Richard P. Gade
Richard P. Gade, 73, of Eaton, died Friday, March 7, 1997, at his home after an extended illness.
Born April 26, 1923, in Piqua, he was the son of the late Raymond and Lydia (Shirley) Gade, and had lived in Preble County since 1946. Mr. Gade started the Eaton Taxi Service in the 1940s, and was the owner of the former Gade Furniture Store and Gade Nursing Home. He attended the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Harris) Gade; three sons, Randy Gade of West Palm Beach, Fla., Richard E. Gade and Michael Gade, both of Eaton; six grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley Konze of San Antonio, Texas, Glenna Goodwin of Florida and Penny Haug of New Jersey; nieces and nephews.
A brother, Robert Gade, is deceased.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 11, at the First Baptist Church, Eaton, with the Rev. Fred Hill officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry W. Boyes
Jerry W. Boyes, 62, of 11th Street, Richmond, Ind., died Friday, March 7, 1997, at his home.
Born April 14, 1934, in Madison, Wis., he was the son of the late Everett W. and Mary (Sumner) Boyes. He was owner of the Photo Copy Center in Richmond. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, David A. and Angela Boyes, and Jeffrey L. Boyes, all of Richmond, Ind.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori J. and Joseph Mullins of Madison, Wis.; a sister, Jean R. Kliment of Madison, Wis.; and 12 grandchildren, including Jerome S. Capps, whom he raised.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Boyes.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 11, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Pastor Raymond Rothwell officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Herbert H. Herbst
Herbert H. Herbst, 94, formerly of Eaton-Lewisburg Road, Eaton, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at Manor Care in Miamisburg.
Born Aug. 30, 1902, in Preble County, he was the son of John and Mary Elizabeth (Williams) Herbst. He had lived in Preble County most of his life, was a retired farmer and former owner of Acton's Meat Market. He was a member of the Preble County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Sylvia (Stockslager) Herbst; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Jane and Alan Thomas of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Marguerite Sanders of Eaton; a grandson, Brad Thomas; and a brother-in-law, Roy Stockslager of New Lebanon.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett E. Herbst, in 1923, and Fred W. Herbst, in 1954; two sisters, Nora Aten, in 1978, and Bertha H. Peters, in 1981.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. James W. Whitley officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the funeral home.

Edith C. Horsey
Edith Coffman Horsey, 89, formerly of Kettering, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at Shiloh Springs Care Center in Trotwood.
Born April 4, 1907, in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of William Henry and Laura Emma (Daffler) Coffman. She was a 1925 graduate of Lewisburg Union High School, and retired after 36 years at NCR. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dayton.
Mrs. Horsey was preceded in death by her husband, G. Berkley Horsey, in 1954; a brother, Charles Irvin Coffman, in 1979; and two sisters, Maude I. Newman, in 1990, and Eva Duke, in 1993.
Survivors include a brother, William J. Coffman of Lewisburg; nephews, Damon Newman of Dayton, Steve Coffman of Lewisburg, Larry and Todd Coffman, both of Brookville; nieces, Dolores Felfoldi of Dayton, Patricia Williams of West Chester, Cheryl Ann Coffman of Columbia, S.C., Debra Burris of Richmond, Ind., and Joyce Smyer of Lewisburg; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. James N. Lehman officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Olive D. Stonecash
Olive D. Stonecash, 92, formerly of Eaton, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, in Albuquerque, N.M.
Born July 29, 1904, in Eaton, she was raised by her mother, Ellen (Toney) and stepfather, George Shaver. She had lived in Eaton most of her life, and had worked at Shaver's Ice Cream Factory.
She was married to Albert Rust and he died in 1960; she then married Peter John Stonecash and he died in 1980.
Survivors include one son, Lowell Harris of Albuquerque, N.M.; three stepsons, Thomas Stonecash of Louisville, Ky., Calvin Stonecash and Robert Stonecash, both of Eaton; two stepdaughters, Marjorie Updegraff of Richmond, Ind., and Jeannine Edwards of Oklahoma.
Also surviving are three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Elbert "Pop" Druley of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and nieces.
She was also preceded in death by a stepson, Jerry Rust; and a brother, Vierl E. Druley.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Martin Peacock officiating. Burial will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
John C. Davis
John Calvin Davis, 75, of Camden, died early Tuesday morning, March 18, 1997, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Born March 11, 1922, in Bond, Ky., he was the son of Robert and Bessie (Steele) Davis. He was a former employee of the U.S. Forestry Service as a sign maker, and a former employee of Square D in Oxford, retiring Dec. 31, 1984, after 11 years of service.
