Orpha C. Freeman
Orpha Catherine (Hoops) Freeman, a resident at Harborside Nursing Home, New Lebanon, died there Friday, July 17, 1998.
Born Aug. 2, 1900, in West Alexandria, she was the daughter of Frank and Matilda (Apple) Hoops.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Horace West of Lancaster, Calif., Elizabeth Liffick of Vandalia, Margaret and Pionas Collier of Dayton; sons and daughters-in-law, Warren and America Freeman of Mesa, Ariz., Emerson and Doria Freeman of Darden, Tenn., James A. Jr. and Joanne Freeman of West Carrollton, Daniel and Betty Freeman of Brookville, Orville and Betty Freeman of Dayton, Harold and Geneva Freeman of Arcanum.
Also surviving are a sister, Hazel Scott of Lewisburg; brothers, Ellsworth Hoops of Dayton and Roy Hoops of Lewisburg; 26 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Freeman Sr.; a brother, Clyde Hoops; and sisters, Iva Faha and Edna Slorp.
Funeral services were Wednesday, July 22, at Weaver Funeral Home, Dayton, with the Rev. Daniel W. Bellavia officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Paul N. Waters
Paul N. "Puddles" Waters, 60, of Laura Circle, Eaton, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at his home.
Born June 26, 1938, in Dayton, he was the son of Gladys Ebert. He had worked for the Preble County Highway Department since 1974, was a member of the Richmond Moose Lodge, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a life member of AmVets in Eldorado.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Lois (Kitson) Waters; children, William J. "Bill" (Charlotte) Worley of Lexington, Ky., Sharon Elaine Worley of Fairhaven, Terry Lee Worley and Ronald Allan (Patsy) Worley of Eaton; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three cousins.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Eugene Worley, in 1965; and a great-granddaughter, Shelby Dawn Burchett, in 1994.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the chapel.

Lottie J. Davis
Lottie J. Davis, 95, of East Road 700 South, Columbus, Ind., died Sunday night, July 26, 1998, at Columbus Regional Hospital emergency room.
Born Oct. 2, 1902, in Blue Ridge, Ga., she was the daughter of James Burt and Lillie Elizabeth (Belew) Arp. She married Simon G. Davis on Feb. 24, 1922, in Akron, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1983. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sons, Raymond, Gordon, Donald and Thomas Davis, all of Columbus, Ind., and Ed Davis of Corbin, Ky.; two daughters, Lucille Hurd (formerly of Eaton) and Ruth Pittsley, both of Columbus, Ind.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Roy and Carl Davis; two daughters, Betty Lou Davis and Ethel Jean Winebrenner; a brother, Gene Arp; and several half brothers and half sisters.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. (Indiana time) Wednesday, July 29, at Myers Funeral Service, Reed & Jewell Chapel, 3729 25th St., Columbus, Ind., with the Rev. Michael T. Hogg officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Cemetery.

Caroline J. McKee
Caroline Jane McKee, 77, of Quaker Trace Road, West Alexandria, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born July 6, 1921, in Brookville, she was the daughter of the late Lester Otto and Ida Mae (Fox) Brower. She was a 1939 graduate of Brookville High School, and had worked at J.E. Parker Co. in Eaton. She was a member of Olivet United Brethren in Christ Church, New Lebanon.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Lowell L. McKee; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Jean and Ernest Herndon Sr. of Lewisburg, Frances Mae Church of Montgomery, Mich., Bonnie Sue and Scott Watts of Eaton; sons, Floyd LeRoy McKee of Lewisburg and Darrell Lynn McKee of West Alexandria.
Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Karen (Glenn) Davidson, Ernest C. (Belinda) Herndon Jr., Jay Herndon, Susan Hale, Darlene (Ralph) Martin, Darvin (Jenny) Lighter, Sheri (Frank) Reese, Michael (Cheryl) McKee, Amy (Jody) Reynolds, Timothy McKee, Bliss Church Jr., Codey Watts and Eric Watts.
Sixteen great-grandchildren survive, including Robert (Ramona) Davidson, Crystal Davidson, Steven Yokey, Brandon Hale, Adam Martin, Angela Hale, Candice McKee, Shelley Yokey, Brittany Martin, Jason Reynolds, Ashton Reese, Dustin McKee, Caleb Reese, Austin McKee, Brena Reynolds and Aaron McKee; one great-great-granddaughter, Chelsea Davidson.
Other survivors are brothers and sisters-in-law, John Jacob and Eleanora Brower of Reading, Mich., Henry Herbert and Mary Brower of West Alexandria; sisters, Roseline Miller of Farmersville and Eileen D. Glander of Lewisburg.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Lester Leroy Brower in 1937, Clyde Otto Brower in 1974, Charles Edward Brower in 1982, Noah Oliver Brower in 1991; sisters, Bessie Brower in 1938, Mary Elizabeth Deeter in 1968, Anna Foust in 1980 and Icy May Ernst in 1992.
Funeral services were Friday, July 31, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Phil Marxson officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

