G. Marcella Hickernell
G. Marcella (Thompson) Hickernell, 84, a resident of Wadsworth, Ohio, for the past 40 years, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997.
She was born in Dayton and was the former owner of Marcella's Beauty Shoppe in Dayton. She was active in Omicron Sigma Sorority and was a 50-year member of Gleaners Chapter #182, OES, West Alexandria. She was a leader in the Camp Fire Girls and the Methodist Youth Fellowship in Hillsdale, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; and daughters, Louise Elaine Hickernell and Patricia Ann Donese.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Beth; a daughter, Linda Saffles; grandchildren, Nicole Saffles, Robin Turner, Rachel Weekley, Steve Hickernell, Deb DeLuca and Doug Donese; five great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Nesbitt.
Graveside services were Saturday, June 21, at Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton, with Pastor John T. Powell officiating. Hilliard Cox Mullaney Funeral Home, Wadsworth, was in charge of arrangements.

Brunette L. Moss
Brunette Lovely Moss, 100, formerly of Dixon Township and Preble County Line Road, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at Heartland of Eaton after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 19, 1896, in Morgan County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Dora (Christian) Sexton and had lived in Preble County most of her life. She had been a factory worker for Williams Furniture Factory in Richmond, Ind.
Her first husband, Robert Lovely, died in 1950; and her second husband, Willard Moss, died in 1966.
Survivors include five daughters, Essie Lovely Hettinger, Ruth Gross and Mary Rieker, all of Eaton, Bessie Hartman of Richmond, Ind., and Quencetta Ross of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one son, Robert Lovely of Jupiter, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Ora Cook of Franklin; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Peters; two brothers, David Sexton and Cody Sexton; and two sisters, Ethel Hettinger and Naomi Miller.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 24, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. James W. Whitley officiating. Burial was in Concord Cemetery near Eaton.
Victor R. Hurley
Victor R. Hurley, 67, formerly of Somerville, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Westover Retirement Village where he was a resident. He had previously resided at Schroder Manor for 6 1/2 years.
Born Dec. 29, 1929, in New Miami (Butler County), he was the son of John and Bessie (Thomas) Hurley. He graduated from West Elkton High School in 1947. He was a supervisor at Fisher Body of Hamilton for 35 years, retiring in 1985, and had also farmed in the Butler County area for many years. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947-1951. Mr. Hurley was a 4-H leader for eight years and a member of Moose Lodge #36 since 1964.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Arlene Hurley of Somerville; one son, Carl Wayne Hurley of Somerville; one daughter, Cindy Lewis of Darrtown; four grandchildren, Eric, Sean and John Hurley and Nichole Lewis; one great-grandchild, Erin Marshall.
Also surviving are one sister, Jo (Robert) Hall of McGonigle; a half brother, Glen (Bonnie) Moore of Germantown, three half sisters, Cleo (Paul) Tiernan of Hamilton, Sylvia (Lloyd) Brown and Gladys Moore, both of Fresno, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a half brother, Carl; a half sister, Thelma; and son-in-law, J.G. Lewis.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, 249 N. Main St., Camden, with the Rev. William C. Brantingham officiating. The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. just prior to services on Wednesday. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis.

Bessie Michael
Bessie Michael, 102, formerly of Glenada Court, New Lebanon, died Monday, June 23, 1997, at Canterbury Care Center in New Lebanon.
Born Sept. 25, 1894, she was the daughter of David and Molly (Blosser) Bowman. She was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Michael was preceded in death by her husband, H. Roy Michael, in 1956.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Alvina Michael of Dayton, and Edison Michael of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Carl Fuls of Brookville; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Osa Foster of New Lebanon.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ruby Lindsey, in 1987; a granddaughter, Janet Michael; three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were Friday, June 27, at Rogers Funeral Home, New Lebanon, with a grandson, the Rev. Michael Lindsey of Seymour, Ind., officiating. Burial was in Trissel Cemetery.

