Joe R. Crye
Joe R. Crye, 75, of 6710 Cedar Springs Road, New Paris, died unexpectedly Friday, July 31, 1998, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born March 19, 1923, in Maryville, Tenn., he was the son of John Shimmon and Sally (Fields) Crye. He had lived in Richmond since 1948, and was retired from Avco, where he worked as a machinist. He had been working as a carpenter. Mr. Crye was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a founding member of the First Baptist Church of New Paris.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Crye and Bobby Crye, both of New Paris; two daughters, Lona Street and Doris Darnell, both of Richmond, Ind.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Maynard Crye of Maryville, Tenn.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda (Williams) Crye, in 1994; two sons, James Crye and Joe Crye Jr.; and one brother, Lehman Crye.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Chapel, Richmond, Ind., with the Rev. Reggie Osborne officiating. Burial was in Goshen Cemetery.

Betty K. Markey
Betty K. Markey, 74, of Eaton, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Cherish Nursing Center in Richmond, Ind.
Born Feb. 2, 1924, in Kokomo, Ind., she was the daughter of the late John and Mildred (Schu) Porter, and had lived in Preble County since 1988. She was a 1942 graduate of Camden High School and a 1945 graduate of the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. She was a retired registered nurse.
Survivors include her husband, John O. Markey; a son, David J. Markey of Centerville, Ohio; a sister, Helen Powell of Eaton; a brother, William Porter of Centerville, Ohio; nieces and nephews.
A brother, Donald Porter, is deceased.
There will be no services or calling hours. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, is in charge of arrangements.
Hubert Hough
Hubert Hough, 88, formerly of West Elkton, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Hawthorne Glen Nursing Center.
Born April 30, 1910, in Spartansburg, Ind., he was the son of Thomas W. and Ethel (Mitchell) Hough. He had served as postmaster of the West Elkton Post Office for over 37 years and was a self-employed barber for over 40 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary A. (Phillips) Hough, whom he married Feb. 24, 1934; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Ronnie Jones of Middletown, Carolyn and Everett Henry of Millville, Joyce and Robert Workman; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Francis Lantz and Janice Barga, both of Greenville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Hough.
Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Aug. 5, at R.C. Nein & Sons Funeral Home, 249 N. Main St., Camden, with the Rev. Phil Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairmound Cemetery, West Elkton.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Elmer L. Nelson Sr.
Elmer Lee Nelson Sr., 99, of Mann Road, Eaton, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Heartland of Eaton.
Born June 21, 1899, Mt. Solo, Va., he was the son of the late Daniel and Lillian (Wikel) Nelson, and had lived in Preble County most of his life. He was a retired mechanic from Meadow Gold Dairy in Dayton.
Survivors include a son, Harold R. "Dick" Nelson of Camden; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Robert W. Nelson, Elmer L. Nelson Jr. and Clyde H. Nelson; and three brothers, Frank Nelson, Charles Nelson and George Nelson.
Graveside services were Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton, with the Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. There was no public calling. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.
Dora M. Marcum
Dora M. "Rita" Marcum, 67, of Ohio 503 South, West Alexandria, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born Aug. 9, 1930, in West Liberty, Ky., she was the daughter of William Glover and Ina Myrtle (Short) Leach. She had attended Germantown High School, and had retired from Westview Acres Nursing Home in Eaton.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Marcum and Larry Marcum, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Jeff Marcum of Gratis; five daughters, Alene Heindl of West Alexandria, Connie Adkins of West Palm Beach, Fla., Patricia Johnson of Olean, N.Y., Lynda Dyer and Kimberly Collins, both of Eaton.
Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her mother, Myrtle Leach of Eaton; two sisters, Anita Leach and Dorothy Thomas, both of Eaton; two brothers, Harold Leach of Connersville, Ind., and Gary Leach of Vandalia.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Rachel C. Robertson
Rachel Chaney Robertson, 84, of Camden, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Born Oct. 28, 1913, in Estill County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Darius Mead and Jessie Ann (Baker) Chaney. She married McCager B. Robertson on Jan. 3, 1931, in Estill County, and was a member of the Christian Church in that county.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin and Regina Sue Robertson, Daniel K. and Virginia Robertson, all of Camden; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Sue and H. Michael Simpson of Rising Sun, Ind., Sandra L. and Edward Ferguson of Camden, Edith K. and John Sheehan of Moorehead, Ky.; several grandchildren; and one brother, Warren O'Dell Chaney of Glenwood, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three daughters, Wilma Elizabeth, Verneda Ann Rader and Janet F. Hall; one son, Reginal Robertson; one grandson, Samuel Robertson; five brothers, William Travis Chaney, George Everett Chaney, Walter Wallace Chaney, Edmund Rowe Chaney and Carl Wayne Chaney; and three sisters, Gracie Stevenson Hamilton, Hazel Handy and Lilly Ashcraft Fox.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at R.C. Nein & Sons-Limber Funeral Home, 249 N. Main St., Camden, with the Rev. Greg Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.

