Dr. Lester Glick
MADISON, Miss. -- Dr. Lester J. Glick, 84, Madison, Miss., died peacefully at home on Saturday, March 1, 2003.
He was born June 6, 1918, to Christian C. and Maggie (Yoder) Glick.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris (Miller); brother, Leon Glick of Millersburg; sisters, Grace Glick of Walnut Creek and Carol Kaufman (Paul) of Arcadia, Fla.; children Ron (Mary Bickel), Dr. Christina Glick (Edward Guillot Jr.), Priscilla Clark, Byron (Michele Gast) and grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, and Daniel Glick, Mathew, Michael, and Megan Puckett; and Shane and Tina Clark.
Lester was born on a farm near Sugarcreek, Ohio and rose to become a respected social work educator and practitioner. With degrees from Goshen College, Ohio State, and Washington University, he started the social work program at Goshen College and the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Southern Mississippi, served as an associate dean at Syracuse University School of Social Work, and taught at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. He also held a number of leadership roles in residential programs for troubled youth, including Boys' Village, Smithville, Ohio, The Eckerd Foundation and The Florida Sheriff's Ranch.
His Mennonite faith led him to a life of personal as well as professional service.
During World War II he was in the Alternative Service for conscientious objectors, working in a number of mental health institutions and serving as a subject for a groundbreaking University of Minnesota starvation experiment.
Following his retirement, he worked with churches on Family Life programs, created the Charis Counseling Center at Bahia Vista Mennonite Church, led disaster recovery efforts at Homestead and Sandford, Florida for the Mennonite Disaster Service, and served as counselor and role model for many of his fellow human beings.
He has been an active member of St. Matthews Methodist Church in Madison, Miss. since moving there in 2001.
Lester loved children and is widely remembered for having a ready smile or a friendly ear depending on what they needed. His love for Doris and his family, especially his grandchildren, was a source of great strength for all. Near the end of his life, at the behest of the family, he authored a comprehensive autobiography and compilation of Glick family history that included interviews and travels to sites of family roots. No story of Lester Glick would be complete without mention of his many avocations including baking, gardening and travel. Whatever else might be going on, Lester could be found singing hymns under his breath as he tended his flowers, fruit trees, and gardens, or baked his famous cinnamon rolls. When he left his pots and plants he often went far, visiting all 50 states, all of Europe, Central America, and New Zealand.
He will be remembered fondly by those left behind, as he wakes from this sweet troubled dream on earth to eternal life in Heaven.
A memorial service will be held at St. Matthews Methodist Church in Madison, Miss,m at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2003, with eventual interment in the Walnut Creek Mennonite Church Graveyard in Ohio.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to Goshen College, in care of College Relations Office, 1700 S. Main St., Goshen, Ind. 46526.

She ministered to four generations of Catholic elementary school students and their families as a teacher and principal. Thirty-three years of her teaching career were spent at St. Joseph School in Cuyahoga Falls. Those years, along with 10 spent at Holy Family School in Stow established her as a friend and support to many in the area. In the 1950s Sister was assigned to St. Luke's School in Lakewood. She was principal there from 1958-1964. Always enjoying contact with young people, Sister Eugenia, during her "free time," in the summers, cooked at the CYO Camp Isaac Jogues on Lake Erie in Madison. She moved to the Motherhouse Richfield in 1988, where for a time, she served as local leader for the sisters. She also volunteered as a proofreader for the Catholic Universe Bulletin until 2000.
Her ministry of prayer for and with the Sisters of Charity continued until her death. She considered it a blessing to have had such a long life in the congregation and often expressed the wish that each of Sisters would have as long and as happy a life as she had.
