Richard J. Hasselbeck
Died: Friday, January 24, 2003
Age: 78

HILLSBORO, OHIO - Richard J. "Dick" Hasselbeck, 78, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in the Highland District Hospital in Hillsboro.

Born Feb 23, 1924, in Cincinnati he was the son of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Landewich Hasselbeck.

He was first married to Yula Lear Hasselbeck, who preceded him in death. He later married Bonnie Dee Holt Hasselbeck. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include four sons, Peter Hasselbeck and David Hasselbeck, both of Sidney; Paul Hasselbeck of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Joe Hasselbeck of Cheyenne, Wyoming; two daughters, Mrs. Darren (Theresa) Hampshire of New Weston, Ohio, and Mrs. Ron (Mary) Zile of Sardinia, Ohio; one brother, Ralph Hasselbeck of Dent, Ohio, and 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents and his first and second wives, one son and three brothers preceded him in death.

Mr. Hasselbeck was an Army Air Corp veteran serving during World War II with the Flying Tigers.

He was a member of the Flying Tigers Association.

He retired from Alcoa in Sidney where he had been employed as an engineer.

According to his wishes there will be no visitation or services.

The Hope Miller-Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Marcellus Clemens Holthaus
Died: Friday, January 24, 2003
Age: 88

FORT LORAMIE - Marcellus Clemens Holthaus, 88, Basinburg Road, Fort Loramie, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at 6:15 p.m. at his residence.

He was born Sept. 20, 1916 in Fort Loramie, the son of Bernard and Caroline (Prenger) Holthaus.

He is survived by a sister, Catherine Holthaus of Fort Loramie; four brothers, Lester Holthaus, Victor Holthaus and Anthony Holthaus of Fort Loramie, and Bernard Holthaus of Anna.

He was preceded in death by a sister, a brother and a niece and a great-niece.

Mr. Holthaus retired in 1979 after 34 years as a group leader with Copeland Corp. in Sidney. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in the European Theater as a tank battalion sergeant and received the Bronze Star. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Men's Sodality and the Apostleship of Prayer of the church.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fort Loramie, with the Rev. Steven Shoup officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Loramie Rescue Squad or St. Michael Church.

Zachary J. Perry
Died: Friday, January 24, 2003
Age: 16

TROY - Zachary J. Perry, 16, of Troy, died following an auto accident Friday, Jan. 24, 2003 at 10:09 p.m.

He was born June 5, 1986, the son of Arliss S. and Christine (Walker) Perry, who survive in Troy.

He is also survived by maternal grandparents, Jack and Mary Walker of Piqua; paternal grandmother Mary J. Perry of West Milton; paternal grandfather Arliss A. Perry of Englewood; two sisters, Mrs. Jason (Michelle) Foster and Mrs. Kevin (Mindy) Kitchen of Sidney; and a brother Johnny Adkins of Sidney.

Perry was a sophomore at Miami East High School. He was an honor student and a member of the Student Council, FFA, two-time letter winner on the golf team, wrestler and and member of the baseball team. He was employed as a lot technician at Joe Johnson Chevrolet in Troy. He was a fan of the Kentucky Wildcats and the Michigan Wolverines.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Baird Funeral Home in Troy, with the Rev. Jonathan Kollmann officiating. Burial will be in Casstown cemetery.

Calling hours will be Monday from 2-4 and 6-9 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lillian Fleck
Died: Thursday, January 23, 2003
Age: 78

CELINA - Lillian Fleck, 78, 3381 Harrison Road, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at 12:23 a.m. in Community Hospital, Coldwater.

Born Nov. 2, 1924, in Celina, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Margaret Keller Homan.

On July 6, 1946, she married John Fleck of St. Sebastian, Ohio.

Survivors include five sons, Jim Fleck of Chickasaw, Paul Fleck and Mark Fleck, both of St. Sebastian, George Fleck of Duluth, Ga. and Johnny Fleck of Minster; four daughters, Mrs. Jim (Carolyn) Kohlrieser of Carthagena, Ohio, Irene Borgerding of Burkettsville, Ohio, Mrs. Hank (Alice) Kaiser of St. Sebastian and Mrs. Dan (Wilma) Timmerman of Fort Recovery; three sisters, Alvina Uhlenhake and Rose Ontrop, both of St. Henry and Mary Borgert of Montezuma, 34 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Two sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. Fleck was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church. She belonged to the Ladies Rosary Altar Sodality of the church and the Knights of St. John Auxiliary in Maria Stein.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Sebastian Catholic Church with the Rev. John Bensman officiating. Burial will be in St. Sebastian cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in St. Henry.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Association of Mercer County, P.O. Box 624 Celina, Ohio 45822 or St. Sebastian Church.

