Mary E. Penland
Mary Elizabeth (Coblentz) Penland, 88, formerly of New Paris, died Friday, July 17, 1998, at Heartland of Eaton after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 8, 1909, in Jackson Township (Preble County), she was the daughter of the late Clayton R. and Daisy (Barnet) Coblentz. She was a 1927 graduate of Jefferson High School, a graduate of Earlham College, and had taught college courses in California and Jackson School in Preble County. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in New Paris.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Kermit B. Penland; two brothers, Lawrence Coblentz of New Paris and John Coblentz of Jeffersonville, Ind.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Alice Stephen, in 1943; and two infant brothers, in 1908 and 1914.
Funeral services were Monday, July 20, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Evans officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.

Kenneth L. Stevens
Kenneth LeRoy Stevens, 63, of 5455 U.S. 35 West, Eaton, died Friday, July 17, 1998, at the VA Medical Center in Dayton after a three-year illness.
Born Nov. 19, 1934, in Montgomery County, he was the son of the late Perry Elmer and Ada Belle (Mercer) Stevens, and had lived in Preble County all his life. He was a retired truck driver from Wysong Gravel after 30 years, and was a U.S. Army veteran. He attended the New Hope United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Johanna Wheeler of Richmond, Ind.; a brother, Willard Stevens of Monroe, Ga.; a half brother, Cecil Gehron of Eaton; nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were Tuesday, July 21, at the Dayton National Cemetery, with the military chaplain officiating. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Emrick
Dorothy "Dottie" Emrick, 63, of Ohio 503, West Alexandria, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at her home.
Born Aug. 11, 1934, in Gratis, she was the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Kinder) Swartz. She had worked for the Twin Valley Bank in West Alexandria and Gratis for almost 25 years, and was a member of the Gratis United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Rolland "Ron" Emrick; two daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Frederick Howard of Covington, Ohio, Kimberly and Bob Shindeldecker of West Alexandria; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles "Chip" and Rhonda Emrick of West Alexandria; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Peggy Jones of Greenville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Betty Miller, in 1995.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 21, at the Gratis United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harlan Sorensen officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.

