James Slater
SIDNEY -- James P. Slater, 78, of Sidney, died Tuesday evening, March 18, 2003, at Dorothy Love Retirement Community in Sidney, following a period of declining health.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Creston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at Creston Maple Mound Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

He was born Aug. 9, 1924 in Lodi to Carl H. and Dorothy (Parmelee) Slater Sr. and married Betty E. Plants on Sept. 27, 1946. She died March 8, 2000.
He was a member of the Creston High School Class of 1943 and graduated from Wooster Business College.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943-1946 serving in the Asiatic Pacific Threatre. He was injured at Iwo Jima and was recipient of the Purple Heart.
He retired from Ohio Bridge in 2000 and had previously worked at United Steel Fabricators in Wooster and Frantz Brothers in Sidney.
He had been a member of Creston and Wooster United Methodist Churches, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4239 of Sidney, American Legion Post 217 in Sidney, Sidney Moose Lodge, served on the Sidney Tree Board and Seville Masonic Lodge No. 74 F.&A.M.
He made his home in Wooster prior to moving to Sidney in 1978. He was an avid fisherman and golfer and loved the outdoors.
Surviving are four children and their spouses, Rebecca and Rex Weaver of Medina, Cynthia and Larry Snyder of Wooster, Douglas and Theresa Slater and David and Robin Slater, all of Sidney; nine grandchildren, Adam and Beth Weaver, Jarrod (Laine) Ogden, James and Jeffery Snyder and Erin, Mitchell, Rachel and Jacob Slater; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter L. and Kate Slater and Carl and Norma Slater Jr., all of Creston and William and Ruth Slater of Rittman; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice and Norman Pamer of Stow and Zella Leaman of Creston and a special friend, Rita Kendall of Sidney.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Wayne Sprang
LOUDONVILLE -- Wayne A. Sprang, 93, of South Jefferson Street, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Colonial Manor Health Care Center, Loudonville, following a long illness.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville with the Rev. John Bassman officiating. Burial with military services conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in Loudonville Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born Aug. 29, 1909 in Loudonville to Amos and Elizabeth (Cramer) Sprang.
He was a graduate of Loudonville High School, serving in the US Army during World War II.
He was a clerk in the Loudonville Post Office before his retirement.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Loudonville, Post 257 of the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8586, Perrysville.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Edna (Cochran) Pickett Sprang and a brother, Samuel Sprang of Port Richey, Fla.
Lawrence Van Til
GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. -- Lawrence R. Van Til, 61, of Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in Dearborn, Mich.
He was married for 33 years to Kay Felt, formerly of Shreve, and was the son-in-law of George W. and Betty V. Felt, also formerly of Shreve.
He was born in 1941 in Hammond, Ind.
Mr. Van Til graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1963, and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1966. He began his legal career and became a partner with Butzel, Long, Gust, Klein and Van Zile in Detroit, Mich., where he served for 14 years. He assisted in forming a firm known as Van Til, Kasiborski and Ronayne and later formed Van Til and Associates. Known for his expertise in complex corporate and tax issues, Mr. Van Til was listed in "Best Lawyers in America" in state and local taxation. He was a past chairperson of the State Bar of Michigan Tax Section and the National Association of State Bar Tax Sections.
Avid in his interest for religious, community and civic affairs and combating discrimination, he was a past chairperson of Barat Child and Family Services, the first male and non-Catholic member of the Board of Matrix Human Services (then known as the League of Catholic Women), elder of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, bass in its choir, Moderator of the Presbytery of Detroit, a past director of United Way Community Services and its predecessor United Community Services, the Grosse Pointe Symphony, Presbyterian Development Corporation, and NYCE, Neighbors Concerned about Yacht Club Expansion.
Diagnosed with a congenital heart anomaly in 1972, Mr. Van Til was known as the patient who always kept pace with medical knowledge about his condition, participated actively in his care management and never let it consume his life. In the midst of a personal health crisis, after 9/11/2001, he led in the passage of a resolution by the Presbytery of Detroit affirming the contribution of Arab Americans to religious and community life and deploring ethnic discrimination and terrorism in all forms.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their daughter, Kate, sister, Rose DeGraff of Canton, brothers, Ronald of Lititz, Pa., and Bernard of Des Moines, Iowa, and beloved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, former state representative for the State of Michigan, Riemer Van Til and Tessie Van Til of Holland, Mich.
Mr. Van Til will be interred in the Wooster Cemetery. In addition to services to be held in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., on Sunday, March 23, 2003, there will be a service held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Chapel in Wooster Cemetery where the Rev. Christopher P. Stewart will officiate, with a reception to follow.
Arrangements are being handled by Schlabach Funeral Home in Shreve.