Glen E. Miller
Glen E. Miller, 63, of Englewood, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, following an extended illness.
He was involved in residential development with G&K Investments, was a former partner of F&M Contractors, and a member of the Salem Old German Baptist Brethren Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice I. (Miller); a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Myra Miller of West Milton; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Gale Shoup of Vandalia; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Eldon Denlinger of Englewood; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Bonnie Miller of Clayton; grandchildren, Justin and Lance Miller, Mindy, Brandon, Casey and Kelley Shoup.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel P. and Alice (Eikenberry) Miller.
A prayer service was held Sunday, June 29, at Kindred Funeral Home, Englewood, followed by services at the Salem Old German Baptist Brethren Church, with the Home Brethren officiating. Burial was in Royal Oak Memorial Gardens, Brookville.
James H. Crye Sr.
James H. Crye Sr., 53, of West Manchester, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dayton.
He was born Oct. 29, 1943, in Marysville, Tenn. He was a truck driver for 30 years with Slay Transportation in Liberty, Ind., and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Mr. Crye was a member of the American Legion in New Paris and of Faith Tabernacle in Greenville.
Survivors include his wife, Ann (Combs) Crye; his father, Joe R. Crye of New Paris; four daughters, Jeanna Cooper of St. Petersburg, Fla., Dawn Troutwine of Columbus, Vicky Strohacker and Jamie Crye, both of West Manchester; two sons, James H. Crye Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Raymond Steck of West Manchester.
Also surviving are two brothers, Bob L. Crye and Larry O. Crye, both of New Paris; two sisters, Lona M. Street and Doris J. Darnell, both of Richmond, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; a special aunt, Elizabeth McDonald of Richmond, Ind.; and a special uncle, Maynard Crye of Marysville, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda B. (Williams) Crye, in 1994; and a brother, Joe Crye Jr.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 28, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Kevin E. Erickson officiating. Burial, with full military graveside services, was in Goshen Cemetery

Mary Evelyn James
Mary Evelyn James of Lewisburg died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at Greenwood Manor in Xenia.
Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of Everett and Louise M. (Hunter) Horlacher. She retired from Frigidaire in Dayton after 32 years, and was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Lewisburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick W. James, in 1988; and a brother, John Horlacher, in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Barnheiser of Lebanon; and two granddaughters, Beth Barnheiser of New Port Beach, Calif., and Amy Barnheiser of Loveland.
Funeral services were Monday, June 30, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Michael McDonald officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.
George D. Davisson
George D. Davisson, 79, of Lewisburg, died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born March 15, 1918, in West Manchester, he was the son of Frank F. and Oma Davisson. He retired in 1982 after 31 years at Federated Department Stores, had served on the Lewisburg Village Council and was zoning commissioner for several years.
Mr. Davisson was a 50-year member and past master of Libanus Lodge #80, F&AM; a 50-year member of Palmyra Chapter Royal Arch Masons; past patron of Ideal Chapter #293, OES; a 50-year member of Valley of Dayton, Scottish Rite; Antioch Temple of Dayton; and a past president of the Preble County Shrine Club. He was a longtime trustee chairman of Calvary United Methodist Church in Lewisburg, and had participated in a barbershop quartet in his earlier years.
Survivors include his wife, Berniece (Hoff) Davisson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Bonnie Davisson of Union, Doug and Jane Davisson of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, George F. Davisson, in 1962.
Funeral services were Monday, June 30, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. David O. Justis officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg. Masonic and Scottish Rite services were conducted Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewisburg Emergency Unit or to Calvary United Methodist Church.
Edith Runk
Edith Runk, 79, of Gambier, Ohio, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at her home following an extended illness.
Born May 24, 1918, in Burnside, Ky., she was the daughter of Harvey and Nannie (Blankenship) McKinney. She and her late husband had owned and operated the Eaton Flower and Cradle Shop. She moved to Gambier in 1993.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Runk; and her parents.
Survivors include two sons, E. Dean Runk of Norton Shores, Mich., and Robert D. Runk of Gambier; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will hold private services at a later date. Dowds Snyder Funeral Home, Gambier, was in charge of arrangements.
Samuel H. Schaffer
Samuel H. Schaffer, 77, of West Alexandria, died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born Nov. 5, 1919, in Logan County, Ohio, he was the son of Louis P. and Julia F. (Wilson) Schaffer. He was a retired security guard for the Masonic Temple in Dayton and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Wanda F. (Proffit) Schaffer; five sons, Sam Schaffer of Trotwood, Wayne H. Schaffer of Bremen, Ind., Michael L. Schaffer of Hanover, Pa., Paul F. Schaffer of New Lebanon and Mark Schaffer of Eldorado; two daughters, Alice F. Lutz and Ann K. Shumaker, both of West Alexandria; a brother, Ora Schaffer of Dayton; a sister, Myrtle Armstrong of Edon, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, 3377 U.S. 35, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Percy Miller officiating. Burial will be in Preble Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
