Marion E. "Butch" Whitmer
Marion E. "Butch" Whitmer, 81, of Chillicothe, passed from this life at 12:03 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2002, at his home following an extended illness.
He was born September 7, 1921, in Fayette County, the son of Ellsworth Valentine and Faith Brown Whitmer. On September 23, 1946, he married Ruby Grubb, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Jack and wife, Barbara Whitmer, Chillicothe, a foster son, Murch and wife, Janet Bruce, Kingston; grandchildren, Misty and Nicole Bruce, Melea Orr and Shannon Wilson, three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Storer, Washington Court House; a brother, Hugh Whitmer, Springfield; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Whitmer, Washington Court House; and a brother-in-law, Woodrow Grubb, Chillicothe.
His parents, a sister, Lois; and a brother, Claire, preceded him in death.
Butch was a veteran of W.W.II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from Mead Paper after 39 years of service.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 1, 2002, (today) in the Fawcett Oliver Glass and Palmer Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Kramer of Faith Chapel officiating. Burial will follow in Twin Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday (today). In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Adena Health System, 111 W. Water St., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
Earl A. Black
Earl Alexander Black Sr., 86, of Frankfort, Ohio, formerly of Columbus, born in West Union, Ohio, on November 29, 1915, died Monday, November 4, 2002, at Edgewood Manor, Greenfield.
On April 6, 1942, he married Lillian Mae Willis, who preceded him in death on February 7, 1987.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Clifford and Joy Black, of Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl A. and Roger L. Powell Sr., of Frankfort, and Patti Tackett, of California. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Deanna Hoffman, Mrs. Robert (Dana) Hartsough, Mrs. John (Sherri) Caraway, Mrs. Brian (Carla) Featheringill, Michelle Black, Roger L. (Cynthia) Powell Jr., Mrs. DJ (Sheila) Garrett, Earl A. (Teresa) Black III, Rev. Kevin (LeAnne) Salkil, David (Turell) Lindsey, Curt (Katie) Lindsey, and Mrs. Joey (Missey) Coleman, thirty-three great-grandchildren with one on the way. Mr. Black is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Russell (Dorothy) Thompson, Loveland, Ohio, and brother, William Black, Cincinnati, Ohio.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Black was preceded in death by his parents, Norman G. and Rilla Hawkins Black; his children, Earl A. Black Jr., Ronald D. Black, Billy Black and Linda Tuthill; his siblings, John and Floyd Lee Black and Faye Louise Willis.
On January 7, 1955, Earl was raised to the degree of Master Mason in Capital City Lodge #656 of Free and Accepted Masons, on April 27, 1963, he earned the 32nd degree of Valley of Columbus Order of Scottish Rite, on June 23, 1971, entered Crown Chapter #8 OES (served as Worthy Patron with daughter Cheryl in 1977) and is a Life Member of the 46 Club of the 17th district of Ohio and continues to be in good standing with Lorraine Chapter #1 Order of the Eastern Star. He was retired from Transportation Service Inc., out of Columbus.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Earl extended his knowledge and respect for nature to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known as the Old Man of the Woods, he will be sadly missed and the Euchre Table will never be the same.
An uniformed fellowship celebration of Earl's life will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at Schoedinger North Chapel, 5554 Karl Rd. Columbus, Ohio at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. at Union Cemetery, led by Rev. Kevin Salkil.
Cora "Sue" Burnside
Cora "Sue" Burnside, 72, of 91 Dutch Run Road, Piketon, Ohio died 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at Southern Ohio Medical Center, Portsmouth, Ohio.
She was born on February 27, 1930 in Nitro, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Hughie and Mabel (Cochran) Hart. On August 16, 1946 she was united in marriage to John Howard Burnside who survives.
Also surviving are two sons: Michael (Kathy) Burnside of Piketon, Ohio and Steven (Lisa) Burnside of Delaplane, Virginia; 2 daughters: Tammy (Steven) Oyer of Waverly, Ohio and Cathy Greene of Lucasville, Ohio; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; and 2 sisters: Fay (Claude) Chaney of Cross Lanes, West Virginia and Edra Craig of Winfield, West Virginia.
Sue was a member of Stockdale Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2002 at the Howe Wheeler Boyer Hornback Funeral Home with Pastor Charley Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery, Piketon, Ohio.
Friends may call at the Howe Wheeler Boyer Hornback Funeral Home from 4 - 8 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Friday.
Roy E. Hart
Roy Elmer Hart, 87 of Hamilton, Ohio passed away, November 3, 2002 at the Valley View Alzheimer's Care Center in Frankfort, Ohio.
He was born January 21, 1915 in Popular Grove, Ohio, the son of Ed and Zelia Hart. The mother of his children, Kathryn Goff - Hart and his 2nd wife Lena E. Hart, preceded him in death.
