DARWOOD
Arthur J. Darwood, 78, of Van Wert, died at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, June 26, 2005, at his residence.
He was born May 14, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., the son of the late Norman and Margaret (Fink) Darwood. On July 16, 1955, he married Marilyn King, who survives in Van Wert.
Mr. Darwood was a U.S. Army veteran who retired as a major, He also taught school for several years in the former Blue Creek and Mendon-Union schools and, for the past 27 years, was the owner and operator of a helicopter agricultural spraying business. He was a member of American Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both in Van Wert and of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert. He was a graduate of Ohio City-Liberty High School, Bowling Green State University and St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, Ind.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John (Maria) Darwood of Merritt Island, Fla., and David (Lillian) Darwood of West Burlington, Iowa; two daughters, Jean (Tom) Greenawalt of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Jacqueline (Brad) Tracy of Lakeland, Fla.; a brother, Norman (Delores) Darwood of Van Wert, and six grandchildren, Elizabeth Darwood, Jennifer Rotsinger, Katy Quilless, Dustin Arthur Tracy, Nicholas Bradford Tracy and Lindsay Marie Tracy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Deshler.
Viewing hours are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, where a rosary service will be held at 8 that evening.
POLLOCK
Kerry Curtis “KC” Pollock, 25, of Van Wert, died Sunday morning, June 26, 2005, at his residence.
He was born August 5, 1979, in Van Wert, the son of Jerry Lee and I. Joy (Ricketts) Pollock, both of whom survive in Van Wert.
Mr. Pollock was employed at Haviland Drainage in Haviland and had attended Olive Branch Church of God in Rockford.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his companion, Brigette Wicker of Van Wert; two daughters, London Taylor Pollock of Arkansas and Bailey Marie Pollock of Van Wert; two brothers, Terry Lee (Tam) Pollock of Antwerp and Devon Kent Pollock of Van Wert; a sister, Mandy (Greg) Black of Van Wert; two nieces; one stepniece; two stepnephews, and a stepgreat-niece.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Pastor Steven G. Waterman officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.
Viewing hours are 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at the funeral home.

MILLER
Rita B. Miller, 87, of Grover Hill, died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Lincolnway Home in Ridge Township, Van Wert County.
She was born December 20, 1917, in Ottoville, the daughter of the late Jacob and Emma J. (John) Thitoff. On June 20, 1942, she married John C. Miller, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Miller had previously worked at the Paulding County Board of Elections and for Goddard’s Grocery in Grover Hill. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Delphos and of the Grover Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She spent many evenings bowling and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include four sons, Larry (Deb) Miller of Van Wert, Lonnie (Sue) Miller and Jim (Mary Jo) Miller, both of Grover Hill and Roger (Deb) Miller of Convoy; a brother, Donald “Pug” (Margaret) Thitoff of Celina; one sister, Agnes Stewart of Delphos, nine grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Mansfield, Craig (Terika) Miller, Rhonda (Bill) Bates, Tim (Jackie) Miller, Tony Miller, Kerby Miller, Kalyn Miller, Dustin Miller and Rob (Vicki) Miller, and seven great-grandchildren, Cyler Miller, Codi Jo Miller, Mikayla Mansfield, Blake Miller, Tristin Miller, Morgan Miller and Baylee Miller.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Pete, Syl, Vince and Dick Thitoff, and a great-granddaughter, Paislie Dickinson Miller.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul W. Miller and Father Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will be in Middle Creek Cemetery in Grover Hill.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the funeral home.

NEWLAND
Adam Scott Newland, 17, of Delphos, died at noon on Friday, June 3, 2005, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born July 23, 1987, in Lima, the son of Mark and Kelly (McBride) Newland, both of whom survive in Delphos.
Adam was a junior at Delphos Jefferson High School, where he played football and was a member of FFA, and was employed at Taco Bell in Delphos. He enjoyed karate and any sport, but his first love was art. He loved to draw and enjoyed school, jokes and comedy. He always had a smile on his face. He was interested in motorcycles and enjoyed working with his dad and fixing things himself on his own bike.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Ryan Newland, at home; his paternal grandmother, Martha Newland of Lima; maternal grandparents, Gary and Wilma McBride of Delphos, and maternal great-grandparents, Ray and Delores McBride of Delphos.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Edward K. Newland; a great-grandmother, Nina Newland, and a cousin, Aaron McBride.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, in the Delphos Jefferson High School gymnasium, located on Ohio 66, with the Rev. David Howell officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, in Ward Cemetery.
Calling hours are 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday in the school gym.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Harter & Schier Funeral Home in Delphos.
SMITH
Michele Kay Smith, 32, of Delphos, died at 4:13 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, due to a traffic accident.
She was born December 14, 1972, in Lima, the daughter of William and Sharon (Martin) Smith, both of whom survive in Delphos.
Miss Smith was employed at Schnipke Engraving Company in Ottoville, where she had worked on the factory floor before moving to a position in the office. She was a 1991 graduate of Delphos Jefferson High School and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan who held season tickets. She also enjoyed – and lived for – her nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, William (Jenny) Smith of Grover Hill; one sister, Amanda (Chad) Kyler of Delphos; maternal grandparents Joseph and Mary Martin, and nieces and nephews Kobe, Kaden, Kayla and Kylee Smith and Emma Kyler.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Leroy and Mary Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Harter & Schier Funeral Home in Delphos, with the Rev. Terry Martin officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Delphos.
Calling hours are 5-8 p.m. Sunday, June 5, and from 2-8 p.m. Monday, June 8, at the funeral home.

CROW
Gary Dale Crow, 61, of Van Wert, died at 12:49 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, at Van Wert County Hospital in Van Wert.
He was born October 24, 1943, in Lima, the son of Goldie E. (Stout) Crowe, who survives in Lima, and the late Raymond H. Crowe. He was formerly married to Shirley (Heppeard) Thompson.
Mr. Crow was a truck driver and attended First Baptist Church in Van Wert .
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Gary Dale (Gervaise) Crowe II (Thompson) of Mansfield; one daughter, Lisa Crowe of Lima; a brother, James (Janice) Crowe of Harrod; one sister, Janice Crowe Odenweller of Lima, and two grandchildren, Tara and Jasmine Thompson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Gene Crowe.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at Harter & Schier Funeral Home in Delphos, with the Rev. Steve Robinson and Rev. Bob Wardle officiating. Burial will be in King Cemetery near Middle Point.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the funeral home.

SHAFFER
Helen Pauline Shaffer, 88, of Rockford, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2005, at Laurels of Shane Hill in Rockford.
She was born July 27, 1916, in Van Wert, the daughter of the late Frank and Bessie (Brown) Krugh. On December 25, 1936, she married Vergil Shaffer, who survives.
Mrs. Shaffer was a secretary, homemaker and helped on the family farm. She was a 1932 graduate of Ohio City-Liberty High School and enjoyed reading, painting and her family. She was a member of Ohio City Church of God, but had also attended Olive Branch Church of God and Calvary Evangelical Church in Van Wert.
In addition to her husband of 68 years, she is survived by a son, Marvin (Vickie) Shaffer of Galena; one daughter, Carolyn (Roger) Jamieson of Van Wert; a sister, Mae Piper of Hamilton; five grandchildren, Michael Jamieson, Jody (Brian) O’Neill, Julie (Bill) Workman, Lisa (Tobin) Juday and Doug Shaffer, and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two infant brothers, and a grandson, Gary Jamieson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Pastor Steven G. Waterman of Olive Branch Church of God officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Ohio City.
Viewing hours are 2-7 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at the funeral home.
