Wayland C. Brown Sr.
Wayland Clayton Brown Sr., 57, of 1350 Lakehurst Drive, Rock Hill, S.C., died Friday, June 19, 1998, at his home.
He was born in Greene County, Tenn., and was employed for more than 25 years as a tax accountant at Springs Industries. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda H. Brown; a son, Wayland Clayton Brown Jr.; two daughters, Rena Hood of Rock Hill, S.C., and Vicki Brown of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; his mother and stepfather, Nellie B. and stepfather, Herman Gauch of West Manchester; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Joyce Via of Germantown and Barbara Bogle of Katy, Texas.
Funeral services were held at Adnah United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Leonhardt officiating and the Rev. Jack Brown assisting.

Virgil C. Smallwood
Virgil Combs Smallwood, 86, of Preble County Line Road, Middletown, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at his home.
Born July 10, 1911, in Frenchburg, Ky., he was the son of Joseph and Alice (Gose) Smallwood. He was a self-employed farmer and contractor, having constructed many ponds and lakes in Preble County and the surrounding area. He was a member of the West Elkton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nellie Smallwood; a daughter and Myrna and Vince Taylor of Middletown; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Betty Smallwood of Camden; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Opal Smallwood of Frenchburg, Ky.
He was preceded in death by a grandson; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 30, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Gratis.
Selma M. Dusenberry
Selma Mae Dusenberry, 89, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Eaton.
She was born April 18, 1909, in a sod house in Wellfleet (Ord), Neb., the daughter of the late James Wayne and Margaret Mae (Tidyman) McGinnis. She had lived in Preble County since 1935.
Her father was a veterinarian. Her brothers and sister were also born in the sod house in Nebraska, and all the children were college graduates. In 1931, she received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Kansas.
On Dec. 26, 1936, she married Grant Van Ness Dusenberry in Richmond, Ind., and he died March 9, 1984.
She served as Eaton librarian from 1944 to 1959, and on Dec. 15, 1959, became the first district/head librarian for the newly formed Preble County District Library in charge of seven branches until she retired in 1969.
She was the first person to establish a working relationship with the Montgomery County Library and The State Library for books and reference materials for use in the Preble County Library.
Mrs. Dusenberry started painting at age 62 and earned numerous awards for her art. She was a member of the Preble County Art Association and its first president (1965-66), a member of the American Association of University Women, member of The Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors and a member of the Greenville Art Guild.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Lorraine McGinnis of Lincoln, Neb., and Ruth McGinnis of Chicago, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Joyce Ann Young of Eaton.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Kenneth T. McGinnis and Dr. James G. McGinnis; and a sister, Beulah Marx.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at the Preble County Art Center, 601 Hillcrest Drive (Ohio 732), Eaton. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen L. Scherer
Helen L. Scherer, 63, of St. Paul, Minn., formerly of Camden, died Saturday, June 27, 1998.
Born Oct. 26, 1934, in Camden, she was the daughter of Cecil and Opal (Adams) Sorrell. She was a 1952 graduate of Camden High School. Mrs. Scherer was employed as clerk at Ramsey County Human Services for 18 years, retiring in 1995.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald J. Scherer of Bayport, Minn., and Robert Scherer of St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, Donald Sorrell of London, Ohio, and Joe Sorrell of Baycliff, Texas; and two sisters, Betty Jane Groves and Carol Little, both of Camden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Arthur L. Sorrell and Richard A. Sorrell.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 2, at Fairmount Cemetery, Camden, with the Rev. Greg Jackson officiating. R.C. Nein & Sons-Limber Funeral Home, Camden, is in charge of arrangements.
Oren F. Eby
Oren F. Eby, 89, formerly of Twin Creek Road, West Alexandria, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Governor Harris Homestead in Eaton.
Born Aug. 14, 1908, in Clay Township, he was the son of Clarence and Nellie (Foutz) Eby. He was a graduate of Lanier High School, and had been a farmer all his life.
His wife, Catherine, died in 1991. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dave Eby in 1977 and George Eby in 1998; and a sister, Florence Eby.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Bob Keener of West Alexandria, Beverly K. and William Godwin of Apex, N.C.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Joe Eby of New Lebanon and Dan Eby of Farmersville; one sister, Susie Suggs of West Alexandria.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 3, in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Ron Dafler officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:25 a.m. on Friday at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Walter E. Shanks Sr.
Walter E. Shanks Sr., 86, of Lewisburg, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Survivors include his wife, Emiliana Shanks; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Bob Haworth, Ben and Barbara Williamson, all of Lewisburg; a son, Walter Shank Jr. of Lewisburg; a daughter, Deborah Shank of Lewisburg.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Jeff Steinke of Rushville, Ind., Joey Booso of Brookville, Dan Haworth of Lewisburg; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Booso of Lewisburg; sisters, Pauline Wiseman of Centerville, Mildred Lane of Ansonia and Dorothy Williams of Elm Grove, Ohio; and brothers, Robert and Caroline Shanks of Vandalia, Virgil and Icie Shanks of Beavercreek.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel Shanks; his parents, Rebecca and Milton Shanks; sisters, Lola Boyer and Flossie Lewis; and a brother, Clyde Shank.
Funeral services were Monday, July 6, at Gilbert-Fellers Funeral Home, Brookville, with Father Todd Grogan officiating. Burial was in Royal Oak Memorial Gardens, Brookville.