Edith Butzer
FREDERICKSBURG -- Edith Elnora Butzer, 86, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Glendora Health Care Center, following a period of declining health.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Fredericksburg with the Rev. Jeff Graebing officiating. Burial will be at Fredericksburg East Cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was born Oct. 18, 1916, in Elm Grove, Ohio County, W.Va. to Lewis Davis and Otie Bell (Welling) Simms. She married Cloyce A. Butzer on March 16, 1940, at Central Christian Church in Wooster. He died Feb. 19, 2000.
She attended elementary school in Elm Grove, W.Va. and later at Perrysville and graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1934.
She was a member of Fredericksburg Church of Christ and had been active in Fredericksburg Parent Teacher Association and Waynedale Band Boosters. She also was a member of the Jolly 8 and the 24 Club card clubs, and Fredericksburg American Legion Auxiliary. She was a volunteer in many civic activities and the Fredericksburg homecoming.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James and Alison Butzer of Wooster; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and James Butler of Wooster; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three sisters, Mary Stevens and Betty Ransom, both of Butler and Gwendolyn Moffet of DeBray, Fla.
Carol Daugherty
WOOSTER -- Carol Jean Daugherty, 84, of Wooster, entered into eternal rest, Thursday morning, March 20, 2003, at Rittman Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Rittman, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Smithville United Methodist Church, Smithville, with the Rev. Allan Bevere officiating, followed by interment at Wooster Cemetery.
Visitation will be this evening (Friday) from 7-9 Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, Wooster.

Carol Jean was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Hancock County to Ray and Aldia (Taylor) McClelland and moved to Wooster from Wakeman in 1926.
She was a graduate of Wooster Business College and married Ralph E. Daugherty on March 20, 1941, in Wooster. He entered into eternal rest on April 20, 1999.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Rubbermaid for 19 years before retiring in 1980 and previously worked for Ohio Power and Holmes Construction Co.
She was a member of Wooster Hospital Auxiliary and Smithville United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Bethany Ann) Hackett of Avon Lake and Mrs. Duane (Pamela Sue) Singer of Ashland; two sisters, Mary Steuart of Smithville and Mrs. William (Katherine) Burger of West Laco, Texas; five grandsons, Jeffrey A. Hackett, Jason A. Hackett, Jeremy A. Hackett, Benjamin M. Singer and Brandon M. Singer and a great-grandson, Adam Joseph Hackett.
In addition to her parents and her loving husband, she is preceded in death by a brother, Robert McClelland.
Cheryl Dryfuse
WOOSTER -- Cheryl Diane Dryfuse, 60, of Wooster, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at her home.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, Wooster, with the Rev. Robin Myers officiating. Entombment will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.