Rosetta B. Francis
Died: Thursday, January 23, 2003
Age: 81

RUSSIA - Rosetta B. Francis, 81, 230 W. Main St., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at 4:35 a.m. in Wayne Hospital, Greenville.

Born Dec. 10, 1921, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Alma Monnin Francis.

On Sept. 7, 1940, she married Lavern S. "Frenchie" Francis. He died on Nov. 26, 2000.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Herb (Becky) Ranley of Minster and Juliann "Boots" Pierron and Carol Rindler, both of Versailles; three brothers, Vernon Francis of Middletown, Leon Francis of Sidney and Edward Francis of Ludlow Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Leroy (Delores) Frankenburg of Sidney and Mrs. William (Jane) Hill of Middletown, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son and one grandson.

Mrs. Francis was a member of St. Remy Catholic Church.

She was retired from her employment at Copelands in Sidney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Remy Catholic Church in Russia on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Eugene Vonderhaar officiating. Burial will be in St. Remy Church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, on Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations can be directed to the Versailles Life Squad or the Ohio Parkinson Foundation.

Dorothy Evelyn Poland
Died: Wednesday, January 22, 2003
Age: 78

Dorothy Evelyn Poland, 78, a native of Shelby County, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 in Atlanta, Ga. She was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Sidney, the daughter of Clifford and Evelyn (Smith) Rogers.

She married Raymond Poland on Nov. 1, 1945, and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Poland is survived by her son, Raymond G. Poland of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Mrs. Stan (Robin) Geniusz of Utah; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and her husband.

A graduate of the Miami Valley School of Nursing, Mrs. Poland was a member of the Army Cadet Nurses during World War II. While living in Ohio, she was active in the Medway United Methodist Church as a Sunday and Bible school teacher and in many women's activities. Her body was cremated with arrangements by Metro Crematory, Peachtree City, Ga.

A memorial service is planned Friday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. at Medway United Methodist Church, with private graveside services to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 2144, Peachtree City, Ga.

Shirley A. Bohon
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 64

Shirley A. Bohon, 64, 11755 Fair Road, Sidney, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at 3:10 p.m. at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at the Adams Funeral Home in Sidney.

Carl V. Henson
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 89

Carl V. Henson, 89, 437 Kirk Lane, Troy, a former Sidney resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at 2:57 a.m. at Northridge Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Carl Vance Henson
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 89

TROY - Carl Vance Henson, 89, 437 Kirk Lane, formerly of Sidney, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at 2:57 a.m. at Northridge Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He was born April 8, 1913, in St. Louis, the son of Homer and Josie O. (Fifer) Henson.

He was married to Edith (Hill) Henson, who died May 5, 1980. Later he married Jane (Leatherman) Henson, who survives.

Other survivors are a son, Michael Henson of Cincinnati; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Mary Ann) Heckler of Louisville, Ky.; a stepson, Trent Leatherman of Goshen, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Mrs. David (Thea) Barret of Coral Springs, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Johnny Henson of Cincinnati.

Mr. Henson was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Sidney, retiring in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army quartermaster corps in Panama during World War II. He was a 50-year member of American Legion Post 217 of Sidney, and he was a member of the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge, both of Troy. He was a member of First United Church of Christ of Troy and a former active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Sidney.

Services are planned for Monday at 10 a.m. at Adams Funeral Home, with the Rev. Al Bastin and the Rev. Carol Bastin officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Graceland cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Emma "Emmy" L. Hoelscher
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 78

MINSTER - Emma "Emmy" L. Hoelscher, 78, 5049 Wabash Road, Coldwater, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at 2:25 a.m. at Joint Township District Hospital in St. Marys.

She was born May 18, 1924 in Fort Loramie, the daughter of Bert and Rose (Robbins) Vonderhyde. She married Thomas Hoelscher who preceded her in death in 1964.

Mrs. Hoielscher is survived by her children, Shirley Ann Wiley of Sommerset, Ky., Mike and Tamara Smith of Maplewood, Steven Hoelscher of Minster, Mrs. Jeff (Linda) Drees of Celina, Mrs. Russ (Carolyn) McNeil of Anna and Brenda Alderton of Wapakoneta; 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by six sisters, Mary Luegers of Minster, Irene Grisez of Versailles, Mrs. Norval (Dorothy) Hole of Celina, Mrs. Walter (Katheryn) Bergman of Ft. Recovery, Norma Wellman of Coldwater and Elsie Winner of Celina and one brother, Leonard Vonderhyde of New Windsor, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two grandchildren, one great grandchild, two brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Hoelscher was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Coldwater and was a former member of St. Michael Church, Fort Loramie.

She had worked at Wendy's Restaurant in Celina and Copeland Corporation, Sidney.

Services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church, Fort Loramie, by Rev. Steven Shoup. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. and from 9 to 10a.m. Friday at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster.
