98, of Van Wert, died at 6:45 pm. Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert. She was born March 21, 1905, in York Township, Van Wert County, the daughter of the late Nathan and Sarah (Roush) Dunifon. On September 6, 1930, she married Sherman H. Wallace, who died January 7, 2000. Mrs. Wallace was a 1925 graduate of Van Wert High School and Cincinnati Missionary Training School and worked for a year at a children's home in Helena, Mont. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Van Wert, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of United Methodist Women. Survivors include a son, David (Nancy) Wallace of New Haven, Ind.; three daughters, Phyllis (Walter) Koch of Elida, Marlene (Jack) McHenney of Van Wert and Naomi (Rex) Moore of Decatur, Ind.; 14 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Doyt and Thomas Dunifon, and a sister, Mable Strickler. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 24, at First United Methodist Church in Van Wert, the Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert. Calling hours are 3:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 23, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert. Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Mrs. Wallace to First United Methodist Church-Hospice or the Activities Fund of Vancrest Health Care Center.
Evelyn M. Sullivan
September 21, 1915 - October 30, 2004
89, of Hamilton, died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2004, at Hospice of Cincinnati.
She was born September 21, 1915, in Van Wert, the daughter of the late Floyd and Edna (Hendricks) Mercer. She married Thomas W. Sullivan, who died April 14, 1965.
Mrs. Sullivan had retired from Bethesda Hospitals in Cincinnati. While in Van Wert, she had worked in the offices of Dr. Walter Scheidt and Dr. N.L. Marxen.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Lee Baltzell of Cincinnati; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, James Baltzell.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Tuesday, November 2, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, the Rev. Lance O'Donnell officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery in Ridge Township.
Calling hours are 10 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati.
Evelyn A. Coffelt

88, of Van Wert died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert. She was born July 19, 1914, in Thomasboro, Ill., the daughter of the late Joseph and Clara (Arnold) Vaske. On Oct. 19, 1938, she married Harold Coffelt, who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1971. Mrs. Coffelt was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary of The Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert. Survivors include one daughter, Judy Good of Van Wert; one son, Ron Coffelt of Delphos; a brother, Ralph Vaske of Ohio City; one sister, Betty Krugh of Van Wert; 12 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Rosalyn Fisher; three brothers, Joseph, Larry and Raymond Vaske, and three sisters, Elsie Vaske, Anita Cera and Frances Baird.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of The Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert, the Rev. Joseph M. Schmelzer officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, where a parish rosary service will be held at 7:45 p.m.
Evelyn Sunderland
November 09, 1925 - December 26, 2004
79, of Van Wert, died at 12:27 p.m. Sunday, December 26, 2004, at Wayne Hospital in Greenville. She was born November 9, 1925, in Huntington, Ind., the daughter of the late Leo and Edith (Pfister) Ness. She was married to Wilbur Sunderland, who died May 11, 1993.
Mrs. Sunderland was a registered nurse at Van Wert County Hospital. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 5803, both in Van Wert. She also belonged to Elks Lodge 1197, Women of the Moose in Van Wert and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia.
Survivors include a son, Jay (Barbara) Sunderland of Convoy; two daughters, Cindi (Jim) Koontz of Greenville and Margaret Palmer of Danville, Ill.; one sister, Margaret Gatchell of Indianapolis, Ind.; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John L. Ness, and a sister, Lucille Fisher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 8, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Father Charles Obinwa officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Van Wert County Council on Aging.
Evelyn Whetstone
September 11, 1915 - January 06, 2004
88, of Van Wert, died at 2:27 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at Van Wert County Hospital in Van Wert. She was born September 11, 1915, in Decatur, Ind., the daughter of the late Henry and Ada (Drumond) Yocum. She married William Whetstone, who died in 1987. Mrs. Whetstone was a member of Victory Church and Pentecostal Church, both in Van Wert. Survivors include a sister, Margaret Smith of Rockford; two granddaughters, and two great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her only child, Ronald Shinabery; two brothers, Doyle and John Yocum; a sister, Doris Wittung, and a daughter-in-law, Beverly Height Shinabery Fields. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 10, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, the Rev. Darryl Ramey officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery. Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday, January 9, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Mrs. Whetstone to Community Health Professionals/Visiting Nurses.
GARY L. GRIBLER
January 30, 1945 - December 27, 2003
68, of Van Wert, died at 6 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Fort Wayne, Ind. He was born January 30, 1945, in Van Wert, the son of the late Arthur and Nellie (Fowler) Gribler. Mr. Gribler was a 1963 graduate of Van Wert High School and a graduate of Purdue University. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. Following military service, he served on the staff of former U.S. Senator Mike Gravel of Alaska and for the past 10 years has been a drywall painting contractor in the Fort Wayne area. While in Van Wert, he attended Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Survivors include a brother, Dan (Edie) Gribler of Douglasville, Ga.; one nephew, David Gribler of Atlanta, Ga., and a niece, Nannette (Brian) Zimmerman of Virginia Beach, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Pastor Lance O'Donnell officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, with military graveside honors performed by the combined honor guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 and American Legion Post 178, both of Van Wert. Calling hours are 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Mr. Gribler to a charity of donor's choice.
FRANK J. BARTAL
MARCH 29, 1931 - AUGUST 07, 2004
73, of Van Wert, died at 4:55 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at Van Wert Manor nursing home in Van Wert. He was born March 29, 1931, in Dillonville, the son of the late Michael and Rozella (Edvi) Bartal. On June 16, 1951, he married Margaret Reidenbach, who survives.
Mr. Bartal was an employee of General Electric Company in Decatur, Ind., for 45 years. He was a 1950 graduate of the former Ridge High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was a member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Gregory (Heather) Bartal of Van Wert; one brother, James (Virginia) Bartal of Anderson, N.C.; two sisters, Rose Binkley of Batavia and Irene Fisli of Los Altos Hills, Calif., and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, William, and one sister, Mary.
Private family graveside services will be conducted at Ridge Cemetery near Middle Point, with the Rev. Joe Weiss officiating. Graveside military rites will be performed by the combined honors unit of American Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both of Van Wert. There will be no calling hours.