Born Jan. 28, 1943, in Wooster, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Donna (Sheppard) Gray.
She had worked as a registered nurse at Wooster Community Hospital and at West View Manor Nursing Home and Horn Nursing Home. She was a member of Wooster United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, William Jack Dryfuse, whom she married July 31, 1965; a daughter, Lisa (Thom) Cummons of Wilmington, N.C.; a son, Mark Dryfuse of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren, Reid and Pierce Cummons and a brother, Gregory Gray of Akron.
Clarence Kerr
SPRINGFIELD -- Clarence E. Kerr, 87, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at the Masonic Home in Springfield.
Kerr was the founder of Boys' Village Inc., Smithville, which opened in 1946. An ordained minister of the United Methodist Church, Kerr served congregations in western Pennsylvania and Ohio early in his life. His last pastoral charge included the churches in Smithville and Creston. During that time, he fulfilled a dream to begin a treatment facility for Ohio children similar to Boys' Town, Nebraska. Kerr was the first administrator at Boys' Village, serving until 1951. He built community involvement and attracted support for the construction of many needed facilities. Following his time at Boys' Village, Kerr worked for more than 20 years as guidance counselor and vice principal at Azusa High School in Azusa, Calif.
Kerr was born Sept. 11, 1916.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by two brothers, C. Russell Kerr and David T. Kerr, their wives, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for late spring at Boys' Village.

Amy Mast
MILLERSBURG -- Amy Ruth Mast, 93, of Millersburg, died Wednesday evening, March 19, 2003, at Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg, following a short illness.
Family services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg.
Memorial services will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Millersburg Mennonite Church with Pastor Tom Michaels conducting both services. Burial will be at Berlin Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 9, 1909, in Harper, Kan. to M.A. and Millie (Zimmerman) Troyer and married William A. "Willie" Mast on June 5, 1930. He died Sept. 19, 1991.
She was a member of the Millersburg Mennonite Church.
Surviving are two children and their spouses, Bill and JoAnn Mast of Harper, Kan. and Janice and Robert Miller of Millersburg; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and four sisters, Nettie Troyer and Gladys Baker, both of Harper, Kan., Irene Nichols of Newton, Kan. and Joe Marner of Phoenix, Ariz.
In addition to her husband, a daughter, a son-in-law, two brothers, a sister, a grandson and a granddaughter, died previously.
Stanislawa Mikos
MILLERSBURG -- Stanislawa "Stella" C. Mikos, 84, of Millersburg, and formerly of Cleveland, died Thursday morning, March 20, 2003, at Scenic View, Castle Nursing Home in Millersburg.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, 379 S. Crawford St., Millersburg, with the Rev. Ronald Aubry officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are being handled by Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg.
She was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Cleveland to Bronislaw and Rozalia (Niezgoda) Mikos.
She was a graduate of The Ohio State University.
Surviving are three nieces and two nephews.
A brother, John J. Mikos, died previously.
Rev. Paul Miller
WALNUT CREEK -- The Rev. Paul R. Miller, 96, of Walnut Creek, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg.
Memorial services will be Sunday, March 23, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Walnut Creek Mennonite Church with the Revs. Ross Miller and Matt Hamsher officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from 2-5 p.m. at Walnut Creek Mennonite Church.

He was born May 5, 1906, in Holmes County to Melva J. and Malinda (Mast) Miller. He married Katie M. Troyer on Oct. 10, 1923. She died Sept. 25, 1978.
He was ordained a minister on July 27, 1937, and ordained Bishop on July 27, 1941. He retired from Walnut Creek Mennonite Church on Aug. 15, 1971. Following his retirement he spent several years in Florida serving as nursing home chaplain and did guest preaching. Upon returning to Walnut Creek he was a volunteer chaplain at Walnut Hills Nursing Home and many other area nursing homes.
He was a lifelong member of Walnut Creek Mennonite Church.
Surviving are a son, H. Blaine (Sarah) Miller of Snellville, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Dottie Miller of Walnut Creek; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Roscoe (Mattie) Miller of Walnut Creek and Lester (Barbara) Miller of Fresno, Calif. and a sister, Esther Hershberger of Walnut Creek.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a son, Keith Miller, a granddaughter, a great-grandson, two brothers, John and Payson, and two sisters, Faye and Mary.
