Monty B. Crain
Monty Blake Crain, 35, of Hamilton, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, in Fairview, Tenn.
He was born Dec. 9, 1961, in Hamilton, and graduated from Taft High School there. He had been employed in home construction in Pompano Beach, Fla.
Survivors include his father, Joseph W. Crain of Hamilton; a son, Joshua Scott Crain of Hamilton; two stepchildren, Jamie and Miles Mobley, both of Hamilton; two sisters, Gail Bowling of London, Ky., and Janet (Randy) Strohacker of Eaton.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline (Steele) Crain.
Funeral services were Friday, April 18, at Webb-Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton, with Pastor Lowell D. Spencer officiating. Burial was in Concord Cemetery.
Bernadine R. Woydziak
Bernadine Rose Mangen Woydziak, 94, formerly of 9995 Conover Road, Versailles, died Tuesday morning, April 15, 1997, at Versailles Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 15, 1902, in Burkettsville, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Marguerite (Goubeau) Cordonnier, and had spent her adult life in the Frenchtown and Versailles areas. She was a homemaker and farmed all her adult life.
She was married to LeRoy Mangen on Feb. 1, 1921, and he died April 7, 1936. She then married Joseph Woydziak on April 20, 1948, and he died June 27, 1965.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Mangen of Troy, George Mangen and John Mangen, both of Versailles; four daughters, Audrey Grieshop McEldowney of Rossburg, Ohio, Terentia "Terry" Zumberger of Maplewood, Ohio, Juanita (Robert) Hake of Eaton and Sister Maureen Mangen, CPPS of Hartford City, Ind.
Also surviving are three stepdaughters, Alvera Tucker of Vallejo, Calif., Mary Alice Kramer of Arcanum and Joyce (Wilbert) Luthman of Russia, Ohio; 45 grandchildren; 36 step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sister Terentia Cordonnier, CPPS of Dayton.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; six stepchildren; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; five brothers; and a great-grandson.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, April 19, at St. Denis Catholic Church, Versailles. Burial was in Holy Family Catholic Church Cemetery, Frenchtown, Ohio. Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, was in charge of arrangements.
Elmer O. Crawford
Elmer O. Crawford, 79, of Eaton, died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
He was born June 25, 1917, in Swain, Ark. Mr. Crawford was employed as a machinist at Baldwin, Lima, Hamilton, was a bus driver for West Elkton School for many years and was the marshal of West Elkton during the 1950s. He was a member of the West Side Baptist Church in Hamilton.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Ruth (Humphries) Crawford, whom he married Sept. 3, 1936, in Latonia, Ky.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald R. and Beatrice Crawford of Middletown, Robert G. and Marilyn Crawford of Somerville, James E. and Madlyn Crawford of Ft. Wright, Ky.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Gail and William Doran of Camden, Judith Ann and William Rogers of Mary Esther, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Marge Crawford of Hamilton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Odetta and James Grimm, Felda Diesh, Leora and Bob Gill, all of Hamilton, and Jean Crawford of Fairfield; 16 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Rose Ella (Morgan) Crawford; two brothers, Raymond and Wesley Crawford; and two sisters, Helen and Bernice Crawford.
Funeral services were Friday, April 18, at R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Greg Jackson and the Rev. Ruben Cabinalles officiating. Burial was in Fairmound Cemetery, West Elkton.
Memorial contributions may be made to West Elkton United Methodist Church in West Elkton or to the First Southern Baptist Church in Camden.
Max E. Lee
Max E. Lee, 68, of 4154 Ohio 726, Eldorado, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at his home after an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Preble County, he was born Nov. 18, 1928, in Monroe Township, the son of Thomas and Golda E. (Wehrley) Lee. He was a Monroe Township farmer and truck driver. Mr. Lee was a member of Price's Creek Church of the Brethren and the National Trail FFA Alumni.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Geneva (Poffenberger) Lee; mother-in-law, Mary Poffenberger of Eldorado; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Kay Lee of Mogadore, Ohio, Lloyd and Loretta Lee of Eaton, David and Tonya Lee of Eldorado; two sisters, Velma Taylor of New Carlisle and Vera McRoberts of West Manchester; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 19, at Price's Creek Church of the Brethren, West Manchester, with the Rev. David D. Shetler officiating. Burial was in Wares Chapel Cemetery near West Manchester. Bussard-Barnes-Vaniman Funeral Home-Eldorado Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred I. Paxton
Mildred I. (Keller) Paxton, 82, of Camden, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at her home.
Born May 23, 1914, in Butler County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ada (Williams) Keller.
She married James L. Paxton on July 25, 1952, and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Rowland D. Mann of Trenton; three daughters, Jane Heiger of Centerville, Ohio, Barbara Elleman of Cincinnati and Joyce Schaffer of Torrence, Calif.; one sister, Ada Parks of Dayton; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Six brothers, Hubert, Harry, Floyd, George, Wayne and Darrell Keller are also deceased.
Private funeral services were held at the convenience of the family at R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Jackie Marshall officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.

