James Edward Chaney
Died: Friday, June 20, 2003
Age: 72

TROY - James Edward Chaney, 72, of Troy, died Friday, June 20 at Koester Pavilion, Troy following an extended illness.

He was born July 19, 1930 in Troy to the late Charles Emerson and Minnie Blanch (Hansford) Chaney.

Mr. Chaney is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Bennett) Chaney of Troy; four children, Carol and Barney Pellman of Troy, Clay Richard and Susan Chaney of Piqua, Candace Lynn Chaney of Troy and Carl Scott and Debra Chaney of Piqua; five sisters, Dorothy Hall of Texas, Betty Moore of Troy, Caroline Jean Avey of Troy, Mary Ellen Durst of Tipp City and Sara Kay Scherer of Piqua; five brothers, Jack Chaney of Greenville, Jerry Chaney of Troy, Bill Chaney of Troy, Larry Chaney of Pleasant Hill and Pete Chaney of Troy; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas Pellman, Bryan Chaney, Carey Gene "Ceige" Chaney, Charles Edward Chaney, Jessica Chaney, Todd Murphy, Jennifer Turner, Brenis Speraw, Tyne Reeder and Samantha Chaney; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chaney was preceded in death by one son, Carey Gene Chaney; five brothers, Robert, Charles, Donald and David Chaney; and two sisters, Barbara Stewart and Judy Young.

He was a life member of the VFW and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War era. He also was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Hobart where he worked 41 years, retiring in 1992.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24 at Baird Funeral Home, Troy. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill cemetery. VFW Honor Guard services will be conducted at the cemetery.

Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Baird Funeral Home.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Miami County or to Koester Pavilion.

Mabe June Knapp
Died: Thursday, June 19, 2003
Age: 69

ST. MARYS - Mabel June Knapp, 69, 901 Kimberly Drive, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at 11:07 p.m. at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

She was born March 17, 1934, in London, Ky., a daughter of Veltie and Lilly (Mullins) Parman.

She is survived by a companion, Richard Miller of St. Marys; two sons and daughters-in-law, Davie Hoskins of Celina and Ronald and Elaine Hoskins of Avada, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Gerald Highley and Patricia and Harold Miracle, both of Celina, and Drinda and Gary Barton of Parowan, Utah; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Junita Tipton of Fairfield, Lorene Gresham of Hamilton and Sybil Davison, Bonnie Bruner and Ruth Pennington, all of London, Ky.; and five brothers, Sam Parman of Fairfield and Charles Parman, James Parman, Russell Parman and Oscar Parman, all of London.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, C. Blaine Knapp, a brother, Veltie Parman Jr., and two sisters, May Schell and Gladys Rose Parman.

Mrs. Knapp was retired from L.J. Minor Corp. in Celina. She had worked previously at Joint Township hospital, the Cotton Mill in St. Marys and Celina Coffee Shop. She was fond of animals, especially her pet dogs. She also enjoyed making crafts and working in her yard.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys. The Rev. Eric Fee will officiate. Burial will follow at Elm Grove cemetery in St. Marys.

Visitation will be Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Albert Junior Swartz
Died: Thursday, June 19, 2003
Age: 77

PIQUA - Albert Junior Swartz, 77, of Piqua, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Heartland of Piqua.

Albert was born Aug. 28, 1925, in West Milton to the late Albert Leo Swartz and Vinnie (Karns) Barns; He had previously worked for Versailles Poultry Producers, Union City Body Company and Conrail Railroad, Bradford.

Albert is survived by his wife, Helen (Kesler) Swartz of Bradford; four sons, William Swartz of Greenville, Frank and wife, Doris Kesler and Albert Swartz Jr., all of Port Jefferson, Donald Taylor of Springfield; three daughters, Mary and husband, Ron Kreitzer of Greenville, Rose Hobbs and fiance, Dean Buzzard of Tulsa, Okla., Nancy Denner of Indiana; stepsister, Roberta Shelton; 25 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Clinton Barns; first wife, Bertha (Sheets) Swartz; sons, Daniel Swartz and James Taylor; and grandson, Ronnie Kreitzer Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 23 at the Stocker-Fraley Funeral Home, Bradford. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. Monday until time of service at the funeral home.

Norbert B. Eiting
Died: Tuesday, June 10, 2003
Age: 91

MINSTER - Norbert B. Eiting, 91, 132 N. Hanover St., died Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Heritage Manor Nursing Home where he had resided 11 months.

He was born May 5, 1912 in Minster, the son of Harry and Sophia (Boerger) Eiting.

He married Eleanor Grogean, Aug. 22, 1936 in Russia and she survives with one son, Ronald (Betty) Eiting of Minster; three daughters, Doris Ann and Gene Romie, Sharry and Ron Robinson and Mary Rose Kacvinsky, all of Dayton; 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, Vera Grogean of Newport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Father. Larry Eiting; one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Eiting was retired from Minster Machine Company after 36 years. He was a member of St.. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster, was church custodian until he retired in 1992, and a St. Augustine Church men's choir member for 33 years.

Services will be conducted Friday, June 13, 2003 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Church by the Rev. Louis Schmit. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in Minster.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association and the Father Larry Eiting Memorial Fund.

Roberta M. Gares
Died: Monday, June 09, 2003
Age: 88

TROY - Roberta M. Gares, 88, of Troy, died at 8:40 p.m. at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio on Monday, June 9, 2003. She was born Setp. 10, 1914 in Clearville, Pa.

