William J. Wilson Jr.
William J. Wilson Jr., 85, of New Lebanon, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at Harborside Care Center in New Lebanon. He was a former resident of Cleveland.
Born March 31, 1912, in Cleveland, he was the son of the late William J. Sr. and Sarah E. (Calvert) Wilson. He retired as a bus driver from the Brecksville (Ohio) Board of Education, had worked at Thompson Products and also sold Stanley Home Products.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Margaret (Preg) Wilson, whom he married Aug. 1, 1945; daughters and sons-in-law, Viola Glandorf of Cincinnati, Margaret "Peggy" and Robert Forbush of Cleveland, Elizabeth "Betty" and Rick McNinch of New Lebanon; a son and daughter-in-law, William Joseph and Sharon Wilson of Cleveland; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Everett Allen, and Jean Hall, all of Cleveland.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Geogge.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, 3377 U.S. 35 East, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Father Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery, Mayfield Heights, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Maynard A. Gross
Maynard Alan Gross, 47, of New Paris died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born June 26, 1950, in Cincinnati, he was the son of France and Berdie (Stewart) Gross. He was employed at Travel Center of America in Eaton.
Survivors include two brothers, Lee Gross of Milford and Billie Gross of Eaton; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Frankie and Maynard Berry, Myrtle and Robert Green, all of Cincinnati, Julidta and William Hauser of Eaton, Charlene and Larry King of Camden; and his girlfriend, Carla Flack of New Paris.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, George and Polly Gross, Yuli and Mollie Stewart; and a brother, Ronald Gross.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at R.C. Nein & Sons-Limber Funeral Home/Willard Moss Jr. Memorial Chapel, 249 N. Main St., Camden, with the Rev. Greg Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.
Mary G. Shaffer
Mary G. Shaffer, 85, of Pence-Shewman Road, Eldorado, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel.
Mae Reeder
Mae Reeder, 76, of Eaton, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, in Richmond, Ind.
Born May 27, 1921, in Middlesboro, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Dock and Laura Howerton. She was a member of the Eaton Church of God.
Survivors include children, June Reeder, Laura and Arnold Hunt, Jerry and Pat Reeder, all of Eaton, Carol and John Mustard of West Carrollton; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Matt Howerton, Maynard Howerton and Patt Howerton, all of Middletown, and David Howerton of Dayton; sisters, Georgia Clinard of New Lebanon and Dolly Marcus of Middlesboro, Ky.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Reeder.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Rogers Funeral Home, New Lebanon, with Pastor Irene Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Dr. Howard W. Heywood
Dr. Howard Wyatt Heywood, 82, of Oakwood, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997.
Born in Dayton, he was the only child of Frank and Laura (Wyatt) Heywood, both descendants of pioneer Preble County families. He graduated from Stivers High School, Ohio Wesleyan University and Northwestern University Medical School, and also studied at the Mayo Clinic.
He served three years as a flight surgeon in the 9th Air Force during World War II in the North African Desert Campaign, D-Day landings and the Battle of the Bulge.
Returning to Dayton in 1945, he practiced as a family physician in downtown Dayton for 35 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church, the American Medical Society, the Montgomery County Medical Society and was a charter member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jane; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura Jane and James Swaim of Centerville, Ohio, Sarah and Joe Kennedy of Torch Lake, Mich.; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Sara Heywood of Sheridan, Wyo.; two grandsons, Christopher and Andrew Overholser; two step-grandsons, Steven Swaim and Benjamin Fordahl.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Fairmont Presbyterian Church, 3705 Far Hills Ave., Kettering, with the Rev. Robert Wade officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Routsong Funeral Home, Oakwood, is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah E. Danzi
Sarah (Estes) Danzi, 78, formerly of Preble County, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Born Nov. 15, 1918, in Preble County, she was the daughter of Sidney and Mary (Bailey) Estes.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Dourson; a brother, Anthony Estes of Eaton; and two sisters, Martha Rudorf and Maudie Stillwell, both of Eaton.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, is in charge of arrangements.
