WOOSTER -- John William Wilson, 84, of Wooster, died Sunday, February 16, 2003, at West View Manor Nursing Home.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Rulon officiating. Interment will be at the Mannington Memorial Park, Mannington, W.Va.
Friends may call tonight (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. at the McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.
Born June 8, 1918, in Fairmont, W.Va., he was the son of Charlie and Bessie (Wilson) Wilson.
He retired from Crown Steel in 1982 after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Highland Church of God and was a member of the Mustang C.B. Club.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lucille Haught Wilson, whom he married September 9, 1952; a daughter, Lavon (Charles) Messer of Wooster; two grandchildren, Shana Shriver of Lawton, Okla. and Joe Jones of Wooster; two great-grandchildren, Ron Shriver of Pittsburg, Kan. and Adam Shriver of Shreve; three great-great-grandchildren, Nathan Shriver of Pittsburg, Kan., Justin Fleming and Kayla Shriver, both of Shreve; a nephew, Don Haught and a niece, Mary Kelley, both of Wooster.
Walter Engle
MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Walter Harry Engle, 79, of Loughlin Drive, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at his residence.
Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Palmer Funeral Home, 1109 Lincolnway West, Osceola, Ind. with the Rev. Doug Erickson officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

He was born July 4, 1923, in South Bend, Ind. to Harry H. and Marie (Gelnet) Engle and married Virginia Belle Hinz on Sept. 18, 1943, in Harlingen, Texas. She died Sept. 11, 1982.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
In 1984 he retired from the South Bend Tribune, where he was employed as a printer. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Surviving are his five children, Dallas (Joyce) Engle of Ephrata, Pa., the Rev. Darrell (Dianne) Engle of Plum Branch, S.C., Dolores (Robert) Rast of Mishawaka, Ind., Kenneth (Lois) Engle of Aiken, S.C. and Kevin (Charline) Engle of Wooster; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mary Ransberger of Mishawaka, Ind.
William Hershberger
WOOSTER -- William Larry Hershberger, 52, of Wooster, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Wooster Community Hospital.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home with the Rev. M. Dean Hammond officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville.

He was born Dec. 24, 1950, in Lodi to John and Virginia (Sears) Hershberger.
He served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a service technician for Sprint for 33 years.
Surviving are his wife, Connie Smith Hershberger, whom he married April 20, 1984; sons, Chris Hershberger of Columbus and Bill Hershberger of Westlake; stepdaughters, Kim Bailey and Shelley Collins, both of Wooster; stepson, Tim (Donna) Collins of Wooster; four grandchildren; brothers, Jeff and Dave Hershberger of Orrville, Mike Hershberger of Wooster and Roger Hershberger; a sister, Denise North of Jeromesville and his mother.
His father died previously.
Mary Matthews
SAVANNAH -- Mary May Matthews, 49, of Bailey Street, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Samaritan Regional Health System, following an extended illness.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Heyl Funeral Home in Ashland with the Rev. Roger Schwartzwalder officiating. Burial will be at Ashland County Memorial Park.

She was born Oct. 13, 1953, in Ashland to Harold and Phillis (Stine) Lamb and married Larry "Jay" Matthews on June 15, 1973. He survives.
She had been a resident of Ashland County most of her life where she was a homemaker and a caregiver.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Savannah, and the Father's Heart Fellowship of Savannah. She also was active with the Parents of Chronically Ill Children Support Group, and the Ashland Eagles Auxiliary.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Jesse Matthews of Mansfield, Christopher Matthews and Mark Matthews, both of Savannah; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kim and John Hildreth of Butler and Brenda and Tim Rhoads of Creston and three brothers, Guy Lamb and Harold Lamb, both of Creston and Frank Lamb of Tampa, Fla.
Her parents died previously.
Richard Newkirk
WOOSTER -- Richard "Dick" Newkirk, 68, of Wooster, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Akron City Hospital.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster with the Rev. Robert Meyer officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born Feb. 19, 1934, in Millbrook to Benjamin J. and Delphia (Grubb) Newkirk.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He worked in the shipping department at Wooster Products for 20 years, retiring in 1996 and prior to that had worked for the Wooster Glass Co.
He was a member of Lamplighters, AMVETS, American Legion Post 68 of Wooster and the Eagles Lodge of Wooster.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia I. Merritt; sisters, Nina (William) Vincent of Holmesville and Vesta Ginther of Brunswick and brothers, Sonny Newkirk and Guy Newkirk, both of Indianapolis, Ind.
A sister, Beulah Horn and a brother, Rex Newkirk, died previously.
Grace Reeves
DOYLESTOWN -- Grace E. Reeves died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Clines as celebrant. Burial will be at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