Mrs. Gares is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Pastor Douglas Magin of Troy; a daughter, Jean B. Gares of White Plains, N.Y.; a sister, Marilyn Gentilini of Ephrata, Pa.; four grandchildren, Jonathan Magin, Susan Magin, Jennifer Magin, all of Troy, and Sharon and Joel Misirian of Milwaukee, Wis.; and a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Misirian.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Scott R. and Daisy R. Williams Miller; her husband, Albert J. Gares in 1984; sister, Evelyn Wess and brothers, Wilber and Melvin Miller.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Troy, Ohio. Mrs. Gares was a retired secretary/receptionist.

Visitation will be from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14 at Baird Funeral Home, Troy, with a service at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Douglas Magin will officiate at the funeral service.

Burial will be in Arlington cemetery, Drexel Hill, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

Evelyn Jane Mann
Died: Monday, June 09, 2003
Age: 83

DELPHOS - Evelyn Jane Mann, 83, of Delphos, sister of Maxine Herring of Sidney, died Monday, June 9, 2003 at 3:20 p.m. at Koester Pavilion Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 6, 1919 in Logan County, the daughter of the late Darwin and Eva (Clark) Sprague.

She married Louis Mann and he preceded her in death July 19, 1985.

Mrs. Mann is survived by one son, Carl (Virginia) Mann of Dayton; her daughter in Sidney; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Warren (Zelna) Sprague of Jackson Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Dennis Mann; three brothers, Wilbur, Robert and Homer Sprague; and two sisters, Grace Sprague and Pauline Bell.

A homemaker who loved to cook, Mrs. Mann had managed several shoe stores. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church; Moose Lodge Auxiliary, Sidney; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Delphos; VFW Auxiliary, Delphos; Catholic Ladies of Columbia and Catholic Daughters of Columbia, Delphos.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St., John's Catholic Church by the Rev. Randy Giesige. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 11, 2003 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Harter and Son Memorial Chapel, Delphos.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Church and St. John's School.

Leona C. Schmidt
Died: Monday, June 09, 2003
Age: 95

COLDWATER - Leona C. Schmidt, 95, South Third Street, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at 1 a.m. in Briarwood Manor Nursing Home.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth cemetery. Visitation times are 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home.

Kenneth A. Rogers
Died: Sunday, June 08, 2003
Age: 82

COVINGTON - Kenneth A. Rogers, 82, of 10080 W. Greenville-Falls Road, Covington, died at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2003, in his home.

He was born Dec. 5, 1920, in Greenville to the late George A. and Eco (Garrison) Rogers.

He was a Covington High School graduate. Kenny along with his brother David Rogers, owned and operated Rogers Brothers Grain Elevator in Covington. He was also a retired farmer. He was a member of the old German Baptist Brethren Church, Sugar Grove District in Covington. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing and the time he and Eva spent together in Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Irene (Denlinger) Rogers. Also surviving is his daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Brian Brubaker of West Alexandria; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Dale "Red" and Bonita Rogers of Covington, and Carl and Cheryll Rogers of El Paso, Texas; grandchildren, Andy, Scott, Kristy and Tony Brubaker and Jared and Jeremy Rogers and Angela Lloyd; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Daphne Varela and Mason Lloyd; sisters and brother-in-law, Joanna and Odell Bowman of Roanoke, Va.; and brother and sister-in-law, David and Nova Rogers of Covington. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, David and his companion Mary Bayer.

He is preceded in death by his stepmother, Maggie (Miller) Aukerman Rogers; grandson, Ted Rogers; and sisters, Goldie Flory and Martha Bayer.

The funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 12, in the Pearson-Jackson Funeral Home, Covington, and 10 a.m., Thursday, June 12 in the Old German Baptist Brethren Church, Sugar Grove District, Covington. Home Brethren will be officiating. Burial will be in Miami Memorial Park cemetery, Covington.

Calling hours will be from 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Miami County.

John C. Dilworth
Died: Sunday, June 08, 2003
Age: 86

TROY - John C. "Jack" Dilworth, 86, of 1018 Curzon Circle, Troy, died Sunday, June 8, 2003 at his residence.

He was born March 10, 1917 in Piqua to the late John J. and Alice (Lamoureaux) Dilworth. He married Flora Rose Brandenburg, April 9, 1942; she still survives.

Other survivors include six sons and daughters-in-law, John and Deborah Dilworth of Richland, Mich., Steven and Pam Dilworth of Troy, Thomas Dilworth of Springfield, Michael Dilworth of Troy, Joseph Dilworth of Houston, Texas, and Phillip Dilworth of Sidney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and David Zirkle of Troy and Ann Kirk of Springfield; two sisters, Rosemary Amann of Sidney and Julia Dilworth of Piqua; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Dilworth and two sisters, Virginia and Alice Dilworth.

He was a graduate of Piqua Catholic High School. He was an Army veteran, a captain serving during World War II and recipient of the Bronze Star while serving during the Battle of the Bulge, in the 28th Infantry. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Troy and retired in 1985 as a senior sales consultant with Champion Paper Co., Troy where he had worked for 34 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Troy, with the Rev. Fr. Thomas R. Brunner as celebrant. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua, with military service at the graveside by Veterans Memorial Honor Guard of Troy.

Visitation is from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, Troy.