Mary G. Shaffer
Mary Garnett Shaffer, 85, of Pence-Shewman Road, New Paris, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born March 27, 1912, in Nottoway County, Va., she was the daughter of Daniel Franklin and Anna (Shock) Petry. She was raised in the Upper Twin Old Order German Baptist faith and had lived in Preble County most of her life.
Survivors include her husband of 66 1/1 years, John D. Shaffer; sons and daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Lee Anne Shaffer, Allen Shaffer, Don and Dixie Shaffer, Leland and Helen Shaffer, all of New Paris, Loren and Joanie Shaffer of Detour, Mich.; daughter and son-in-law, Wanda L. and Robert J. Smith of New Paris; sisters, Bessie Deaton of Eaton and Lucille Lipps of New Paris; a brother, Daniel Petry of Gratis; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; one sister; and a grandson, Randon Lee Shaffer, in 1973.
Funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Eaton Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Greg A. Hyre officiating. Burial was in Wares Chapel Cemetery, West Manchester. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Regina M. Fisher
Regina M. Fisher, 76, of Eaton, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at Heartland of Eaton.
A native and lifelong resident of Preble County, she was born July 28, 1921, the daughter of the late William B. and Bertha F. (Foutz) Fisher. She retired after 40 years as an auction clerk for Kramer & Kramer Auctioneers. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Alice J. Fisher of Eaton; and several cousins.
Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 17, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with Dr. Phillip D. Malone officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Paul E. Heckman
Paul E. Heckman, 82, of Eaton, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born Jan. 23, 1915, in Lewisburg, he was the son of Abraham L. and Laura May (Everding) Heckman. He retired in 1973 from Sunshine Biscuit Co. in Dayton after 27 years, and was a retired Preble County farmer. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Zelma V. (Matheny) Heckman; daughters, Lurainia Mae Bosley of Indianapolis, Ind., and Bonnie Lou Hall of West Alexandria; sisters, Mildred Miller of Princess Ann, Md., and Cora Geeting of Florida; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary V. Rodeffer and Martha Cochran; brothers, Theodore, Martin, Hiram and William Heckman; and a granddaughter, Amber Lynn Hall.
Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 18, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Greg A. Hyre officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.

Ray E. Eikenberry
Ray Eugene Eikenberry, 82, of Lewisburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Westview Acres Care Center in Eaton.
Born Dec. 20, 1914, in Darke County, he was the son of Josiah and Mina (Waitman) Eikenberry. He retired in 1976 after 36 years at Inland in Dayton, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and POW in Germany. Mr. Eikenberry was a member of VFW Post #975 of Lewisburg, and a member of Potsdam Church of the Brethren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha M. (Brown) Eikenberry, in 1978; two brothers, Paul S. Eikenberry and Charles Eikenberry; three infant brothers; and a sister, Ruby Erbaugh.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte H. (Baker) Cahill Eikenberry; a daughter, Dianna Parris of New Paris; sisters, Mary Hamilton of Greenville, Nancy Smith of West Milton and Inis Booher of Florida; brothers, Herb Eikenberry of Union City, Ind., and Michael Eikenberry of Bethesda, Ohio; stepsons, Ronald L. Cahill of Dayton and John P. Cahill of Eaton; stepdaughter, Linda L. Enoch of Alexandria, Va.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 18, at Potsdam Church of the Brethren, Potsdam (Miami County), with the Rev. Robert Kurtz officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg. Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Harry J. Henderson
Harry J. Henderson, 51, of West Alexandria, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Hospice of Dayton.
He was born April 19, 1946, in Eaton, was a retired baler at General Motors, and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a former member of the Church of Christ in Eaton.
Survivors include two sons, John of Fairborn and Justin of West Alexandria, his mother, Lorene (Horn) Henderson of New Lebanon; a brother, Anthony of New Lebanon; and three grandchildren, Erica, Nicole and John Jr.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Henderson.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Rogers Funeral Home, New Lebanon, with the Rev. Terry Smith officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