Ruby J. Walling
Ruby Jean Walling, 73, of Sterling Inn, 17738 Francesa, Victorville, Calif., died Thursday, July 30, 1998.
Born Nov. 17, 1923 in Platt City, Mo., she had been a resident of Escondido, Calif., since 1987, and moved to Victorville 10 months ago. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Escondido, and was active in the Protestant services and Bible Study classes at the Sterling Inn.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Walling of Victorville, Calif., and Leigh Walling of Eaton; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Sterling Inn in Victorville, and on Thursday, Aug. 6, at the First Congregational Church in Escondido. Mead Mortuary, Barstow, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

Sue Burnett
Sue Burnett, 57, of 3354 Weiss Road, Richmond, Ind., died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Reid Hospital.
Born Dec. 10, 1940, she was the daughter of John C. and Mary (Campbell) Smith, and had lived in Richmond most of her life. She attended M.C. Napier High School and graduated from Midway Jr. College in Midway, Ky. She had attended Bethel Baptist College, Earlham College, IU East and Miami University at Oxford. Mrs. Burnett had been office manager for GYN, Ltd. where she had worked for 26 years. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leon Burnett, whom she married June 30, 1962; one daughter, Nicole Burnett of Richmond, Ind.; three sisters, Margie Reva Shafer of Danville, Ill., Geneva Combs of Hopkinsville, Ky., and Wanda Mae Stacy of Hazard, Ky.; four brothers, Kenneth Smith of Tucson, Ariz., John Richard Smith of Middletown, Denny Smith of Oshkosh, Wis., and James Allen Smith of Chicago, Ill.; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. (Indiana time) Thursday, Aug. 6, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, Richmond, Ind., with the Rev. David Layman officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Linda L. Owens
Linda L. Owens, 45, of 409 Forest Ave., Dayton, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Grandview Hospital in Dayton. She was a former resident of Preble County.
Born July 27, 1953, in Middletown, she was the daughter of John A. and Opal (Flinchum) Owens. She was a 1971 graduate of Eaton High School.
Survivors include her mother, Opal Howard of Eaton; one sister, Dorothy K. Dawson of West Alexandria; an uncle, Raymond Flinchum of New York; and an aunt, Earsie MacElwee of Eaton.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Graveside services were Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Glen E. Fisher officiating. Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, was in charge of arrangements.
Violet D. Cassel
Violet D. Cassel, 83, of Dayton, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
Born March 30, 1915, in Gordon (Darke County), Ohio, she was the daughter of Charles M. and Charlotte (Shaw) Flory. She retired in 1982 from F&F Mold & Dye in Verona after 35 years; was a member of the DAV Ladies Auxiliary of Lewisburg and Salem Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Floyd W. Cassel Sr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Floyd Jr. and Jeanne Cassel of Greenville, Everett Cassel of Hurst, Texas, Philip and Mia Cassel of Huber Heights, Keith Cassel of Trotwood, Kent and Deborah Cassel of Dayton and Norman Cassel of New Paris.
Also surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Joe Baril of Laughlin, Nev., Shirleen and Jim Cooper of Dayton, Karen Gosnell of Trotwood and Sheila Sumner Cassel of Pensacola, Fla.; 25 grandchildren; 18-great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Flory of Melbourne, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Kathryn Flory of Lewisburg.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Heber, John, Bernard, Kenneth, Robert and Alden Flory; a sister, Sissy Mae Flory; and a grandson, Kevin Goodpaster.
Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 7, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Tyner officiating. Entombment was in Royal Oak Memorial Gardens, Brookville.

Frederick A. Keister
Frederick A. Keister, 69, of Eaton, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at his home in Lakengren.
A former longtime resident of Germantown, he was retired from Armco Steel after 36 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Gwen Keister; a daughter, Valerie Smith of Albany, N.Y.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Karl and Dawn Keister of Germantown and Kevin Keister of Fairborn; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Peters of Germantown and Ruby Carpenter of Middletown; a brother, Wilbur Keister of Oxford; a sister-in-law, Peggy Keister of Middletown; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Harriet (Darragh) Keister; and a brother, James Keister.
Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 6, at Arpp & Root Funeral Home, Germantown, with the Rev. Roger Green officiating. There was no visitation. Burial was in Germantown Cemetery.
