SPENCER -- Carole J. Wheland, 67, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at her home.
She was the mother of Patricia Veverka of Lodi and mother and mother-in-law of Mark and Samantha Wheland of West Salem.
Memorial services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Spencer, with the Rev. George Swartzfager and Vicar Dee Miklos officiating. Burial will be at Spencer Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Parker & Son Funeral Home in Spencer is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 312 S. Main St., Spencer 44275; or to American Cancer Society, 1900 W. Market St., Akron 44313.
She was born Sept. 22, 1931 in Akron to Lewis and Freda (Hood) Murphy and married Robert Wheland. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, Robert Wheland Jr. of Spencer; nine grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. John (Darlene) Sekermestrovich of Akron and Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Young of Barberton; and a brother, James Murphy of Atwater.

Ruth Ann Deeter
ASHLAND -- Ruth Ann Deeter, 39, of Ashland, formerly of West Salem, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was the sister of Jo Gallatin of Lodi.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Parker & Son Funeral Home in Lodi, with Jerry Arman officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Homerville.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Ashland County Branch, 107 E. Main St., Ashland 44805.
She was born April 27, 1960 in Oberlin to Richard and Irene (Smith) Gallatin and married Mark Deeter on Aug. 24, 1984. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, Anthony; her mother, Irene Leighliter of Homerville; her grandmother, Lucille Gallatin; sisters, Cheryl Haley and her husband, Dan, of Elyria and Sheila Light of Polk; and a brother, Alan Gallatin and his wife, Sherry, of Homerville.

Ruth Munger
WOOSTER -- Ruth E. Munger, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Wooster Community Hospital.
She was the wife of Kenosha attorney, Earle Munger. He died previously.
Surviving are a son, Bill Munger and daughter-in-law, Linda Hults of Wooster and a daughter, Jean Ainsworth Hartnek and her husband, Lee Hartnek of Tallahassee, Fla.; a granddaughter, Martha Rollin-Soder of Cincinnati and a grandson, Captain Paul Rollin of Pensacola, Fla.; and two great-grandsons of Cincinnati.

Virgil Banfield
WADSWORTH -- Virgil Clyde Banfield, 74, of Wadsworth, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Hospice Care Center in Copley.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, Hillcrest Chapel, corner of Acme and Seville Roads, Wadsworth, with the Rev. Roger Loomis officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call Sunday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born March 19, 1925 in Huntington, W.Va., to Virgil and Sadie (Romans) Banfield and married Myrtie Wellman on Oct. 25, 1946. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children and their spouses, Roger and Francene Banfield and Rickey and Linda Banfield; grandchildren, Renee and Rockey; a brother, Louis Banfield; and a sister, Annalee Henthorn.

Virginia Barnard
MILTON, Fla. -- Virginia Alice Barnard, 78, of Milton, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at a local hospital.
Funeral Mass was held this morning (Saturday) at 10 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Thom Crandall, Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church officiating. Graveside services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Olmsted Falls.
Friends may call Monday from 10 a.m.-noon at Baker Funeral Home in Berea.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Roger M. Barnard of Milton, Fla.; children, Rick Barnard and his wife, Peggy, of Milton, Fla., and Barbara Ames of Brunswick; grand children, Jennifer Godwin (Ricky), Jeffrey Barnard, Kathy, Carol and Becky Ames; and a brother, Bob Creter of Strongsville.

Jewell Adkins
RUSHVILLE -- Jewell P. Adkins, 69, of Rushville, formerly of Wooster, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at her residence.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home in Lancaster, with the Rev. Leonard Hershey officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Fairfield County.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Raymond Adkins; children, Joyce Meglich and her husband, Gary, Anita Tenney, Sheila Powell and Mark Adkins and his wife, Brenda; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Brookie Maynard, Ollie and Pollie Blankinship; brothers, Alley and John Perry; a half-sister, Maxine Mathis; and nieces and nephews.

Verda Shafer
ASHLAND -- Verda E. Shafer, 82, 23 Terrace Drive, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Rhoda Kay McKown of Perrysville.
She was the sister of Lois Mullen and Richard E. Frontz, both of Wooster.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville, with the Rev. Sanford Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at Vermillion Cemetery in Hayesville.
Friends may call Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Ashland County Branch, 107 E. Main St., Ashland; or Hospice of North Central Ohio, Inc., 1605 County Road 1095, Ashland 44805.
She was born Sept. 12, 1916 in Ashland County to Earl E. and Bertha (Shenberger) Frontz and married Frank R. Shafer Sr. He died June 23, 1989.
Other survivors include a son, Frank R. Shafer Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two grandsons; three step-grandchildren; and a brother, William E. Frontz of Palacios, Texas.

