100, of Convoy, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Convoy Care Center. She was born April 18, 1903, in Convoy, the daughter of the late Jacob "Jake" and Cora (Paxson) Stevenson. Ms. Essex was an employee of the former DWG plant in Van Wert and worked at the Van Wert YWCA from 1955-1988. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Krick of Van Wert; two grandsons, Jon West of Van Wert and Russ (Cathy) Krick of Convoy; three great-granddaughters, Aimee (Duane) Shears of Niles, Mich., and Alicia (Jamie) Krick of Convoy; a great-great-granddaughter, Shayla N. Shears of Niles, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. There will no funeral services or visitation.
Ivan D. "Stan" Standiford

65, of Van Wert, died at 11:19 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2004, at Van Wert Manor nursing home in Van Wert. He was born January 25, 1939, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the son of the late Paris L. and Hazel D. Standiford. Mr. Standiford was a retired employee of International Harvester. There are no listed survivors. There will be funeral services or visitation. Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens in Fort Wayne.
Helen M. Rager

81, of Van Wert, died at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Van Wert County Hospital. She was born Jan. 28, 1921, in Grover Hill, the daughter of the late Ezra L. and Mamie L. (Fouts) Rager. Miss Rager had been an employee of the Dr. James Jarvis family for more than 40 years. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant Church in Van Wert and also recently had been attending First Baptist Church in Van Wert. Survivors include two brothers, Glen (Joan) Rager and Ralph E. (Joan) Rager, both of Van Wert; a sister, Irene (Rolland) Blockberger of Delphos, and several nieces and nephews, Lowell and Marlin Cummins, Kathy Fleming, Carol Purcell, Dan Rager, Bruce Rager, John Rager, Barbara Cox, David Blockberger, Kay Osting, Diane Boratko and Susan Spears. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in rural Van Wert County. Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Preferred memorial is to Gideons International.
Joan Williman Brazen

Joan Williman Brazen, 75, of Van Wert, died at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2002, at 1152 Rosalie Drive in Van Wert. She was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Van Wert, the daughter of the late Clarence and Emily (Snyder) Williman. On Dec. 17, 1950, she married Francis R. "Sam" Brazen, who died Aug. 23, 1994. Mrs. Brazen was the first director and teacher at Thomas Edison Center from 1968-1974. She was then employed by the Van Wert County Department of Human Services from 1975-1987 and was the former executive director of Van Wert Campfire Inc. She was a member of Van Wert County Hospital Twig III, a board member of the Challenged Higher Clubhouse Advisory Board, a volunteer at Brumback Library in Van Wert and Thomas Edison Center, was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and also a member of the church choir for more than 50 years. She was a recipient of the YWCA Women of Achievement Award in 2001 and had been a member of the Van Wert Alumni Band. She had attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Findlay College. Survivors include two sons, Francis E. "Ed" (Chris) Brazen of Ada and James D. (Annette) Brazen of Dayton; three daughters, Deborah J. Moser and Rebecca A. (Ed) Wells, both of Van Wert, and Laura J. (John) Gaddy of Delphos; 14 grandchildren, Jordan (Kris) Hamilton, Joshua Brazen, Rob, Chad, Stephenie and Jamie Moser, Sarah, Erin, Leah and Evan Wells, Melanie and Nate Gaddy, Stephanie and Ben Stoner and Zachary Brazen; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Seth Moser and Dylan Colwell; two brothers, Robert (Eva) Williman of Findlay and Ned (Marilyn) Williman of Englewood; three sisters, Margaret Fleming of Van Wert, Mildred Radabaugh of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Betty Homer of West Lafayette, Ind., and two sisters-in-law, Jeannette Williman of Van Wert and Sara Williman of Fort Wayne, Ind. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Ian Brazen, and four brothers, Charles, Maurice, Jack and Walter Williman. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, the Rev. James C. Dunaway officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 2-9 p.m. Thursday at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert and from 10-11 a.m. at the church on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Van Wert Special Olympics, First United Methodist Church or Community Health Professionals Hospice.
Jennie C. Kemp

91, of Haviland, died at 3 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at Dallas Lamb Foundation Home in Payne. She was born March 15, 1912, in Haviland, the daughter of the late Jesse and Dolly Anne (Comadoll) Kemp. Miss Kemp retired from General Electric Company in Fort Wayne, Ind., after 30 years of service. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Briceton. Survivors include several cousins. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter and Marwood Kemp. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 11, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, the Rev. Joe Allen officiating. Burial will be in Middle Creek Cemetery in Grover Hill. Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are to St. John's Lutheran Church in Briceton.
Josephine (Gutierrez) Mullen
September 27, 1927 - April 04, 2005
77, of Van Wert, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2005, at her residence.
She was born September 27, 1927, in Lansing, Mich., the daughter of the late Longino and Conception (Castenda) Marez. She first married John Gutierrez, who preceded her in death. On May 10, 1997, in Van Wert, she married Frederick S. Mullen Jr., who survives at home.
Mrs. Mullen retired from Aeroquip after 15 years of service. Most of her life was spent raising her family and she also worked at Van Wert Manufacturing Company and did house cleaning and ironing for many families in Van Wert. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, its Rosary Altar Society, Catholic Ladies of Columbia, Wapakoneta Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 178 in Van Wert, Wapakoneta American Legion Auxiliary and was a TWIG volunteer for Van Wert County Hospital.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by six sons, John (Paula) Gutierrez of Paulding, Gil (Denise) Gutierrez, Dan Gutierrez and David (Marsha) Gutierrez, all of Van Wert, Ron (Pat) Gutierrez of Alpharetta, Ga., and Randy (Jeanene) Gutierrez of Rockford; five daughters, Diann (Jeff) Ebel of Grover Hill, Sue Szuch of Elida, Lou (Steve) Biberstine of Ohio City, Bernadine (Klayton) Hooper of Cloverdale and Mariea (Dan) Moreland of Van Wert; a sister, Mary Torres of Grand Rapids, Mich., two brothers, Salvadore Marez of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Genero Marez of Atlanta, Ga.; 23 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa; one sister, Connie Trevino, and a son-in-law, Dave Szuch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, April 8, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Father Charles Obinwa officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.
Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, where The Rosary will be recited at 8 Thursday evening.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church and School and the TWIG association of Van Wert County Hospital.
Joy Belle Dally
September 14, 1943 - May 12, 2003
59 of Van Wert, Ohio died on Monday evening May 12, 2003 at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne Indiana. She was born on September 14, 1943 in Fredericksburg Virginia to the late Herman R.B. Dally and Troas Dally Jacoby who survives in Kendallille Indiana. Other survivors include: one Brother, Herman (Judy) Dally of Defiance Ohio, one Step-Sister, Pat (George) Holmes of Wolcottville Indiana, one Niece, Ashley Dally of Defiance Ohio, and one nephew, Martin Dally of Defiacne Ohio. She was preceded in death by her father, Herman R.B. Dally and her Step-father, Sanford Jacoby. Ms. Dally was a teacher in the Lincolnview School System. She was a graduate of Defiance High School, received her BS Degree from Defiance College and her MS Degree from Bowling Green State University. She also formerly taught at Continental and Delta Ohio. She was a member of the National Education Association, the Ohio Education Association, and the Van Wert County Harness Horsemen Association. Services will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2003, 11:00 A.M. at Brickner Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Schroeder officiating. Grave side Committal Services will be at Riverside Cemetery in Defiance Ohio Immediately following the service. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9:30 A.M. till the time of services. Memorial Contributions to St. John's United Church of Christ Defiance or to a Charity of the Donor's Choice.
