HOFFMAN
Sarah S. Hoffman, 90, of 14867 Dull Robinson Road, Ohio City, died at 7:08 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2005, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.
She was born April 11, 1914, in Willshire Township, Van Wert County, the daughter of the late John C. and Jennie Louella (Wright) Hey. On May 12, 1935, she married Clifford Henry Hoffman, who died February 23, 2002.
Mrs. Hoffman was a homemaker and a member of Ohio City United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 346 in Ohio City.
Survivors include four sons, John H. (Dora) Hoffman and Joe L. (Cheryl) Hoffman, both of Ohio City, Jerry D. (Joyce) Hoffman of Van Wert and Jim A. (Jill) Hoffman of West Liberty; two daughters, Eulalia (John) Carlton of Van Wert and Mary K. (Bill) Fallis of Ohio City; 19 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Vernon Hey, Delmore M. Hey, Russell H. Hey, Marcus Hey and Warren Carlos Hey; a sister, Vivian McClure; one grandson, and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 18, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Pastor Mike Waldron officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Ohio City.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Thursday, February 17, at the funeral home.

JEWEL
V. Orville Jewel, 93, of Convoy, died at 12:25 a.m. Sunday, February 13, 2005, at Convoy Care Center.
He was born September 28, 1911, in Union Township, Van Wert County, the son of the late John and Sarah (Bice) Jewel. He never married.
Mr. Jewel was a retired farmer who enjoyed attending auction sales and had a huge collection of antiques and primitive tools. He had a fantastic memory for people, places and events and could relate many stories of family, friends and neighbors of years ago. He was able to live by himself and do all his cooking and cleaning until just a few months ago. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include two nieces and eight nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Irvin, Russell and the Rev. G. Raymond Jewel; four sisters, Goldie Pancake, Laura Jewel, Lillian Jewel and Vera Stewart; a half-sister, Agnes Campbell, and a nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 16, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Wayne Kargas officiating. Burial will be in Dealey Cemetery in Payne.

MILLER
David S. Miller, 75, of Van Wert, died at 2:10 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2005, at Van Wert Manor nursing home in Van Wert.
He was born January 6, 1930, in Van Wert, the son of the late Ernest Leo "Pete" and Elizabeth (Craig) Miller. On September 3, 1960, he married Joan A. Kinne, who survives at their residence.
Mr. Miller owned and operated the Gulf service stations in Van Wert and Glen Falls, N.Y. He had also managed H&R Block in Van Wert, St. Marys and Celina, and was a former meat cutter. He was a 1948 graduate of Van Wert High School, enjoyed running and was a former member of the Van Wert Runners Club. He served two terms of duty in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1959.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his precious dog, Lucy.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Craig and Phillip Miller, and a sister, Marsha Jill Miller.
A private memorial service will follow at a later date.
There will be no visitation.

BUETTNER
John Doyle Buettner, 84, of Delphos, died at 5:17 a.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima.
He was born February 2, 1921, in Delphos, the son of the late John L. and Katherine (Huysman) Buettner. On July 25, 1942, he married Bertilla "Tillie" Rahrig, who survives in Delphos.
Mr. Buettner retired from Ford Motor Company after 23 years of service. He also received an award for Continuous Ownership of an Allen County Centennial farm. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had belonged to the United Auto Workers union, Delphos Eagles, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Delphos and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed woodworking and making trailers and selling them from his yard.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gary (JoAnn) Buettner of Delphos and Dennis (Judy) Buettner of Elida; a daughter, Connie (Jerry) Paddubny of Fort Jennings; seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Marceil Leatherman, Hazel Taylor, Hannah Davidson and Beulah Montooth; four brothers, Everett, Edward, Cornelius "Neil" and Herschel "Curly" Buettner; three half-brothers, Fred, Harold and Poe Buettner, and a half-sister, Lillian Evans.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 19, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Delphos, with Father Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Delphos, with military graveside rites by the Delphos Veterans Council.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, February 18, at Harter & Schier Funeral Home in Delphos.

