in 1957 and to West Alexandria in 1988. Mrs. Macher retired in 1976 as a department supervisor for Elder-Beerman department stores, and was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John F. Macher Sr., in 1977; a son, John F. Macher Jr., in 1989; brothers, Laurie and Joe Misuraca; and sisters, Kay Sequin and Mamie Samele.
Survivors include sons, Robert J. Macher and wife Sue of West Alexandria, and Bill J. Macher of Troy; grandchildren, Elizabeth S. Wampler, Kimberly L. Henson, Jason M. Macher and Tarin M. Macher; sisters, Mary Rosati of Eaton and Rose Castellano of Sherman, Conn.; and a sister-in-law, Barb Misuraca of Winsted, Conn.
Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 28, at Maloney Funeral Home, Winsted, Conn., followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery there. Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, is in charge of local arrangements.
Ruth K. Davies
Ruth Klein Davies, 92, of Hamilton, formerly of Camden, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Berkley Square Retirement Community in Hamilton.
She was born Aug. 3, 1907, in Montgomery County. Mrs. Davies was an elementary teacher in the Preble County schools and Fairfield City schools, retiring after 29 years of service.
She married Robert O. Davies on June 12, 1936, and he preceded her in death in April 1993.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Rebecca Davies of Hamilton; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard and Sharon Davies of Reno, Nev.; granddaughters, Dr. Anne Davies of Ft. Myers, Fla., Susan Davies of Cincinnati and Jenny Hoy of Sparks, Nev.; grandson, Robert Davies of Boise, Idaho; great-granddaughters, Jayme and MacKenzie Hoy; a sister, Nettie Shilt of Dayton; seven nephews and one niece.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Avance Funeral Home, Fairfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary W. Schuetz
Mary W. Schuetz, 96, of Weist Road, Eaton, died Thursday, Jan. 20, at Heritage Regency in Richmond, Ind.
Born July 17, 1903, in Pendelton County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late William and Sally (Casey) Wiggins. She was elected in 1929 to a four-year term as county court clerk of Pendelton County, Ky.
In the spring of 1933, she married T. Ambrose Schuetz. She and her husband moved to Preble County in 1934.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964; brothers, William Wiggins Jr. and John Wiggins; sisters, Josephine McKinney, Margaret Murphy and Mildred Wood.
Survivors include sons, Thomas D. Schuetz of Eaton, Joseph R. "Bob" Schuetz of Milwaukee, Wis., and James E. Schuetz of Sanford, Mich.; daughters, Mary Rita Hardin of Decatur, Ga., and Judith Ann Schuetz of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was Monday, Jan. 24, at Visitation Catholic Church, Eaton, with the Rev. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. A Rosary Service was conducted at the funeral home visitation Sunday evening. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Gordon W. Dunlope
Gordon W. Dunlope, 90, of Eaton, died Thursday, Jan. 20, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born Sept. 14, 1909, in Eaton, he was the son of the late Harry and Charlotte (Heppes) Dunlope, and had lived in Eaton and Preble County all his life. He was a 1927 graduate of Eaton High School, and was co-owner of Dunlope Sales Company. He was a member of The Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucile (Coffman) Dunlope, on Dec. 25, 1994; and a son, Ramon D. Dunlope, in June 1968.
Survivors include two daughters, Virginia D. Fogg of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and Anita J. Watts of Eaton; nine grandchildren, Linda Fogg, Kathy Fogg, Ray Fogg Jr., Anne Dunlope, Susan Dunlope, Randy Watts, Greg Watts, Jeff Watts and Mike Watts; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Watts, Charlotte Watts, April Watts and Charles Watts.
Funeral services were Sunday, Jan. 23, at The Church of Christ, Eaton, with the Rev. Jeff Hill officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.

Annabelle Simpkins
Annabelle Simpkins, 91, formerly of Dorothy Lane, Kettering, died Sunday, Jan. 23, at Maria-Joseph Center in Dayton.
Born Sept. 9, 1908, in Sidell, Ill., she was the daughter of Walter and Stella (McNees) Welch. She had been a sales clerk at Rike's department store for many years, and was a member of David's United Church of Christ in Kettering.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Simpkins, in 1991, and Cecil Brubaker, in 1957; her parents; and a son, James Hooke, in 1987.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John "Jack" and Suzanne Hooke of Hollywood, Fla., seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margie Cayce of Kettering and Norma Ziegler of Sattelie, Fla.; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, is in charge of arrangements.

Georgia A. McCurry
Georgia Ann McCurry, 87, formerly of Eaton, died Sunday morning, Jan. 23, at Woodland Country Manor in Somerville, where she had been a resident since September 1997.
Born Feb. 12, 1912, in Lincoln County, Ky., she was the daughter of Baker and Williebelle (Francis) Walls. She had lived in Preble County since 1965.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Marvin McCurry, in 1965; and a daughter, Margaret I. Lester, in 1965.
Survivors include two daughters. M. Judy Finley of Eaton and Annabelle Morgan of California; a sister, Sadie Cheatham of Lexington, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Evergreen Cemetery in Waverly, Ohio. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Harley E. Pemberton
Harley E. Pemberton, 88, of Quaker Trace Road, West Alexandria, died Sunday morning, Jan. 23, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind., following a lengthy illness.
Born July 10, 1911, in New Carlisle, he was the son of the late James and Dora (Massey) Pemberton. He retired from the Harris-Seybold Company in Dayton, and was a member of the North Unit of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Eaton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Elbert, Everette, Homer, Chester and Emmet Pemberton; and a sister, Helen Lambert.
Survivors include his children, Lois Ann Stapleton of Richmond, Ind., Glen Allen Pemberton of Eaton, Luther Herman Pemberton of West Alexandria and Bobbie Jean Muncy of Livingston, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Clara Wright of Fairborn.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Brother Mark Hoffman officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Lowell D. King
Lowell Dean King, 62, of New Paris-Gettysburg Road, New Paris, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, in Naples, Fla., after a sudden illness.
Born Oct. 22, 1937, in Richmond, Ind., he was the son of Frank I. and Florence B. (Pelle) King. He had lived in the New Paris area all his life. Mr. King was a member of the Heavy Equipment Union of Operating Engineers-Local #103 of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of New Paris.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jesse Paul Hayes, in 1989.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Jean (Berry) King; two daughters, Gayle Miller of Richmond, Ind., and Lisa Jordan of New Paris; a half brother, Pierce M. Markey of Centerville, Ind.; a half sister, Charlene Captain of New Paris; six grandchildren; and two aunts, Mildred Izor of Eaton and Catherine Monahan of El Paso, Texas.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Evans officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.