Dorothy M. Root
Dorothy Marie Root, 77, formerly of Pine Street, Tipp City, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at Walnut Creek Nursing Center in Kettering.
Born June 25, 1921, in Dayton, she was the daughter of John Vincent and Esther (Wright) McWilliams. She was a former employee of the Dayton Daily News.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia M. Woodward of Huber Heights; sons and daughter-in-law, Charles J. and Mildred I. Knipfer of West Alexandria, Earl M. Knipfer of Riverside; a half sister and her husband, Emily and Phil Mitchell of Dayton; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two nephews and one niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Root, in 1991; a twin sister, in 1921; a brother, John V. McWilliams Jr. and a son-in-law, Jerry Woodward, in 1997.
Funeral services were Friday, July 3, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Craig Frank officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Harold A. Brubaker
Harold A. Brubaker, 75, of Ohio 122 South, Eaton, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at his home after a short illness.
Born June 9, 1923, in Gasper Township (Preble County), he was the son of the late Omer B. and Runella (Deaton) Brubaker. He was a 1940 graduate of Lanier High School, a Washington Township farmer and minister of the Upper Twin Old German Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret J. (Bowser) Brubaker; daughters and sons-in-law, Juel A. and Calvin Durham of Eaton, Nancy B. and Tom Childs of Gallipolis; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth S. and Fred Bowman, Anna M. and Ralph Brower, all of Eaton, Leah E. and Dennis Metzger of Camden.
Also surviving are grandsons, Phillip C. (Nancy) Durham, Michael L. (Gwen) Durham, John R . (Marcia) Durham; great-grandchildren, Meredith M., Madeline A., Francine C. and Houston J. Durham; nieces, nephews, two aunts and several cousins.
A prayer service was held Friday, July 3, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, followed by funeral services at the Upper Twin Old German Baptist Church, West Alexandria, with the Brethren officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis.

Steve Crane Jr.
Steve "Speedy" Crane Jr., 66, of Preble County Line Road, Middletown, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in an auto accident on Ohio 122 South in Preble County.
Born Nov. 10, 1931, in Richmond, Ky., he was the son of the late Steve Sr. and Mary (Ballinger) Crane. He retired in 1985 from A & B Foundry, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Ethel (Lainhart) Crane; sons, James and Billy Crane, both of Middletown; sisters, Jewel Evans of Louisville, Ky., Beulah Brock and Eula Combs, both of Berea, Ky.; brothers, the Rev. Charles Whitamore and J.B. Crane, both of Berea, Ky.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 4, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Brother Kincaid officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Kathryn E. Bacon
Kathryn E. Bacon, 84, of Camden, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Born April 15, 1914, in Dayton, she was the daughter of Edward and Leona (Fultz) Walker. She was an active member of Camden United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star of Camden, and was the associate grand marshal of the first Black Walnut Festival in Camden.
She married Homer Bacon on Oct. 11, 1930.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and George Keller of Clearwater, Fla.; one brother, Arthur Walker of Eaton; two sisters, Edith Langevin of Eaton and Helen Lawton of Dayton; two granddaughters, Kathy Rice of Safety Harbor, Fla., and Cynthia Vetter and husband Stephen of Salt Lake City, Utah; and two great-grandchildren, Justin and Jenna Rice.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer, on Oct. 3, 1991; a brother, Wilbert Walker; and a sister, Betty Bayless.
Funeral services were Monday, July 6, at Camden United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jackie Marshall and the Rev. Jim Misheff officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden. R.C. Nein & Sons-Limber Funeral Home, Camden, was in charge of arrangements.