Mr. Davis was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Camden Church of God, where he formerly served on the pastor's council, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Camden.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Thelma (Hillard) Davis, whom he married March 20, 1942, in Moores Creek, Ky.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Sharon Davis of Camden, Tony and Cindy Davis of Washington, D.C., Wendell and Janice Davis of Eaton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lowana and Bill Wyatt of London, Ky., Joyce and James C. Nelson, Debra and David Wilder, all of Camden.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Lester Davis of Connersville, Ind.; and three sisters, Emma Howard, Rebecca Carter and Mae Gaines, all of East Bernstadt, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wes Davis; and a sister, Sophia Berry.
Funeral services were Friday, March 21, at the Camden Church of God, with the Rev. Marvin Hocker officiating. R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, Camden, was in charge of arrangements.
Annabelle M. Doty
Annabelle Mae Doty, 89, formerly of Camden, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, at Heartland of Eaton.
Born Aug. 28, 1907, in Fairhaven, she was the daughter of James and Bessie (Halderman) Beckett. She married Edward Z. Doty in 1926 in Eaton. Together they operated a local restaurant, Doty's Lunch, from 1948 to 1950.
She was a member of the Camden United Methodist Church for 56 years, and a member of Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and Frank Mato of Middletown; two grandsons, Joe Mato of Eaton and Eddie Doty of Reno, Nev.; three granddaughters, Ann, Paula and Debbie Doty; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Chester Doty; three sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services were Friday, March 21, at R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Jackie Marshall officiating. Burial was in Fairhaven Cemetery, Fairhaven.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Camden United Methodist Church.
Harriet L. Furnas
Harriet L. Furnas, 84, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mt. Vernon. She was a former resident of the Eaton area, having resided at Lakengren from 1974 to 1990.
Born July 25, 1912, in Van Wert County, she was the daughter of the late Perry J. and Mabel (Wright) Allen. She was a graduate of Ridge High School in Van Wert County, and was a retired secretary from St. Regis Paper Company in Troy.
She was a member of Sugar Valley United Methodist Church in Eaton, and a member of Order of Eastern Star, Sharon Chapter, West Milton.
She married Roger Furnas on May 27, 1938, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1996. Her parents and a sister are also deceased.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheila M. Carity of Troy; two sons, Walter A. Furnas of Delaware, Ohio, and James B. Furnas of Xenia; one sister, Agnes McKeddie of Kingman, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Saturday, March 22, at Bridges-Stocker Funeral Home, Covington, with the Rev. Steve Malanowski officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Covington.

Peter J. Schmitz
Peter J. "Jerry" Schmitz, 64, of Lewisburg, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, at his home following a two-year illness.
Born Jan. 30, 1933, in Miamisburg, he was the son of the late Henry L. and Catherine C. (Wagner) Schmitz, and had lived in Preble County since 1969. He was retired from Schmitz Plumbing in Miamisburg. Mr. Schmitz was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of Visitation Catholic Church in Eaton, a volunteer fireman for the City of Miamisburg and a 4-H advisor.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie M. (Vincent) Schmitz; three daughters, Kathleen and Buff Anspaugh, Madeline Schmitz and Jeanette Schmitz; two sons, William Schmitz and Patrick Schmitz; four grandchildren, Blake, Alicia, Katie and Anna-Marie.
Also surviving are two brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Florine Schmitz, Gene and Betty Schmitz; godparents, Helen and Bill Joly Sr.; mother- and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Vincent; sisters- and brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A sister, Dolores Schmitz, is deceased.
Funeral Mass was Saturday, March 22, at Visitation Catholic Church, Eaton, with the Rev. Ralph J. Lawrence, the Rev. David Vincent and the Rev. Charles Caserta officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.
Kenneth E. Knox
Kenneth Edward Knox, 44, of Morning Sun, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997.
He was born Aug. 27, 1952, in Hamilton, and had worked at Butler Landmark for 15 years. Mr. Knox was a member of the Amateur Radio Club of Oxford and was known as AA8KW on the airways; and was a member of the Lighthouse of God in New Miami.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah (Adams) Knox, whom he married Aug. 8, 1981; four sons, Kevin and wife Kelly Knox, Brady Knox, all of Hamilton, Scott Jordan of Camden and Michael Knox of Morning Sun; one daughter, Kristy Jordan of Germantown; three grandchildren, Joshua Dunaway, Jonathan Jordan and Desirae Jordan, all of Camden.
Also surviving are his father, Kenneth Knox of Hamilton; mother- and father-in-law, Harold L. and Ruby Adams of Somerville; two sisters, Brenda Pritt and Teresa Powell, both of Hamilton; brothers-in-law, Darrell L. and wife Tonya Adams of Morning Sun, Douglass E. and wife Gae Adams of Camden, Dennis Adams of Somerville, William J. and wife Angela Adams of College Corner; nieces and nephews, great-niece and great-nephew.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor (Buttery) Knox; maternal grandparents, Ed and Ida Buttery; paternal grandparents, Pleasant and Agnus Knox; and a niece, Chasity Turner.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 22, at R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Paul Williams and the Rev. Gary Witt officiating. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery near Morning Sun.