She was born in Akron to Herman A. and Maryann (Kline) Wolfe and married James R. Reeves on Oct. 17, 1942. He died in 1978.
She graduated from The University of Akron and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar.
She retired in 1990 from Orrville City Schools as a special education teacher, and formerly taught at Sts. Peter & Paul School.
She was a resident of Doylestown and member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. She enjoyed bird watching and antiquing.
Surviving are her daughters, Judy (Eugene) Breedlove of Chardon, Tricia K. Reeves of Doylestown, Carol A. (Edward) James of Albuquerque, N.M.; five granddaughters; a sister, Rita (Jack) Krosse of Marshallville and brothers, William F. Wolfe of Rensselaer Falls, N.Y., Dr. Herman P. (Carolyn) Wolfe of Mentor.
In addition to her husband a brother, Bernard E. Wolfe and a sister, Annabelle G. Bunce, died previously.
Ethene Smith
BELLVILLE -- Ethene Jean Smith, 63, of state Route 97, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after a short illness.
Memorial services were held Monday, Dec. 23, at Church of Christ at Richland County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church at 741 Mill Road, Bellville.
She was born April 25, 1939, in McKeesport, Pa., to Henry and Anne (Harris) Smith and was a 1946 graduate of Wooster High School. She attended The Ohio State University and earned her nursing degree from the former Malabar School of Nursing.
She was a licensed practical nurse, having worked at the former Mercy Hospital in Mount Vernon, was a private duty nurse, and also worked at Woodlawn Nursing Home in Mansfield for many years and Lexington Court Care Center.
She was a member of Church of Christ at Richland County in Bellville and enjoyed reading.
Surviving are sons, Doug L. Kelly Jr. of Mount Vernon and Sean P. Kelly of Butler; a granddaughter; and sisters, Sarah (Paul) Johnson of Wisconsin and Shirley (Cal) MacGillivray of Riverside, Calif.
Ervin Sommers
LOUISVILLE -- Ervin W. Sommers, 81, of Louisville, went home to be with the Lord Sunday evening, Feb. 16, 2003.
As a building contractor and owner of Sommers Home Improvement, he built many commercial and residential buildings throughout Stark County and vicinity. Many buildings stand as a memorial of his commitment to the Lord and his skilled ability. These structures include The Lodge and surrounding buildings at Camp Luz in Kidron, and the library and offices at the Chapel in Marlboro. With the Mennonite disaster service and worldwide missions, he traveled throughout the United States and around the world to places such as Venezuela, British Honduras, Belize, Brazil, and many other countries to help thousands of less fortunate people. Ervin was a member of the Chapel in Marlboro and served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mary Sommers, his brothers, Myron and Melvin and his daughter, Kay Sommers Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby (Sommers) Sommers, who recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with Ervin on Hilton Head Island, along with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he is also survived by three children, Rita Sommers (Adrian) Hukills of Louisville, Ray (fiancee, Linetta Ligenfelter) Sommers of Marietta, Ga. and Keith (Heidi) Sommers of Louisville; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther (Reuben) Kandel of Berlin, Mary Ellen Stephenson of Michigan and Ruth (Vernice) Bixler of Dalton and two brothers, Ray (JoAnn) Sommers of Barberton and Dale (Elonet) Sommers of Orrville.
Ervin Sommers was deeply loved and respected and was considered a wonderful role model to all the little great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
Interment services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Beech Mennonite Church Cemetery with a Memorial Service to be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Chapel in Marlboro with Pastor Joel Cochran and Ron Christiansen officiating.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Stier-Israel Funeral Home of Louisville.