Makayla L. Baker
Makayla Leigh Baker, infant daughter of Nicholas Wayne and Crystal Lynn (Wise) Baker of Miamisburg, died shortly after birth Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a twin sister, Makinzie Lynn Baker; maternal grandparents, Rodney Sr. and Zelma Wise of Germantown; maternal great-grandmother, Ruby Stringfield of Eaton; maternal great-great-grandmother, Helen Coffey of Tennessee; paternal grandparents, Leonard Baker Sr. and Theresa Baker, both of Eaton; and paternal great-grandmother, Esther Baker of Germantown.
Graveside services were Monday, July 20, at Preble Memorial Gardens, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Edmund Wise officiating. Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.
Carl A. Yokers
Memorial services for Carl Andrew Yokers, 79, were held at Hope Lutheran Church in Riverside, Calif. He died of heart disease at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Born in Sidney, Ohio, he had lived in Riverside for 36 years. He was an insurance agent at Paul Revere Life Insurance in Worcester, Mass., for 40 years before retiring in 1965. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of 2683 Victoria Park Drive, Riverside, Calif. 92506; three daughters, Marilyn Harrison of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Cheryl Kent of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Colleen Yokers of Riverside, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Kohler of 6945 Murray, Apt. 3, Cincinnati, Ohio 45227.
Charles E. Shafer
Charles Edward Shafer, 66, of Eaton, died Monday, July 20, 1998, in Eaton after a one-year illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Eaton, he was born Dec. 28, 1931, the son of Leonard R. and Florence M. (Schleiger) Shafer. He retired in 1992 from the City of Eaton Maintenance Department. Mr. Shafer was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; a life member of VFW Post 8066 and a member of American Legion Post 215, both of Eaton.
His wife, Jean Ann (Wysong) Shafer, died Nov. 3, 1987.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Michelle Shafer of Eaton; two daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and D.C. Kelly, and Lisa Ann Ott, all of Eaton; two stepdaughters and stepson-in-law, Pamela Beeman of Marion, Ind., Carolyn and Steve Shade of Eaton; three grandsons; two step-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Shockley and Shiela Bierly, both of Eaton; nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; and a special friend, Thelma Sarver of Eaton.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris Garwood; and three brothers, Walter Shafer, Glen Shafer and Carl Shafer.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at the funeral home. Burial, with military graveside services, will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Mary L. Engelage
Mary Louise Engelage, 82, of Eaton, died Monday, July 20, 1998, at her home after an extended illness.
Born Aug. 10, 1915, in Butler County, she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Zora (Shafer) Armstead, and had lived in Preble County since 1960. She had been a practical nurse at Heartland of Eaton. Mrs. Engelage attended Visitation Catholic Church and was a member of the Home Garden Club.
Survivors include a brother, Paul Armstead of Hamilton; nieces and nephews; and special friends, William McClellan, James and Bell McClellan, all of Eaton.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Estes, Doris Price and Gladys Vinson; and two brothers, Jack Armstead and Robert Armstead.
Graveside services were Thursday, July 23, at Somerville Cemetery, Somerville, with Father J. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.
William M. Vore
William M. "Bill" Vore, 68, of Prices Creek Road, Lewisburg, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born July 25, 1929, in Dayton, he was the son of Ralph O. and Ethel L. (Banfill) Vore. Mr. Vore had lived in Lewisburg most of his life. He had worked at Inland in Dayton from 1952 to 1964 and was the owner/operator of Vore Excavating. He was a member of Eagles Lodge #2202 in Eaton and the Lewisburg Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Irene J. (Mahaffy) Vore; a son, Michael E. Vore of Lewisburg; two daughters, Theresa Garnett of Lewisburg and Lisa Heindl of West Manchester; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a twin sister, Wilma Seibel of Stockport, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Robert Vore; and two sisters, Marguerite Rouch and Mildred Anderson.
Funeral services were Friday, July 24, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Raymond Rothwell officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.

Makinzie L. Baker
Makinzie Lynn Baker, infant daughter of Nicholas Wayne and Crystal Lynn (Wise) Baker of Miamisburg, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Makayla Leigh Baker, on July 15.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her maternal grandparents, Rodney Sr. and Zelma Wise of Germantown; maternal great-grandmother, Ruby Stringfield of Eaton; maternal great-great-grandmother, Helen Coffey of Tennessee; paternal grandparents, Leonard Baker Sr. and Theresa Baker, both of Eaton; and paternal great-grandmother, Esther Baker of Germantown.
Graveside services were Friday, July 24, at Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Edmund Wise officiating. Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.
Benny R. Ryder
Benny R. Ryder, 57, of New Lebanon, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born Jan. 30, 1941, in Middlesboro, Ky., he was the son of Rufus R. and Sue (Burton) Ryder. He had worked at Cadillac Gage for 20 years. Mr. Ryder was a member of Olivet United Brethren in Christ Church, where he served as chairman of the church administrative board; and had served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1963.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Georgia S. (Walden) Ryder; two sons, Michael and Matthew Ryder, both of New Lebanon; a daughter, Jill Ryder of Nashville, Tenn.; mother, Sue Ryder of Winchester, Ky.; a sister, Mitzi Burrus of Winchester, Ky.; and a half sister, Yvonne Forte of Metaire, La.
Funeral services were Monday, July 27, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Pastor Phil Marxson officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

Betty M. Baker
Betty M. Baker, 61, of Dayton died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born Nov. 25, 1936, in Dayton, she was the daughter of Hubert and Ruth (Moore) Burns. She had been a housekeeper for Jaycee Tower Apartments and was a member of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, William L. Baker; two daughters, Marilyn Ward of Garden Grove, Calif., and Regina Baker of Dayton; a son, Donald W. Baker of Celina; a sister, Bessie Holben of Dayton; and grandchildren, Amanda Baker, Brett Baker, Bridgette Coleman, Ivy Coleman, Jeffrey Baker and Robert Ward.
Funeral services were Monday, July 27, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, followed by burial in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
