Charles O. Cannon
Charles O. Cannon, 82, of 65 Mid Drive, Richmond, Ind., died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Extendacare in Richmond after an extended illness.
Born July 17, 1915, in Blount County, Tenn., he was the son of Andrew and Sophia (Rhyne) Cannon. He had worked for International Harvester in Richmond for 22 years and was a self-employed carpenter. He had lived in Preble County for 20 years, moved to Crossville, Tenn., in 1971 and back to Richmond in 1978.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Victoria N. (Porter) Cannon; stepsons, James Dreaden of Centerville, Ind., and William Dreaden of Richmond, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Mayme Jurkat of Hoboken, N.J.; sisters, Unav Eidson and Gertrude Fulton, both of Maryville, Tenn., Bobbie Gray of Richmond, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.,
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene, Roy and Cicero Cannon.
Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 19, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Don Boyer officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.
Viola M. Creager
Viola M. Creager, 83, of Eaton, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind., after an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Preble County, she was born June 24, 1914, the daughter of the late Jacob Samuel and Ida May (Wertz). She was a member of Eaton Baptist Temple.
Her husband, Ray A. Creager, died July 23, 1976. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenton Driver; and a son, Larry Lee Creager.
Survivors include seven daughters, Doris Spurr of Enon, Vera Fudge, Sandy Renner and Darlene Dane, all of Eaton, Kay Hoops of Dayton, Joyce Smith of Pleasant Hill and Edith Biser of Celina; three sons, Ronald Creager, Tom Creager and Jerry Creager, all of Eaton; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Coning of Columbus and Jennie Carrier of Eaton; and one brother, Keith Driver of Eaton.
Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 19, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Edward L. Buchanan
Edward L. "Eddie-Buck" Buchanan, 62, of 202 W. Main St., New Paris, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 16, 1997, at Veterans Hospital in Dayton after an extended illness.
Born Nov. 20, 1934, in Preble County, he was the son of James W. and Emma Jane (Keehner) Buchanan. He was a 1952 graduate of Jefferson High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was owner and operator of Country Side Inn in New Paris from 1970-91, a tool designer for Buckeye Iron & Brass Tool Design for several years, and had worked for Flatley Roofing of New Paris.
Mr. Buchanan was a past service officer and member of Clarence Teaford Post #360 of New Paris, past service office of VFW Post #8066 in Eaton and past commander of AmVets #726 of Eldorado.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Gerrie (Burden) Buchanan; his mother, Emma Jane Flatley of New Paris; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Holly Buchanan of Brookville; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Jim Buchanan Carter of Cicero, Ind., Jamie and Mike Moore of New Paris; stepchildren, Michael and Barbara Tate of Alaska, Michelle and James Joyce of California and Robbie Tate of New Paris.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Jennifer, Jacob, Emma'lee, Shelby and Samuel Buchanan, Jade, Jayme and Buchanan Carter, Tara Ford and Cody Moore; step-grandchildren, Chuck Tate, Becky and Sam Equevilley, Andy and Sarah Rose Joyce, Shawna and Kevin Ebersole; step-great-grandchildren, Dusty Equevilley and Rachael Ebersole.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1955; a brother, James A. Buchanan, in 1991; and the children's mother, Beverly J. Snavley, in 1980.
Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 20, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with Chaplain Harry McCleary and the Rev. Don Jackson officiating. Burial, with full military graveside services, was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.

Alvin Smith
Alvin Smith, 85, of Centerville, Ind., formerly of Eaton, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, at Pinehurst Village in Centerville.
Born June 20, 1912, in Eubank, Ky., he was the son of Silas and Florna Belle (Ashley) Smith. He retired in 1976 from Penn Railroad after 34 years. Mr. Smith was a member of the Camden Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith C. Smith, in 1991; a grandson, Timothy Popham, in 1988; step-grandson, Herbert Ballinger Jr., in 1978; brothers, Herman Alfred and Willie Smith; sisters, Delphia Bartin, Effie Dick, Geneva Smith, Ina Young, Polly Ann Smith, Luvenie Smith and Vencie Smith.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Douglas L. Smith of Auburndale, Fla., Clifford David "Butch" and Kathleen Smith of West Alexandria; daughters and sons-in-law, Georgia Loraine "Sis" and John Powell of Lewisburg, Cheryl A. and Russell Popham of Fairborn, Jennifer B. Gregory of Winchester, Yvonnie "Winks" and Keith Wardle of Englewood.
Also surviving are stepsons and daughter-in-law, Lee Sheard of Dayton, Dick and Faye Sheard of Largo, Fla., and Bob Sheard of Germantown; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Everett Conger of St. Petersburg, Fla., Darlene Cole of Miamisburg, Donna and Bill Hamilton of Centerville, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ardie Smith Ashley of Kentucky.
Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 22, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Raymond Rothwell officiating. Burial was in Zion Cemetery near Eaton.