Surviving are son, Larry A. Hart, Florida; step-daughter, Rosemary (George) Gerhardt, Hamilton; daughter-in-law Marilyn Hart, Piketon; one granddaughter, Teresa A. Hart-Chaney (Todd), Frankfort; two grandsons, Stephen (Stacy) Hart, Piketon, John Hart, Oxford; step-grandsons, Bill (Aliesa) Thompson, Hamilton, David (Trease) Thompson, Hamilton; one great-grandson, Dirk Anthony Chaney, Frankfort; one great-granddaughter Chelsey Ann Chaney, Frankfort; five step-great grandsons, David Jr., Brandon, Adam, Ryan and Caleb Thompson; Karen A. Foreman Hart - Tolliver, mother of two of his grandchildren, Piketon; and several nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, son, Ronald C. Hart; brothers, Jesse and Carey Hart; and sister, Blanche Beekman.
Roy was retired from the General Motors of Hamilton, Ohio. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at Webb-Noonam in Hamilton, Ohio.
Kathryn Myers Anderson Moore
Kathryn Myers Anderson Moore, age 80, died Friday, October 25, 2002 at Howard County Hospital in Columbia, Maryland. Born and raised in Columbus, she retired from the State of Ohio as a Personnel Officer.
A 1939 graduate of Chillicothe High School, she completed her B.S. degree from the Ohio State University in 1943. She was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Elizabeth Circle. Former Woman of the Year with the American Association of University Women; past President of the Columbus Branch of AAUW and past officer of the Ohio State Division; past Matron of OES, Lorraine Chapter #1; a member and past officer with Church Women United and past member of ALTRUSA.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Anderson (Katherine Hayes) Moore of Laurel, Maryland; and many cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband William M. and son John P. Moore.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2002 at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 7 W. Henderson Road, Columbus, Rev. Joel Baer officiating. Her interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Educational Foundation, Columbus Branch, AAUW: Columbus Branch FF Program in her memory. Arrangements entrusted to Schoedinger North Chapel, 5554 Karl Road.
John B. Summers
John B. Summers, age 69, of Frankfort, died unexpectedly Monday evening, November 4, 2002.
He was born on May 29, 1933, at Yatesville, in Fayette Co., the son of the late Floyd and Martha Ellen Lykins Summers. In 1951, John moved to the Frankfort area with his family. On Aug. 11, 1968, he married the former Dorothy R. Robinson, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons; David (Karen) Summers and John Eric Summers, all of Frankfort. One stepson, Joseph (Cindy) Storts, of Seminole, FL, and a step daughter, DeAnn (Josh) Novak of Stow, OH. Four grandchildren, Jacob Butts, Joey Storts, Jessie and Jake Zalom. One sister, Barbara Jean Summers, of Frankfort, one brother, Dwight Summers, of London, OH, and a sister-in-law, Eloise Summers, of Washington Court House, He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and David Summers.
John was a 1952 graduate of Bloomingburg High School and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. John and his family were members of the former New Bethel United Methodist Church. John retired in 1995 from Steelox Systems where he had worked for several years as a crane operator. He was lifetime member of VFW Post 3762 in Washington Court House and the AmVets Post 4. He was a 40 year member of the Joseph Ellsworth White Post 483-American Legion. He was also a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association and the Gold Wing Riders Association and was a member of the FOE-Aerie #600. John was also a faithful member of the Liars Club at the Frankfort Corner Resturant.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 8, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the EBRIGHT FUNERAL HOME, Frankfort with Rev. Glen Hiles officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort where military honors will be accorded by the Frankfort American Legion. The antique tractors are parked and quiet. Bibs folded and put away. His beloved motorcycle standing at the ready - waiting for the rider that will no longer come, for he has moved on to an everlasting peaceful ride in heaven.
Verle A. Underhill
Verle A. Underhill, 95, of Piketon, died Monday, at the Pike Community Hospital, Waverly.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at the Howe Wheeler Boyer Hornback Funeral Home, Piketon, with Rev. Harry Ramsey and family officiating. Interment will be at Alexander Memorial Park, Evansville, IN. Friends may call at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Clyde M. Buchwalter, 94, of Chillicothe and Sun Valley, California died Saturday at Westmoreland Place.
Boone Purnell
Boone Purnell, 81, of Londonderry died 4:30 a.m. Saturday November 9, 2002 in Cleveland Clinic following an extended illness.
He was born November 18, 1920 in Rowan Co., Kentucky to the late Leslie and Georgia Kitchen Purnell. On November 13, 1942, he married the former Jessie Alice Whisman who survives.
Also surviving are son Kenneth Purnell, son and daughter-in-law Anthony and Terry Purnell, daughter Linda Purnell all of Londonderry, daughter and son-in-law Donna and David Fisette of South Bend, Ind., 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law Roy and Vella Purnell of Venice, Fla., sister Olive Maxson of Chillicothe and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Brenda, a sister, seven brothers and three grandsons.
Boone was a part-time farmer and a retiree of the B&O Railroad following 21 years of service.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday November 14, 2002, in the Ware Funeral Home with Rev. Stanley Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in Londonderry Cemetery. Friends may call at Ware's from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