Callie Durham
Callie Durham, 67, of Madison Township, Dayton, died Friday morning, April 18, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton after an extended illness.
Born Dec. 20, 1929, in Keith (Harlan County), Ky., she was the daughter of Cleveland and Mary (Farley) Muncy. She had lived in Madison Township since 1951.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Larry "Ken" Durham; two sons, Larry D. Durham and James E. Durham, both of Trotwood; two daughters, Lora Durham and Connie Oliver, both of Trotwood; four sisters, Janie Arthur of Harlan, Ky., Lorene Muncy of Wallins, Ky., Killie Wilson of Loyall, Ky., and Rosie Marlow of Grays Knob, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard Muncy, in 1971, and Henry Muncy, in 1996.
Funeral services were Monday, April 21, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, followed by burial in Preble Memory Gardens.
Clarence "C.O." Gates
Clarence "C.O." Gates, 93, of Dayton, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at Miami Valley Hospital.
He was born July 28, 1903, in Preble County, the oldest of eight children. His parents, James Elwood and Isabelle (Martin) Gates, preceded him in death.
Mr. Gates operated a garage in Eaton many years ago and worked for General Motors for many years. He was a member of the Dayton Area Visually Impaired Persons Club.
Survivors include his wife, Flonnie; one sister, Martha Jane Lundgren of San Francisco, Calif.; one brother, John Gates of Eldorado; two nieces and six nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Gates Swartz, Elsie Gates, Blanche Gates Long and Florence Gates Waldeen; and one brother, Martin Gates.
Funeral services were at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were by Barclay Funeral Home, Kettering.

Irene Whitt
Irene Whitt, 78, of Hamilton, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997, at Mercy Progressive Care in Hamilton.
Born March 30, 1919, in Fairhaven, she was the daughter of Roy Armond and Leah Stanley Witherby Pitsinger. She was educated in the Camden Public Schools. Mrs. Whitt was employed as a paper sorter for Champion International Paper Co. for 11 years, and was a member of Allison Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Orlie E. Whitt, whom she married Oct. 25, 1946, in Paintsville, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail I. and Elbert Baggett; four sisters, Elizabeth Woosley of Camden, Roseanne Yother of Cincinnati, Dorothy (William) Walker of Moses Lake, Wash., and Norma Jean (Jack) Gambill of Miami, Fla.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Earl and Bruce Pitsinger; and two sisters, Helen Schmidlin and Juanita Frost; and a special "other" daughter, Denise E. Frazier Riley.
Funeral services were Friday, April 25, at Webb-Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton, with Pastor Kenneth Dugas officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Burial Park, Hamilton.

Bertha Duncan
Bertha "Aunt Bert" Duncan, 86, of Enterprise Road, West Alexandria, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born March 9, 1911, in Perry Township, she was the daughter of Jacob and Annie (Early) Cotterman. She had been employed by Boscul Co. of Dayton. Mrs. Duncan was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ingomar, a member of the Ingomar Mothers' Club, a past president of the West Alexandria Senior Citizens and a volunteer for the Miami Valley Lutheran Social Services.
Survivors include a sister, Esther Noe of Dayton; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Duncan, in 1981; five sisters, Mary Lantis, Clara Spidel, Lydia House, Stella Heavlin and Catherine Eby; and a brother, John Cotterman.
Funeral services were Monday, April 28, at St. John Lutheran Church in Ingomar, with the Rev. Larry Kettlehake officiating. Burial was in Twin Valley Cemetery, West Alexandria. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Stewart
Paul Stewart, 73, of New Paris, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Dayton.
Born Oct. 23, 1923, in New Paris, he was the son of John M. and Delpha (Flatter) Stewart. He was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson High School, and retired in 1986 after 44 years at Wayne Works in Richmond, Ind. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion in New Paris.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary E. (Farwig) Stewart; one son, John E. Stewart of Cincinnati; one daughter, Linda K. Stewart of New Paris; two sisters, Norma Langley of New Paris and Dorothy Cail of Eaton; three grandchildren, Brandy, Amy and Timothy Stewart; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Stewart, in 1992; three brothers, Dale M. Stewart in 1988, Leo L. Stewart in 1991, and Wayne M. Stewart in 1993; and one sister, Helen Stewart in 1926.
Funeral services were Monday, April 28, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. James Sizelove officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.