BROECKER
Elwood C. "Pats" Broecker, 81, of Fort Jennings, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 10, 1923, the son of the late Charles H. and Mayme (Hershey) Broecker. On June 1, 1954, he married Rita J. Brinkman, who survives at home.
Mr. Broecker was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having been in one of the first groups to serve in the Korean War, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Jennings. He was a member of American Legion Post 715, where he was a past commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3740 and Voiture 60, 40 et 8. He was a lifelong baseball fan and played for the Lima Reds, a minor league team for the Cincinnati Reds, in 1945 and 1946. He enjoyed visiting his brother in California and stopping in Las Vegas. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Elmer Louis (Cathy) Broecker of Middle Point and Robert Paul (Joan) Broecker of Delphos; three daughters, Patricia Ann "Patty" Broecker of Kalida, Dolores Marie "Dolly" (Mike) Schnipke of Delphos and Martha Rose "Marty" (Tony) Burgei of Cloverdale; a sister, Catherine Etgen of Delphos; one brother, John Broecker of Barstow, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Lorraine Muskat of Salem, Wis., and eight grandchildren, Catie Broecker, Kelly Schnipke, Scott Schnipke, Cody Schnipke, Christopher Broecker, Shawn Broecker, Nikki Burgei and Jenny Burgei.
He was preceded by an infant son, Elwood Broecker; a twin brother, Elmer Broecker and two other brothers, George and William Broecker; a brother-in-law, Syl Etgen, and three sisters-in-law, Mary Broecker, Alice Broecker and Jean Broecker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Jennings, with Father Tony Borgia officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be performed by the combined honor units of Legion Post 715 and VFW Post 3740.
Calling hours are 5-8 p.m. Saturday, February 19, and 1-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-8 p.m. Sunday, February 20, at Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp-Orians Funeral home in Ottoville, where a parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday and a combined Legion and VFW memorial service at 7:30 Sunday evening.

VAN METRE
Norma Marie Van Metre, 92, of Van Wert, went to be with her Lord at 6:11 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2005, in Van Wert.
She was born November 19, 1912, in Wetzel, the daughter of the late Samuel and Ada (Eller) Stemen. On April 29, 1933, she married Merril G. Van Metre, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Van Metre retired in 1988 from Van Wert Manufacturing/Universal Uniform in Van Wert after 40 years of service, 25 years of those as a supervisor. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Van Wert, a member of the United Methodist Women and a past member of the YWCA of Van Wert County. She was an avid card player and world traveler, making 256 trips with the Van Wert YWCA.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas N. (Darlene) Van Metre and Max R. (Liz) Van Metre, both of Van Wert; a daughter, Judith Ann (Richard) Miller of Van Wert, and a sister, Juanita Russell of Van Wert. She was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren, a loving great-grandmother to 21 great-grandchildren and a stepgreat-grandchild, and a loving great-great-grandmother to two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, E. Gordon Van Metre; five brothers, Therlo, Clayton, Archie, Lawrence and Raymond Stemen, and four sisters, Edna Hershberger, Martha Martin, Cleo Hershberger and Pauline Wortman.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 24, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Doug Stockton and Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery in Ridge Township.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, at the funeral home.

FUNK
Marilyn Funk, 71, of Phoenix, Ariz., died peacefully, after a lengthy challenge with ovarian cancer and participation in cancer research, on Monday, February 21, 2005, while the hospice program in Phoenix.
She was born July 1, 1933, in Irvington, N.J., the daughter of the late James and Bertha Murphy. On July 16, 1949, she married Chester Funk of Scott, who was stationed in the military in New Jersey. The couple then moved to Van Wert and Mr. Funk survives in Phoenix.
Mrs. Funk was a loving mother who also helped raise her many brothers and sisters and babysat for area children, both in Van Wert and Phoenix, as well as her own children. The Funks owned the Van Wert Radio and TV Repair business while living in Van Wert and moved to Phoenix in 1963. The couple enjoyed square dancing, meeting with "snowbirds" from Ohio in the winter, sightseeing, carport sales and entertaining guests and family in both their Phoenix home and cabin in the mountains at Prescott, Ariz.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Linda) Funk and Clifford Funk, both of Prescott; two daughters, Connie (George) Nallery Busby and Barb (Dennis) Fenn of Phoenix; four brothers, Ed (Glenna) Murphy and John (Jean) Murphy, both of Van Wert, Harry (Peggy) Murphy of Lewisburg, Tenn., and Jim Murphy of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Evie (Don) Villone of Ohio City and Pat (Jim) Warner of Hollywood, Fla.; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a 14-year-old son, Doug, who died of cancer in 1978, and one brother, Alan Murphy, who died in 1994.
Private funeral services were conducted in Phoenix on February 25.