Ray R. Hofacker
Ray R. Hofacker, 80, of Ohio 503 North, Lewisburg, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Franciscan Medical Center in Dayton.
Born Dec. 29, 1917, in Lewisburg, he was the son of the late Herschel and Naomi Mae (Chrisman) Hofacker. He was owner/operator of Valley Radiator Shop, Humble Garage and Service Station, both in Lewisburg. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Lewisburg.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy D. (Thompson) Hofacker; daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores J. and Tilford Powers of West Alexandria, Jo Ann Elaine and Willard Norvell of Eaton; son and daughter-in-law, Paul E. and Deanna Hofacker of Brookville; brothers, Robert Hofacker of Eaton, Hubert Hofacker of Huber Heights and Richard Hofacker of Lehigh Acres, Fla.
Also surviving are five grandchildren and their spouses, Edward (Patricia) White, Jeff (Beth) White, Carrie (Ed) Krebs, Teresa (Wayne) Garner and Patrick Dawson; 11 great-grandchildren, Scott, Stephanie, Jennifer, Vanna White, Erika and Levi Waldon, John and Jesse Garner, Sandra White, Aaron Dawson and Riley Garner; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by grandsons, Paul Hofacker Jr. and Eric Ray Hofacker; brothers, Paul, Dwight, Walter and Thurston Hofacker; and sisters, Marie Cullers Borts and Irene Heckathorn Rackle.
Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 1, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Mathew Fike officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

Ethel W. Glass
Ethel (Williams) Glass of Eaton died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born in Franklin (Brown County), Ind., she was the daughter of Otis and Sarah (Bozell) Williams, and had lived in Preble County wince 1969.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Edward Glass, in 1964; a daughter, Phyllis Bullock, in 1992; and a son, Kenneth W. Glass, in 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Ann Hiatt of Eaton; a sister, Fern of Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren, Jacqui Byrd and Michael Hiatt; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at the convenience of the family in Dale Cemetery, Connersville, Ind., with the Rev. Fred Hill officiating. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Pauline L. Gilbert
Pauline Lucille Gilbert, 84, formerly of West Decatur Street, Eaton, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Elkhart General Hospital in Elkhart, Ind., after an extended illness.
Born Nov. 2, 1913, near Gettysburg (Preble County), she was the daughter of the late Ora E. and Jesse Grace (Marshall) Trace. She retired from Corning Glass in Greenville, and was a member of the Corning Employees Retirement Club. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of Order of Eastern Star at Ansonia and the First Presbyterian Church of Eaton; and a former member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church and Methodist Church in New Weston, Ohio.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Glenn Gilbert; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Alden and Rose Gilbert of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Ron Miller of Elkhart, Ind.; three grandchildren, Tara Allison and Trace William Gilbert, and David Gilbert Miller.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Trace, Mary Hawley and Velma Spencer; and a brother, Scott Trace.
Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, Eaton, with the Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Richard C. Loeber
Richard Charles Loeber, 76, of 2422 S. "D" St., Richmond, Ind., died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Reid Hospital.
Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Dayton, he was the son of Lorenz and Emma (Kroger) Loeber. He had lived in Richmond for 30 years. Mr. Loeber was formerly a school teacher in Beavercreek and Huber Heights, Ohio, and Williamsburg and Richmond, Ind. He was a former medical records administrator.
He retired from the United States Postal Service, having worked at the Eaton Post Office, and currently worked as a greeter in the Richmond, Ind., Wal-Mart Store. A disabled U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had served in India and China. He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, the YMI and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary (Ruche) Loeber; two sons, Andrew Loeber of Richmond, Ind., and Christopher Loeber of Gifu, Japan; two daughters, Nancy Sparks and Barbara Loeber, both of Richmond, Ind.; three grandchildren; one brother, Leo Loeber of Dayton; and two sisters, Marian Loeber and Irene Fiedor, both of Dayton; nieces and nephews.
A prayer service was held Monday, Aug. 3, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Chapel, Richmond, Ind., followed by Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Andrew Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin Morris officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Wayne County Veterans Council, was in St. Andrew Cemetery.

Dietrich H.J. Dunker
Dietrich Henry John Dunker, 96, of Ohio 503 South, West Alexandria, died Friday, July 31, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born Oct. 1, 1901, in Breman, Germany, he was the son of Heinrich and Katharina (Ratzen) Dunker. He retired from Brown-Brockmyer Mfg. in 1968 after 35 years. Mr. Dunker was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and King Hiram Lodge #88 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Annaliese Dunker; two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Susan Dunker of West Alexandria, John and Kayleen Dunker of Eaton; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Gene Haines of Laura; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Heinrich Dunker of Germany.
He was preceded in death by a son, Walter, in 1973; a daughter, Emilie Schmidt, in 1991; five brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Salem Lutheran Church, West Alexandria, followed by burial in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements. Masonic services were conducted during visitation Monday at the funeral home.

Delores R. Rhoades
Delores R. "Dee" Rhoades, 69, of Eaton-Lewisburg Road, Eaton, died Friday evening, July 31, 1998, at Heartland of Eaton after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 4, 1928, in Preble County, she was the daughter of Lester S. and Dorothy Mae (O'Dell) Armstrong. She had been a waitress all her life, working for Hines Truck Stop and Stop 127 Truck Stop. She was a caregiver to the elderly and a poll worker for the Preble County Board of Elections. Mrs. Rhoades was a member of Wares Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Rhoades, in 1986; a daughter, Lori Ann Rhoades, in 1963; and a brother, Richard Joe Armstrong, in 1997.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela K. and William F. Hines of West Manchester, Linda J. Powell and William Sizemore of Lewisburg, Carolyn S. and Ron Davenport of Camden, Diana L. and Roy Spencer, Janet E. and Gary Booher, all of Eaton, Joyce E. and Jake Hayslett of Valparaiso, Ind., Penny S. and Mike Urban of Lewisburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. Jr. and Dorey Rhoades of Verona.
Also surviving are a stepson, Robert Lambert of Rio Rancho, N.M.; sisters, Charlene Maurer of Clayton, Carol Armstrong of Richmond, Ind., Peggy Ashley and Connie Beasley, both of Eaton; brothers, James L. Armstrong, Gary "Bud" Armstrong, Dean Armstrong and Stanley Armstrong, all of Eaton; a special friend, Rosie Myers of Richmond, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
