James S. Moats
James S. Moats, 53, of Chillicothe, died 3:37 p.m.Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at his residence, after an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 8, 1948, in Ross Co. to Nelson S. and Annabelle Peters Moats. He was married Oct. 5, 1970 to the former Vickie L. Howard, who survives.
Also surviving are his mother, of Chillicothe, daughter and son-in-law Michelle L. and Bobby Jones of Chillicothe; son and daughter-in-law J. Michael and Jessica S. Moats of Sarasota, Florida; brothers and sisters-in-law Daniel and Nancy Moats of Hamilton, Ohio and Marion and Sherry Moats of Chillicothe; sisters Velma Deming, Ruth Moats and sisters and brothers-in-law Linda and Delbert Evans, Sarah and Michael Lenegar all of Chillicothe; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, infant brother and sister.
Mr. Moats was an Administrator Procurement for Thomson Consumer Electronics. He was a graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science Degree, a member of NAPM and a member of Brookside Church of Christ in Christian Union, where he had served on the board as elder and trustee.
A devoted husband, father, son, relative and friend, Jim Moats was a man of love, compassion, caring , generosity, intelligence and good humor. He will be missed by all of those who had the honor and privilege of knowing him.
Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Brookside Church of Christ in Christian Union, with Rev. David Dean officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call at the Ware Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Alma (Hart) Houser
Alma (Hart) Houser, 81, of Washington Court House, died Sept. 11, 2002, at O.S.U. Hospitals in Columbus, following surgery.
She was the widow of Robert Houser, of Chillicothe. Well known for her enthusiasm and love of life, Alma was a well respected businesswoman who had a successful life-long career in the field of cosmetology. She was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain friends and family.
She is survived by sisters, Macel M. Hart Garvin and Ada I. Hart Nolan; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by brothers, Ofa D. Hart, Fola R. Hart, Orville J. Hart; and sisters, Mable N. Hart Farley, Hazel P. Hart Hamric, Lucy M. Hart, Ruth M. Hart Deems.
A memorial service will be held in Mineral Wells, W.Va., at a later date.

Beverly Ann Murphy Mess, 52, of Greenfield, died Monday at her residence.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Murray-Fettro Funeral Home, Greenfield. Burial will follow in Bainbridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Barbara L. Shoemaker, 70, of Mt. Tabor Road, died 2 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at her residence, following an extended illness.
Carl Eugene Broughton
Carl Eugene Broughton, 61, of Bainbridge, died 2:50 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at OSU Medical Center, Columbus.
He was born May 31, 1941 in Ross County. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Francis Broughton, who he married Nov. 28, 1996. Also surviving: His father, Roy Broughton of Chillicothe; his mother, Geneva Wilt Broughton of Chillicothe; four children, Gene Broughton of Chillicothe, Todd Francis of Bainbridge, Joseph Boggs of Bourneville, Shaun Boggs of Bainbridge; two grandchildren, Steven Broughton of Jackson and Tabitha Broughton of Chillicothe; one Great Granddaughter, Samantha Broughton; one brother and one sister, Roy Allen Broughton and Carolyn Kingery, both of Chillicothe.
He will be dearly missed by his beloved dog, Peter Piper.
He was a member of the Ohio Operating Engineers Local 18, the Sons of the American Legion Post 14 of Bainbridge, and the FOE Aerie 1325 of Greenfield.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at the Bainbridge Church of Christ with Troy Villars officiating. Burial will follow in Bainbridge Cemetery. Everett Thomas 'Corky' Corcoran Jr.
Everett Thomas "Corky" Corcoran, Jr., 78, of Springfield, died Saturday, September 28, 2002.
He was born April 11, 1924 in Chillicothe, the son of Everett Thomas Corcoran, Sr. and Elma Segbers. Mr. Corcoran is preceded in death by his sister Mary McCarty.
Mr. Corcoran owned and operated Corcoran Painting and Decorating for a number of years.
Everett was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post 1031, F.O.E. #397, Knights of Columbus #624 and a diehard Notre Dame fan. He was a U.S. WWII Navy veteran serving as a first class radioman on the LST508 and participated in the Normandy invasion.