Fannie Mackie
Fannie Mackie, 82, of Eaton, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind. She was a former resident of Putnam County, Tennessee.
Born May 1, 1915, in White County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Dow and Mary Lee (Bradham) Nabors. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie "Bowser" Mackie; and a son, Wendell Mackie.
Survivors include three daughters, Alma Lee Miller of Pennsylvania, Lorell Combs of Brookville and Phyllis Hicks of Eaton; four sons, Ralph "Hoss" Mackie of Monterey, Tenn., Lewis Mackie of Sinking Springs, Ohio, Harold D. Mackie of Eaton and Roger Mackie of Springfield; 26 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 18, at Goff Funeral Home, Monterey, Tenn., with the Rev. Johnnie Lee officiating. Burial was in Cookville City Cemetery. Local arrangements were by Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel.
Virginia K. Shafer
Virginia (Kiracofe) Shafer, 90, formerly of Miamisburg and Ft. Myers, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at Brookview Retirement Center at Peebles, Ohio.
Born April 26, 1907, near Gratis, she was the daughter of Luther and Lucy (Eby) Kiracofe. She was a 1924 graduate of Gratis High School, attended Manchester College and graduated from Miami University in 1960. She taught school for 26 years, first at Gratis, then retired from Miamisburg schools in 1966.
Mrs. Shafer was a member of the Gratis Church of the Brethren, Delta Kappa Gamma (international teachers' honorary society), and Wally Byan Airstream Travel Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Shafer, in 1990; her parents; and two sisters, Louise Patton and Edith Snyder.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Ann Shafer of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jayne and Lyle Lambert of Peebles; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Howard and Jean Kiracofe of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Dr. Clayton and Evelyn Kiracofe of Sidney, Eugene and Marjorie Kiracofe of Warren, Ind., Albert Kiracofe of Gratis, Alfred and Lee Kiracofe of South Haven, Mich.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Grace Shafer, Betty and Marvin Willis, Helen and Elbert Brubaker, all of Gratis; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Gratis Church of the Brethren, Gratis, with Bob Caplinger officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. Brooke-Lafferty-Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home, Peebles, is in charge of arrangements.

Aaron L. Flora
Aaron L. Flora, 95, formerly of West Manchester, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Mercy Siena Woods in Dayton after an extended illness.
Born Jan. 18, 1902, in Dayton, he was the son of the late Henry and Susan (Denlinger) Flora, and had lived in Preble County most of his life. He was a retired farmer and painter, and was a member of Price's Creek Old German Baptist Church.
His wife, Ruth (Leedy) Flora, died Oct. 4, 1980.
Survivors include three sons, Gene Flora of Modesto, Calif., Richard Flora of Englewood and Robert Flora of Clayton; one daughter, Betty Avery of New Lebanon; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Naomi Bowman; two grandchildren; three brothers, John, Amos and Joe Flora; and a sister, Mary Ullery.
A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Michael Chapel, West Manchester, followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. at Price's Creek Old German Baptist Church. The Home Brethren and Dean Denlinger will officiate. Burial will be in Wares Chapel Cemetery, West Manchester.
Mabel L. Phillabaum
Mabel L. Phillabaum, 91, of Richmond, Ind., died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at Heritage Regency after a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 12, 1906, in Union County, Ind., she was the daughter of Albert and Mattie (Todd) Lunsford. She had lived in Richmond since 1964 and was retired from the National Cash Register Company.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester Ohler; and her second husband, Lawrence Phillabaum.
Survivors include one son, Robert Ohler of Kettering; one daughter, Margaret Supensky of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Lunsford of Richmond, Ind.; three half brothers, Isaac Lunsford of Oxford, Charles Lunsford of Somerville and Albert Lunsford of Illinois; and a half sister, Evelyn Witter of Eaton.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Rader and Louise McDaniels; four brothers, Ott, Varda, Marshall and Richard Lunsford; and one grandson, Mark Markiewicz.
Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 22, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Chapel, Richmond, Ind., with the Rev. Steve Lunsford officiating. Burial was in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond.
Edna L. Koeller
Edna L. (Stubbs) Koeller, 77, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Gratis, died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at Boswell Hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. Koeller was a graduate of Gratis High School and attended Miami University. She was a cosmetologist and bank manager before retiring to Sun City in 1976. She was a birthright member of the West Elkton Friends Meeting (Quaker) and attended the Phoenix Friends Meeting at the time of her death.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Harold Koeller; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Wayne Phelps of Germantown; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Pam Koeller of Wichita, Kan.; a grandson and wife, Aaron and Lori Phelps of Germantown; a sister, Ruby Hartman of Camden; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Helen Stubbs of Eaton; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Clara Stubbs; a sister, Dorothy Clippinger; and two brothers, Howard and Rudolph Stubbs.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the West Elkton Friends Meeting, West Elkton.

James T. Jackson
James Tillman "J.T." Jackson, 67, of Pine Grove, Tenn., died Sunday evening, Aug. 31, 1997, while visiting at the home of his son in New Paris.
He was retired from Eastman Chemical Company, and was a member of the Pine Grove Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Jackson; sons and daughters-in-law, L.B. Jackson of Union Temple, Tenn., James T. Jr. and Cindy Jackson, Doug and Lisa Jackson, all of New Paris, Marty and Shirley Jackson of Pine Grove, Tenn.; his mother, Phronia Jackson of New Paris; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ilene and Cliff Crawford, Ethel and Jay Bailey, all of New Paris; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Ann Jackson of Millville, Ohio, Billy and Margie Jackson of Richmond, Ind.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bufford Jackson.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Pine Grove Freewill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Rob Ward, Lester Morelock, Wayne Waycaster and Orval Dolan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Jeffers Mortuary, Greeneville, Tenn., was in charge of arrangements.