Walter Flynn Jr.
RITTMAN -- Walter M. Flynn, Jr., 66, 204 N. Seneca St., died Tuesday night, Aug. 10, 1999, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital.
Friends may call tonight (Thursday) from 6-8, with the services to follow at 8 at Gillman Funeral Home in Rittman. The Rev. Dr. J.A. Burton will officiate.
Graveside services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery in Woodsfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Wayne County Branch, P.O. Box 267, Wooster 44691.
He was born April 26, 1933 in Woodsfield to Walter and Violet (Barr) Flynn Sr. and was married to Jacqueline Flynn. She died Nov. 1, 1987.
Surviving are children, Dan Flynn of Rittman, Doug Flynn and his wife, Denise, of Creston and Mrs. Gerald (Pamela) Fankhauser of Sterling; a grandson; and sisters, Helen Childers of Clinton and Delores Hunt of Doylestown.

Dan Yoder
APPLE CREEK -- Dan J. Yoder, 89, 2628 S. Kansas Road, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 11, 1999, at his home after an 8-month illness.
Services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m . at the residence, with Bishop Dan A. Troyer officiating. Burial will be at Troyer Cemetery, East Union Township, Wayne County.
Friends may call anytime at the residence. Spidell Funeral Home in Mount Eaton is handling arrangements.
He was born Dec. 21, 1909 in Holmes County to John and Katie (Raber) Yoder and married Ida D. Miller on March 7, 1935. She survives.
Other survivors include children, Eli Yoder, Mrs. Melvin D. (Barbara) Stutzman, Mrs. Crist D.A. (Verba) Miller and Mrs. Andy E. (Mattie) Troyer, all of Apple Creek, Abe Yoder, Mrs. William H. (Laura) Miller and Esther Troyer, all of Fredericksburg, Raymond Yoder of the home, Ivan Yoder of Shiloh, Roy Yoder and Mrs. Atlee (Katie) Miller, both of Orrville and Mrs. Joe C. (Anna) Miller of Dalton; 93 grandchildren; 157 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Susan Troyer of New York and Katie Ann Yoder of Dundee.

Mildred Pickel
AKRON -- Mildred L. Pickel, 88, of Akron, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999.
She was the aunt of Don and Jim Hawkins, both of Rittman.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Hennessy-Bagnoli Funeral Home, 339 Southwest Ave., Tallmadge. Burial will be at Hillside Memorial Park in Akron.
Friends may call tonight (Thursday) from 5-8 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Other survivors include a son, Col. Eugene Pickel and his wife, Mary, of Tennessee, and Joy Miller-Schick and her husband, Ron, of Florida; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Frank Hawkins of Florida.
Her husband, Jesse B. Pickel, died previously.

Phyllis Bieri
BUTLER -- Phyllis Ann Bieri, 71, 5246 Teeter Road, died Tuesday afternoon at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Bellville, after an extended illness.
Memorial services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Bunker Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.B. Gomez officiating. Burial will be at Bunker Hill Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home in Loudonville, is handling arrangements.
The family requests contributions be made to Worthington Township Fire Department Rescue Squad; or to Meals on Wheels, Clear Fork Nutrition Center, Butler 44822.
Surviving are children, Robert (Corinne) Bieri, Jon P. Bieri and Donale (Raymond) Swank, all of Butler; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Margaret Stockberger of Utica and Betty Thompson of Butler.
Her husband, Donald W. Bieri, died in 1993.

Donald Hoagland
LOUDONVILLE -- Donald E. "Snowball" Hoagland, 63, 410 N. Spring St., died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 10, 1999, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus, after a brief illness.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home in Loudonville, with the Rev. Howard Burnett officiating. Burial will be at Workman Cemetery, Danville.
Friends may call today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 at the funeral home.
Friends who wish may make contributions to the family.
He was born June 30, 1936 in Knox County to Henry and Margaret (Wise) Hoagland and married Shirley Walpole on April 17, 1963. She survives.
Other survivors include children, Eric Hoagland and his wife, Carol, of Carrington, N.D., Brian Hoagland of Loudonville and Melissa Hoagland of Perrysville; three grandchildren; a brother, Jack Dile of New Castle; and a sister, Janice Cowen of Perrysville.

Elizabeth Witner
KILLBUCK -- Elizabeth A. Witner, 72, 155 W. Grant St., died Wednesday evening, Aug. 11, 1999, at Sunset Skilled Nursing Home in Millersburg, after an extended illness.
Memorial services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Killbuck Veterans of Foreign Wars Social Hall, with the Rev. Larry Hasemeyer officiating.
There will be no calling hours. Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, is handling arrangements.
The family suggests contributions be made to Killbuck VFW Auxiliary; or to Hospice of Holmes or Wayne County.
She was born April 29, 1927 in Akron to Elias P. and Esther E. (Smith) Rogers and married George Raymond Witner. He died Jan. 12, 1933.
Surviving are children, Roger W., Randell L., Pete and Wayne P. Witner and Mrs. Thomas (Liane S.) Eyster, all of Millersburg and Mrs. Mike (Rebecca S.) Pence of Killbuck; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. John (Nina) Justin of LeCanto, Fla., Mrs. Gerald (Wilda) Purdy of Glenmont and Mrs. Vincent (Muriel) Harris of Greentown; brothers, Ted Rogers of Mesa, Ariz., and Charles Rogers of Lakeside (Marble Head); and a dog named Trubble.