Mr. Corcoran was the devoted husband of 53 years to Leona Mae (Depugh); loving father to 5 sons and spouses; Tom and Linda Corcoran of Pickerington, Ohio, Bob and Karen Corcoran, David, Steven and Christopher J. Corcoran all of Springfield; also survived by brother and spouse Richard and Peg Corcoran of South Vienna; sister Joann Flynn of Cape May, New Jersey; 10 grandchildren Mark, Michael, Matthew, Josh, Sarah, Jared, Hilary, Kyle, Zachary and Jessica and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Conroy Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Raphael Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Catholic Central High School Sustaining Fund.
Harold W. Fleming
Harold W. Fleming, 83, formerly of Chillicothe, passed from this life unexpectedly on Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 at his residence.
He was born Feb. 7, 1919 in Columbus, the son of John William and Evabelle Brooks Fleming. On Mar. 31, 1940 he married Velma R. Perry who preceded him in death on Oct. 8, 2000.
Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy A. and Gail M. Fleming, Dublin, a son, Thomas W. Fleming, Columbus, a grandson, Randy and wife, Jennifer Orr, Dublin and a great grandson, Samuel Orr. His parents and a sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Fleming was a retired sales representative with the Model Dairy.
He was a US Army veteran, serving in WW II.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday in Greenlawn Cemetery with Rev. Carol Davis officiating and military rites by the Ross County Veterans Firing Squad. Calling hours will not be observed. The Fawcett Oliver Glass and Palmer Funeral Home is serving the family.
Randolph W. 'Randy' Jones
Randolph W. "Randy" Jones, 50, of 513 E Main St., died 7:30 a.m., Saturday September 28, 2002 at his residence, following a short illness.
He was born September 4, 1952, in Washington, D.C., to John E. and Lucille R. Strough Jones. On September 16, 1984, he married the former Jane Betts, who survives.
Also surviving are his mother, of Chillicothe; sons, Nelson and Rusty Jones and Roger and Richard Detty, all of Chillicothe; daughter and son-in-law, Roxanne and Jason Wilson, of Chillicothe; five grandchildren; brothers, John and Joe Jones, both of Columbus, Jesse Jones, of Florida and Dennis Jones, of Texas; sister Bert Hutchinson, of Chillicothe and many nieces and nephews. Randy was predeceased by his father, a daughter, Loretta Jones and grandmother, Letty Music.
Mr. Jones was an employee of AutoZone.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday October 2, 2002, in the Ware Funeral Home, with Larry DePew officiating. Burial will follow in Londonderry Cemetery. Friends may call at Ware's from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.
Charles W. Bennett
Charles W. "Buck" Bennett, 83, of DeLand, Fla., died 11 a.m., Friday, September 27, 2002, in the Alliance Center for Health Care in DeLand.
He was born April 16, 1919, in Covington, Ky., the son of the late Elza and Amanda Bennett. On December 15, 1985, he married the former Melissa J. Bookwalter, who survives.
Also surviving are five daughters, Dorothy (Dan) Finley, Cincinnati, Joan (Andy) Sepsi, Naples, Fla., Carolyn (Emmitt) Collins, Waverly, Margaret Sue (Roger) Crago, Chillicothe, Marsha Jane (Todd) Metzger, Clarksburg; three sons, Jim (Debbie) Ruth, Cincinnati, Allen (Jeri) Bookwalter, Clarksburg and Bob (Teresa) Bookwalter, Clarksburg; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Marilyn Campbell and one son, Jack Ruth, preceded him in death.
Mr. Bennett was a member of the DeLand First United Methodist Church, President of the Beresford Manor Association, active member of the DeLand Shuffleboard Club, editor of the Shuffleboard articles in the Beacon, a lifetime member of the VFW and the DAV. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II.
He retired in 1977, after 35 years of managing the Heritage Restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 3, 2002, in the Fawcett Oliver Glass and Palmer Funeral Home, with Reverend Ernie Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in Brown's Chapel Cemetery, where Military Graveside Services will be observed. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