John D. Shaffer
John D. Shaffer, 88, of New Paris, died Thursday, Jan. 20, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born July 17, 1911, in Jacksonville, Fla., he was the son of the late Augustus and Josephine Shaffer, and had lived all his life in New Paris. He was self-employed in farming, trucking and the sawmill business.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary G. (Petry) Shaffer, in October 1997 after 66 1/2 years of marriage; a grandson, Randon Lee Shaffer; a half brother; and a half sister.
Survivors include five sons, Loren (Jean) Shaffer of Detour, Mich., Donald (Dixie) Shaffer, Leland (Helen) Shafer, John Jr. (LeeAnne) Shaffer and Allen Shaffer, all of New Paris; a daughter, Wanda (Robert J.) Smith of New Paris; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 25, at the Eaton Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Greg A. Hyre officiating. Burial was in Wares Chapel Cemetery, West Manchester. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.
Joyce L. Fleming
Joyce L. Fleming, 68, of West Alexandria, died Sunday, Jan. 23, at Grandview Hospital in Dayton.
Born June 30, 1931, in Basin, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late Berdine and Melda (Whitt) Reed, and had lived in Preble County since 1952. She retired from Parker Hannifin Corp., Eaton, and was a member of Ivy Lane Baptist Church, West Alexandria.
She was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Dale Fleming; and a brother, Ezra Reed.
Survivors include nine daughters, Glenna Cunningham of Somerville, Carole McPheron of Middletown, Mary Reed of Hamilton, Judy Austin of Camden, Barbara Wright of Eaton, Susan Galliher of West Alexandria, Grace Ann Fleming of Savannah, Ga., Laura Kasserman of West Alexandria and Bonnie Crabtree of Eaton; a son, Brian David Fleming of Camden.
Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; her former husband, Glen O. Fleming of Middletown; sisters, June Reggi, JoAnn Huffman and Bonnie Reed-Smith, all of Beckley, W. Va.; a brother, Dwight Reed of Beckley, W. Va.; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Eaton, with the Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Morning Sun.

Waughletta R. Young
Waughletta R. Young, 89, of New Lebanon, died Monday morning, Jan. 24, following a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 16, 1910, in Lawrence County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Bob and Tennessee (Moore) Jordan. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church of Blackberry City, W. Va.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, John M. Hamby and Okey Young; and sons, Bob and Clarence Hamby.
Survivors include a son, John R. Hamby of New Lebanon; a stepson, Phillip G. Young of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, 3377 U.S. 35 (between Eaton and West Alexandria), West Alexandria, with Pastor Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Preble Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
James E. Thompson
James E. Thompson, 78, of Beavercreek, died Saturday, Jan. 22, at Hospice of Dayton.
He was a graduate of Wilbur Wright High School, and retired from NCR and Mead Corp. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the European Theater 10th Armored Tiger Division.
He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, past master and current treasurer of Beaver Valley Lodge #753; Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Antioch Shrine; member of VFW #8312; past president of the Beavercreek Optimist Club; a member of American Legion #763, DAV Harold J. Hursh Chapter; and a volunteer at the Greene County Career Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Hazel (Smith) Thompson; and a sister, Betty Mae Thompson, on June 14, 1999.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy (Brecht) Thompson; two daughters and son-in-law, Jennifer and Roger Kirk of Xenia, and Laura Hatfield of Woodbine, Ky.; a sister, Neveda Tipton of Eaton.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Matthew (Michele) Kirk of Jamestown, Rob Kirk of Xenia, James (Marcia) Livingston of Dayton, Tammy (Doug) Braden of West Carrollton; great-grandsons, Nathan and Noah Kirk; step-great-grandchildren, Kristy and Daniel Mangrum; a nephew, Wayne (Beverly) Tipton of Eaton; a niece, Connie (Gary) Christian of Camden; numerous other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Tobias Funeral Home, Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Road, Beavercreek. VFW, Blue Lodge and Ring services were conducted following viewing Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Patrick E. Lahey
Patrick Edward Lahey, 54, of April Lane, Murfreesboro, Tenn., died Saturday, Jan. 22, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
Born Dec. 27, 1945, he was the son of Robert F. and Ruth Lahey. The family lived in Mishicot, Wis., and later moved to Eaton in July 1960. He graduated from Eaton High School in 1964. He was employed by the Flevor-Daniels Co. in Murfreesboro.
Survivors include his parents, Robert F. and Ruth Lahey of Eaton; his wife, Sue (Monce) Lahey, whom he married Jan. 28, 1967; a son, Matthew Lahey of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Michael R. (Cathy) Lahey of Cincinnati; a sister, Maxine (Norman) Smuck of Paoli, Ind.; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins, as well as special boyhood friends, John Reis of Manitowac, Wis., and Art and Phyllis Smith of Eaton.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro, Tenn., with the Rev. Mark Calvert-Rosenberger officiating. Cremation followed.