Glen Armentrout
CRESTON -- Glen C. Armentrout, 78, 146 N. Main St., died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Cleveland Clinic, after a short illness.
Services will be Saturday at 1:30 a.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston, with the Rev. Jack Kabeller officiating. Burial will be at Creston Maple Mound Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home, or one hour prior to the services.
Memorial contributions may be made to Creston Community Park, in care of Kate Slater, 176 S. Main St., Creston 44217.
He was born April 17, 1921 in McGuffey to Richard and Rebecca (Rice) Armentrout and married Elizabeth Kabeller on April 20, 1946. She survives.
Other survivors include children, Annabel Kabeller of Wadsworth, Rebecca Blough and Lenny Preattle, Helen Gray, Elizabeth "Andy" (Ron) Webb, Glenna "Truddie" (David) Wilkinson and Bill Armentrout, all of Creston; grandchildren, Melissa Carter, Becky "Botchie" Blough, Holly Crum, Kenneth and Jason Gray, Davey Wilkinson, Amy Marshall, Joe Kabeller and Chris Preattle; great-grandchildren, Kevin, Kassidy, Haley, Derek, Oliver, Alex, Alfredo, Jacquelyn, Elizabeth and Taylor Billy Jane; a brother, Howard Armentrout of Ravenna; and a faithful companion, Angel.

Robert Dunlap
CRESTON -- Robert L. Dunlap, 75, 9208 Cleveland Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center in Canton, after a long illness.
Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston, where the Moose Lodge will hold services. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Creston Rescue Squad, in care of Deb Crow, 106 Carol Drive, Creston 44217.
He was born Sept. 3, 1923 in Tiffin to Harvey and Vernice (Poland) Dunlap and married Helen Schaad on June 28, 1952. She survives.
Other survivors include children and their spouses, Margo and Monte Holland of Creston, Mary and Vaughn Burr of Rittman and Dennis and Belinda Dunlap of Wooster; grandchildren, Hubert Holland, Frankie and Robert Burr, Kelly, Jordan and Chetley Dunlap; a great-grandson, Austin Dunlap; and an adopted great-granddaughter, Destiny Minehart.

Robert Culbertson
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Robert W. Culbertson, 80, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Wooster, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, in Orlando.
Services will be held Tuesday at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, 2811 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, Fla. 32806. Burial will be in Orlando.
Surviving are his wife and a son, both of Orlando, Fla.; and brothers, Wright and Neill Culbertson, both of Wooster.

Waldo Landis
WOOSTER -- Waldo F. Landis, 83, 4005 N. Elyria Road, died Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 11, 1999, at Wooster Community Hospital.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Pittsburg, with the Rev. Gayle Landis officiating. Burial will be at New Pittsburg Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 6-9 p.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster.
Those who wish may make contributions to St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9451 Ashland Road, Wooster; or New Pittsburg Fire Department, in care of Roger Kamp, 1466 Township Road 35, Wooster 44691.
He was born Sept. 19, 1915 in Wooster to Edward and Clara (Firestone) Landis and married Charlotte Martin on Aug. 24, 1941. She survives.
Other survivors include children and their spouses, Virgil D. and Elizabeth Landis of Strongsville, Rachel D. and Gerald Krabill of Wooster, Rebecca D. Simmons of North Canton and David M. and the Rev. Gayle Landis of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Andrea Hedges, Donna Car, Jennifer Winter, Jill Ackerman, Michael, Mark and Ryan Simmons, Nicholas, Zachary and Megan Landis; and four great-grandchildren.

Harry Bechtel
WOOSTER -- Harry D. Bechtel, 82, 8169 Cleveland Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Smithville-Western Care Center, Wooster.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, Sherwood Chapel, Wooster, with Pastor Douglas Wantz officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call Friday from 3-8 p.m. at the funeral home, or one hour prior to the services.

He was born April 26, 1917 in Williamsburg, Pa., to Harvey and May (Cridge) Bechtel and married Betty J. Benchoff on Nov. 23, 1939. She survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Linda (Charles) Copley, Sharon (John) Johnson and Becky (Mike) Murphy, all of Wooster; grandchildren, David Copley, Melanie Copley, Doug Johnson, Julie Dagley, Robin Croft, Tina and Tara McIntire; great-grandchildren, Kara Dagley and Devin Johnson; and sisters, Dorothy Colbert of Williamsburg, Pa., and Frances Robison of Martinsburg, Pa.