Lester Welch
LAKEVILLE -- Lester L. Welch, 90, 14055 Holmes County Road 100, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 18, in Wintersong of Hayesville, following a one-month illness.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville, with the Rev. Randy Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 26, 1912, in Vincent, to Herman and Jessie (Thompson) Welch.
He was a Lakeville resident since 1968, coming from Mansfield. He was a 42-year employee of Columbia Gas Transmission, working at Barlow, Lexington, Ky., Wellington, Weaver Station and Nashville plants.
He was a member of Little Washington Congregational Church, the Lakeville Booster Club, and a former member of the Lakeville Fire Department and the Loudonville Lions Club.
As a young man he was a semi-pro boxer, and later was a catcher and umpire for fast-pitch softball. He was an avid Cleveland Cavalier and Indians fan and he loved fishing and hunting. For many years he raised and showed bantam chickens.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Mary Ann Welch of Ashland; two daughters and a son-in-law, C. Yvonne Traxler of Mansfield and Patricia and Jerry Szabo of Florence, Colo.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Welch of Vincent, and Jack Welch of Marietta and two sisters, Gladys Eichmiller and Margaret Wallace, both of Waterford.
His wife, Ceola Linton Welch, died in 1997, a son, Richard H. Welch in 1973, two brothers, Clarence and Delbert Welch, a sister, Twila Johnson and four grandchildren, also died previously.
Virginia Barnhart
MILLERSBURG -- Virginia "Ginny" Barnhart, 65, of Millersburg, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 18, 2003, at her residence, following an extended illness.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, with the Rev. David Carrick officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Millersburg.

She was born Jan. 20, 1938 in Holmes County to Raymond Henry and Jessie Mildred (Rowe) Ames and married Gene Barnhart on Dec. 17, 1956. He survives.
She owned and operated Ginny's Beauty Shop in Millersburg, retiring in 1998.
She was a member of the Millersburg Christian Church and was very active in gardening and growing flowers.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Michael Barnhart of Millersburg and Scott Barnhart of West Palm Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; five brothers, Raymond Ames Jr. of Coshocton, Jack Ames of Carrollton, Dale Ames of Millersburg, Richard Ames of Fredericksburg and Luther Ames of Hudson, Fla. and nine sisters, Martha Gilbert of Coshocton, Janet Rogers of Dover, Barbara Mitchell and Joan Rodhe, both of Wooster, Clara Crider and Betty Engelhardt, both of Millersburg, Millie Greegor of Dalton, Marsha Robinson of Navarre and Shirley Martin of Big Prairie.
A son, Brian Barnhart, two brothers, Bruce Ames and Bill Ames, a sister, Patricia Russell and three infant sisters, died previously.
Eula Grant
FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. -- Eula Mae Grant, 86, 2876 Marine Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at her home, following a short illness.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home, 108 E. Sherman St., Lynn, Ind. with Pastor James Chronister officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Hollansburg.

She was born Feb. 11, 1917 in Knox County to Walter and Ida Mary (Lifer) Workman.
She was a housewife and a member of the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are two daughters, Esther (Richard) Nicholson of Fountain City, Ind. and Ruth (Lee) Lambert of Woodsborp, Md.; a son, David (Peg) Grant of Frankfort, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Willard Grant died in 2001, an infant daughter, a daughter, Naomi Knisley, three brothers, Glenn, Edwin and Harry, a sister, Annabelle and a great-grandson, died previously.
